BATTLE ROYALBY KOUSHUN TAKAMI

BRThe 1999 novel written by Koushun Takami is a disturbing story of an authoritarian society, tired of the out of control children breaking all the rules. So the adults pass MERA. The Millinial Educational Reform Act in which a choosen group of middle school students will be unexpectedly shipped to a remote island for the amusment of adults, to kill each other leaving only 1 survivor that wins.

41 STUDENTS ARE GIVEN WATER FOOD AND A WEAPON RANDOMLY FROM MACHINE GUNS TO A PAPER FAN. THEY ARE FORCED ONE BY ONE INTO THE ISLAND AND ARE GIVEN INSTRUCTION TO STAY OUT OF CERTAIN AREA AT CERTAIN TIMES WHILE KILLING EACH OTHER. SCARED AND CONFUSED MOST OF THE STUDENTS BEGIN RIGHT AWAY. BUT SOME REFUSE…..

KITANO- IS THE TEACHER THAT WAS ATTACKED BY ONE OF THE STUDENTS 3 YEARS A GO AND ENDS UP BEING THE FACILITATOR OF THE EVENT. HE KILLS, HE IS HATED BUT HE ALSO HAS A STRANGE CURIOSITY WITH ONE OF THE STUDENTS WHO REMINDS HIM OF HIS DAUGHTER AND SECRETLY WANTS TO SEE HER WIN.

THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM…

The out of control student who are gaining in population are making life for adults more and more difficult.

The solution to the problem is a vote from the adult that they have them kill each other off. Then the adults in authority don’t have to do it either.

THE HEROS…..

Shuya Nanahara, Noriko Nakagawa and Shogo Kawada have choosen to go against the rules as a classic dystopian hero does. Shuya and Noriko have a connection and Shuya protects Noriko in memory of his friend killed by Kitano. The two find the previous winner of BR, Shogo, who desperately tries to beat the adults at this game they have created by sabotaging the collars that explode their heads and fake the deaths of his friends to get to Kitano.

ALTHOUGH SHOGO IS WOUNDED HE FOUND TRUE FRIENDS AND HELPS THE ESCAPE THE ISLAND BEFORE HE DIES FROM HIS INJURIES. SHUYA AND NORIKO GET OFF THE ISLAND AND ARE HIDING FUGITIVES TOGETHER.

BATTLE ROYALE• This dystopian novel and book is a classic authoritairian society

with the bad adults and decision makers forcing their power over the students. The student kill because they are forced to for survival but you have your classic heros that defy the rules and break free from the psychotic society. It doesn’t appear to be set in a futuristc set but something that could easily happen in our society today. There are many countries that have much control of their people. Children are very free minded these days and for those who get out of hand their could possible be major consequences in order to control the safety of others.
