We’re very proud of your knowledge, experience and talents. The skills that many of you find easy and familiar, such as knitting, woodwork, baking or gardening, could become a valuable new hobby or trade for someone else. That’s why we’re creating a new Under 60’s category in this year’s Bramley Challenge, supported by the 21 Again Project; and inviting the wider community to come and see the entries and take part in demonstrations. We think that, especially in a time of austerity, it’s important to bring the community together to learn from each other and make new friendships, for generations to appreciate each other’s perspectives. It's why we're

holding a special film matinee on Saturday 14 November to screen a selection of short films made by older filmmakers in the city – exploring the world through their eyes. It's why local primary school children take part in the weekly Games Afternoon, and why we tell people how proud we are of the Singing Group, Craft Club, Men's Group, Tea Dancers… It's why when a group of local teenagers came to find out about BEA recently and we told them about you, they left feeling inspired and said that they would like more opportunities to swap skills with the BEA community. So, here’s to a busy Autumn full of opportunities to build a better community together.

Preparing for a stay in hospital

Any stay in hospital, even if planned, can be difficult, both for you and for people close to you. If you have the opportunity to do so, it will really help to prepare; both for being there and for coming home.

····························································································

This will be particularly important if you live on your own. Will you need a period of recovery when you come home? It may help you to set up your space for when you get back. For example, make sure the things you need regularly - your phone, your tv remote, painkillers perhaps, will be close to hand. Can you ask a friend or relative to stay with you or visit you when you return?

····························································································

You may find that you have lost some confidence in living in your own home. There may be things that you cannot do while you recover, both physically and mentally. Think about stocking up on drinks and foods that are easy to prepare such as frozen ready-meals.

····························································································

If you’ve had a stay in hospital and are ready to be discharged, getting extra support might help to boost your recovery, re-build your confidence, and so give you a better chance of living safely and independently at home again. You may be offered services from NHS staff such as physiotherapists or occupational therapists, along with social care support if you need it.

····························································································

‘Intermediate care’ can last for up to six weeks and is provided free. You can receive it at home, in a day hospital, community hospital or care home. The services offered may include nursing or personal care at home or physiotherapy at a day hospital. When your intermediate care finishes, you should have an assessment to see whether you need any ongoing care or health services.

Help and support

There are a number of sources of very good information and support for older people facing a stay in hospital, including:

Age UK Leeds Hospital to Home Phone 0113 206 5052 For people who have had a short stay in St James's Hospital to help with discharge, get settled in at home and prevent re-admission. Support includes: getting to know your needs in hospital; helping you return home; short term support for a couple of visits; help with shopping; taking you to appointments.

British Red Cross Hospital to Home Support Phone 0113 2015 253 Helps people after a short stay in hospital. Prevents unnecessary hospital admissions by providing extra support and care at home.

Meet the Vicar

Rev. Paul Crabb, Priest in Charge of Bramley

“You have the care of everyone who lives in the parish, including different kinds of Christians, people of different faiths and of no faith”. That’s how Paul Crabb began to explain his role. Born in Halifax, Paul has been in Bramley since February 2014, after being a Deacon, Curate and Vicar for 23 years, all in West Yorkshire. It’s easy to see how, with his warm and open personality, Paul can always be ‘available’ to talk and to listen. That’s why he wears his dog collar when he’s walking around the parish. He is always a Vicar. “I’ve got the time”. He loves the variety and unpredictability of the role; on any day he may be involved in all parts of people’s lives. When asked which part of his role he enjoys most, Paul’s answer, ‘funerals’, surprised! He explained that this is because of

the trust, openness and willingness to share that he experiences with families at this difficult time. Paul finds the occasional ‘culture clash’, between the church and people’s wishes, the most challenging things to deal with, and there are times when he may want to say things but has to be careful about what he says! He represents the church, and also speaks on behalf of people. Paul finds that older people have a refreshing and helpful “longer view of life” in a very wise way, summed up in the phrase “It’ll still be there tomorrow”. They often have really important things to say. Paul likes gardening, which is a reflective time. He used to sing and do amateur dramatics. He also goes running but, as he puts it, “only in my mind!”

Great paint job Jane Dawson, Estate Manager at Rossefield Manor, kindly organised a team of volunteers from Hanover Housing, who spent a day painting our new drop-in at our Stanningley Road office. A big thank you to them all, and to Dulux Paint Centre for giving the drop-in such a beautiful makeover.
