Caledon Public Library’s Life in the Past Lane: Commemorating 150 Years of History and Heritage @ CPL will be the primary theme of many of our regular and special programs throughout 2017. We plan to offer unique, innovative and informational programs that build both awareness and excitement around the theme of Canada 150. From visits by Canadian authors, to a heritage trivia night; from photography, poetry and writing contests for all ages to a Young Reels Film Festival for teens; from art exhibits and programs with a strong emphasis on Canadian art and artisans to cooking workshops to highlighting Canadian diversity through food we want to ignite Caledon in celebration. We hope the community is as excited about this as we are, and that you’ll help us execute this theme with great enthusiasm to give our beautiful country the birthday celebration it deserves!

How To Build Your Story with Brian Henry Plotting Novels and Writing Short Stories Saturday, February 11 | AB Branch | 10 am - 3:30 pm $55 paid in advance by mail or person $59 paid at door A pizza lunch is included in the cost of this workshop. This workshop will show you how writers plot a novel and will give you the best tips on writing short stories. We’ll also look at where to get your stories published and how to win contests. Best yet, you’ll see how to apply the story-building techniques you’ve learned to your own writing. Workshop leader Brian Henry has been a book editor and creative writing instructor for more than 25 years. He publishes QuickBrownFox, Canada’s most popular blog for writers, teaches creative writing at Ryerson University and has led workshops all over North America. His proudest boast, however, is that he has helped many of his students get their first book published and launch their careers as authors.

Every year, CPL invites youth in high school to create short films Using drama, documentary, animation or any other genre. Prizes are awarded in a variety of categories. The Prison Book Club, which relates Ann’s experiences as a

volunteer prison book club organizer for inmates at the Collins Bay

and Beavercreek Institutions in Ontario. The Prison Book Club

recently won the prestigious 2016 Edna Staebler Award for

Creative Nonfiction, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the

lives of incarcerated men, as well as the transformative and

connective power of literature. Please join us for a fascinating

evening with Ann.

TECHY TEENS TO THE RESCUE All Ages

Caledon Public Library is hosting a contest for the month of January at all seven branches. Patrons can nominate their favourite adult book from 2016 and we will be compiling our own “CPL Patron Picks 2016” best books list, based on your submissions. Nominations can be made by paper ballot at any branch or electronically from our website. Then you can see what your friends, neighbours and colleagues enjoyed reading last year and maybe discover your own new favourite. As an added bonus, a random draw will be made from all nominations and the winner will receive copies of 2 books by Canadian authors Amy Stuart, Still Mine and Ann Walmsley The Prison Book Club. Both of these best-selling authors will be visiting Caledon Public Library in 2017. See page 3 for more information about these author events.

Children's Short Story (2 age categories), Adult Poetry, Young Adult Poetry, Photography (3 categories) and Young Reels.
