President’s Report B y N i g e l D u t t o n

Congratulations to Allison Stralow and her team for a very successful Golden West Congress held in Mandurah

last weekend. It was a great event; the venue was again excellent; the weather perfect and 51 tables ensured a successful financial outcome. The only slight hiccup was a pair that failed to turn up causing problems for the directors. Naturally, BAWA will be seeking the entry fee from the players concerned. I have noted a number of clubs have been seeking entry fees from players who enter and fail to show at congresses – it seems to be working as the number of non attendees has certainly declined. All clubs need to do is contact the players concerned and request the entry fee. BAWA does not need to be involved unless there is a problem.

Speaking of financial outcomes, like everybody else BAWA is suffering from rising cost pressures and consequently will be increasing competition fees next year by, a very modest, $5 per player per event. Note: per event NOT per night. We are also conscious of costs and have begun a close examination of all of our financial affairs. It was noted at the recent management committee meeting that the PQP Selection events, now renamed the Spring Championship Pairs, were very expensive. If we included the PQP prize for the Western Seniors these 3 events were costing around $6000 in prize monies. It was also noted that, due to a historical reason, that first and

second prizes were the same value. It was decided to keep the first prize at a $1000 per pair travel subsidy but reduce second prize to $500. This will improve the combined events bottom line by $1500.

As you are no doubt aware John Beddow has recently retired after nearly 10 years as the BAWA Executive Officer. John has been an exemplary XO and has left big shoes to fill. I would like to publicly acknowledge John’s contribution to BAWA and also wish his successor, John Aquino, all the best. John A’s contact details can be obtained from our web site. Fortunately, we are not losing John B completely; he will remain on the management committee and continue to convene the Interclub Teams of 4 competitions. I am also pleased to announce that John B has been appointed as a BAWA recorder; joining Gerry Daly and Allison Stralow.

Recently BAWA received the excellent news that the WABC has agreed to host the ABF/BAWA Western Seniors Pairs event. This is in addition to the Swan River Swiss and the Hans Rosendorff Memorial Congress. I wish to personally and on behalf of the Association thank WABC for their continued support of State and National level bridge.

Please allow me to take the opportunity to wish ALL WA bridge players and their families a Merry Xmas and prosperous New Year.

It's now ten weeks since we moved into our new home. So far, most things have flowed nicely...... excepting..... the bureaucrats that are in charge. I've contacted organisations and companies to notify of the new address, have updated our details and upgraded policies as and where needed. Now you would think that was the easy bit.... I can assure you, IT’S NOT.

Despite; ‘phone calls, emails and letters, the incoming correspondence leaves me absolutely gob smacked!!!! Yesterday's mail brought in three letters from two insurance companies and Synergy. Each was sent to our rental address. The Colonial Insurance draft was hilarious. It read "We have noted your new address and any further correspondence will be sent to that new address", so they then posted it to our old address. Makes the mind boggle. No wonder the World is going to pot. (Synergy and Alinta are the worst offenders.)

I keep smiling. My happy tablets still work.

Happy Bridging,

Congress Prize Money Congress Prize Money: BAWA recommends a percentage of the profit goes back to the players in prize money.

Some congresses offer lunch in the entry fee. As long as the lunch is of good quality, no-one complains. The cost of entry can be quite expensive. In one congress, the prize money for coming in first in the final was $50 per person. Wine also accompanied the prize money.

Country congresses are known for their hospitality. Earlier this year, the Country GNOT was held in Kojonup. Convenors Robina and Eugene organised delicious trays of food, all inclusive of the entry fees.

The Golden West, an ABF/ BAWA major gold point event, also gives very generous prize

money. The Mandurah Bridge Club members do the catering and the standard is always very high.

I personally feel that in this day and age of high cost living, clubs running congresses would do well to keep faith with their supporters. Words such as Generous Prizes should clarify whether this is moneyed prizes or bottles of wine.

See you in the Golden West.

Christmas Wish List If you are looking to expand your knowledge on Declarer or Defence play, you might like to check out the Master Bridge Series, by Roger Trezel and Terence Reese. Titles in the set are: Blocking and Unblocking, Snares and Swindles, Safety Plays, Elimination Play, When to Duck and When to Win, Those Extra Chances in Bridge, The Art of Defence and Master the Odds in Bridge.

The reason I particularly like these books is the actual page layout. The problem is set out quite clearly on one page, with the answer following on the next. Bridge books are never made to be read like a novel. If you can't 'see' the method, I advise students to get a pack of cards and set out the hands and play it themselves.

The Master Bridge Series was printed in the mid 1970's. They are not reprinted, so have a look in your second hand book shops, or contact bridge suppliers and 'book' a copy or two. You won't regret it!

"Blocking and Unblocking" gives examples of how hasty plays by Defence can block the run of a suit, the result of which, allows Declarer, at worst, to make his contract, or minimises the tricks taken to defeat the contract... So before playing a card randomly to partner's suit, it's worth giving it some thought to unblocking your 10s and 9s.

I wish you all a Joyous and Safe Christmas with Happy Bridge in the New Year.

One of the best, and most readable, bridge books is

that written by Pietro Forquet. It is called “Bridge with the Blue Team” and is an encapsulated history of the most successful bridge team that ever existed – the legendary Blue Team of Italy. They won ten Bermuda Bowl championships in a row, as well as two Olympiad titles, a feat that is likely to stand for all time in the bridge record books.

Over the years that one learns to play the game, many books are recommended by teachers as excellent support material to sharpen your abilities. That is true, and no doubt bridge players have their own favourites. I am inspired by this book. The first edition (in English) of the Blue Team was published in 1987, long after the original Italian version appeared in 1971. There is a current edition, published this year, that has an additional 50 hands, and many of these are as inspirational as those that appeared in the first edition.

This book is my favourite for many reasons: the hands are beautiful and exciting, the writing lucid and instructional, and, most of all, the book shows the wizardry of the players, where it seems they have an uncanny ability to smell out the true position of the enemy cards. One is continually left breathless at the mastery of their technical skills, as well as their ability to psychologically excel against all opponents.

Who were they? The team comprised Eugenio Chiaradia, Guglielmo Siniscalco, Mimmo D’Alelio, Walter Avarelli, Georgio Belladonna, Pietro Forquet, Benito Garozzo, Camillo Pabis-Ticci and their peerless captain Carlo Alberto Perroux. Most bridge players have heard of the Belladonna-Garozzo combination (perhaps the most famous partnership in bridge history) but all the team members excelled at one time or another.

Their winning run in the Bermuda Bowl started in 1957 and they were undefeated for 10 successive Bowls. No other Country has achieved this since.

Probably it is best to give an example from the very first Bowl in 1957. Italy was playing the USA in a very tight final in New York. Italy had reached this spade slam on minimum values:

Both sides were vulnerable, and the bidding was:

WEST NORTH EAST SOUTH

D’Alelio Chiaradia

2C

2H 2S

3S 4D 4S 5C

6S 6S

Pass

The 2C was a conventional forcing bid. 2H showed the Ace of hearts. 2S was natural, and 3S showed support, at least three to a top honour.4D and 5C were cue bids, suggesting a slam, but D’Alelio, with nothing to spare refused partner’s invitation twice.

In that light, Chiaradia’s final decision appears reckless. To be fair, D’Alelio did hold the absolute minimum possible for his bidding and could have made exactly the same bid with, say, four trumps to the Queen or a five card heart suit or even just the Jack of clubs extra.

When Chiaradia bid six spades, the Viewgraph commentator pointed out that the slam was absolutely unmakeable and that even if Chiaradia had passed five spades, that contract would have presented problems!

The Blue Team

“Fostering Bridge in WA” 7

The Captain of the Italian Team, Carlo Alberto Perroux, was in the audience with Pietro Forquet, and asked him if the slam could be made. After hearing from Forquet that the slam could not be made, even if Chiaradia could have seen all four hands, Perroux left the room to seek solace in a long walk.

The Queen of hearts was led.

How was declarer to make the hand?

This was the layout:

21 ♣ KQ102

Chiaradia won the lead with the King and continued by playing the nine of spades to the Queen and a club to the King. He followed this with the eight of spades to the Jack. This farsighted unblocking play received its just reward when the ten of spades dropped doubleton, giving declarer an additional entry to dummy via the seven of spades.

When Chiaradia led a second club from dummy, East rose with the Ace. A club return would have allowed West to ruff, defeating the slam, but as West had followed to the club lead first with the three and then the four, East assumed his partner had three clubs, not two.

East returned a diamond and Chiaradia played as though he could see through the cards: Ace of diamonds: five of spades to dummy’s seven, a club to the ten: Ace of spades and Queen of clubs. This was the ending:

On the King of spades, West was inexorably squeezed in hearts and diamonds and thus Chiaradia had brilliantly made his slam (and won the Bermuda Bowl).

“Bridge with the Blue Team” is filled with gems like this, and will keep you awake into the night reading of their brilliancies.

(My thanks to the publishers of “Bridge with the Blue Team”)

Systems .... conventions ...all rather wearisome. May be mind bending, opportunist, fresh....and replete with danger, time consuming, wasteful and error producing.

I love conventions but they have to have a reasonable occurrence rate and be not too difficult to remember or to remember that partner remembers.

I never thought I would be brave or foolish enough to write an article on a convention, but I have been spurred by a rash of comments on the merits of Michaels. But there is a serious never mentioned gap or flaw.

Michael Michaels came from Florida and his name is immortalised. Combined with the Unusual No Trump it seems the answer to a maiden’s prayer. No hands but delightfully simple.

1 C...overcalled by 2C shows both majors; same with 1D.

1 H …overcalled by 2H shows spades and either minor; same with 1S.

This can be allied to the unusual no trump showing both minors.

And that is it. Many players play that or one of the ceaseless variations. Is an unspecified minor not a problem? Not at all argue the advocates the responder to the over caller merely bids not trump to ask the over caller to bid his or her minor.

End of story..? Well not quite. Over their 1S your partner overcalls 2S.

You have a good minor and a fit in his major and aim to bid no trump to find out if by some good fortune your partner’s minor is the same as yours you see a game if not a slam. If it does not coincide then a part score will suffice. Well that’s ok then let’s play Michaels.

Not so fast. The opponents are not instructed to be silent throughout. They jump to the three level

in their opening suit...or four level ... and you are up the creek without the proverbial paddle. The chances of having the minor suit fit are not high enough for you to risk high level competition. If you do not have that fit your hand may be worthless.

Good bye Michael....you have failed us I fear.

Hello Pierre Ghestem French player of renown who introduced the Ghestem convention. Needless to say there are reams and reams of additional and mind boggling variations all of which I abhor and would forget. Kiss principle...as I would say “keep it simple sweetheart” or as my wife would say...”keep it simple stupid.”

The only thing I would mention is the modified Ghestem which overcomes the tiresome ambiguity of Michael

To recap: Over a one bid opening from the opposition -

1. Overcall of two no trump....shows the lower two suits.

2. Overcall of opener’s bid with the same suit shows the two higher suits.

You have spotted there is no bid in the above two for two suits which are neither both higher or both lower.

1. Opponents open 1C.... you cannot show D and S neither the two lower nor the two higher

2. Opponents open 1H how do you show C and S? Neither the lower nor higher?

3. Opponents open 1S how do you show C and H? Neither lower nor higher?

4. Opponents open 1D how do you show C and S? Neither the lower nor higher?

You cannot unless you use modified Ghestem and the answer is simple .....bid 3 clubs ...this shows the extremes ...that is neither the top two suits nor the bottom two suits.

Bye Michael Michaels – Hel lo Ghestem

10 “Fostering Bridge in WA”

The disadvantage is that you lose 3C as a natural bid or a no trump probe if they open 1C but you have now been able to show a precise two out of three missing suits. Wunderbar

I promise you this is not difficult to learn and is a very clear and simplified version .... dynamite. Whether you do it weak or strong or both (mini/ maxi) is entirely up to you and your partnership.

But not goodbye entirely Michael Michaels.....I still love leaping Michaels which can be quite common. In a sentence.....Your opponents open a weak two of a major ‘you can bid four of a minor to show the other major and that minor.

Lovely Jubbly.

My New Year Resolution

"With acknowledgement to Dorothy Parker and homage to to Oscar Wilde. And in the interests of a resolution to be literate next year. No more really bad jokes but "If, with the literate I

am, Impelled to try an epigram

I never seek to take the credit, We all assume that Oscar said it.!"

But the one I really like that is attributed to Dorothy as well. And you may well all know it. At a Hollywood

party young starlet Jane Harlow approached Dorothy and asked surreptiously. "Isn't that Bridget

Bardot?" crudely pronouncing the 'T' at the end. "Yes Sweetheart", "

Dorothy replied "But I think you'll find that last' t' is silent, as in Harlow."

So my New Year's resolution - as I said no more really bad literary jokes.

Oh and for Linda and Beata - deadline, deadline, deadline!. Hmmm.

Lying already. Happy New Year all. :-)

After West opened one diamond and North doubled, South had a tough problem. With no 4-card suit other than the enemy suit, recommended strategy is to reply with your cheapest 3-card suit. Hence, South bid 1H. The South hand is known as a ‘Yarborough’, a hand with no card higher than a nine. The term Yarborough is named after an English lord who would wager 1,000 pounds to one against the chance of such a hand being dealt to a player. As the correct odds are 1,827 to one, Lord Yarborough had a significant edge.

When North bid two diamonds, a forcing bid, what was South to do?

The usual standby in these circumstances when you hold a worthless hand is to repeat your first suit. Any other action suggests some useful values. Therefore South rebid 2H. That is hardly an attractive move, since partner is likely to take the rebid as a genuine suit, but what else would you suggest? Passing is out of the question and to bid no-trumps promises a stopper in their suit.

With eight top tricks, North bid 3D, asking for a potential diamond stopper and South bid hearts a third time. (“I had three hearts, so I bid three hearts.”)

North wisely raised to 4H. One more diamond bid would have seen North as declarer in that suit.

West led the king of diamonds and now South had to try to find ten tricks. The opening lead was ruffed in dummy, followed by two top trumps. Next came the three top spades. South was lucky that the hand with two spades had only two trumps. He could now play dummy’s fourth spade and ruff it in hand. Two club tricks and the high trump brought declarer’s tally to ten.

“I knew your hand had to be worth at least one trick,” said North, “especially when you bid the hearts three times.”

Kalgoorlie Bridge Congress took place during the CHOGM weekend in its super new venue, the Kalgoorlie Golf Club. I was worried that the Congress wouldn’t be well attended because of CHOGM, but my fears were unfounded. 16 Teams took part and about 40 Pairs played on the Saturday. The event was well organised with buses arranged to pick people up from their accommodation. The bus also took people to the Super Pit and to show newcomers to Kalgoorlie the sights, if they wished to go in their lunch breaks.

We teamed with Chris Ross and Gail Fogelman and were a bit disappointed to be just out of the money, coming 4th. I could tell you about some of our disasters, but I have decided to adopt an upbeat tone for this last report of the year and show off some of our nice slams.

Round Two, Board 13 was a triumph for our team-mates.

Rick opened an off-beat 1NT. We play Two Over One, so 1NT shows 15-17 HCP, balanced. Although Rick did have two Honour doubletons, he decided that 1NT best described his hand. I don’t know what experts would think of his bid, but I liked it.

Now, I am looking at 14 HCP, but a nice long Heart suit. I thought if Rick is a flat minimum hand, then we don’t want to go any higher than game. We always open 1NT with a 5 card Major, so I decided I would use Lavings 2C ask to find

out his range and whether he has 5 of a Major. If he had 5 Spades, then we had a fit. His 2NT reply showed a maximum hand with no 5 card Major. Now I know that he has 17 HCP, not 15, I know that slam is on the cards! So I bid 6NT praying that we weren’t missing the Ace and King of Clubs! God was listening; a Spade was led. Rick won the Ace, played the 6H to find the Singleton King fly up, so 13 tricks came home. One lady asked me, “How did you bid the slam? You didn’t have enough points for 6NT”. I told her that I count tricks, not points.

Congratulations to the Kalgoorlie Bridge Club for organising such a well-run, enjoyable Congress. The local people make the visitors very welcome and look after us well. Congratulations to the

Munro Team, comprising Dave Munro, Liz McNeil, Doreen Jones and David Schokman who beat Chris Mulley, Jonathan Pynt, Simon Brayshaw and Matthew Raisin by 1VP- the closest result I have seen for a while.

Merry Christmas to all.

Kingdom of Bahrain There are not too many places to play bridge in Bahrain. Currently I play once a week on a Monday night at the British Club which normally has 4-6 tables. The session is run by a lovely English lady named Sarah. The standard at the British Club is lower than a Club session in Perth with a number of intermediate and novice players. There are one or two reasonable players but they are extremely undisciplined – naturally, when you can intimidate most of the field with aggressive bidding. You are unlikely to be punished by accurate defence. One of my good friends at the Club is known as “Aziz 3NT”. Similar to the Hideous Hog, the bidding with Aziz usually goes 1X – 1Y – 3NT leaving you to find a lead. He is an extremely good card player so you are often booked for a bad score if he is declarer. Up until recently you were not allowed to open on the first round without a solid opener i.e. Weak twos were not allowed until Round 2. This was to protect the weaker players but the rule has now been overturned. I don’t play Multi Twos because it is unfair on people who never come up against these methods. Twice a week there are daytime sessions at the British Club for beginners and intermediate players. After the end of play the boards are reshuffled for the next session. Some of these people think it’s hilarious to goulash the odd hand, so when I am dealt an 8-5-0-0, I am rather circumspect with my bidding.

Other places in Bahrain where bridge is played in the evening include The Bahrain Bridge Club on a Wednesday evening but it is struggling to attract 3 tables, so the session is often cancelled. During the daytime, there are 4 to 5 table sessions at Bodyline, Saar on a Sunday morning and at The Verandah Café on a Tuesday morning. That’s not too many duplicate bridge sessions in a country with 1.2 million people.

Two interesting hands came up recently at the British Club.

You are South in fourth position.

West, on your left opens 2S (weak two in a major) and it is passed round to you. Being green, I decided to venture a balancing 3H. West passes and now partner (who is a normally a good player) surprised me with 4H. Not unexpectedly, East comes to life with a Double. West leads JD and partner puts down his unattractive dummy! Goodness, what in heavens name is he playing at? 3H is difficult enough, never mind 4H doubled.

I play low and East wins with AD and returns a low Diamond that West ruffs with the 6H! I thank my lucky stars that at least East did not return a Spade through my King. West pauses and eventually plays AS followed by QS which I win in hand. I now play a low Heart and sure enough West discards a Spade. I put up the QH taken by the Ace. A diamond is returned which I win in hand with the KD.

Cover the rest of this page (below the line) with your hand and decide how you would continue before reading on?

It looks like West is a 6 1 1 5 shape. Would he have opened 2S with the KC as well? I decide no, so I play a low Club and put up the Ace. East, looking miffed, drops the KC. I now play a Heart from dummy but East inserts the 9H and I win in hand. Unfortunately I cannot reach dummy without East ruffing so I just play off the Hearts,

Bridge in the Middle East

East wins the fourth round and returns a Diamond which I ruff. My 6S is now a menace and I make the rest of the tricks on a squeeze. Two down for minus 300. Not bad, considering I would probably go 4 off on best defence. Imagine if West leads a low Club. Would you go up with the Ace? Unlikely.

At the end of the session, I am regaling all and sundry with the story that I had brilliantly dropped the KC offside and then executed a Spade Club squeeze against West to go only two off. 70% of the room give me a blank look. What’s a squeeze? Meanwhile my partner was moaning that we had scored a cold bottom. To be fair he was blaming himself for raising to 4H. Probably caused by too many glasses of red wine which is a favourite tipple as the sessions are held in one of the British Club’s bars.

You are South in third position. North and East pass and you open 1S. West overcalls 2C and North’s 2S closes the auction. JH is led. This looked suspiciously like a singleton so I go up with AH and play a Spade to the King. I cashed QS and crossed to dummy with AS, happy that trumps were breaking. I now play a low Heart from dummy. East goes up with KH and returns a Heart to my queen. Now I’m stuck so I decided to exit with JD. West wins this with QD and cashes AD but does not play a third one. Why not? I suddenly realise that West has nothing left except Clubs so I play 10 Clubs on West’s low Club exit and win KC with my Ace. Now when I exit with my low Club West is forced to give me the 9th trick with JC on which I throw my losing Diamond. East goes to bed with KD. We are the last table to play the hand and discover that we have scored a top.

The teaching of the game of bridge requires particular skills. In order to assist the standard of bridge teaching throughout the country, the Australian Bridge Federation (ABF) sponsors a Bridge Teachers Training Program — for both aspiring and established bridge teachers.

In 2011 the ABF collaborated with State bridge associations to present a series of seminars in Brisbane, Melbourne, Hobart and, recently, in Perth. The presenter, Joan Butts, is the ABF’s National Teacher Training Coordinator. Joan is one of Australia’s elite bridge teachers who run courses both in Australia and overseas. In her own right she is also a top ranking bridge player who has represented Australia in international competition.

The aim of these workshop/seminars is to introduce ideas, materials, teaching tools and a structure to bridge teachers to enable them to be more effective in their craft. Much of Joan Butt’s methodology is based on the approach developed by Audrey Grant, the eminent North American bridge educator. Joan brings to this approach her considerable experience as an educator with the Queensland Department of Education. Teaching

any subject draws from common principles which educators use to ensure students have the most productive learning experience. Joan Butts brings this approach to the teaching of bridge.

The first day of the seminar spelt out a proposed methodology of good practice in bridge teaching. On the second day the attendees were taken through a 'mock' course where the teaching methodologies were applied in practice. This particular session was focused on “Competitive Bidding - Without a Fit" where attendees played the dual role of both student and observer.

As with any good seminar the time passed very quickly and we were left at the end of the session wanting to learn more. Twenty people attended the Perth seminar. Some had travelled to Perth from as far afield as Kalgoorlie, Bridgetown, Busselton and Geraldton. The following is a list of people from the WA bridge community who attended the Teacher Training Seminar in Perth.

The ABF should be commended for its initiative - the Teacher Training Program.

Dr Chris Bagley was elected President of WABC at our October AGM. Chris has served as Chairman of the Tournament Committee, Treasurer and Secretary during his time on the Management

Committee so is well qualified to take over the reins/gavel from Alison Rigg. We all wish him well.

The winner of the Mabs McCulloch Trophy for the most green points accumulated during the year was announced at the AGM. It was again won by (R) Bobbie Mitchell – not a new experience for this very consistent player. She very graciously attributed her success to her three long standing partners (L) Joan Carter, Claudine Charters and June Simpson.

The Club Evening Pairs Championship was also held in October over two Wednesday evenings. The keenly contested event was won by

Sheenagh Young (WABC Executive Officer) and Peter Holloway.

Congratulations are due to John Ashworth and Toby Manford who won the State Mixed Pairs

Championship. Toby and John have won this event three times over a period of 30 years – a truly remarkable record.

November saw us all donning our finery for a wonderful Melbourne Cup luncheon organized by our Secretary and Vice President Gwen Wiles. Beautiful hats abounded and even the gentlemen present

wore an amazing assortment of top hats and trilbeys. The bridge that followed was played with great hilarity.

We look forward to seeing many of you at our Christmas Congress and may I wish you all a very happy and safe Festive Season and Happy Bridging in 2012.

Bridgetown is a thriving club - small, only 26 members - but with a very good standard of bridge and an enthusiastic membership. We meet every Tuesday evening in St Paul's Church Hall, Phillip Street, with play commencing at 7 pm. We pride ourselves on being a friendly club and are always pleased to welcome visitors. Bridgetown being a good central point for other clubs in the South West and Great Southern, the Country

Championships are held here in early April. This year, I think we had 19 tables, so a great turnout.

Bridgetown is a vibrant community with a variety of festivals and events being held throughout the year. At Easter, there's a popular tennis country championship; in May and November the Festivals of Country Gardens; October brings the Blackwood Marathon and November sees the "Blues" and also the Agricultural Show - to name just a few events. Plenty of excuses there, should you need any, to come to our lovely town! Bridgetown also promotes itself as the "Winter Capital of W.A." and stages a myriad of themed attractions during June. However, if you plan to come then - don't forget to bring plenty of woollies! Not for nothing are we known as "Fridgetown" then.

Bunbury Bridge Club Inc received a grant of $5,000 from the Lotteries Commission, for which, we are all very grateful as this money was well

spent on the purchase of 20 BridgeMates Mark 2. As a Director, I appreciate the ease in getting the scoring completed. As a player, I like to see the early results, as do most players. The bonus of having access to the Internet allows members to see their results as well as a board by board result of the field on the computer in their own home, or through the library as I did until recently.

Players can also ask the Director for a personal printout, which will give percentages of each board. This is ideal for an up and coming partnership. They can target their poor scores and discuss the glitches, ensuring fewer errors occur in the future.

Bridge proves that people are never too old to learn. The same applies to new technology. We tend to be a little fearful of the unknown, but with patience and perseverance, everyone adapts very quickly.

Grateful thanks to Neville Walker of Mandurah Bridge Club and Brian Wade of Bunbury, who installed the program, set up the BridgeMates and ensured the members of an easy transition into Space Age Technology.

Well done, everybody.

South Perth Bridge Club f r o m C a s s i e M o r i n

The Club has celebrated three 90th birthdays

within 3 months. The latest celebration was Mavis Williams 90th on the 21st October. Mavis was presented with a card signed by members and flowers.

Our second tenderfoot day for the year was held on the Sunday 30th October and well attended with 14 tables. Winners were Christa Nimmo and Jan Taylor (tenderfoot).

Melbourne Cup Day held the John Coleman Trophy Event.

Winners were :

Frances Dunborough

(and Beryl Farrell.)

The day was celebrated with lots of sweeps run by life member Pat Boys and a delicious catered lunch.

Undercroft Bridge Club f r o m A n n H o p f m u e l l e r

The Spring Pairs was held over 3 Monday evenings in October, with 29 pairs participating.

Congratulations to the winners, (R) Tom Januszewski and Zbigniew Balicki. (Club President Ann Hopfmueller)

In second place were (L) Graeme Esson and Russell McCann.

Moira Pirrit and Sheila Parker came third.

Following this event we had the GWEN JOHNSON SWISS TEAMS. Sixteen teams took part and the competition was fierce and close.

Tad Bieganski, Beata Bieganski, Zbigniew Balicki and Tom Januszewski were the successful team. Well done!

My New Year Resolution

To try really hard to concentrate and NOT make silly mistakes.

Tony Martin

Two teams drew in second place. They were Jim Pinnington, Allan Doig, David Cowell and Ann Hopfmueller and Ann Ohlson, Diane Tilvern, Satish Bedekar and Anthony Eardley.

The MELBOURNE CUP day was most successful.

Ladies adorned in gorgeous hats and fascinators, delicious food, fine champagne, sweeps and of course BRIDGE – well sort of!!

A great time was had by all.

Fiske Warren will commence lessons again in February 2012.

Wishing all of the WA bridging community a wonderful festive season!

Geraldton Bridge Club f r o m J e a n C u l l o t o n

This photo was recently during afternoon tea and

features the over 85's who were in attendance.

All play an excellent game and are often featured in the winner's circle.

From the left: Val Pepper (85) Trix Askew (92) Mairea Stuart (89) Dick Bailey (85) Lorna Willock (92) and Ella Murphy (93).

The club will be holding its Christmas Dinner and prize giving on 19th December at The Geraldton Golf Club.

Plans are currently afoot to hold our first Congress for many years in June 2012. We all look forward to hosting visitors from all the WA clubs.

Since moving into our new club rooms our membership continues to grow.

I take this opportunity to send all clubs season's greetings, and hope that you all enjoy a happy and successful 2012.

My New Year Resolution

Follow this advice – Things work out best for the people who make the best of the way things work out.

West Coast Bridge Club f r o m H i l a r y H e p t i n s t a l l

Congratulations to Elizabeth Bennett and Maureen Phillips, the winners of our Swiss Pairs Competition and to Marleen Medhat and Don Whooley, the winners of our Saturday Pairs Competition.

Marleen Medhat and Don Whooley

This week is our annual ‘Charity Week’ when members pay extra table money to contribute to a worthwhile cause. This year we have chosen to support the Activ Foundation and we hope to exceed our last year’s total of $1000.

Our Christmas Party will be held at 1.00pm on Saturday December 10. The afternoon bridge session will be followed at 4.00 pm by sumptuous refreshments and trophy presentations.

Rudy Woss

We wonder whether we have WA’s oldest bridge

player at WCBC? Rudy Woss is 101 and drives himself to bridge several times a week in the

Jaguar to which he treated himself on his 90th birthday.

He still plays a very good game of bridge and has won the Club’s annual award for gaining the most Green Points for the last few years.

Rudy’s other claim to fame is that his grandson, Nelson Woss, is the producer of the acclaimed Australian film ‘Red Dog’.

Rudy’s initial reaction to his grandson’s choice of career was that ‘He should get himself a proper job!’ However, we know that he is very proud of his grandson’s achievements and he has been to see the film three times!

My New Year Resolution

This is one I hope all players would adopt!

'I resolve to always make my opening lead before filling in details of the

contract on my personal score record.'

Neville Walker

We humans spend a lot of time worrying - We worry about Health - about money -

about relationships and horrors of horrors about playing bad bridge. My

resolution is stop worrying!

Nils Andersson

"To make every effort to be less judgmental, by understanding that most people are doing the best they can, with

what they've got!"

Michael Stewart

A WINNER LISTENS TO HIS partner’s POINT OF VIEW;

A LOSER JUST WAITS UNTIL IT’S TIME TO EXPRESS HIS OWN.

The real test of a bridge player isn’t in keeping out of trouble, but in escaping once he’s in.....

Alfred Sheinwold

When I take a 50-50 chance I expect it to come off 8 or 9 times out of 10....

Hideous Hog

Bridge is essentially a social game, but unfortunately it attracts a substantial number of antisocial people.....

Alan Truscott

Where’s the hand you held in the auction??..... (A comment made when dummy hit the table).....

Jan Janitschke

It is not the handling of difficult hands that makes the winning player. There aren’t enough of them. It is the ability to avoid messing up the easy ones.....

Alan Sontag

Most bridge players prefer consistency in their partners rather than brilliance.....

Matthew Granovetter

Since the average person’s small supply of politeness must last him all his life, he can’t afford to waste it on bridge partners.....Alfred Sheinwold

If 3NT is a viable option - then bid it.....

Paul Soloway

It’s not enough to win the tricks that belong to you. Try also for some that belong to the opponents.....

Alfred Sheinwold

The real secret of the expert is to make logic seem like flair.....

Hugh Kelsey

Regardless of what sadistic impulses we may harbour, winning bridge means helping partner avoid mistakes.....

Frank Stewart

EDGAR KAPLIN...from...The Rama Room

The difference between a brave bid and a foolhardy bid is largely a matter of result.

Some people bid 3NT over their partner’s 3 - level suit bids on the theory that it’s more dignified to go down in game.

To teach the opponents not to pre-empt against you, you must not only double them, you must also beat them.

That’s unfair. North-South were just having a good time and suddenly East-West turned nasty and doubled.

Four hearts is a very good bid – but on some other hand.

When in doubt, put the opponents on lead. Why should you make the mistake??

The first duty of a contract is to make. If it doesn’t make, that’s a major flaw.

Bad enough when the trumps are 4-1, but when the singleton gets a ruff, that’s an affront.
