GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Welcome our new members to

the AAUW B-C branch.

HOSPITALITY

Summer Picnic is just around the corner—July 14—and offers a great opportunity: stop by the Hospitality Table and sign up to bring refreshments to a branch meeting during 2016–17. Hospitality provides refreshments at the October, November, January, February, March, and April meetings and also organizes the Summer Picnic. Each month will have a coordinating hostess to guide the process. Eight to ten volunteers bring food, set up, and clean up. Just look for the new Hospitality Co-Directors, Pat White and Becky Ragan. They will be at the picnic and also at branch meetings with signup sheets until all slots are full. Hope to see you at the Summer Picnic.

CELEBRATE THE VOTE FESTIVAL

Parade....Music....Speakers

On Saturday, September 3, 2016, Missouri women will recreate an event staged by 3000 women one hundred years ago in St. Louis. On a sweltering day, suffragists lined the street where delegates to the Democratic convention would walk to re-nominate Woodrow Wilson. Their sole demand was a plank in the party platform in support of women’s suffrage–they accomplished their goal. In 2016, AAUW and other civic organizations want 3000 women to congregate in honor of our right to vote. AAUW is a named event sponsor, but as a non-profit organization, AAUW's financial guidelines do not permit raising money for other organizations. We would like to raise $1000 for Celebrate the Vote. A donation in any amount will be appreciated. We hope that individual AAUW members will donate as they did for the installation of the bust of Virginia Minor in the Missouri state capitol. Talk to Pat Shores to learn how you can participate. Facebook.com/CelebratethevoteFestival/

PUBLIC POLICY

Human Trafficking The first year of our Ballwin-Chesterfield Community Action Grant, Breaking the Chains of Human Trafficking, has ended. We have exceeded every goal we set. Barbara Butchart, Carol Derington, Sr. Esther Hogan, Sr. Ruth Kertz, Shima Rostami, and Pat Shores shared the progress of the grant at the AAUW Ten State Regional Conference in Kansas City, Kansas. Heartfelt thanks to the members of B-C who supported the grant events every step of the way. Next year will be even bigger and better. Missouri Legislator Contacts B-C members made weekly contacts with their legislators to encourage the passage of a pay equity bill. Unfortunately, that did not happen this year, but we will try again next session. We were successful in encouraging our representatives to support a human trafficking bill that passed and will protect young people from sexual predators. Come join our committee and be a part of next year’s exciting Public Policy program. ~Pat Shores & Barb Butchart, Public Policy Co-Directors EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FUND

The EOF committee will be meeting during the summer to plan for the coming year. The 2015–16 year has been a very successful time for us. We were able to support five local scholarships and one NCCWSL workshop attendee. We met our fellowship awardee and heard her interesting talk and rejoiced in the community action grant awarded to Ballwin-Chesterfield. Our members worked hard on the bean soup sale, the Panera Bread card sale, Canasta, and the very successful book sale. These projects, with all the other Dollars for Scholars events, support this very worthwhile work. A special thanks to Linda Roberson, our EOF co-director for the past three years. Linda will be using her special talents on other needs of the branch. We welcome Vickie Jany who will begin as co-director in July. Thanks to both of these super members. We look forward to a great 2016–17. ~ Marian Bauer & Linda Roberson, EOF Co-Directors

LEGAL ADVOCACY FUND

Hobby Lobby Returns to the Lower Court. The LAF committee follows the progress of this case. (information from Mollie Lam, AAUW LAF senior manager). The perils of an eight-member Supreme Court were thrown into sharp relief this month when the court sent Zubik v. Burwell back to the circuit courts. In March, the Supreme Court heard arguments in Zubik, a set of consolidated cases that pose a looming threat to women’s access to reproductive health care. Following on the heels of 2014’s disappointing Burwell v. Hobby Lobby decision, some religiously affiliated nonprofit organizations filed suit objecting to contraceptive coverage requirements under the Affordable Care Act. Although this act included an AAUW-supported accommodation for religiously affiliated nonprofits that objected to offering contraceptive care on religious grounds, some nonprofits claimed that the accommodation does not go far enough. Those nonprofits are the plaintiffs in Zubik............................................................. Most, but not all, circuit courts had ruled that the accommodation went far enough to protect the plaintiffs’ religious liberty while still ensuring women’s access to contraception. Rather than resolve the circuit split or make a final decision, the Supreme Court sent all the cases back to the circuit courts and ordered the parties to consider alternatives that could ensure coverage while accommodating the challengers’ arguments. While this is tentative good news for reproductive rights supporters, it does not fully resolve the issue. The Supreme Court will likely have to hear the cases again after a new justice is appointed. Sign the AAUW petition now to urge the U.S. Senate to fulfill its constitutional obligation to consider President Barack Obama’s nominee. ~ Julia Triplett, LAF Director

AAUW MO IMPACT GRANT Karen Francis and Pat Shores have submitted a grant application for an AAUW $1000 Impact Grant. If awarded the grant, each Missouri branch will be expected to do one Get Out the Vote activity and one Pay Equity activity next year. Keep your fingers crossed for this national support for our state efforts. ~ Karen Francis and Pat Shores, AAUW MO Public Policy Co-Chairs

HELP US GIVE THE NATIONAL BLUES MUSEUM

A BLUESY WELCOME TO ST. LOUIS

Friday, September 23 Tour 10 a.m. Carpool from Trinity, 9:15 a.m.

The New York Times, Smithsonian, and CNN listed the new National Blues Museum as one of the “can’t miss” stops for 2016. Enjoy a guided tour of the legendary music scene and learn how the blues influenced Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and even hip hop. Have fun with the interactive exhibits (one where you can actually join a jug band and play your own instrument and another where you can write your own blues tune). Blues musician Bobby Rush says, “The museum will be great for St. Louis and will get ahold of the real deal on where the blues comes from and where it is going.” Enjoy lunch, on your own, across the street at The Kitchen Sink. Driving directions to the museum at 615 Washington Avenue, St. Louis, 63101 will be available for drivers, who may park for $1/hour in a garage a short block away.

COST: $24 Make a $24 check payable to AAUW Ballwin-Chesterfield by September 16. ($14 tour and $10 DFS contribution) Contact Marian Bauer ([email protected]) or Pat Shores ([email protected]) for more information.

Did You Know . . .?

Susan Fenwick’s photograph, Japanese Garden Drum Bridge, was one of six entries featured on AAUW notecards sent to you early this summer as winners in the eighth annual AAUW Art Contest. Over 200 submissions were judged in the contest from member artists all over the country. Susan volunteers at the MO Botanical Garden and enjoys pursuing her hobby of photography there. She serves as Secretary/Archivist for our Ballwin-Chesterfield Branch. (Photo from Missouri in Motion.)
