The Break-off Phenomenon

A Feeling of Separation from the EarthExperienced by Pilots at High Altitude

I is no cause for wonder that avi-ators have unique subjective ex-periences. M oreo ver, it is to be

expected that these experiences willchange with the changing characterof aviation and with differing circum-stances attending flight. T o keepabreast of the changing pattern of theaviator's experiences, periodic surveysar e necessary. During the course ofa recent inquiry, we heard pilots referto an event in their experience by theterm "break-off." Th is was definedas a feeling of physical separationfrom the earth when pi lot ing an air-

cra ft a t high altitude. System atic in-q t~ ir y isclosed that th is phenomenonis of sufficient importance to deserveinvestigation, a n d what follow$ wiil-marizes our findings.

PROCEDURE

One hundred and thirty-seven

From the San Jose State College, SanJose, California, and the U. S. Naval Schoolof Aviation Medicine, Pensacola, Florida.Dr. Clark is professor of psychology at SanJose State College.

Navy and Marine pilots were inter-viewed. All were engag ed in flyingjet aircraft , and their experience injets ranged from 100 to 2,200 hoursaloft , with a median of330 hours. Allhad flown solo above30,000 feet, andthe great majori ty above40,000 feet.Their experience in propeller type air-c raf t ranged f rom120 to 6,000 hours,with a median of 675 hours . Themedian age of the group was27.4years.

The data were obtained by meansof individual interviews, utilizing amodification of the critical incident

technique described by Flanagan2.After a statement of the general pur-pose of the study, it was emphasizedthat the reportswould contain only acode number for identification, andthus remain anonymous. A statementwas then read defining break-off asa feeling of physical separation fromthe earth. Th e pilot was asked whetherhe had ever had such an experience
