world? It was lovely to sit in the church, which looked beautiful, and be a part ofour community remembering a long toldstory and hearing the children sing withsuch passion.
The creativeness of our children (andperhaps some of their parents) was at thecentre of the Easter Bonnet madness. What a range of creations there were, with a five-storey egg bonnet which I’msure gave Yves a cricked neck as shewalked and balanced without the sky-scraper of a bonnet teetering over. Neo’swillow crown looked as though the elveshad a hand in its crafting. There wasevery shape and colour and size of bon-net; it was a delight.
For our Year 6 children, this term is thetime they sit the standardised tests. Whata challenge they have this year! A newseries of tests has been introduced whichlinks to the new curriculum introduced

September 2014. You may notice that thecurriculum was introduced quite recentlyand therefore our wonderful, bright, thoughtful, interested year 6 children arebeing tested against something they haveonly been taught for a year and a half! TheEducation profession is in uproar withevery head teacher and year 6 teacher be-moaning the ridiculousness of this. Wewant our children to leave primary schoolready for the challenge of the secondaryphase, not anxious and worried aboutwhether they are ‘any good’. Our Year 6have risen to the challenge and haveworked extremely hard, under the guid-ance of Mrs. White and Mrs. Corlett, andtherefore deserve to do well. In the weekof 9th May please give a thought to ouryoungsters as they take a breath and openthose papers and start to answer the ques-tions. The Year 6 have constructed a letterto send to Mr. Read, the Director of Edu-cation for DEMAT, asking him to raise
Here we are at the start of our SummerTerm when in fact everyone is just begin-ning to enjoy the onset of spring! It islovely to look out and to see incrediblegrowth in the garden and I expect we willbe hearing the ‘put putting’ of lawn mow-ers soon as we will be unable to ignore thegrass growing at a flamboyant rate.
Our last term ended with the usual EasterService and Easter Bonnet Extravaganza.St. Andrew’s Church and Rev. Horan wel-comed the school to the church, and asever we processed behind our school ban-ner and were greeted by a wonderful con-gregation of parents, grandparents andfriends. The story of Easter was toldthrough series of readings. What a power-ful message the Easter story gives: a mes-sage of profound cruelty, rejection andpowerful love and forgiveness. Our worldneeds more of the latter; I wonder whatimpact an outpouring of love, kindnessand care would bring to our dislocated

their concerns when he meets with MPs,DfE representatives and the RegionalSchools Commissioner, Mr. Coulson. Itmakes me proud that the children, despitethe pressure, care enough about the situa-tion to want to try to make it better forothers.
I know that once SATs are over the chil-dren will be able to relax and regain thejoy they have for learning, which is cur-rently sorely stretched, as they focus onother aspects of the curriculum. They willbe creating our floats for the Carnival, going on a residential to Hilltop, preparingfor Sports Day, creating artwork for anexhibition and rehearsing for their lastprimary production.
Lastly, May Day is coming up and theschool is awash with the sounds of dancemusic from various cultures! I watchedDavid George go through the annualstruggle to find the hole for the maypole. Iam pleased to say it was a successfulsearch and he has ensured we will find itin each lesson by mowing around the areaand sticking a post into it. A simple butexcellent solution which we are gettingused to with David’s influence around theschool. The year 6 are starting to get togrips with the weaving and synchronisingthat the maypole dances require and welook forward to seeing the usual deftnessof implementation and lightness of foot.

Free home assessments on offer
Older, disabled or vulnerable residents of West Norfolk are being encouraged to book an appointment for a free home assessment fromCareline Community Services.
The assessments, which are carried out by a team of qualified staff, will help residents, who may be living with a disability or dementia,or who are simply older and less mobile, to identify concerns in their property which may be affecting their day-to-day life.
The assessor, trained by the Disabled Living Foundation, will inspect the home to see whether measures could be introduced that wouldreduce the possibility of slips, trips and falls and generally make it easier for people to live safely and independently in their ownhomes.
Measures that could be considered include installation of a Careline personal alarm, improved lighting arrangements, heating checks, draught proofing, smoke detectors and easy-to-use taps along with recommendations for other adaptations that may reduce any poten-tial risk to the resident. Practical solutions for those living with dementia are also available, this includes signage or colour differentia-tion for those who suffer with memory loss and are visually impaired.
The assessors will also be able to advise whether any grant funding is available for any works required.
To book an appointment call the Careline Community Team on01553 760671

On Monday, 11th April, we all enjoyed ameal of roast chicken, gravy, roast pota-toes, carrots and peas followed by hotcross bun bread and butter pudding andcream prepared, as usual by our team ofwonderful ladies. This was a much qui-eter occasion than usual as there were afew empty chairs: Sadly our Emily haspassed away and our thoughts and prayersgo to her friends and family. We shallmiss her at our monthly lunch. Anotherlady missing was our Robbie who has hadto spend some time in hospital and we areall praying for a speedy recovery for ourfriend. Lastly, but not least, ourJoyce. Although we all tried hard Joycethe raffle was not quite the same! Wehoping to see you in your usual place atthe next lunch.
Now for something else that's sad in adifferent way. The Carer's Club keep theirplastic table cloths all clean and rolled upneatly and tidily for use next time in theVillage Hall and someone during the lastmonth thought it necessary to unroll themand throw them on the floor plus break thecardboard tube that they are wrappedaround for storage. Obviously we don'tknow who did this or their reasons forneeding to do it but for future referenceplease could whoever it was refrain fromdoing so again. The Carer's Club have topurchase these items and its sad that thishas happened.
The Car Scheme is still very busy andproviding a much needed service for manyin the Village. I would like to thank alldrivers for being so willing to help when Iask them to do a drive.
Next month on Monday, 9th May, theladies are preparing and serving a meal ofgala pie, potatoes, baked tomatoes andpeas followed by lemon cheesecake and

Golden Wedding
On 26th March this year Michael and Pam Parfitt celebrated 50 years ofmarried life and also 50 years of living in Northwold.
We were treated to a surprise party in The Crown to celebrate this event, which was meticulously planned by a number of friends of long standing. The party only happened due to the great generosity of those involved, and was greatly appreciated. It is not necessary to mention names as youall know who you are.The selection of The Crown for the event could not have been bettered.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks for what was done for us,and also for the many cards and gifts which we received from a greatmany people, some whom had come from as far away as London to bewith us,
Once again THANK YOU
Michael and Pam.

you later” she purrs gratefully. By thistime, all the men in the room are aghast, mouths hanging open, when the manwho answered the phone asks them“Does anyone know whose phone thatis?”
This reminds me of the chap talkingloudly to his wife on his mobile 'phonein the railway carriage. “Hello, darling, this is your John, just dying to get backhome to you. I can't wait to see you. You're the only one for me etc etc etc”This went on for 20 minutes and every-one else in the carriage was really fedup. In the end, a young lady sitting op-posite snatched the 'phone and said “ForGoodness' sake, John, put that 'phonedown and come back to bed!”
Do you remember the days of the tightleather mini skirts? Two jokes spring tomind.
The husband always became really ex-cited when his wife wore her newleather mini skirt, She thought his ex-citement to be well out of proportion tohis normal reactions and she quizzedhim. “Well” he said “you smell just likea new car”. The next day, and the nextjoke, she was trying to climb up into a'bus but the skirt was too tight. Shereached behind and pulled her zip down– no benefit. She pulled it further down– no benefit. One more try made no dif-ference. Suddenly, she was picked up bya big strong man behind her and depos-ited on the platform of the 'bus. She wasfurious and berated him for interferingwith her person, and so on. The tiradeinvolved human rights and all sorts. Theman looked sheepish and apologised“As you had pulled my trouser zip downon three occasions, I thought we hadsome sort of relationship beginning”
Six men were on a golfing holiday, sleeping two to a room. After the firstnight, the one who had spent the night inthe same room as George demanded achange because George snored soloudly. One of the others volunteered tojoin George but, by the next morning, hehad suffered enough. Another of themen offered to join George and, the nextmorning, he told the others that he had
Management and I have been travellingquite a lot recently and I need to let offsome steam.
The standard of driving has deterioratedenormously recently. Having been an as-sessor for the Institute of Advanced Mo-torists, I hold conservative views aboutdriving, mostly involving anticipation, progressive driving, defensive drivingand, above all safe driving. The currenthabits of undertaking, tailgating, changinglane erratically without any signalling andpulling out in front of an oncoming vehi-cle all display ignorance of the basic ten-ets of safe driving and irritate me a greatdeal. I do wonder where these peoplelearn to drive and to develop such a greatlack of consideration for other road users.Don't start me on zip-merging, the safeand fair way to deal with an obstruction inthe road. There, that feels better!
Have any of you noticed the recuperativepower of wheelchairs at airports. Mostwheelchair users are genuine but some ofthose using “assistance”, which greatlyspeeds up the process of going throughcheck-in and security, appear to arrive atthe destination airport and, having beendealt with speedily by immigration, for-sake the wheelchair and step rapidly awayfrom the airport to start their holiday –truly a miracle cure of whatever had beenailing them. There, that feels even betterand it must be time for some jokes:
Several men are in a golf club changingroom when a mobile phone rings. One ofthe men answers it and turns it to loud-speaker mode. “Hello Darling, I'm in Har-rods and they have this gorgeous leathercoat for only £2,000” “You buy it, dar-ling” he said. She carried on “Also, I'vejust seen the new top of the range Mer-cedes convertible at £120,000” “You buyit” he said, “but make sure it has all theextras for that price”. She carries on “Youremember that house we looked at – wellthe price has reduced from £2 million to£1.4 million – it has to be a bargain” “Goahead and buy it” says the man.
“You're so good to me, darling, I'll see
slept really well. When asked about it, hesaid “Well, as we got ready for bed, Itucked George into bed, patted his bottomand kissed him Goodnight! After this, hesat up and watched me all night – he didnot sleep a wink but I had a great night'ssleep!”
Best wishes to you allIan Nisbet

Swaffham Museum reopened in Feb-ruary for the 2016 season. If youhaven’t visited recently – or indeedperhaps you have never visited - thereare now two very good reasons tomake the trip.
The first reason is that as part of the800 Market Celebrations we had theoldest known painting of SwaffhamMarket conserved. It is a water colourpainted on paper and took a long timeto clean and mend as it was very frag-ile. The artist is unknown.
Our volunteer photographers then en-hanced it and it was put into a lightbox. We now have a fascinating viewof Swaffham somewhere around, webelieve, 1803.
There are nine enlarged sections of thepainting, one of which shows theFakenham to Brandon coach, and an-other shows the Town Pit and theWell … or maybe it is not a well but aweighing machine?
And secondly, over the winter the mu-seum has been able to re-organisesome of its rooms to create a fifth ex-hibition room. This will house a largedisplay to celebrate the CentenaryYear of RAF Marham and will beopening on March 19 for the summerseason.
It will include a timeline of the work

MESSAGE FROM PAM EYLES
Have come across a piece of paper with names that I believe apply to one of the photosfrom David Bloomfield - I believe these must have been given to me from a village per-son as they were not on computer. Perhaps Mrs. Dodd teacher may help to identify
Unsure if this might be the photo being referred to:
Back: Miriam Sutter by: Maurice Jay: Ian McDowell: Brian Stone: David Cooper: Nor-man Hardy: David Bray; Rosemary Hopkin.
Middle: Pat Askew: ?: ?: Jill Musgrove: Muriel Boughen: Sylvia Blott: Judy Tate:Joan Giles: ?; ?:Mrs Dodd.
Sitting: Neil Peacock: George Askew: David Bloomfield: Ralph Hardy: Eric Wil-son: ?: ?: Brian Howlett:David Sellwood.
Then names Doris Haylock and Colin Askew -- so they may be two unknowns.
at RAF Marham since 1916, and alsoa focus on Operation Corporate - theBritish military operation to retake theFalkland Islands in 1982. RAF Mar-ham played an essential role in theFalklands War when Victors flewfrom there to refuel the Vulcan bomb-ers in mid-air in order that the Vulcanscould reach their target site in theSouth Atlantic.
A £3.99 pocket calculator also playeda very significant part in the FalklandWar but you will need to visit the ex-hibition to find out why, and the con-nection it has with Swaffham.
Photographs and Logbooks will bedisplayed in the exhibition which willbe open over the summer season (Mon– Fri 10am until 4pm and Sat 10amuntil 1pm). Normal museum entrycharges apply.
