Welcome to BratislavaWillkommen in Bratislava

Over the course of its history, Bratislava was a significant Celtic centre; an important part of the Limes Romanus; a point where Slavic and Germanic tribes clashed; the coronation capital of Hungarian kings for around 300 years; the favourite summer residence of Empress Maria Theresa; a region famous for its rich winemaking tradition; and a city fenced in for four decades by the barbed wire of the iron curtain. Situated on the border of three countries, today Bratislava is a free, young and modern capital: one of the youngest, in fact, but also the most vibrant in Europe.All of these periods and the stories of its people have left their mark on this multi-cultural city, which can be seen in the myriad styles of its palaces’ facades, in the silhouettes of its numerous church spires, in its ragged centuries-old cobblestones, but mainly in the faces of its welcoming people. By strolling through Bratislava’s old, narrow streets; sitting on its picturesque promenades; walking along the Danube riverfront; one can feel immersed in the distinctive atmosphere of this exciting coronation town. One destination, three countries.

Im Laufe der Geschichte war Bratislava ein bedeutendes keltisches Zentrum, ein wichtiger Teil des Limes Romanus, ein Schnittpunkt, wo slawische und germanische Volksstämme aufeinandertrafen, 300 Jahre lang war sie die Krönungsstätte der ungarischen Könige, Lieblingsresidenz der Herrscherin Maria Theresia, eine Region bekannt für ihre reiche Tradition der Weinherstellung und eine Stadt, die für vier Jahrzehnte durch den Stacheldraht des Eisernen Vorhangs umzäunt war. Die Stadt Bratislava, die sich an der Grenze von drei Ländern befindet, ist heute eine freie, junge und moderne Hauptstadt, eine der jüngsten aber auch der dynamischsten in Europa.All diese Epochen und Geschichten ihrer Leute haben ein Zeichen an dieser multikulturellen Stadt hinterlassen, was man an den unzähligen Stilen ihrer Palastfassaden, an den Silhouetten zahlreicher Kirchtürme, an den unebenen, Jahrhunderte alten Pflastersteinen, aber vor allem an den Gesichtern ihrer freundlichen Leute sehen kann. Tickets are valid either for 15 minutes (only for direct journeys; cannot be used when changing vehicles) or 60 minutes. you can also buy tourist tickets. These are valid 24 hours, 48 hours, 3 days or 7 days. If you have a standard ticket, stamp it in the stamping machine nearest to you upon entering the vehicle.

Alojz Rigele (*1879 – †1940) was a multi talented sculptor. His works decorate the facades of buildings on the Palisady, Zamocka, Mytna or Vazovova streets. To this day, in the old town you can admire his sculpture of Jesus the Saviour on the facade of the Salvator apothecary on Panska street.

Viktor Oskar Tilgner (*1844 – †1896) was a sculptor and a portraitist working in Vienna. His most famous work – Ganymede’s fountain stands in front of the Slovak National theatre. When making it, Tilgner chose the Greek mythological motive of Ganymede, who served drinks to the Gods at the Olymp.

Viktor Oskar Tilgner (*1844 – †1896) war ein Bildhauer und Porträtist. Vor dem Slowakischen Nationaltheater steht sein berühmtestes Werk – der Ganymed-Brunnen. Bei seiner Gestaltung wählte Tilgner das Motiv des Ganymeden aus der griechischen Mythologie, der am Olymp den schmausenden Göttern Getränke ausschenkte.

filip Lenard (*1862 – †1947) was a talented physicist born in Bratislava. In the year 1905 he received the Nobel Prize, which makes him the only Slovak who’s ever received this prize. His experiments with cathode rays also contributed to the invention of the X-radiation generator.

He wrote a novel about his adventures called the Bratislava Robinson (Bratislavský Robinson).

ignatius Paul Pollaky (*1828 – †1918) was another adventurer who needed more than the Bratislava nature could offer him. He was a pioneer among private detectives in the United Kingdom and in other parts of the world. He was a very interesting person who even made into Sullivan‘s opera.

Johann Wolfgang Kempelen (*1734 – †1804) was a Hungarian polytechnic and inventor. His biggest fame came with his invention of the chess-playing automaton (The Turk), which was a talking machine or a special typewriter for the blind and visually impaired.

Jozefína Brunswick (*1779 – 31 March †1821) has charmed the world’s biggest music celebrity of the 18th century, L.van Beethoven. If Ludvig were a nobleman, we would most probably be reading very different stories about the two of them. However, due to his family background he was forced to write her secret letters and heartfelt sonatas. There was also a movie shot about this mysterious woman from Bratislava, called the Immortal mistress (Nesmrteľná milenka).

Falls Ludwig ein Adeliger gewesen wäre, würde man wahrscheinlich andere Geschichten schreiben, doch seine Abstammung führte dazu, dass er geheime Briefe und gefühlvolle Sonaten schrieb. Über die geheimnisvolle Frau aus Bratislava entstand auch der Film „Die unsterbliche Geliebte“.

Joseph Kaspar Mertz (*1806 – †1856) was a virtuoso guitar player also born in Bratislava. His guitar playing was perfect and he would play the most seductive melodies. He became Queen Caroline Augusta’s guitarist at the court and in the year 1856 his composition Concertino won the first international guitar competition in the world. (However Mertz never enjoyed this victory as he died of tuberculosis before the winners of the competition were announced.)

(Mertz hat dies jedoch nicht mehr erlebt, da er noch vor der Preisvergabe an Tuberkulose starb).

ThomasMesser (*1920 – May 15, †2013) only very few people know this man, originally from Bratislava. It is thanks to his abilities and years of work that today the world can enjoy the beautiful exposition of the Gugenheim museum in New york which “if it were not for Messer, Peggy would have most probably donated to Tate Modern in London”.

Thomas Messer (*1920 – May 15, †2013) stammte auch aus Bratislava, sein Name ist jedoch kaum bekannt. Rubberneck (Panská and Sedlárska ulica/street) – legend has it the Rubberneck was a manual worker who instead of his work, preferred to look under women’s skirts. Who touches him is definitely coming back to Bratislava.

The narrowest house in Central Europe (Michal-ská ulica/street) – is located in front of St. Michael’s Tower and its facade, which is 130 cm wide, fills the gap which arose from the dismantling of the city walls.

Cardinal’s hat (Primaciálne námestie / Primatial square) – at the top of the tympanu of the Primatial palace sits a cardinal’s hat of 180cm in diameter, which weighs 150 kg.

This dominant of the city has had its stable location for several centuries. It was at the peak of its fame during the reign of Maria Theresa. The crown tower which is the only tower that does not stand on the castle walls but is based in the ground is the only part of the originally Roman castle preserved to this day.

Die Dominante der Stadt steht bereits einige Jahrhun-derte an ihrem Platz. Ihren Höhepunkt erlebte sie während der Herrschaft Maria Theresias. The oldest sacral building preserved to this day in Bratislava served as a meeting place and during coronation festivities, the newly crowned king would knight selected noblemen to Knights of the Golden Spur here. The original tower of the church is now placed in the Janko Kráľ park in Petrzalka.

Historically this used to be the seat of the order of St. Claire, however today it is a concert hall. A knight who had fallen in love with one of the nuns of the St. Claire order built a five walled tower in order to get the hand of his loved one from her superioress. However, during the construction works on the tower, she sent her novice someplace else.

Einst Sitz des Klarissenordens, zurzeit dient die Kir-che als Konzertsaal. Ein Ritter, der in eine Klarissin ver-liebt war, ließ einen fünfeckigen Turm zubauen, um so um die Hand seiner Auserwählten bei der Mutter Oberin anzuhalten. Diese schickte die Novizin jedoch während--dessen woanders hin.


The palace of count Grassalkovich who was an advisor to Maria Theresa is currently used as the seat of the President of the Slovak republic. The Grassalkovich garden with the statue of Maria Theresa, the Fountain of the youth and the Alley of Presidents is opened to the public.

St. Michael’s Gate is the only original gate of the city preserved to this day. At the top of the tower, at 51meters, you will see a statue of Archangel Michael killing a dragon.

The Dome was at the peak of its historical importance during the era when 10 Hungarian kings, one queen and 8 royal wives were crowned here. In commemoration of this era, on top of the 85 meters tall tower of the church is a copy of the Hungarian Royal crown.

Die wichtigste Epoche in der Geschichte der Ka-thedrale waren die Krönungsjahre, in denen 10 ungaris-che Könige, 1 Königin und 8 Königsgattinen gekrönt wurden. Zur Erinnerung an diese Zeit befindet sich auf der 85 m hohen Turmspitze der Kirche eine Kopie der ungarischen Königskrone.

The former house of the town’s reeve is today a complex of buildings where the oldest museum of Bratislava, mapping the history of the town and its feudal judiciary, is seated.

The construction of this neo-renaissance building followed the plans of Viennese architects. In front of the building is Ganymede’s fountain, one of the most beautiful fountains in Bratislava.

This church, characteristic for its blue coloured walls is a good example of the Art Deco style. According to certain documents, St. Elizabeth, the patroness of the church, was born at the Bratislava castle.

The palace houses the following permanent exhibitions - Celts in Bratislava; gothic panel paintings and sculptures; Central European painting and 19th sculpture; and painting and sculpture in Slovakia 1918 -1948. In 2004, the work “passage” by Matej Krén was installed in the Pálffy Palace. The opportunity to walk through this work is a unique experience.

This restaurant was designed to be a treat not only for one’s taste buds but also for the eyes. The window-panes are duplicates of the Alexy window-panes in

For centuries, humble estates and farms had been shaping the traditional Slovak cuisine. The basis of a local menu is a soup of countless varieties. The traditional “kapustnica” – cabbage soup, or “fazuľovica” – bean soup always include a rich portion of smoked pork, which is another “must” of the local cuisine. Slovaks used to balance out the meat dominance on their plates with a broad variety of cereals and pulses. This is where the traditional pastes and polenta come from. The fact that the Slovak kitchen is closely connected with nature is reflected in the traditional usage of herbs as natural spices, the knowledge of mushrooms and the rich usage of various game specialties. The Danube region enriched the cuisine with fish. Bratislava has always been a crossroad of international trade and cultures which is why the traditional Slovak cuisine here is very variable. The success with which the American potato was adopted on our territory is unprecedented. It took the place of many ingredients in the traditional kitchen and today dominates in our traditional dishes. In the various forms of the “bryndzove halusky” or “bryndzove pirohy” which are sheep cheese dumplings and small sheep cheese pies, potatoes delicately blend with sheep cheese. For instance, the potato pancake or hash brown is a typical very humble yet very filling dish.

Die slowakische Küche hat sich über Jahrhunderte hinweg in bescheidenen Bauernhäusern und bäuerlicher Tra-dition entwickelt. Zum einheimischen Menü gehören in erster Linie verschiedenste Arten von Suppen. Die traditio-nelle Kraut- oder Bohnensuppe ist immer reich an geräuchertem Schweinefleisch, das die Grundlage der einheimis-chen Gastronomie bildet. Das Fleisch haben die Slowaken mit Getreide und Hülsenfrüchten ausgeglichen, wovon die traditionellen Breie und Polentas ausgehen. Die Verbundenheit zur Natur spiegelt sich in der traditionellen Ver-wendung von Kräutern als Naturgewürzen, Kenntnis von Pilzen und zahlreichen Wildspezialitäten wieder. Der Fis-chfang hat die Donauregion gastronomisch bereichert. Bratislava war seit je die Kreuzung für internationalen Han-del und Kulturen, deshalb zeichnet sich hier die traditionelle Küche durch eine größere Vielfalt aus. Die amerikanische Kartoffel hat sich auf unserem Gebiet stark durchgesetzt und ist auf verschiedene Arten verarbeitet in der traditio-nellen Küche vorzufinden. Heute hat sie in unseren Nationalgerichten eine Vorrangstellung, wo Sie eine köstliche Verbindung mit dem Schafskäse in seinen verschiedenen Formen in Brimsennockerln oder Teigtaschen hervorzau-bert. Ein typisch bescheidenes, aber durchaus sättigendes Gericht ist zum Beispiel der Kartoffelpuffer oder „lokša“.

The museum has its seat at the Červený Kameň (Red Stone) castle; a castle from the 13th which is one of the most visited castles in Slovakia and is a national cultural monument. The castle is a rarity in the region of Central Europe for its architectonic quality and its permanent exposition of furniture, historical weapons, picture gallery and pharmacy. In the nearby park, you will find the seat of a falconry club with the biggest collection of birds of prey in Slovakia.

The exhibition presents unique collections of beehives from the 17th century, consisting of relief and figural beehives, beekeeping tools from various periods of Slovak apiculture. Slnecne jazeraWater area Slnecne jazera near Senec city belong to one of the most popular and most visited summer recreational areas in Slovakia. Whole water area Slnecne jazera is situated on the eastern part of Senec city. The water extent is more than 100 ha, with length 2200m and average width 400m. Slnecne jazera water area is governed by Senec tourism administration o�ce s.r.o. This recreational area is situated on the main highway Bratislava – Trnava, approxi-mately 25km from Bratislava (roads: E571, 61 or highway D1). Due to area size and for better orientation, the area is divided into south and north part.

Senec City: Senec city is situated in Central-european region. It lies in southwest of Slovakia – in Podunajska nizina, on the border between Podunajska rovina and Podunajska pahorkatina. The distance from Austrian border (Kitsee) is 27km and distance from Hungarian border (Rajka) is 28km. The closest European metropolis are Wien (90km) Budapest (230km) and Prague (350km). Lies on north-east from Bratislava, in 25km distance in altitude 126m. Geographical coordinates of Senec city centre are: longitude 17° 24’ and latitude 48° 13’. City lies on D1 highway from Bratislava to Zilina and important European railway connection Praha-Bratislava-Balkan/Orient. According to territorial governance, Senec lies in eastern part of Bratislavsky kraj.
