How Can Braven Increase Our Support of the Greater Good?
Car manufacturers switch to making masks
Braven designs Career Booster for seniors
-
● Vulnerable college grads will struggle to land strong jobs. Before COVID-19, college grads from low-income backgrounds earned 66¢ on the dollar to their higher income peers. Unemployment and underemployment are sky-rocketing. Our vulnerable citizens are at greater risk of both.
● Students who graduate in a recession are more likely to be scarred for life. Graduating in a recession leads to initial earnings losses and underemployment. Students who start underemployed are 5x more likely to be underemployed after 5 years.

Participant journey through the BoosterSamira, Recent grad, RUN
Samira signs up
Samira graduates on May 20. Around this time, RUN sends her a congrats email that includes the opportunity to sign up for the Booster. She doesn’t have a job yet and is a little stressed about what to do so she decides to sign up. Soon after, she gets a confirmation email from Braven that she’s in along with a timeline and what to expect and some forms to sign.
The Booster begins
The program launches a week before the first virtual workshop. Samira gets an email from Braven with more info on the program, steps to log into the Portal, and directions to join a peer group. Samira introduces herself to her peer group. Samira follows Braven’s guidance to calendar module work time and make sure the workshops are on her calendar. She fills out the pre-survey which includes a diagnostic to know where she is starting against the Booster skills.Week 1: Samira has a week to finish her first module. It’s three-hours long and as she goes through the content, she’s able to build out contingency plans, update her resume, and improve her LI profile. She uses VMock tool in the module to get input on her resume and the rubrics help her self-grade. Thursday, she attends the first workshop; it’s fun, engaging, rigorous, and takes her skills to the next level. Who knew group coaching could be so helpful! She spends the weekend editing her artifacts, creating a tracking system, and commits to finding 10 different opportunities. She applies to 8 of them.
The Booster Week 1
Week 2: Samira is proud of what she’s done so far. She wonders if she’ll get called back for any interviews.. She gets started on the second module which takes her through networking, using LI to network and find jobs, and interviewing. She also shares artifacts and advice with her peer group. She spends Tues reaching out to people for informational interviews and network-building. She spends Wed practicing some interview questions. Her goal this week is to contact 10 professionals in the fields of interest, find five more types of opportunities that align with her strengths, and apply to 10 more jobs. She gets on the second workshop on Thursday and the group coaching again is very helpful. What’s most helpful is learning how to use LI for jobs. She spends the weekend on LI and finds a few more opportunities that she applies for. She also completes her post-survey.

Participant post-journey unlocked!Samira, Recent grad, RUN
The Braven National Network
Samira is now part of a nation-wide Braven network on LinkedIn. She is able to connect with others who are affiliated with Braven - participants of other programs, professionals from across the country, and Braven staff. She’ll also have access to any ongoing support that is posted here. And, she can also pay-it-forward when the time comes.
1:1 coaching session
Samira clicks a link in the email that takes her to a scheduling system. When she signs up for a session with a Career Prep Partner, she gets a calendar invite with information on what to expect and how to come prepared. During the session, Samira gets feedback to raise the quality of her resume and interviewing skills that will make her more competitive in the job market. She gets some advice on her contingency plan and reflects on her growth and next steps. At the end of this session, Samira fills out a brief survey to assess the session and the volunteer.
Samira gets a message from Braven congratulating her for completing the program. The email also provides information on how to unlock the Braven National Network and her 1:1 coaching session, what to expect from each, and guidelines for engagement.

BOOSTER PARTICIPANT TESTIMONIALS “The amount of information I got out of it! I thought it was going to be a quick resume review. It was a lot more than I expected. It was how to take steps to interviewing, how to organize your application search. I got a lot of job websites that I signed up for immediately. This is beyond what I expected when I signed up!” Taylor, Middle TN State alumna
“I struggled with building my network. That’s one of my biggest fears when trying to find a job. The Booster taught me to put myself out there. It’s okay if you get denied. When one person tells me no, I can just go to the next.” Taneshia, Jackson State, alumni
On what was most surprising about the Booster… How open I was to engaging with every part of it. I’m more on the introverted side, shyer than I wish I was, but it was so interactive and helped me connect with others. I really didn’t expect me to be so open to getting feedback and allowing others to give me constructive ways to be better all over the country.” I definitely grew through the program. Alondra, KIPP NYC
