PTO NEWS Winter updateThe 2014-2015 school year is moving full steam ahead!

Both Special Friends Days were a huge success. Kindergarten, Second and FourthGraders invited their special friends on November 24 and enjoyed showing off theirclassrooms and having a snack. The second Special Friends Day was held on December19 for First, Third and Fifth Graders. Though it had been rescheduled, it was also hugelysuccessful as special friends flocked to check out our school.

On December 5, 2014, we had a hugely successful pancake dinner with Chris’ Pancakes.Santa and Mrs. Claus had a great time! Thanks to all who were able to join us!

Winter class parties, took place on December 19 before we enjoyed Winter Break. Asalways, the room parents, teachers and students are very grateful for your contributions tothese parties.

Valentine class parties are coming up on Thursday February 12. Please keep an eye onyour child’s folder for a flyer from the class parent asking for help. These will be the last“formal” parties of the year.

Our second annual Trivia Night is coming up on February 28. Supporting our backpackprogram this is a great way to enjoy a nice evening with your friends and make new onestoo.

Dining Out at local restaurants on fundraiser nights are a simple way to support our school and PTO. When flyers come home, please mark your calendars and enjoy dinner out. Upcoming dates include McDonald’s on March 10, Lonestar on April 9 andChipotle on May 21. Talk about easy dinner clean up!

As always, we would LOVE to see you at the Bridgeway PTO meetings on the first Wednesday of the month! We value your input as we work together to support the teachers, students and families of Bridgeway!!

COUNSELOR’S NEWS

EARLY CHILDHOOD NEWS

Our students have been busy serving and being kind to others the past few months. For our November counseling lesson, students learned about Service and all students made cards for kids who are in the hospital. We sent our cards to

Cards for Hospitalized Kids, who distributes them to kids in hospitals across the country. In December, we discussed Kindness and leaving heartprints on people.

A heartprint is the impression left behind by a deliberate act of kindness. Students made a goal to leave at least one heartprint on someone by doing something kind for

them, but we know our students leave many heartprints on people every day.

In January, we discussed peace and how each and every one of us is an important “peace” of the puzzle in this world. We all have unique and special gifts to offer those around us. One way we celebrated peace in January is by participating in national No Name-Calling Week. Students enjoyed the special dress themes and the activities in their classrooms that focused on standing up to people who bully as well as reaching out in friendship to those who are bullied. Our students have been doing a great job of helping others and spreading kindness and peace around Bridgeway, and we hope they are doing the same at home!

After our long holiday break, we are getting back into our usual routine. Our units during January centered around “winter”. We began with a fun story, The Mitten, where we recreated the story by making our own mitten and animals. We also learned about animals that hibernate. The month ended with a unit on Fairy Tales. February brings units on dinosaurs, Valentine’s Day, dental health and healthy foods. Our Valentine party will be on Thursday, February 12th at 10:45am. Everyone is invited to attend! Thank you to everyone for all the donations you have given to help make our parties so much fun! We appreciate your support!

ELL DEPARTMENT NEWSWe hope all of our families enjoyed a restful winter vacation!

Your students are working hard to prepare for the ACCESS for ELLs test which is coming up in the next few weeks! The ACCESS test will test your student’s English Proficiency Level which will decide the level of service your student will receive from the ELL teachers at Bridgeway. We will not receive the test results until late in May.

KINDERGARTEN NEWS

FIRST GRADE NEWS

It is hard to believe that Kindergarten has already celebrated the 100th Day of School. Students made special snacks, wrote about what it would be like to be 100 years old, have $100, and have 100 favorite things. All of the activities were such fun!

April brings the Kindergarten field trip to the Magic House. We will visit the Children’s Village for a “Community Workers” Program. Students will shop, hold jobs in the community, and work with currency and then play games with money and coin identification. This trip matches our math and social studies curriculum nicely.

We hope to look forward to an early spring (please, Groundhog!) and to third trimester in Kindergarten. We must work hard for First grade.

First grade has had a busy winter! We celebrated the 100th day of school on the 23rd of January. All of our activities were centered around the number 100.

In writing we just completed our unit focused on instructing others how to do something. Examples were How to Build a Snowman, How to Blow a Bubble, and How to make a Peanut Butter Sandwich.

In reading we are focusing on asking “I wonder” questions while reading. The students have become experts in visualizing (creating pictures in their mind) to help them understand the text.

In math we are beginning a unit focused on addition and subtraction facts. Practicing these facts at home will benefit the students. A suggestion would

be having your child make their own flashcards on index cards. Have them start with the one’s facts (1+1=2,

1+2=3….). Every couple of nights have them make another ten flashcards to practice.

February is going to be exciting as we celebrate Groundhog’s Day, President’s Day, and Valentine’s Day.

SECOND GRADE NEWS

THIRD GRADE NEWS

Happy New Year! Second graders are busy at work. We are currently working on measurement using the metric system. It’s always helpful to review basic facts, telling time to the 5 min., and counting money. In reading, we continue to focus on learning new vocabulary and increasing our reading stamina.

Students are quickly progressing through the cursive letters! In Science, we are studying plants and practicing our observation and data collection skills.Students are always excited to visit the Science Lab.

Do you have Internet access at home? If so, visit Bridgeway’s website to find links to Dreambox, Spelling City, and many other great websites.

We look forward to meeting with you for 2nd trimester conferences during the last week of February!

2015 has already been busy for 3rd grade! We have started working on reading nonfiction biographies and identifying what we learn in them. We are using our comprehension strategies of wondering/questioning and thinking about what we are learning to help us understand. Try to read some nonfiction with your child at home. Newspapers, magazines, informational books, etc. are all great choices to help them expand their “reading diet”!

Third graders have also been using nonfiction in our writing- we just completed a description of a planet that we researched and are now working on an informational narrative (biography) of a famous African American in honor of Black History Month.

In Science, students have been learning about the scientific method and will soon start using our knowledge to work on our class science experiments for the Science Fair.

In Social Studies, students are completing a unit on famous African-Americans such as Martin Luther King, Jr. that coordinates with our writing piece.

Third graders should be practicing their multiplication facts daily-they are expected to know the facts of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 from MEMORY by the end of this trimester. By the end of the year, all third graders should have all their facts to 10 memorized. As always, please let us know if you have any questions. FOURTH GRADE NEWSThe fourth grade team would like to thank all the room parents who volunteered to organize and run the wonderful parties our classrooms experienced before the holiday break. Fun times were had by all as we enjoyed making cute crafts and consuming those delicious treats!

Our math classes have been busy learning all about how to interpret and make a variety of tables and graphs. We have now moved onto fractions. Please support your child at home by helping them find examples of fractions in everyday life. One terrific hands-on way for your children to experience using fractions is for them to help with baking in the kitchen. Getting the opportunity to double a recipe or cut one in half makes fractions seem real and useful as well as easier to understand.

In reading, we have been emphasizing using inferencing skills to help us with comprehending text. In addition to our Making Meaning reading units, our classes have been utilizing leveled literature sets. These sets give us the opportunity to read, write, and discuss about common literature as we practice appropriate ways to interact with our peers when sharing our writing/reactions to the daily reading.

Science has certainly become very hands-on in all of Bridgeway! We now have a science lab and a great new science teacher, Mr. Matthew Parker. Mr. Parker does an outstanding job of leading our 4th grade classes in hands-on science projects twice a week in the lab. Classes have been doing water units or Project Lead the Way experiments. We certainly appreciate having the chance to understand science principles in such an interactive way, and we’re looking forward to many more exciting experiments!

The entire 4th grade took a field trip to Chesterfield to attend the Super Mario Brothers Ballet! Students thoroughly appreciated seeing this video game come to life in the form of a ballet!! We were certainly impressed with the variety of boys and girls dancing their way through each level of this game so many of our students love playing at home! The school year is really flying by and soon we will be contacting you for your February parent teacher conferences. Please be looking for sign-up opportunities on the BW website in the weeks to come. As always, we appreciate your support from home. Regular communication with your child’s teacher helps ensure that every child’s educational needs are sure to be met, so we hope you’ll make every effort to attend your conferences. We are eager to share your child’s progress with you!

FIFTH GRADE NEWSIt is hard to believe that we are more than halfway through explorations in all subject areas of this 2014-2015 school year!

Fifth grade learners have completed their most recent Math in Focus chapter on Algebra where they recognized, wrote, and evaluated simple algebraic expressions with one variable. Next, students will explore the place value of decimals. In the process they will learn how to read and write decimals through thousandths, identify the relationship between fractions and decimals, compare and order decimals, and round decimals to the nearest hundredth.

Making Meaning Workshop in Reading has been a wonderful success! Students are working hard with their thinking partners during read aloud and are applying higher level thinking skills during small group work. We are amazed at the depth of knowledge they are developing through their independent reading and notebooks. Most recently, your learner explored articles that offered pros and cons for various topics including banning junk food ads and the point of view of all boy and all girl schools. Students utilized highlighting to identify reasons for and against topics, and then used information to debate their opinion.

Your young authors wrapped up their Explanation report on an animal of choice and will now begin working with Keynote in the computer lab. This will allow learners

to learn a program that they will utilize frequently in middle school. We look forward to seeing them use these tools to transform their written report into a powerful presentation.

In Science, we are in our second rotation. Students are learning all about the Universe, Robotics and Matter as they rotate to each fifth grade teacher. The teachers are enjoying getting to know all the students in fifth grade as a whole.

The end of second trimester is just around the corner and fifth grade will be preparing for student led conferences. We look forward to meeting with each of you in February!

ART NEWSWelcome to 2015! We have had a very busy start to the New Year. The students at Bridgeway are continuing to develop their artistic style and creativity with each new project we make. There are two exciting developments coming from the art room within the next few months. Bridgeway has now officially joined Artsonia and the Bridgeway Art Show will be here starting in February.

Artsonia is a digital art museum where student art can be viewed and shared with friends and family. You can view and access student art by going to www.artsonia.com and searching for Bridgeway School. This is a wonderful tool to celebrate student art and preserve their creations for years to come. This is also an opportunity for parents to purchase items with student created designs. I am currently in the process of uploading student art to the site and soon you will have access to purchase student art. Please look for a flyer coming home soon, or email me directly with any questions you may have. In the meantime please check out the site and enjoy art created by our Bridgeway Bulldogs.

You can also enjoy student art during the annual Bridgeway Art Show. The art show will begin on February 25th (which is also the first night of Parent-Teacher Conferences) and conclude at the end of March (which happens to be Youth Art Month in our schools). Yo u can participate in the art show by viewing the art show before or after your conferences and completing an art activity that will be available in a flyer coming home in February. As the art show draws near I will also send home reminder notes. All of the students have worked really hard this year and I am so excited to share their creativity and art accomplishments. In the meantime, please feel free to admire the rotating art that is always hanging in the halls at Bridgeway.

Kindergarten through fifth grade has been continuing to learn new skills, study new artists, and creating with new art processes. The Kindergarten students learned how to use Hot Wheel cars to add texture to a painting and they loved seeing how the cars left marks on the paper. First grade students just finished making a variety of winter projects. Some classes made patterned mittens with falling snow and other classes made penguins using shapes. Abstract art is the new word the second graders have been using. They learned what abstract art is and painted in a warm and cool color scheme. The paintings are quite beautiful. The third grade students are wrapping up a weaving project that they have been working on from December. The students are using raffia, which is a straw-like material, and weaving the raffia on a cardboard loom. The textures and patterns that are being achieved are amazing. Fourth grade students are busy learning about paper Mache to make an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus. The detail and designs that are being used are very imaginative and unique. In fifth grade we have been using the self-portrait as our subject matter, but instead of drawing the portraits, the students are adding layers of cardboard to add facial features or using a reverse painting technique and the results are superb. There will be more art to explore as we continue through the year.

As always, I look forward to working with your children and I am always impressed and amazed to see how they grow, change and create over the course of the school year. Please continue to enjoy all of the student creations and for supporting art.

MATH NEWSThe great part about learning math is that it is all around us! Here are some ways to work mathematics into your daily routines and help your students make the connection that math is everywhere and takes many forms:

For younger students (K-2):• Have students count objects around the house. (“How many plates are on the table?” or “How many toys can you pick up in one minute?”)• Have students write their numbers with chalk when the weather gets nicer.• Ask students to look for numbers on signs in the car and read the numbers. (Second graders can read numbers up to 1,000!)

For older students (3-5):• Point out geometric solids in the environment. (Basketballs are spheres, tissue boxes are rectangular prisms, soup cans are cylinders, etc.)• On pizza nights make connections with fractions. (“How much of the pizza will be left if I eat 2 of these 8 slices?”)• Continue to work on multiplication and division facts on a trip to the grocery store. (“If I buy this bag of cookies with 45 cookies in it, how many cookies would each person in our family get?”)

It's the last Box Tops submission of the school year! Our school will be sending in the Box Tops we've collected by February10, 2015. Our goal this school year is to earn $1600. We earned $702.20 in December. You can help us reach our yearly goal and make our April earnings check big by sending in your Box Tops this month. This is the last chance for you to help our school earn cash this school year through Box Tops.

•Send in Box Tops in a sealable bag or envelope, write the class/teacher on the bag/envelope so that the class gets credit for the submission.

READING NEWSReading each night is an important part of your child’s learning and development. Try to include reading as part of your nightly routine. The chart below describes the positive effects reading each night for 20 minutes can have on your child.Here are some ideas how to incorporate reading each night:• Have family night reading• Reading before video games because “B” for books comes before “V” for video in the alphabet• Have your child read to you while you are cooking, doing dishes, folding laundry…• Read the same book as your child and discuss what happened and how you were feeling as you experienced the story• Have a big brother/sister read to a little brother/sister or to the dog, cat, hamster… even a favorite stuffed animal.

There are many ways to squeeze 20 minutes into a busy schedule. Whatever you do, squeeze them in – it is vital for your child’s success!

A cold vegetable and fruit bar is available daily on which we feature a variety of vegetables and fruits including locally grown when seasonally available. Each week we feature deeply colored, nutrient-rich vegetables including red/orange and dark green varieties, as well as beans and other additional choices. See back of menu for this month's featured selections. We also offer at least one hot vegetable daily on our serving line.

Tofu comes in a variety of textures. Extra-firm is good for stir-frying, firm is good for baking. Use soft for a creamy dip or soup, and silken for making a smoothie. Legumes and tofu are a great vegetarian protein source. They also contain fiber and iron, and are low in fat. Eating a few meals each week that include vegetarian protein, instead of meat, is good for you and the environment! Legumes include a variety of beans, peas, and lentils, and are rich in high-quality protein compared to other plant foods. Tofu is made from the soybean, a legume, and is a high protein food that can be eaten as a meat substitute in meals and recipes.
