About usBrasfield & Gorrie is one of the largest

privately held construction firms in the nation.

Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, our

company is the successor to the Thomas C.

Brasfield Company, a general contractor operating

as a sole proprietor from 1921. Miller Gorrie

purchased the company’s construction assets in

1964 and changed the name to Brasfield & Gorrie

in 1967.

Initially, the new company continued within the

Thomas C. Brasfield niche of small commercial and

remodeling projects. As profitability increased, the

company shifted its emphasis to larger commercial,

institutional, healthcare, and industrial projects,

and in 1984, Brasfield & Gorrie opened full-

service offices in Atlanta and Orlando. In 1998,

we opened offices in Raleigh and Nashville to

better serve our clients in those areas, and we

continued our forward momentum by opening

offices in Jacksonville in 2006, Dallas in 2010, and

Columbus, Georgia, in 2012.

Brasfield & Gorrie’s success is the result of

a strong work ethic and industry knowledge

combined with innovation and collaboration. In

the first full year after Miller Gorrie purchased the

assets of the Thomas C. Brasfield Company, our

annual revenue was less than $1 million. Today,

our annual revenue is more than $2 billion, and

we are a nationally respected general contractor

and the builder of the world’s largest aquarium,

the Georgia Aquarium, which is a model of project

efficiency, superior quality, and exceptional service

from start to finish. Frequently recognized for

excellence in our industry, we build more than

exceptional buildings: we build relationships.

Power ExperienceOur goal is always to have a thorough understanding

of all intended functions and the impact of each power

project. Constructing a power project involves diligent

and detailed planning to minimize disruption during

construction as these types of projects often provide

services to entire communities. Once completed,

these projects are used by masses of people, therefore

the stringent owner requirements coupled with our

ability to effectively manage the project, ensure a

high quality end product that benefits the community.

Our power experience includes a wide range of

project types such as heavy civil, concrete, material

handling/process systems, water treatment, sitework,

hydropower and industrial projects.

BRASFIELD & GORRIE CAPABILITIES AND SERVICES:

Our ability to provide in-house services gives us superior control

over cost, schedule, quality and safety. Self-performance on a

project can range from 5 to 95 percent, depending on the type of

construction. On average, we self-perform about 25 percent of

the work on our projects. By self-performing work that many of

our competitors must subcontract, we are able to eliminate an

additional markup, thereby reducing project costs for the owner.

Brasfield & Gorrie was the engineering/procurement/

construction (EPC) contractor and was tasked with

designing, furnishing, installing and testing of a

limestone unloading, handling, and reclaim system for

Georgia Power’s Plant Wansley.

This system unloads and stocks-out limestone

received by rail, then reclaims and conveys the

limestone to two on-site silos. The unloading hopper

has “hot rails” for automatic bottom-discharge rail

car gate operation, aided by a side car shaker. A wet

dust extractor control system is used to maintain

dust control. Brasfield & Gorrie self-performed

Brasfield & Gorrie was selected as the general contractor for the heavy haul road for Plant Vogtle’s ISFSI project. The work involves the construction of a reinforced concrete haul road, that is 24 feet wide and 24 inches thick with an 8-inch sub base, and an ISFSI pad designed to hold 20 spent fuel canisters. The work also included the installation of a below-ground cask transfer facility. The haul road will extend from the existing cask load facility to the new cask storage area. The work is located both inside and outside the existing protected area (PA). The haul road must have the capacity to withstand loads of over 300 tons, the combined weight of the crawler, canister, and protective overpack. Additional work includes excavation, storm sewer drainage and culverts, sanitary sewer relocation, sediment and erosion control, railroad spur installation, and roadway lighting.

COAL EMISSIONS REDUCTION TECHNOLOGY (CERT) PROJECTS MULTIPLE LOCATIONS

Brasfield & Gorrie performed extensive powerhouse

modifications at Georgia Power Company’s Goat

speed increasers. This work included setting new

hydraulic oil, instrument air, and cooling water

systems.

The CERT projects were design/build projects consisting of eleven similar projects spread across eight states for five different power

providers. The system that was installed consisted of a combination of silos and tanks supported by structural steel platforms on a

combination of shallow & deep foundations. The tanks contained a mixture of dry and wet agents that were to be distributed onto the

coal prior to entering the plant to reduce emissions. These projects had many challenges with the most difficult issues to overcome being

related to design data compilation, project schedule, and the labor/material logistics associated with working in 8 different states at the

same time. In the end, the project team was able to complete both the design and installation of all eleven projects over a six month

period; nearly one month ahead of the overall required project completion date.

The railroad bridge is a 382-foot main lift span that rises 80 feet to allow intercoastal waterway traffic on the Galveston Bay to pass under the BNSF Railroad. The project also included an 800-foot long tunnel under the bay to carry new waterlines. All of the bridge work, including electrical work is being self-performed by Brasfield & Gorrie/Cianbro joint venture.

One of the unique challenges of the project is that the main span was built on barges at the port and then floated in to replace the old bridge. This float-out/float-in phase of the lift span had to be completed within a 72-hour marine channel shutdown, with only a 12-hour window to close the bridge from rail traffic.
