Advanced programming and design development of large-scale (not to exceed 15,000 square feet) residential and commercial project, focused on spatial and volumetric concepts. Emphasis is on expression of structure, way fi nding, interior elements, design, and accessibility standards. Global issues and concerns to be introduced and developed.

Students will work with large residential and commercial projects and develop the research and design skills and the body of knowledge necessary to adequately program and complete large scale projects.

Course Rartionale

Expand the student’s programming capabilities by developing client profi les, and program requirements.Understand building standard conditions, existing interior volume, interior volume, and material expression.Defi ne circulation and space.Plan and conceive strong visual relationships to given conditions.Identify and use sustainable products and methodology in the project.Incorporate building codes by performing a code analysis for the project as well as designing a space that is ADA accessible.Further refi ne presentation and verbal communication skills.

Ms. Elphaba Th ropp is a president of her own company (Th ropp Inc.) and is looking to build a hotel chain with a fi ve star restautent and bar. She want each space to be intimate and relaxed. she feels that each space should be intriging, warm and welcoming.

Th e Eirby hotel suites redesigned was inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s interior

layout of the Farnsworth House.

Th e goal was to create an universal space as defi ned by Mies.

Universal space is an open space that can house any function.
