The flag of Brazil is referred to as the Auriverde which means “gold and green.” The background of the flag is an emerald green color with a yellow diamond in the center. In the middle of the yellow is a blue globe that looks like a night sky. It has 27 white-colored five-pointed stars, representing each of the states and also the Federal District. The center globe also has a white band that carries the motto ORDEM E PROGRESSO which means “order and progress.” The color green represents the forests, the color yellow represents the countries mineral wealth and the color blue represents the night sky. The stars are arranged in the pattern of the sky on the night of November 15, 1889, the night that Emperor Pedro II was deposed and Brazil was declared a republic. The current version of the flag was officially adopted on May 12, 1992.
