25 YEARSOne Legacy

Founder and owner, Robert Bramble, reflects on his twenty-five year legacy of Bramble, and how it all started.

What do you think Bramble does best?Without question, it’s our hand finishing processes. Our finishes are all hand applied, not sprayed, and often are applied in layers to achieve our more complex finishes. In addition, we are able to customize using any combination of finishes on our furniture.

Looking forward, what’s next for Bramble and for you?I love that Bramble is a family business. Recently, my oldest son Jeremy joined the company and has brought fresh new energy and ideas. I am hopeful that my other three kids will help this legacy live on as well.

My goal is to continue to evolve and improve while taking the company to a whole new level with expanded product categories and unique finishes. As for me, I hope to spend more time focusing on product development, which is my true passion.

Tell us how you got into the furniture business?I don’t think you can get much further from the furniture business than where I started.I grew up on a farm in the Midwest selling produce at roadside stands. As I got older, I wanted to understand why some things worked while others did not from a sales and production standpoint. My love of unique collectibles and antiques pulled me to Taiwan where I worked for a UK lighting company where I learned that a distributor was only as good as its supplier, so I wanted to be a supplier. During that time, I had the chance to visit Indonesia and ended up falling in love with the country and its people.

How Sustainable is your furniture? All Bramble furniture is hand made using legally sanctioned wood from the government. However, we’ve taken the initiative to give back and support our local communities by planting over 1 million trees in deforested areas and restoring them as close as possible to their original state.

What’s been your biggest challenge in the furniture business since getting started? The main challenge has always been building and making the factory productive and efficient as we continue to grow. Manufacturing is difficult especially when every piece is hand made and customizing finishes is something we are proud to offer, so we want to do it well.

Then there are the challenges and variables you just can’t foresee. It may rain so hard and long that the wood doesn’t dry, raw materials don’t get delivered, paint colors change, etc. It keeps you on your toes.

What is the one thing people would be surprised to learn about Bramble? It was started from scratch and that I really knew nothing about the furniture business.

You’ve had numerous accomplishments over the past 25 years, what are you most proud of?Besides my kids? Saving the company. We almost lost everything about 15 years ago. Thanks to the suggestion of my mother, we moved our office to Wisconsin, reduced expenses and things turned around.

Bramble touts that your furniture can be ordered in any finish and any color, is that really true?Well, 99% true… you can’t put a metal finish on the wood.

LONDONWORLD

BORN INENJOYED AROUND THE

ECLECTIONSteven Shell grew up in the era of what is now iconic British fashion, and that influence can be seen in his furniture and accessories. Most of his influences come from his extensive travel throughout Europe and the East, as well as parts of London such as Shoreditch and Kings Road. His look is a bit edgy, “or traditional with a twist” as he likes to call it. “I am proud to offer furniture for the free-thinking individual, someone who knows who they are and what they want in life!”.

In business for close to 25 years, Steven Shell now attracts fans from more than 20 countries around the world. “Our customers love the fact that we’re on the cutting edge of design, yet our styles are also neutral enough to adorn any home” says Steven.

When he’s not at home with his family in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, Steven is jet-setting the world finding inspiration.

Steven’s inspiration is derived from his travels, music, art, fashion and architecture.
