Breadth Assignment: Cut Paper Relief Sculpture AP Studio Art 3D
You will create an alternating and repetitive design using at least two original designs and cut paper. PRACTICE AND FINAL DUE: Tuesday, January 5, 2016
Pattern: repetition of a visual element. Relief: a sculpture consisting of shapes carved on a surface so as to stand out from the surrounding
background.
STAGE ONE Directions: Practice Designs on a 12” x 8” paper
Step 1: Using a ruler and LIGHT PENCIL LINES, divide the paper into even 2” x 2” squares
Step 2: With light pencil lines and a ruler, draw each of the design shapes pictured below. The dashed
lines are where the paper should be folded. The solid lines are where the paper should be cut. Center
the designs within the squares.
Step 3: Using an X-acto knife, carefully cut the designs as shown below. Use a magazine or matboard as
your cutting board. Then, using a ruler and bone folder, fold over the dotted lines carefully, forming the
required creases. Fold each tab to produce the relief effect.
Step 4: Use the remainder of the 2” x 2” squares on your paper to come up with your own creative designs.
Use the preliminary designs as a springboard for your own ideas. Invent 12 new designs.
Step 5: Choose two of your own design ideas for the final relief sculpture. Continue on to the second stage
(on
back of paper).

STAGE TWO Directions: Final Design on 16” x 22” paper
Step 1: Using a ruler and light pencil lines create a 2” border around your paper. The area within the border
should measure 12” x 18”.
Step 2: Using a ruler and light pencil lines, grid the inner area into 2-3” x 2-3” squares.
Step 3: Choose 2 of your own designs to duplicate. Create ONE template per design out of heavier paper
and
trace these templates on each square you will cut. ALTERNATE YOUR 2 DESIGNS square to square to add variety and create an engaging pattern.
Step 4: Carefully cut out your designs with the X-acto knife. Use a magazine or matboard as a cutting board.
Step 5: Turn the paper over and fold and crease where needed. Flipping the paper to the back side
eliminates
the need to erase all of the pencil marks on the front.
Step 6: Glue white or color paper to the back of your project. Adding a color or black paper behind will add
contrast (optional).
PROJECT CRITERIA:
-Completed both first and second stages following the directions
-Used your own cut paper design in the final project
-Alternated cut paper designs to establish a pattern
-Mounted the cut and folded sheet to a background sheet of white or color paper
GRADING:
Content: Meets the requirements stated above Design: Composition, what shapes you cut and the shadows created. Craftsmanship: Neat and clean appearance, precise measurements, no torn paper, no glue marks. Originality: Invent your own cut paper designs for your project.
