Brand DJ. 1978. Captive propagation at the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa. Breeding endangered species in captivity 20:107-112. Keywords: 1Afr/Acinonyx jubatus/breeding/captive breeding/cheetah/research/zoo Abstract: Until some 20 years ago it was easy and inexpensive in South Africa to obtain indigenous wild animals for exhibition purposes. The National Zoological Gardens began a modernization. Number of species was reduced and larger enclosures provided for exhibition and for the accommodation of breeding groups. Under the new conditions a good number of species started to multiply satisfactorily. The first project was the establishment of a Cheetah Breeding and Research Center. It has often been emphasized that the zoos of the world are among the consumers of wildlife and that this can impose a drain upon the wild populations of certain species. The main object and ultimate goal in the establishment of these projects is the breeding of animals to meet not only our own demands but also those of other zoos and eventually perhaps to resettle species in areas of their natural habitat from which they have disappeared. Apart from their function as recreational and breeding centers, parks of this nature also offer unique possibilities in the fields of education and research.
