Research into Typography Artist 50 cent has been part of films, games and music videos. The 50 cent brand can be found in all of his forms of media with a distinctive typography that forms his brand identity. Their are variations of the distinct logo 50 cent but all are shown in the images taken from his music video (top left), his album cover (bottom right) and his website (top right)

Magazine AdvertsA more traditional form of advertising for promoting a new album is an magazine advert. The purpose of a magazine advert is to sell a set product. In order to do this it has to grab the consumers attention. A selection of methods is used to do this. Quotations taken from reviews from different sections of the press are generally used to show the positive opinions of others. These usually include music press, the general press and other successful artists. The other main device used for catching some one's eye is the image or images used. These range from the brightest most colourful designs representing artists such as Mika, to darker yet still bold images from Rhianna. Both are successful in their own way as the colours used have strong representations to the artists being advertised and both will attract attention from the different audience that it seeks.A magazine advert will include different sections of information, although not all adverts use all necessary fields they generally take to mixing and matching. However the essentials that are included in most are as follows:The name of the artist/artistsName of the albumDate of releaseWithout these three essential fields the advert there may be some confusion to the consumer of what exactly is being advertised. Magazine adverts also tend to include information on the band or artists website, whether it be the official website or the bands social networking link.

Examples of Magazine AdvertsArtist Ellie Goulding album titled 'lights' features a close-up star image motif . The house colours of gold and black are similar to her single 'Starry eyed'.This house colour appears to have influences from the artwork of Gustav Klimt. Klimt often used intricate gold patterns such as the circles featured on the c.d cover.

The gold typeface is also the same as her single release emphasizing the E and G to have similar shapes.

Similar Brand Identity to The Shabby Tinkerz

Artists Mumford and Sons have a similar styling to the band 'The shabby Tinkerz'

however, not the same genre as the band. I have previously analyzed their website

and their album cover but it is their brand image that I will focus on.

Marketing Strategies slide 1A more traditional form of advertising for promoting a new album is an magazine advert. Magazine NME are well established featuring various artists often of a certain genre characteristic of rock/alternative. Therefore the magazine target audiences would not want to see artists from a genre outside such as Britney spears. The artist featured right is Indie artist Laura Marling. Her music is described as unique and original which suits the unconventional cover. The artist is not dressed glamorously but appears natural in everyday plain clothes. This suggests the focus is more on her music and words rather than selling her music through her star image motif like artist Cheryl Cole does. This seems as though she has just been caught naturally posed. The colours are grey and blue which usually connotates sadness. NME house colours are red and black. Laura is featured with a cigarette and a cup of tea.

Marketing Strategies 2A very different genre of music from Laura Marling is commercial pop band ‘The Saturdays’. The photo taken from a photo shoot for a promiscuous magazine FHM features the band dressed glamorously using voyeurism to sell their music.

Intertextuality in Music Videos

• Intertextuality refers to incorporating other existing texts to spark recognition. This creates a brand as the connotations could be high fashion brands such as Burberry which would target wealthy audiences. John Stewart claims the most popular are cinema, art, fashion and photography. Music videos often draw upon cinema since most music video directors progress to directing films. An example of television being referenced can be found in artists ‘Beastie boys’ video which is a spoof of undercover American show Sabotage.

Typography used in Music videosRhianna is an artist I have already analysed colourisation and album cover. The album cover analysed also shows a link between the logo of the R and its recurrence in her music videos and single covers. The house colours of black and white are also used in her videos showing colourisation.

Colourisation with GoodwinThis still frame shows how Goodwins theory of visuals matching lyrics are applied using colourisation.

Page 13: Brand Identity

Colourisation in Music Videos• I have recently noticed with the

release of Rihanna's new songs for her new album release her new star image of red hair is applied by changing the colourisation in her two single releases and album cover . This creates a brand identity that the artist can use on album covers and magazine adverts creating 'house colours'.

......In another single the red lighting again appears as fire in the climax to the song. The fire connotating destruction is contrasted with it being red connotating lust. The artist wears the striking outfit throughout and is central to most of the shots.
