British bricks traditionally varied in colour thanks to regional differences in clay. Across East Anglia, a warm buff was commonplace, compared to the rich reds of the South or the cool blues of the North.
Today colour choice is a matter of personal taste. The following pages are designed to inspire and inform you showcasing why Vandersanden Group is the ultimate specialist in facing bricks.

As the trend for reclaimed bricks continues, good quality products become harder to find and ever more expensive to buy. Levels of wastage experienced with even the highest quality reclaims can be in the region of 20%. Therefore, Vandersanden’s patented aging process offers a genuine alternative: A new facing brick with an aged appearance, offering a reclaimed look that comes with our quality guarantee and impressive 0.2% wastage statistic.
The way in which we make our Nostalgia reclaimed-style bricks is unique. We tumble our bricks before they are fired in the kiln to produce a distressed look. The advantage of tumbling unfired is the corners and edges of the bricks are not chipped or damaged, just bruised and rounded. Also, the colour pigmentations is fired onto the brick surface, including the rounded edges, during the subsequent firing process. The result is an aged brick that looks more natural and has a much greater resemblance to a reclaimed brick.

TIP The ‘50mm’ makes buildings appear wider. The individual brick length emphasises the horizontal aspect of the building. This is a particularly useful characteristic for smaller developments or where a sense of extra width is required.
TIP Every brick is also available as a slip, which is a ±2 cm slice taken from the front face of a brick. The height and the width of a brick slip is therefore the same as those of an entire facing brick. Brick slips are not laid with mortar but glued against an existing surface. Once they are finished with joint mortar they are indistinguishable from classic ma-sonry. Slips are a popular choice for interior brick features, due to the significant space saving derived from the thinner brick format.

ENGOBED WATERSTRUCKBy applying an innovative technique devel-oped in-house, Vandersanden Group has the ability to create a special range of en-gobed waterstruck facing bricks. Engobes are liquid pigment dyes that mostly consist of clay minerals and oxides. They exist in all the colours of the rainbow offering unlimited design possibilities. A façade con-structed with engobed Waterstruck bricks alternates matt facing bricks with bricks that reflect the sunlight.
EffectDepending on the light, the engobed wa-terstruck bricks possess a subtle sheen.
We use our very own patented shaping method where bricks are tumbled before they are kiln-fired. This ensures Vandersanden bricks have a solid structure coupled with the popular distressed appearance of reclaimed bricks.
EffectBecause the plasticity of an unbaked product is higher than that of a baked version, the brick acquires a very natural looking ‘aged’ patina, making the brick appear reclaimed in texture.
waterstruck
Choosing your preferred texture of facing bricks comes down to personal taste. That’s why we offer four different options, each with its own appearance and character. The variations are achieved by using different manufacturing processes. We classify our textures as handmade, stock, water-struck and aged.
The name refers to the very special shaping technique which uses water pressure to produce relatively smooth bricks.
EffectSmall pockets of air between the batch of clay and the wall of the mould provides some texture to the surface. The brick is relatively smooth with fewer veins.
understanding bricks
The most well-known and com-monly used brick type. Today, a mechanical process is used to emulate the time-honoured, hand-moulded brick shapes.
EffectThis texture adds more depth and distinction to the colour of the facing bricks. Tiny shadow lines, formed by the veins in the brick, are caused where light falls on its surface.

joint colours
understanding bricks
Chosen your favourite colour? The overall look of your exterior walls is strongly influenced by the way the selected bricks are pointed. Furthermore, depending on brick size, between 10 and 20% of the façade may consist of joint material, so the joint colour itself has a significant impact on the overall aesthetic of your project. Choosing the right joint colour is a decision that should not be rushed. After all, the joint makes or breaks the façade.
the effect of the joints
Grey is the most common choice for joint colour because of its neutral tone. When close up there is sufficient contrast with the colour of the brick. However, from a distance the brick and mortar give the appearance of being one entity.
A white joint emphasises the lines of the joint and simultaneously refreshes and intensifies the colour of the brick.
Black mortar is being used more frequently. It can give a warm effect with certain brick colours.
Coloured mortar with coloured bricks creates even surfaces. The contrast between the brick and the joint is reduced to a minimum.
An overview of the most commonly used joint colours and their effect on the façade.
Our innovative jointless effect Zero brick offers the option of construction with-out showing mortar.
The result. Pure, flawless brick façade with character, in which the colour of the bricks is not affected by the colour of the joints.
Choice of 14 colours. Unique and only available at Vandersanden.

Our facing bricks have a lifespan of well over one hundred years, after which they can be given a new lease of life through recycling and reclamation.
how’s that for a sustainability!
4 Furthermore, our manufacturing process does not generate any waste.
5 Thanks to careful use of rain and ground-water which remains in a closed system, there is no waste water discharge.
6 Naturally, we keep our CO2 emissions as low as possible. Thanks to more efficient kilns, improved drying rooms, solar panels and heat recovery, we use 50% less energy today than we did in 1983.
1 Durability starts with the basics, such as the raw material for our facing bricks. We extract 50% of our clay from ground works at construction and infrastructure projects, meaning fewer extractions are required.
2 Did you know that bricks are made from 100% natural raw materials? We only add sand and natural colour pigments to the clay.
3 During production, every kilogram of raw material becomes a kilogram of brick.
Bricks are durable and become even stronger when manufactured, packed and distributed by a sustainable and robust company like Vandersanden Group.Since 1924 Vandersanden has manufactured facing bricks
whilst also respecting environmental sustainability as well as the people in and around our company.
This respect remains at the heart of what we say and do every day. Through our long-term investment programme, Vandersanden minimises material and energy consumption. In fact, our wastage levels are down to 0%! We constantly strive to decrease our impact on the natural environment wherever possible.
