THIS YEAR, THE FDA TOOK A HUGE STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION WITH ITS BAN ON TRANS FATS IN FOODS.

Of course, whenever the FDA bans something, we know we need to take another serious look at our habits and what we’ve been putting in our bodies. For a long time, junk food has been filled with trans fats, which are used as preservatives and flavor-boosters, but also cause heart disease. And although we’ve known trans fats aren’t healthy, they were allowed in food until recently. Companies have until 2018 to phase trans fat from their products, which I think is a big step in the right direction

Growing up, my parents bought us kids all kinds of garbage. I ate processed foods that I wouldn’t dream of eating now, (at the time, I ate them because they tasted good and I didn’t know better). Things like Gushers, Fruit Roll-Ups, Tootsie Rolls — all of those “snacks” contained tons of hydrogenated oil, high fructose corn syrup, and toxic food dyes (Red #40, Yellow #5, Blue #2 ... since when are colors and numbers considered food?). If you really want a scare this Halloween, just read Dr. Mercola's post on "Toxic Food Dyes."

Hydrogenated fats are vegetable fats that are liquid at room temperature, chemically altered to become solid at room temperature. When you consume these fats, the increased density of the fat makes your blood denser, which forces your heart to pump harder. The extra strain on your heart causes problems with circulation, which leads to heart disease, Alzheimers, and more. Many foods also contain

three to five different kinds of processed sugar, which, in addition to being difficult to pronounce, are difficult for your body to digest. When you start

paying attention to labels, you realize that nearly all of the processed foods we consume contain hydrogenated oils or man-made sugars, which is just plain scary.

When I first started watching what I ate, trans fats and high fructose corn syrup were the first to go. I’ve since been very careful about these harmful ingredients. The link between trans fats, heart disease, and obesity is a strong one. Trans fats are much easier and less expensive to use, but have a tremendous effect on our health when consumed

regularly. We can’t feed our bodies terrible things and expect them to operate normally. To put this into perspective, it is estimated that the United States will save roughly $140 billion in health care costs just by removing these ingredients from our food!

The phase out of trans fats is a big win for health junkies like me, but I know that there are still other harmful ingredients lurking in our processed foods.

A good rule of thumb is to stick with foods that have been made by nature/grown from the ground and to keep your distance from those made by man in a factory or laboratory. I think that this Halloween is the perfect time to start taking a good, hard look at the labels on candy and other junk food to see what is being added. What you find may be scarier than any ghost or goblin!

With Halloween just around the corner, consider the labels, and try to celebrate the holiday in moderation. Remember, sugar is addictive. So once you start eating lots of sweets, they become difficult to stop eating. Try doing a sugar detox, and after two or three weeks of not eating sugar, your body will start to recover and adapt, and you won’t crave the sugars you craved before. You’ll start realizing just how sweet non-sweet foods really are, and how sweet healthy foods can be.

Have a sweet month!

HERE’S TO A HEALTHIER HALLOWEEN!

You’ve heard it your whole life: Visit the dentist twice per year for routine checkups. And on some level, you probably understand that it’s a good idea, but has anyone ever really explained to you why these checkups are so important? Well, you’re about to find out!

For some kids, there’s no better way to spend an afternoon than with a bright box of crayons and pages of outlined pictures just begging to be filled in. Coloring allows for total creative freedom. Unfortunately, kids grow up, and that coveted 64-pack of crayons is reduced to a black pen and a notepad, digital or otherwise. Yet, the coloring book is making a comeback, and it’s not geared towards children.

Of the books that currently top Amazon’s best-seller lists are coloring books for adults. According to psychologists, coloring in adulthood is a low-impact method for creative expression. Free of chunky lines and silly cartoon characters, these coloring books are designed using sophisticated images and patterns, and intricate details that have a profound effect on stressed-out adults.

While adult coloring books aren’t necessarily an alternative to art therapy, which is more calculated in its methods, they do take adults back to simpler, less stressful times. In an interview with the Huffington Post, psychologist Antoni Martínez suggests coloring is more a “relaxation technique.” In order to unwind, those more tense adults among us can relieve stress on mental health and refocus energy on important tasks.

Where coloring books once brought worlds to life for budding young artists, now they’re the latest

The role of a dental checkup is similar to the habit of getting your vehicle in for an inspection, tune-up, oil change, and wash. Periodically, it’s important to get things looked at to make sure they’re working the way they’re supposed to. On the topic of your oral health, here are a few things the dental checkup can help you avoid:

1. Gum Disease. Your mouth naturally builds up plaque when you eat. Even with regular brushing and flossing, bacteria accumulates and hardens as tartar. If you don’t remove it before it embeds itself underneath your gum tissues, it can release acids that dissolve away the bone in your teeth.

medium for adults in need of a creative, more childlike outlet. If you’re in the market for something new to help disconnect from a long day, try one of these best-sellers:

2. Tooth Decay. A little cavity is easy to fix, but a big cavity can become a big problem. In the most serious stage, cavities can lead to the loss of a tooth, with a lot of suffering and swelling along the way. A lost tooth could create a domino effect and dangerous pressure on the other teeth.

3. Chronic Disease. The bacteria you get from gum disease are linked to heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and a whole slew of other problems. All of the accumulated gunk on your teeth will produce billions of bacteria that can get into your bloodstream and ultimately burrow into the heart, brain, and other organs. These bacteria can weaken your immune system and cause disease.

Mike Hartwick, the founder and CEO of Surfset Fitness, noticed that surfing seemed to give him the best of both worlds in fitness, helping him lose weight and gain muscle definition without too much bulk. For those who like the idea of an exercise that helps them burn fat and get toned at the same time without bulking up, surfing is an ideal choice.

Of course, you may not have easy access to real surfing, depending on your proximity to the ocean. That’s why Surfset is such an intriguing workout option, functioning as the equivalent of a mechanical bull for surfing. If you haven’t heard of it before, the Surfset RipSurfer X is a total-body surf trainer that mimics the physical demands of surfing — but with no ocean required.

What’s cool about a surfing workout is that it starts with the need for constant balance, similar to an exercise ball. The tiny stabilizer muscles in your core get worked just as hard as the rest of your muscles, which means you’ll start to see six-pack abs as you go through the workouts. You can also use the board for high-intensity aerobic training, avoiding plateaus and creating meaningful change in the shape of your body without the risk of prolonged-use injury.

The board itself is adjustable and comes with four loops you can attach to standard resistance bands for additional strength training. Rather than isolating one muscle group in each workout like a bodybuilder, you can perform like an athlete and get a more natural, toned physique using the board. While you can focus on balance, weight loss, or muscle-building individually, Surfset also features a blended interval-based workout that combines everything for fast and efficient results — and teaches you how to surf too!

If you skip out on regular dental checkups, then you face the possibility of long-term health problems down the road. In the case of gum disease, it works in silence. You won’t usually see any obvious signs that damage is occurring (except for bleeding gums while brushing and flossing), and you won’t be aware of the complications you may face in the future by skipping dental checkups. Those issues may not show up for years, but you can save yourself a lot of pain and expense by just making sure you get into the dental office twice per year.

As you know, the earlier conditions are diagnosed, the better! In addition to tooth decay and gum disease, dentists also check for oral cancer, bite problems, and other issues to make sure everything is healthy. A regular dental checkup is comprehensive and entails more than you may have realized. If you can nip these problems in the bud and walk out with a beautiful, clean smile twice per year, it makes good sense to do it!

DIRECTIONSPlace all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. For a creamier, richer, less seedy consistency, mix the chia seeds and almond milk first. Enjoy!!
