    National Workshop on

    Innovations in Bridge Engineering

    October 15-16, 2011Jointly organized by

Alumni Association of College of Engineering Pune

    and

Structural Engineering Division of Civil Engineering Department

    College of Engineering Pune

    Preamble

Bridges are lifeline structures. These are the most expensive structures of railways and

highways. Bridge engineering is a fascinating subject for civil engineers. Bridge design and

construction technology has been growing continuously. Bridge building involves

considerable amount of forethought, planning conceptualization and in-depth study, as it calls

for utmost economy. No risk can be taken in design and construction of bridges. It is therefore

necessary that an engineer entrusted with a bridge work should have a good knowledge of

various aspects of bridge engineering. Economy in construction and its long life can beensured by the use of proper materials, effective supervision and use of an economic method

of construction. College of Engineering Pune, jointly with Alumni Association of COEP plansa national workshop to highlight the innovative developments and current trends in design and

construction of bridges. The focus is on the design of bridges including structural health

    monitoring.

    Course Objectives

Bridges and flyovers are now being provided across rivers, oceans, habitats etc for traffic. The

Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai has set an important landmark in India. In addition to theaesthetics, profile and advanced construction techniques, it is necessary to focus on the seismic

and wind vibration control of bridges. The primary objective of the workshop is to appraise the

innovative techniques, focusing on the future trends. It also aims at discussing the working and

    applications of vibration control techniques.

    Themes to be covered

Lectures on the following themes will be arranged in the workshop: Vibration control of

bridges, Cable stayed bridges, Bridge foundations, Segmental Bridges, Formwork design forbridges, Dynamic analysis of bridges, Structural heath monitoring, Case studies, Soil-pile

interaction / soil-abutment interaction, Flyovers and Skew bridges

    Participants

The course is designed for structural engineers engaged in the design of bridges. The coursewill be also useful to the faculty teaching Bridge Engineering, as well as to the students

working on projects of bridges. The registration will be on the basis of first come, first served.

Participants have to make their own arrangement for stay.

    Methodology

The workshop will be conducted at the Applied Mechanics seminar hall. Lectures in the form

of power-point slides or word documents will be presented. The participants will be given

some assignments that will encourage them to study the new developments in depth. A few

example problems will also be provided. After every lecture, the participants will be

encouraged to ask questions and discuss the issues amongst themselves and with the resource

faculty. All sessions will be of interactive nature.

Course FacultyThe course will be conducted by Dr. S. N. Madhekar with assistance from other resource

faculty. Faculty from IIT Bombay and leading bridge design and construction companies likeSTUP consultants, AFCONS, Gharpuray consultants, and other experts in the field will be the

speakers. It is planned to conduct four sessions every day. The faculty will be from academics

and industry. Some of them are Dr. V. K. Raina, Dr. S. N. Madhekar, Dr. A. G. Deshpande,

    Prof. V. A. Gore and Mr. Y. G. Patwardhan

    Registration

The course fee has been fixed at Rs. 500/- for students of COEP, Rs.750/-for students of othercolleges, Rs.1500/- for faculty of engineering colleges and Rs 2000/- for practicing engineers.

The registration fee includes workshop proceedings, working lunch and tea /coffee on the

three days. The fee is payable in advance by a crossed draft in favour ofAlumni Association ofCOEP. Interested persons should send the enclosed Registration Form (on or before 1
