Homecoming: Take Three...Tornados finally host Homecoming celebrationThe Tornados welcome the North Greenville Crusaders to Brevard Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon for Brevard’s 2011 Homecoming celebration, as Brevard and North Greenville begin the scheduling alliance set by the South Atlantic Conference and NGU.

The last time the two teams met was in the 2006 season, the year when Brevard issued in the modern era of the Tornados football program. The game, also held at Brevard Memorial Stadium, ended with a North Greenville victory as the Crusaders defeated the Tornados 55-0 behind 150 rushing yards and three touchdowns by Rashad Cummings as Brevard was held to 108 yards of total offense.

Five years later, the Tornados and Crusaders will again share the field, this time also in Brevard Memorial Stadium, as Brevard puts its 3-4 record up against North Greenville’s 5-2 overall record. The Tornados are 1-2 against common opponents, defeating Tusculum, while falling to Lenoir-Rhyne and Mars Hill. North Greenville, meanwhile, has defeated Tusculum and Lenoir-Rhyne, while falling to Mars HIll.

North Greenville leads the all-time series between the two schools, with a 2-0 record against Brevard.

The Tornados will be recognizing the 2011 Brevard College Athletic Hall of Fame inductees during the pregame festivities at Brevard Memorial Stadium, and the 2011 Homecoming Court and Homecoming Week winners will be recognized during the halftime ceremonies.

Kickoff for the 2011 Brevard College Homecoming game between the Tornados and the Crusaders is set for 2 p.m. at Brevard Memorial Stadium in Brevard, N.C.

Fans who are unable to attend the game, can listen live through the broadcast brought to you by the “Voice of the Tornados” Dwayne Summers over the radio at WSQL Radio 1240 AM, or over the internet at www.wsqlradio.com.

Head Coach Paul Hamilton is in his fifth year at the helm of the Tornados, bringing with him 28 years of coaching experience at both the Division I and Division II levels, with eleven of those years as head coach.

Brevard rode victories in their first five games last season, finishing 7-4, while recording wins against SAC opponents Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum and Catawba. The team completed one of the greatest turnarounds in the nation, recognized as the 11th best turnaround by Somis Sports in Division II in 2009.

The Tornados made the full transition into the SAC in the 2008 season, finishing with a 1-9 record, which did not reflect the heart and determination the team showed as they made strides to competing in one of the toughest conferences in all Division II.

In his first year at Brevard, Coach Hamilton made huge strides in constructing the Brevard College Football program from the ground up. In only their second year of existence, the Tornados finished 2-9 on the year, playing a full South Atlantic Conference slate along the way. The Tornados improved on a regular basis throughout the season, as BC scored in every contest, a

huge upgrade from the 2006 season in which the Tornados were shut out four times.

Coach Hamilton’s squad, which only had a month of preparation under the head coach prior to the start of the season, scored wins over both Chowan University and LaGrange College both of which were home contests. In 2007, the Tornados improved in every statistical category as they competed as provisional members of both the NCAA Division II level and of the very strong South Atlantic Conference which had four different teams ranked throughout the season.

Hamilton began his collegiate football coaching career at the Citadel in 1981 where he coached the receivers. He then moved on to East Tennessee State University where he coached the receivers in 1983 before coaching the quarterbacks in 1984-1985 and 1986-1987. Hamilton coached the quarterbacks and served as the offensive coordinator at Wofford College in 1988-1989. Coach Hamilton served his first coaching stint with the U.S. Air Force Academy from 1990-1996. During his last three seasons, he called the offensive plays for the Falcons in addition to serving as the quarterbacks coach. Air Force competed in four bowl games during Hamilton’s time there and ranked second nationally in rushing and in the top-25 total offense four times. While at Air Force, Hamilton coached quarterback Beau Morgan, who finished in the top-10 in the Heisman Trophy voting and was named a third-team Associated Press All-American in 1996. Under Hamilton’s guidance, Morgan became the first player in NCAA history to rush and pass for over 1,000 yards in a season two times. He also broke the NCAA single season rushing record for a quarterback, along with being only the second player in NCAA history to run and pass for 3,000 yards in a career.

Hamilton’s first break as a head coach came at East Tennessee State, where he coached from 1997-2003 and where he amassed a record of 38-41.

During his first season at ETSU, Hamilton’s team led the Southern Conference in total offense, total defense and boasted the league’s Male Athlete of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. The team’s 7-4 record in 1997 tied as the second highest win total ever by a Buccaneer squad and gave Hamilton the best record ever by a first-year head coach at ETSU. The Buccaneers set three single-season team records in 1997, including the marks for points per game and total offense per game. ETSU was ranked in the top-25 throughout much of the season, as two of Hamilton’s players were named first-team All-Americans by the Associated Press and the Sports Network.

Hamilton then moved on to be the head coach at Elon in 2004 and 2005. In his first season as head coach he guided the Phoenix to two Southern Conference victories, a first in the school’s young history as a conference member. He posted a 6-16 record at Elon over the two year span where he coached seven All-Southern Conference players, five Southern Conference Athletes of the Month, two Academic All-Conference players and one Academic All-American.

In 2006, Hamilton returned to the Air Force Academy to coach the fullbacks for his former college coach, Fisher DeBerry.

Hamilton graduated in 1981 from Appalachian State University where he lettered for three years as quarterback under DeBerry and was a team captain as a junior. Hamilton earned his master’s degree in secondary education from The Citadel in 1986.

Hamilton and his wife, Jane, a native of Spruce Pine, NC, have three children – a son, Kye and two daughters, Jenna and Alanna.

Tornados ranked 8th in preseason Conference poll Brevard College opens ranked eighth last season by the South Atlantic Conference head coaches. The Tornados received eight total votes in the preseason poll. Carson-Newman leads the preseason poll, having clinched a share of the SAC Title in 2008. The Eagles received 62 votes and six first place votes. Catawba and Mars Hill were the other teams in the conference to receive first place votes, with one apiece.

FCS opponent Brevard’s game on the road against Gardner-Webb is the Tornados second game against an FCS opponent since the program was reinstated in 2006. Brevard took on the Runnin’ Bulldogs last season at Spangler Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C., falling 28-14. The Tornados faced the Runnin’ Bulldogs four times from 1934-1950, splitting the series with GWU, 2-2.

What’s New For bC in 2011? Brevard College has moved their games back to Brevard Memorial Stadium after spending the 2010 season at Asheville HS Memorial Stadium. The transition back to Brevard will be key to the Tornados as BC will be welcomed back by their fans with the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background of the stadium.

old man on Campus The Tornados put their first four year class of seniors on the field in the 2009 season. With the program restarting in 2006, only one player remains from that inaugural group in fullback Derek Church. With Church suffering injuries in multiple years, he is ready to make an impact and move up in the BC offensive record books in his senior campaign.

bringing the pressureChristian Lumbu and Richard Ray both have been a terror on opposing offensive lines this season, as the duo have teamed up to combine for nine sacks on the season, in leading the South Atlantic Conference’s top defensive line. Lumbu leads the conference in sacks on the season with seven, while Ray has two two-sack contests on the season, and together with Rufus Jenkins and others, lead the SAC with 18 sacks on the season.

Winning in the SACThe Tornados continue to realize that winning in the South Atlantic Conference is a key to football success, as last year’s SAC Champion Wingate went all the way to the NCAA Division II Regional Semifinals. This season, with their schedule set for three home conference games and four on the road, Brevard will look to overcome being picked eighth in the SAC Coaches Preseason poll and continue their improvements in their fourth season as full members of the SAC and the NCAA Division II.

100 Yard barrierA number of successful Brevard College ballcarriers have broken the 100 yard rushing mark in a game in their illustrious career, including all-time leading rushers Neville Bryce, John Taylor and Kelvin Jeter. However, this season, the Tornados have had two consecutive games in which a ball carrier was unable to break the 100 yard mark, the first time since the 2010 season that a single BC ballcarier was unable to break the 100 yard rushing mark in back-to-back contests.

1,000 Yard ClubKelvin Jeter became the first 1,000 running back in a single season in Brevard College football history, leading the Tornados with seven 100 yard rushing games in the 2010 season, including breaking a team record 95-yard rushing touchdown against Southern Virginia last season. Now Jeter sets his sights on another record, sitting 367 yards behind Michael Crumbaker for the BC total offense career record.

A Nose for the ballPrince Simunyu leads the Tornados defensive effort with 69 tackles on the season and has four 10-plus tackle contests in the past five games. The Tornados leading tackler for the past three seasons, Simunyu is also leading the South Atlantic Conference in tackles with 9.9 tackles per game and looks to join Stanley Jones as SAC leaders in tackles for a season.

NCAA rankings/offenseThe Tornados rushing offense is currently ranked fifth in the nation, averaging 278.7 yards per game, while the passing offense is ranked 147th. In total offense, Brevard is 89th with 356.0 yards per game and BC is 55th overall in scoring offense at 29.3 points per game.

NCAA rankings/DefenseDefensively, Brevard is ranked 94th in run defense, averaging 159.1 yards per game and 86th in pass defense at 217.9 yards per game. Brevard is 34th nationally in sacks per game with 2.6 and is 41st in tackles for loss with 7.4 per game. The Tornados are 84th in total defense at 377.0 yards per game and tied for 101st in scoring defense at 30.0 points per game.

Individually, Christian Lumbu is tied for 7th overall with 1.14 sacks per game, while Richard Ray is tied for 79th. Prince Simunyu is tied for 24th in tackles per game with 9.9 and Lumbu is tied for 20th overall in tackles for loss with 1.71 per game

NCAA rankings/Special TeamsThe Tornados rank 72nd in the NCAA in kickoff return yards, averaging 20.8 yards per return, 140th in net punting at 28.0 and 47th in punt returns yards at 11.0 yards per return.

Individually, Austin Clark is tied for 38th overall in averaging 1.0 field goals per game, while Reese is tied for 99th in scoring with 6.3 points per game. Eric Watts is 14th overall in punting, averaging 41.7 yards per attempt.

rodney Donald - Donald became the fifth different BC running back and seventh overall to break the 100 yard rushing barrier this season with his latest performance against Southern Virginia University. Donald has seen action twice at running back this season and has accumulated 268 yards on just 30 carries, averaging 8.9 yards per carry. His 191 yard

rushing performance against Southern Virginia was the fourth-highest in BC history. A talented runner between the tackles, Donald is one of two fullbacks who have helped the Tornados bridge the gap since Derek Church went down with a season-ending injury, and will look to carry a more significant role in the BC offense as the Tornados look to wrap up their final four games of the season in their quest for the second winning record in BC modern program history.

Jack Woerner - Woerner has already been featured among the players to watch for the Tornados, but he has recorded breakout performances, cracking the century mark in two of the last three games, including 102 yards on 15 carries last weekend against Southern Virginia. The freshman fullback combined with Donald for

293 yards on the ground as the Tornados rushed for a 2011 NCAA Division II season-high 519 yards against the Knights. Woerner will look to continue to move the chains for the Tornados against a stingy North Greenville defense that shut down the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears “Bear-Bone” option attack to a season-low 100 yards in their matchup earlier this year.

prince Simunyu - The leader of the Tornados defensive front seven, Simunyu has taken his game to new heights this season as the senior linebacker currently leads the South Atlantic Conference with 69 tackles on the season and is on pace second- highest tackles mark in Brevard College history behind Stanley Jones’ 116 tackles mark. Simunyu has recorded four double-digit tackles games and

nearly missed out on his fifth straight with nine solo tackles this past Saturday against Southern Virginia. Simunyu is currently 1.0 tackles ahead of Christian Lumbu for the BC all-time career tackles for loss mark with 28.5 tackles for loss and continues to assault the BC record books, sitting second overall in all tackles categories, including solo, assisted and overall. He will look to continue his pace as he looks to stop the NGU balanced offensive attack.

michael Gist - The Brevard College all-time interceptions leader, Gist finally got on the board this season with two picks last week against Southern Virginia. A 6-1 senior from North Augusta, S.C., Gist is two years removed from a five interception season where he returned three picks for touchdowns and looks to continue his

sticky fingers around the passing attacks for teams as he is tied for the conference lead in interceptions on the season. Gist is also one of the more sure-handed tacklers on the season in the SAC in which he is third on the team with 51 tackles on the season. He will look to keep Willy Korn and the NGU offense in check from the backline as he leads the best secondary in the SAC this season with eight interceptions.

Willy Korn - Since his first step on the campus of North Greenville last season, Korn has made a positive impact in returning the Tornados to their former glory in the mid-2000s, helping North Greenville to their first winning season since the 2006 Victory Bowl season. Korn lead the Crusaders back to Victory Bowl glory last year and currently

has North Greenville at 5-2, 4-1 against South Atlantic Conference opponents on the season. Korn leads the Cruasders’ spread option attack under Coach Jamie Chadwell and is averaging 160.0 yards per game through the air and 26.0 rushing yards per game. A little erratic in the pocket, completing only 54.7 percent of his passing attempts with seven interceptions, Korn has been at his best in crunch time and will look to lead the Crusaders to their fourth straight victory.

Teryan rucker - Rucker leads the North Greenville rushing attack on the season as the Crusaders average 232.0 yards per game on the ground, 19th among all NCAA Division II institutions. Rucker has saved his best for schools in the South Atlantic Conference this season as the 5-8 running back has three 100-plus yard rushing performances

including a season-high 165 yards on 22 carries against Tusculum College, and has scored four rushing touchdowns against SAC opponents on the season. Rucker will look to keep the clock running against the Tornados defense which comes into the game ranked 94th in the NCAA against the run in the 2011 season.

Johnathan Sharpe - Sharpe recorded his best game of the season against an opponent which runs a similar offense to the Tornados as the junior linebacker from Conway, S.C. recorded 14 stops, 2.5 behind the line of scrimmage in the Crusaders 34-27 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne earlier this season. Sharpe will look to stop the BC rushing

attack which comes into the game fifth in the NCAA Division II and force Brevard to take to the air and continue to build on his team-leading 43 tackles on the season as the Wofford transfer will battle in the trenches with the Tornados offensive line, led by preseason All-SAC selection Caleb Campbell.

Nick rosamonda - When BC quarterback Aaron Reese drops back to pass, Rosamonda will be among the NGU secondary that will look to stop the connection between Reese and his favorite receiver Eric Watts on Saturday afternoon. A 6-1 defensive back, Rosamonda is tied for the team lead with 43 tackles on the year and has

proven surprisingly adept in attacking at the line of scrimmage with a team-high 7.5 tackles for loss and also has added two interceptions and four passes defensed. This ability to be around the line of scrimmage, as well as drop back in coverage could disrupt a Tornados offense which has been striving to balance over the past few weeks.

Brevard opened the scoring in the contest on their opening drive as Reese marched the Tornados down the field. After a Jeter carry put the ball on the BC 40 yard line, Reese took the snap and ran the option around the edge, keeping the ball himself as he carried the ball all the way down to the GWU 15 yard line. Four plays later, on fourth-and-1, Church bulled his way into the end zone at the 11:32 mark, and following Austin Clark’s extra point, the Tornados led 7-0.

The defenses controlled the remainder of the first quarter as both teams were forced to punt after consecutive three-and-outs, before Gardner-Webb started their third drive of the game in BC territory following a 22 yard punt return by Ricky Rhodes, giving the Runnin’ Bulldogs the ball on the BC 38. After a pair of first downs, Richard Ray burst through the line of scrimmage, sacking Browning inside the red zone and the Tornados defense stiffened up, giving way to a Trever Austin 30 yard field goal with 1:55 left in the first half, putting the score at 7-3.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs took their first lead of the contest on their next drive as GWU used six plays to move 37 yards, finishing on Little’s 15 yard carry into the end zone early in the second half, putting GWU up 10-7.

The Tornados responded on their next drive, using a 19 yard carry by Church and a 15 yard face mask penalty to most the ball into Gardner-Webb territory. A 15 yard pickup by Kelvin Jeter put Brevard inside the red zone at the GWU 15 yard line, but that was as close as the Tornados were able to come. Clark drilled in the field goal attempt from 33 yards out with 8:05 left in the first half to tie the score up at 10 apiece.

Gardner-Webb would score twice more in the first half as Perry would haul in a 34 yard touchdown reception from Browning, capping off a five play-70 yard drive with 6:03 left in the half and Austin drilled a 33 yard field goal in the closing seconds to give the Runnin’ Bulldogs the 20-10 halftime lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, Little punched the ball in from one yard out to cap the longest drive of the evening as GWU moved the ball 80 yards in 14 plays and 3:37 to go up 27-10.

The Tornados continued to battle back, as Church added his second touchdown of the evening, this time bulldozing his way in from 10 yards out to put the score at 27-17 with 10:56 left in the contest, but the Runnin’ Bulldogs put the game away on Little’s three yard carry, ending the suspense in the 2011 season opener for both squads.

Derek Church capped on a 196 yard offensive performance with a three yard touchdown catch with 3:20 in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 35 apiece and Darren Walker picked off Keahn Wallace’s pass on third down in the first overtime period, paving way to Austin Clark’s game-winning 18 yard field goal as the Tornados survived a wild home opener with a 38-35 victory over the visiting Golden Bulls.

In their first contest back in Brevard Memorial Stadium, Brevard (1-1) and Johnson C. Smith (1-1), combined to provide a complete display off offensive prowess as the Tornados racked up 305 yards on the ground, led by Church’s 161 yards on 29 carries, while Wallace completed 25 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns for the Golden Bulls.

Fittingly enough though, it was a defensive stop that made the difference as Walker stepped in front of a pass from Wallace targeted for Daniel Taylor on third-and-12 in the opening possession of the first overtime period, giving the Tornados the chance to go for the win.

An Aaron Reese incompletion set up a Brevard field goal attempt late in the fourth quarter but Clark was unable to connect from 40 yards out, pulling the ball wide left to keep the score at 35-28, but the Tornados defense rose up to the challenge, forcing a three-and-out. The BC special teams got involved in the action, breaking through the line on Tyler Rabb’s ensuing punt attempt and the ball was tipped, fluttering 16 yards before being downed on the Brevard 34 yard line.

With new life, the Tornados moved the ball 66 yards on 11 plays, scoring on fourth-and-goal from the three yard line as Reese found Church all by himself in the front of the end zone with 3:20 on the close to tie the game.

The Golden Bulls had one final chance in regulation, marching down the field, but Rommie Fairchild broke through the line of scrimmage on third-and-five on the Brevard 22 yard line, sacking Wallace in the middle of the field, and during the ensuing scramble to get the JCSU field goal unit on the field and in play, Julius Wright’s 40 yard attempt was pushed wide right as time expired, sending the teams to overtime.

Johnson C. Smith took over possession first in the overtime period and after Rufus Jenkins nearly picked off Wallace’s first pass attempt, Walker stepped in front of the desperation pass into the end zone, giving the Tornados the chance to go for the win.

Brevard moved the ball down to the JCSU one yard line before bringing Clark onto the field to attempt the game-winner. After a timeout by JCSU in attempt to ice the kicker, the freshman from Grayson, Ga. calmly drilled the game-winner through the uprights, setting off a celebration in Brevard Memorial Stadium as the Tornados defeated the Golden Bulls, 38-35.

The Tornados struck first as Aaron Reese hooked up with Eric Watts on a five yard touchdown pass, but a Brevard fumble in the third quarter turned the tide as Mars Hill scored 21 unanswered points as the Lions held off the Tornados in Brevard Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon, 28-10.

The BC offense moved the ball down the field on their second possession as Jeter broke a 39 yard run down to the Mars Hill 23 yard line on the second play of the drive. Six plays later, on third-and-two from the five yard line, Reese targeted Watts just inside the goal line and the duo connected for their second touchdown in as many weeks, giving the Tornados the 7-0 advantage with 2:21 left in the first quarter.

The following Lions possession took advantage of two Brevard defensive pass interference penalties for first downs as they used a quick no-huddle offense to march down the field, moving 67 yards on eight plays, before Richt found Patrick Park on a short out in front of the left end zone pylon and the fullback dove across the goal line, knotting the score up at 7 apiece with 14:03 left in the half.

Another big run, this time by Reese as the quarterback carried for 29 yards and a roughing the punter penalty contributed to the next BC scoring drive as the Tornados advanced the ball to the Mars Hill 24 yard line. However, the drive stalled, leaving the Tornados to settle for a 39 yard field goal attempt by reigning Austin Clark, and the freshman delivered, booting the ball through the uprights to give BC the 10-7 advantage.

The Lions continued to attack the Tornados through the air on their next possession as Richt went 5-for-6 on the drive for 51 yards, hooking up with three different receivers before finding Holmes in the back of the end zone at the 6:06 mark to give the Lions the 14-10 advantage.

A Brevard College fumble on their first possession in the second half gave the Lions excellent field position at the BC nine yard line, and Jonas Randolph found the end zone for the first of his two rushing touchdowns of the game, carrying the ball in on the first play from scrimmage to give Mars Hill the 21-10 lead.

Mars Hill added one final scoring drive spanning the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter as Randolph capped of an 11 play-83 yard drive with a two yard touchdown carry to give the Lions the 28-10 advantage with 13:46 left in the contest.

Brevard mounted one final drive, moving the ball 62 yards on 13 plays, but the Tornados were stopped on downs at the Mars Hill 16 yard line as Reese’s final pass attempt fell incomplete as the Tornados fell to the Lions, 28-10.

Eric Watts became the first BC wide receiver to break the 100 yard receiving mark since the 2008 season and Kelvin Jeter became the Tornados all-time leading rusher, but the Wingate Bulldogs came back to crash the Brevard celebration, scoring 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter as the Tornados fell in Irwin Belk Stadium on Saturday afternoon, 35-31.

Watts hauled in five catches for 114 yards and three touchdowns, while Rodney Donald led the Tornados (1-3, 0-2 SAC) rushing attack with 11 carries for 77 yards, but three BC turnovers allowed Wingate (2-2, 1-0 SAC) to stay in the contest and Cody Haffly delivered, going 25-for-32 for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Bryan Caffrey was the main target, going for nine catches and 91 yards and a score, and Josh Covington added 10 carries for 80 yards and rushing touchdown as the Bulldogs overcame a halftime deficit for the second straight season in their come-from-behind victory over the Tornados.

The momentum was in Brevard’s favor at the start of the second half as Haffly dropped back to pass on the first play from scrimmage and was pulled down by Rufus Jenkins. The ball popped loose and in the ensuing scramble Christian Lumbu came out of the pile with the ball, giving the Tornados the ball on the WU 13 yard line. Five plays later, Donald went into the middle of the pile, across the goal line from one yard out to put the score at 24-7 in favor of the Tornados with 12:28 on the clock in the third quarter.

Haffly directed Wingate for their first offensive touchdown of the game with 5:04 left in the third quarter, capping off a 10 play, 85 yard drive as he found Caffrey in the end zone for the 14 yard scoring strike, but the Tornados again answered as Reese found Watts for his third touchdown of the day, this one from 63 yards out as the teams headed into the fourth quarter with Brevard up 31-14.

The Bulldogs scored on the first play of the final quarter as Haffly capped off a six play, 52 yard drive by hitting Ellington for an eight yard touchdown to bring the Bulldogs back to within 10 points at the 14:54 mark.

The Wingate defense forced the Tornados to a three-and-out on the next possession and on the ensuing punt attempt, Pinkard fielded the ball at the Wingate 43 yard line and a block sprung him free down the sideline before Trey Bray chased him down at the Brevard eight yard line. A sideline infraction gave Wingate the ball on the BC 4 yard line and the Bulldogs scored on the first play from scrimmage as Covington carried over the goal line to put the score within three at 31-28 with 12:14 left in the game.

Reese was intercepted on the next BC drive and Haffly took over on the BC 34 yard line, moving the Bulldogs down the field on nine plays before Andrew Nallenweg gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game with a one yard plunge up the middle with 6:57 on the clock and Matthew Sierk’s extra point put Wingate up 35-31.

Brevard was unable to answer on their final possession and the Bulldogs were able to run out the clock as the Tornados fell on the road in Irwin Belk Stadium, 35-31.

Aaron Reese set a Brevard single game record with five rushing touchdowns and Reese, Kelvin Jeter and Jack Woerner all broke the century mark on the ground as the Tornados overcame a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Deonte Gist in the first play of the game to defeat the visiting Tusculum Pioneers, 41-24.

Reese broke the single game rushing touchdown record set last season by both Thadus Benton and Neville Bryce and he led the Tornados (2-3, 1-2 SAC) with 153 yards on 19 carries as Brevard recorded a season high 388 rushing yards in the game, while holding the ball for 38:06 in the game. Woerner recorded his first 100-plus yard rushing game in his first start on the season, carrying the ball 26 times for 113 yards and a touchdown, while Jeter added 110 yards on 14 carries as the Tornados recorded their first conference win of the season.

The Pioneers took over after the Tornados opening drive in the second half stalled at the TC 34 yard line, but on Tusculum’s first play from scrimmage, Dickey was stripped by Christian Lumbu and Anthony Shakir pounced on the loose ball to give BC the ball on the 27 yard line. Four plays later, Reese picked up his fourth rushing touchdown of the game, carrying the ball in from 15 yards out to give the Tornados the 27-10 lead with 6:13 left in the third quarter.

A Brevard special teams miscue extended the next Pioneers possession as Andre Overholt was unable to corral Any Rosetti’s punt attempt, giving Tusculum the ball on the BC 18 yard line, and Slaven gave TC their first offensive touchdown of the game, finding Rodriguez in the right flat from six yards out to cut the lead back to 10 at 27-17.

The Tornados fumbled on their next possession as Woerner lost control of the ball at the Tusculum 49 yard line, and flashbacks of last week’s heartbreaking loss to Wingate began to flash in the fans’ minds. However, Rufus Jenkins quickly ended those concerns as the sophomore linebacker picked the ball off the turf after a miscommunication between Slaven and Marcus Foster, and the BC linebacker was tackled down at the Tusculum four yard line. Woerner plowed up the middle two plays later, extending the lead back to 34-17 with 42 seconds left in the third quarter.

Tusculum continued to showcase their special teams as Foster returned the following kickoff 62 yards down to the Brevard eight yard line, and Slaven found Gist in the end zone from eight yards out, as the Pioneers answered the BC touchdown over a period of 14 seconds to put the score at 34-24 heading into the final quarter.

Reese scored the record breaking touchdown, closing out a six play, 64 yard drive, diving in from two yards out to give the Tornados the 41-24 advantage, and though Tusculum challenged to cut back into the lead, Cornelius’ 28 yard field goal attempt was hooked left and neither team was able to add to the score as the Tornados recorded their second consecutive victory over the Pioneers in the friendly confines of Brevard Memorial Stadium.

Kelvin Jeter’s one yard touchdown scamper sent the Tornados and Bears into triple overtime on Saturday afternoon at Moretz Stadium, but Brevard was unable to put points on the board in the final period as Major Herron scored from 25 yards out in leading L-R past BC, 33-27.

The Bears struck first on the opening drive of the game as Lenoir-Rhyne moved the ball 64 yards on 15 plays, converting once on third down and once on fourth down before Herron plowed his way through the line of scrimmage from one yard out to give the hosts the 7-0 lead with 8:42 left in the first quarter and the lead was extended as the BC special teams woes continued for the third straight week as Michael Green returned a BC punt 53 yards into the end zone to give the Bears the 14-0 lead.

The Tornados responded on the following drive, taking over on their 35 yard line after Kelvin Jeter’s 24 yard kickoff return. Brevard marched down the field on 10 plays, with Jeter recording 22 yards on the ground and Reese picking up a key third down with a 15 yard carry, before the Tornados drive stalled on the 20 yard line. Freshman kicker Austin Clark drilled the 37 yard field goal attempt to put Brevard on the board with 2:04 left in the first half.

After both sides punted to open the second half, the Tornados took advantage of an L-R personal foul and a defensive pass interference penalty to move the ball down to the Bears one yard line. Reese carried the ball across the stripe on second-and-goal cutting into the lead. Clark’s extra point attempt failed, leaving the score at 14-9 with 10:56 remaining in the third quarter.

Michael Gist gave the Tornados their first lead of the game as the senior safety picked up the fumble, racing 62 yards down the field for the score with 3:06 left in the third quarter, and Reese’s pass to Overholt was good as Brevard went up 17-14 with one quarter remaining in the game.

The Bears tied the game up with 3:35 left in the game on Colin Corpe’s 25 yard field goal attempt and nearly won in regulation, but Corpe’s 56 yard attempt fell short as the teams went into overtime knotted up at 17 apiece.

The teams traded field goals in the first overtime as Clark drilled home the 30 yard attempt, while Corpe matched with a 33 yarder to send the teams into the second extra frame.

This time both teams traded touchdowns as Chris Robinson carried the ball in from 15 yards out, while Jeter answered for the Tornados, carrying the ball across the line on fourth-and-goal from one yard out to send both teams to the first triple overtime game in the SAC this season.

The Tornados took possession first in the third overtime period, but Reese was sacked by Long on third-and-five, forcing Brevard to attempt the go ahead field goal. Clark’s 44 yard attempt had the distance, but hooked left, leaving the Bears needing just a field goal to take the victory. On Lenoir-Rhyne’s third play from scrimmage, Herron took the snap and went the distance, carrying the ball in from 25 yards out to give the Bears the 33-27 victory.

Led by Rodney Donald and Jack Woerner’s 100-plus yard rushing performances, the Tornados overcame seven turnovers and an early deficit as Brevard defeated Southern Virginia University at Bobby Williams Field on Saturday afternoon, 41-21.

Stevenson completed a 10 yard pass to Beamon on third-and-three to keep the drive alive, and three plays later Washington plunged over the goal line from one yard out to give SVU the 7-0 advantage with 7:17 left in the first quarter. Southern Virginia wasted no time in striking again as Eytcheson carried the ball in to give the Knights the 14-0 lead with 4:24 left in the first quarter in front of their Homecoming crowd.

The Tornados rallied back on their first play from scrimmage on their next possession as Donald took the handoff from Reese and sprinted 50 yards, past the goal line to halve the deficit with 4:04 on the clock in the opening quarter. Brevard evened the score in the second quarter on their first drive as Donald capped off a seven play, 68 yard drive with a five yard run, tying the game up at 14 apiece. The Tornados took their first lead of the game as Reese found Eric Watts in the end zone from 31 yards out with 7:42 left in the first half to put Brevard up 21-14.

Neither team was able to score the remainder of the half, but the Tornados were able to expand their lead in the third quarter, with Woerner carrying the load. The freshman fullback opened the drive at the SVU 45 yard line with a 24 yard carry, and then one play later went up the middle for 21 yards, crossing the goal line to put Brevard up 28-14 with 6:20 left in the third quarter.

Another interception led to Brevard points at the start of the fourth quarter as Rashad Dirton picked off a pass, returning it 18 yards back to the Brevard 44 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Overholt took the pitch around the end, carrying the ball 56 yards and outracing the defense to the pylon to give BC the 35-14 advantage.

Turnovers again were the story of the next score, this time with Southern Virginia taking advantage of Brevard miscues as Kody Winsor picked up a mistimed BC pitch and rumbled in from 10 yards out to cut into the lead with 12:58 left in the game.

Brevard recorded one final score in the contest as senior fullback Jerel Drew carried ended a seven play, 70 yard drive with a three-yard scoring plunge with 1:01 left in the contest, but Arrick Blevins’ extra point attempt missed to put the score at 41-21.

On their last gasp, Stevenson was again picked off by Gist and the Tornados ran out the clock to defeat the Knights, 41-21.
