The Coaching Staff

Curt Kendall, Head CoachCurt Kendall, the

winningest coach inBridgewater baseballhistory, is starting his 25thseason as the Eagles’skipper. Since taking overthe program in 1986,Kendall has led BC to 11Old Dominion AthleticConference tournamentchampionships and 12ODAC regular seasontitles. In addition, Kendallhas been honored as theleague’s Coach-of-the-Yearfour times. He has a careerrecord of 569-366-8.

A 1981 graduate ofBridgewater, Kendall took over as head coach in 1986 andguided BC to a then-school record 23 victories and the ODACregular season and tournament titles.

During the1988 season, the Bridgewater program reachedeven greater heights. The Eagles again broke the school recordfor victories in a season, going 25-8, and again capturing theODAC regular season and championship titles. Bridgewater wasranked as high as 16th in the country and Kendall was namedthe College Division Coach-of-the-Year in Virginia. Thefollowing season, the Eagles compiled a 21-9 mark and addedyet another ODAC regular season crown and finished the seasonranked 18th in the country.

Kendall’s career took another step forward in 1994 whenthe Eagles tied a school record for victories with a 25-11 record.The Eagles earned their sixth ODAC championship and the

fourth during Kendall’s tenure. The Eagles were rewarded withan invitation to the NCAA Division III South RegionalTournament, the first in the school’s impressive baseball history.

Kendall’s team continued the success story in 1995, as theEagles finished with a 25-10 record and the ODAC regularseason title and tournament championship. The Eagles madetheir second consecutive trip to the South Regional.

Kendall directed the 1996 team to a school-record 27 winsand a 16-0 ODAC mark. The team set a league record forconference wins and became only the second team in schoolhistory to go through conference play with a perfect record.Bridgewater proceeded to win all three of its ODAC tournamentgames to earn Kendall an unprecedented sixth tournament title.

The Eagles made their third trip to the NCAAs underKendall during the 1999 season, finishing with a 26-19 overallmark and an 11-5 ODAC record. BC defeated W&L to win theconference tournament and they won the program’s first-everNCAA regional game, defeating Methodist, 16-6.

Bridgewater finished the 2001 season with a 26-16 recordand tied for first in the regular season standings with a 13-3mark, earning Kendall ODAC Coach of the Year honors. TheEagles won the ODAC tourney to earn a trip to the NCAASouth Regional.

In 2002, the Eagles claimed the ODAC regular seasoncrown with a 13-2-1 record and then won the tournament title toearn another trip to the NCAA tournament. Kendall was onceagain named ODAC Coach of the Year.

In 2006, the Eagles reached the 30-win plateau for the firsttime in BC history, finishing with a 32-14-1 record. The Eaglesfinished first in the ODAC regular season race and received anat-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.

In 2007, the Eagles won the ODAC tournament to earnanother trip to NCAA regional play and last year, the teamfinished with a 24-17-1 record.

Ben Spotts, Assistant CoachFormer Bridgewater baseball

standout Ben Spotts is beginning his13th year as an assistant coach andrecruiting coordinator at his almamater.

A three-year starter at first base,Spotts was an integral part of BC’sNCAA tournament teams in 1995and ’96 and earned second-team All-ODAC honors in 1997 after hitting.344 his senior season. He was alsochosen to the 1995 All-ODACtournament team after collecting

seven hits in 14 at-bats during the Eagles’ championship run,and finished his playing career with 111 hits and a .323 lifetimeaverage.

In addition to his recruiting duties, Spotts is heavilyinvolved with the team’s hitters and infielders. He also works inthe college’s athletic department as the compliance officer.

During the summers of 2003 and 2004, Spotts served as anassistant coach for the Waynesboro Generals in the ValleyBaseball League.

Former Bridgewater baseballstandout Scott Hearn is beginning histhird year as an assistant coach withthe Bridgewater baseball program

Hearn (’03) played four seasonswith the Eagles and was an All-ODAC first-team selection threetimes and an All-ODAC second-teamselection as a senior.

He finished his playing career asthe College’s all-time leader in hits(235), runs batted in (165), doubles(54), extra base hits (87), and total

bases (376).Following his playing career, Hearn coached one year at

Old Dominion University.Hearn will work with the hitters and outfielders this

season.
