Since its foundation in 1936, the NGK SPARK PLUG Group has been exploring the possibilities of ceramics, thus contributing to social development. It has been making efforts to establish a good relationship with customers under our corporate philosophy of “participation of all employees” and “producing quality products ,” which was the star t ing point of our sk i l led manufacturing. NGK SPARK PLUG however, is now entering a period of great changes although it has continued to expand its business mainly focusing on automotive-related business over its 80-year history; technological innovation as seen in the field of electric vehicles, is rapidly advancing with unimaginable speed and changing the whole industrial structure. 2030 Long-Term Management Plan “NITTOKU BX”

Currently, while NGK SPARK PLUG’s business centers around internal combustion engine business, it needs to explore new businesses and change its business structure for the company’s future, in addition to pursuing the internal combustion engine business.More specifically, the goal set for 2040 is to change the company’s business portfolio, reducing the proportion of the internal combustion engine business from the current level of 80% to 40% and raise the proportion of the non-internal combustion engine business from 20% to 60%. To achieve this goal, the 2030 Long-Term Management Plan NITTOKU BX sets a milestone aiming to change the proportions of the internal combustion engine and non-internal combustion engine businesses to 60% and 40%, respectively, by 2030.

Backcasting from the “2040 VISION”, we have created the “2030 Long-Term Management Plan NITTOKU BX”. Currently, we are in the final year of the 7th Mid-Term Management Plan, ending in March 2021, followed by a 4-year Mid-Term Management Plan, followed by a 5-year Mid-Term Management Plan to fulfill the 10-year Long-Term Management Plan.

Contributing to building a hydrogen-based society with ceramics technologies

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have the highest power generation efficiency among all types of fuel cells, and promise benefits such as compact size and low costs. NGK SPARK PLUG has developed an SOFC stack for use in home cogeneration systems. In addition to systems for household use, the company is also working on development of commercial and industrial systems, and is currently supplying planar cell stacks for Hitachi Zosen Corporation’s 20 kW class demonstration system.

We contribute to improvements in energy and environmental issues, utilizing our technologies for the mass production of ceramics and producing and distributing high-quality and long-life tubular cell stacks with thermal utilization capability for dispersed hybrid power systems.

Four companies in the Morimura Group establish a joint ventureMORIMURA SOFC TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD. commenced its business as an SOFC-related joint venture established by NGK SPARK PLUG, NORITAKE CO., LIMITED, TOTO LTD., and NGK INSULATORS, LTD. Taking pride in our proprietary ceramic technologies, we are advancing development of all-solid-state batteries that offer high capacity and high power with greater compactness and reduced weight. We make use of a proprietary oxide solid electrolyte material that has achieved the highest level of ionic conductivity among oxide-based solid electrolytes. Our goal is to commercialize the battery for use in home appliances, mobile phones, and drones, and to apply it to two-wheeled vehicles and other personal mobility applications.

LTCC materials and multilayer substrate technologyDevelopment of 5G-related components is advancing rapidly for full proliferation. We are making development efforts with the aim of moving into the new field by combining a low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) material, developed in-house, and the multilayer substrate technology fostered through manufacture of semiconductor packages. Integrating millimeter-wave circuits—the key to 5G—and an antenna, our antenna module reduces transmission losses and delivers high power, yet is compact.

Eco-friendly piezoelectric materialsPiezoelectric ceramics are used in a wide range of fields, from home appliances to industrial equipment. However, current piezoelectric ceramics contain large quantities of harmful lead, and there is ongoing need to develop practical, environmentally friendly piezoelectric ceramics that do not contain lead. NGK SPARK PLUG is currently working on practical products and devices that use the lead-free piezoelectric ceramics that it has developed.

“We only sell products which are usefulto customers.” Magobe Okura worked as a supplier and insisted on sincerity in his products. This sincerity was inherited by his eldest son Kazuchika. Kazuchika preached that “our ideal form consists of supplying quality products and bringing satisfaction to customers.” Based on the philosophy of quality products, he expanded the ceramics companies of Morimura.

As our business evolved from tableware to industrial products, we faced even stricter demands for product uniformity. In order to constantly realize the performance need by customers and to eliminate discrepancy among products, Magoemon Ezoe expected a high level of discipline and sense of participation to produce quality products. Employees at all workplaces devoted themselves to manufacturing which fulfilled such expectations. NGK SPARK PLUG was founded in 1936. However, our roots can be traced back more than 140 years to the Morimura Gumi which was established in 1876 by Ichizaemon Morimura, the forefather of the Morimura Group. Our founding father Ichizaemon Morimura was an honest and passionate merchant. Determined to reclaim wealth which had flowed overseas, Ichizaemon embraced the challenge of foreign trade for the prosperity of Japan. Eventually, the Morimura Gumi began to manufacture ceramics and the Morimura Group was born, ultimately leading to the founding of numerous prominent companies including NGK SPARK PLUG.

High-End Plugs for Aftermarket

Premium RX series plugs are the highest grade spark plugs for Automobiles and have a ruthenium center electrode and a ground electrode with a projected platinum tip to ensure excellent ignitability and combustion efficiency. Iridium MAX series plugs, meanwhile, have an iridium center electrode and a platinum tip on the ground electrode, providing long life. IRI series plugs are also available for modified engines.

NGK Spark Plugs include green plugs, projected plugs, multiple ground electrode plugs and precious metal plugs. Smaller diameter long-reach plugs and Bi-Hex plugs engineered to meet diversification of the engine are also available. Spark plugs which thread diameter is 10mm or 8mm are used to suit the engine design.

This product converts the in-vehicle battery supply voltage into high voltage with appropriate timing and immediately for discharge of spark plugs.

Ignition Coil for Aftermarket

This product suppresses electromagnetic interference generated by the engine’s ignition system. It includes motorcycle and general-purpose spark plug caps as well as motorcycle racing cables, caps and cables. We also have power cables for motorcycles. These power cables delivers ultra-low resistance of 0.5kΩ (0.9kΩ/m) along with superb ignitability and acceleration.

NGK cables for automobiles are highly effective in suppressing electromagnetic interference generated by the engine’s ignition system. OZAS®-S and ZFAS®-S are sensors which have achieved smaller and lighter designs and high vibration resistance considering harsh environmental conditions for motorcycles.

Piezoelectric ceramic sensor for the detection of vibration caused by engine knocking. Knock sensors are used for ignition timing control that contributes to engine performance, fuel economy, and engine protection when feeding low octane fuel.

ERAS®-K (Knock Sensor)

The hydrogen leak detection sensor detects leakage of hydrogen, the fuel of fuel cell vehicles, drawing on the thermally conductive characteristics of the element. The sensor uses an MEMS element to achieve rapid startup and response, and incorporates temperature and humidity correction for high accuracy.

This sensor can measure NOx concentration and oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas simultaneously in high-precision. It is built into the NOx after treatment system of gasoline lean burn engine or a diesel engine, by which is used for system control support and OBD, and will contribute to fuel efficiency and clean air. ZFAS®-N2 (NOx Sensor)

D e t e c t s a w i d e r a n g e o f t e m p e r a t u re s , f ro m lowtemperatures up to 950℃. With a highly heat resistant element made from electro-conductive ceramic ,or platinum and an easily-modified design, can be installed anywhere in the exhaust system, including the catalyst case. Achieves high reliability under severe conditions like high temperature and vibration.

NTK's BIDEMICS is the latest revolutionary insert grade to hit the HRSA material machining industry since the release of Whisker ceramics. BIDEMICS is a patented material with unique physical characteristics that has 1500 SFM speed capability beyond current whisker grades used on HRSA material applications.

NTK's premium ceramic grades ensure the user higher productivity. All of the grades show superior high temperature hardness, heat resistance and chemical stabil ity. NTK offers many types of ceramic cutting tool materials (silicon nitride-based, alumina-based and whisker-based) in a variety of geometries to meet customer demands.

NTK manufactures the most extensive line of specialized Swiss Tooling for turning, grooving, cut-off, threading, ID boring, and milling operations. Tool holders are available in common metric and inch versions. Our micro-grain carbide insert grades offer superior toughness & wear resistance to machine materials such as Titanium, Chrome, Stainless, Steels, and Non-ferrous.

OZAS®-S controls air-fuel ratio for exhaust gas clar i f icat ion, as a central component of emissions treatment systems. It generates 0 or 1V according to the oxygen concentration in exhaust gas. And it starts working quickly after engine start-up, even in cold weather conditions, thanks to its early activation capabilities.
