Au Naturel,

In these times of high technology and a fast paced lifestyle, we sometimes forget about what’s really important: not money, not fame, not the latest iPhone 6 (although I will get one!). What’s really important is our health, our well being, our family and friends, our peace of mind, connecting with nature, being creative, being natural.

In this issue, we explore ways to decompress, slow down, rejuvenate and find that peace of mind we all seek and deserve.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Brazil Magazine as we continue to share with you our favorite sites, sounds and thoughts of Brazil. Let us know how we’re doing, what you'd like to see, and send us your photos, favorite places and Brazil travel tips. Maybe they will appear in a future issue. In the mean time enjoy!

Bem Vindo ao Brazil Magazine!

TatuNatural Man, Environmentalist, Off the Grid

Page 11: Brazil Magazine - Au Naturel

Naturalist, environmentalist known just by the name Tatu lives off the grid in the mountains and forests of the area of Tombos, Minas Gerais. In the above picture by photographer Carlos Junior, Tatu show his skill with a bow and arrow he uses for hunting. Tatu’s grandparents were of the Carajás tribe of indigenous people that were native to the area and taught him how to live off the land and respect nature and animals.

Tatu, 50 years old, lives deep in the woods, surrounded by mountains, boulders, waterfalls and lush vegetation. Wildlife is diverse and plentiful; Capuchin monkeys, maned wolves and ocelot roam free in the dense forests of Tombos.

Tatu is also responsible for cataloging two species of orchids put on the endangered species list by IBAMA, Brazil’s environmental protection organization. Tatu’s extensive knowledge of the trees and plants makes him a sought after guide for universities and eco-tourists.

Giving Your Skin Breath... Tonya Judd M.H.

Our skin is our largest organ and is often referred to as our 3rd kidney. Our skin receives 1/3 of the blood circulated in the body and 25% of the bodies toxins are released through our skin each day. That’s 1/4 of the body’s detoxification that occurs through the skin! Adults eliminate over 1 pound of waste acids each day through sweat glands, yet the skin is the last organ we think of giving nutrients to and is the first to show signs of imbalance. Some signs of imbalance in the skin include: acne, cracked skin, dry skin, cellulite, brown spots, etc. Our skin needs to breathe and it needs nutrients. If our skin is clogged with dead skin cells, the elimination that should occur there is forced upon the kidneys and liver.

There is an easy yet amazing measure you can take to help your skin breathe, it is dry skin brushing. The benefits of dry skin brushing are numerous and essential for beautiful glowing skin. Dry skin brushing helps the skin to breathe by removing dead skin cells and opening clogged pores.

Dry skin brushing is best done once a day in the morning before showering. There is an order and direction in which you should brush.

This process should take approximately 5-10 minutes each morning. Also, use a good natural soap without chemicals and perfumes. If you find that you need to use a moisturizer try almond oil, coconut oil or other natural oil that will feed your skin and your body.

Remember whatever you place on your skin is absorbed directly into the blood stream, so be wise in your choice of what you are “feeding” your skin and your body.

Once you have been skin brushing for a few weeks you should start to notice the lessened need for moisturizers. You can get a brush almost anywhere just make sure it has natural fiber bristles.

Some of the amazing benefits you will see include:-smooth glowing skin-encourages the body’s discharge of metabolic waste so the body is able to run more effectively -helps ingrown hairs-moves lymph-stimulates nerve endings-stimulates hormone glands-tones muscles-tightens skin

-stimulates circulation- reduces cellulite

-stimulates oil glands and helps the skin produce protective and

moisturizing oils-strengthens the immune

system-diminishes stretch

marks considerably-opens the pores and

allows your body to easily release toxins through sweating

REJUVENATEHow To Stay In Shape While

Traveling

Thiago DomingosPhysical Education Professional / Rio de Janeiro

Traveling can be fatting! We stop training, sample all the delicious local cuisine, drink a caipirinha or two, too many! If we don’t watch out, we could return home with a few extra pounds!

Hello, my name is Thiago Domingos, and I'll give you some tips to help avoid interrupting your exercise routine during your vacation or work.

Working out and staying in shape is always a concern when traveling. In Brazil, especially beach cities like Salvador da Bahia and Rio de Janeiro where people are very body conscious, there are many fitness options. You could join a gym temporarily, and there are free workout stations along the beach in Rio de Janeiro, and even a few weight lifting areas.

The aim of bodybuilding is to increase muscle mass and strength, while functional training simulates body the movement usually performed on a daily basis.

Functional training originated by physiotherapists, which adds instability to basic physical exercises, improves the results regarding the performance and coordination of movements. It is currently used for the recovery stages of sport injuries or for improving quality of life.

The term training is a process of physical preparation, while the term functional refers to the vital functions, and the ability to perform

daily activities with efficiency and autonomy.

This method may be suitable for normal, sedentary people, athletes

and special groups that wish to improve the functional capacity of the body, improve performance in daily activities or sports specific movements. Functional training improves health and aesthetics, balance, cardiorespiratory endurance, strength, neuromuscular control and helps in the rehabilitation process of various diseases.

The movements used are integrated, flexible and unlimited. Requiring acceleration, deceleration and stabilization of the body. Simulating actions of everyday life, such as squatting, lifting, jump, push, pull, move and rotate. Exercise should be performed at minimum two times per week, with an average duration of 30 minutes per day.

With many people working at desks and sitting most of the day, there are several types of exercise needed for health. Exercises for

spine stabilization improve overall body posture; Balance and proprioception exercise

improve neuromuscular control; Flexibility

exercises restore the range of motion of one or more joints; Resistance exercises to promote functional strength.

Caution is always advised when training, with regards to progression, angulation, use of equipment, volume, intensity and time interval to be used, always respecting the

principle of biological individuality and the essence of functional training. So, check

with a doctor before beginning any training program and use the services of a professional trainer.

Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1940, Jorge Ben Jor took up bossa nova guitar playing after hearing João Gilberto but found the style too complex to execute. This led to his developing his own approach to the bossa nova that focused on playing the guitar as one would a bass — his early recordings are in fact bass-less. His first big hit as a singer/songwriter came at the age of 23 with "Mas, Que Nada." The song's subtle bossa nova groove proved so seductive that it was quickly covered by a number of Brazilian artists, most successfully by Sergio Mendes, then by pop group the Black Eyed Peas.

It was from the late '60s to mid-'70s that B e n e s t a b l i s h e d h i m s e l f a s a songwriting force within Brazil. Over the next ten to 15 years he expanded his reach, with varying success, to Europe and America (he's more popular in Europe than America). During that same time period Ben realized his dream of working with prominent African musicians when he collaborated with Nigeria's King Sunny Ade, and also was represented on an anthology of Brazilian music compiled by former Talking Head David Byrne.
