History and Roots of OU

1724 Establishment of the Kaitokudo (懐徳堂), School of General Educationof General Education

1838 Establishment of the Tekijuku (適塾), School of Dutch Studies in the Edo PeriodDutch Studies in the Edo Period

1931 Establishment of the Osaka Imperial University1947 Change the name to Osaka University1947 Change the name to Osaka University2007 Merger with Osaka University of Foreign Studies

OU was established in 1931 as the 6th imperial university with two faculties: medicine and science. It i tifi t b t d b k t th i d d d iIts scientific roots can be traced back to the open-minded and progressive tradition of the Osaka merchant culture of the Edo period. Although it is a national university, OU was established in response to the requests of local industrial circles and citizens. The first president was Hantaro NAGAOKA, theoretical nuclear physicist.

Join the Osaka International High-Level Physics Program

Large-scale Laser (http://www.ile.osaka-u.ac.jp/) Large-scale Accelerator (http://www.rcnp.osaka-u.ac.jp/)

Course Concept We will establish an International Physics Course (IPC) in the Department of Physics, Graduate School of Science, of Osaka University. In this course, we provide graduate students with an education and research program conducted in English. The education is designed so that a student can work as an active member of international collaborations in theory or experiment, for example, with large scale facilities. Osaka University is unique in that we have our own facilities including the high-power laser and high-energy accelerator shown above. Students interested in condensed matter physics and other fields of physics are also encouraged to join the course. We welcome students from abroad to join us in Osaka University.

Quota and Schedule Both M.S. and Ph. D courses start from October 1st, 2010. Scholarships will be given to several students.

Research Groups and Faculties We have 34 groups led by full professors covering research in particle and nuclear physics, astrophysics, plasma physics, condensed matter, statistical, and inter-disciplinary physics. Details of the groups and faculties are shown at URL. Feel free to contact any faculties. The IPC is created as a part of the graduate program in Physics Department. Students will be physics students, and get Master of Science or Ph.D. degree from the Department of Physics, Graduate School of Science.

URL: http://www.phys.sci.osaka-u.ac.jp/member/staff-en.html

How to enter the International Physics Course 1. Master course: An entrance examination will be held in China, Korea, Taiwan, USA etc. in spring 2010. Application begins on the web-site from January, 2010. All information will be up-dated at the URL of ICP. 2. PhD course: Contact any research group leader you wish to study with by the end of April, 2010. The group leader will organize your entrance examination.

Action plansp

Core universities will take the following steps to create an attractive educational and research environment for i i l dinternational students:

1) Expansion of course programs by which degrees ) p p g y gcan be earned through English-only classes

2) Enhancement of systems for receiving/hosting2) Enhancement of systems for receiving/hosting international students

3) Provide international students with opportunities to learn about Japanese language and culture

4) Promotion of strategic international cooperation
