Golf enthusiasts know that all it can take is one missed stroke to lose a game. While skill on the

course is one factor in a great game, the equipment used is

another major contributor to performance. It is essential for golf clubs to perform con-sistently and correctly, which is why many avid players and professionals look to technological advancements in their quest for perfection. Every golf club created is unique to itself. Re-gardless of material manufacture and output, the shaft cannot be perfectly round, straight or stiff throughout its length. SST PURE Shaft Alignment is a technology that analyzes golf shafts after man-ufacture and locates the most stable orientation of any golf shaft to minimize off-line bending and twisting. The system places all of the shafts in a set of clubs into the same orientation for a more consistent game. The technology behind the system is simple

but revolutionary to the golf game. The shaft is fi rst removed from the head and placed in a computer-driven machine. This machine checks for irregularities in straightness,

roundness and stiffness that are inherent to the manufacturing process. Then the

shaft is corrected, or PUREd as the company calls it.

Independent testing on players of all skill levels has established that SST PURE improves impact repeatability on the center of the clubface by up to 51 percent. Clubs that have been PUREd have a softer feel than randomly installed shafts. This technology is frequently relied upon by PGA tour players, some of whom will not even hit a ball until their clubs have gone through the analysis. The process can be performed on existing clubs, new clubs or new shafts -- steel or graphite -- from all major manufacturers. Apart from using technology to improve your golf game, here are some other strategies you can employ.

• Invest in a good set of golf shoes that will pro-vide the right level of traction and comfort.

• Improvements in your golf game will come from plenty of practice on the course and at the driving range. Frequent practice is valuable in lowering your handicap and taking strokes off of your game.

• Improved attitude can also go a long way to-ward a better golf game. Learn from setbacks and don’t get discouraged.

With summer upon us once again, the importance of protecting skin from the sun is a top priority. Anyone spending time in the sun needs to protect themselves with sunscreen. SCF answers the following questions concerning the importance of sunscreen and protecting skin from the sun.

• Q: Why is sunscreen so important?• A: The U.S. government lists ultraviolet radiation from the

sun and tanning machines on its list of known human car-cinogens, or substances capable of causing cancer in living human tissue. UVR can produce DNA damage that leads to mutations in genes and the development of skin cancer. Sunscreens, however, can absorb UVR, acting as a protective barrier from the sun, particularly during the summer, when UV rays are typically at their strongest.

• Q: Does the sun cause skin cancer?• A: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates the

sun has caused 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 65 percent of melanomas.

• Q: Should everyone use sunscreen?• A: Those with darker skin often feel as if they don’t need to

wear sunscreen. While darker-skinned people are not as risk-prone as those with light skin, they develop skin cancer as well. Dyspigmentation, which includes any abnormal increase

or decrease in the production or distribution of skin pigment, is often a greater concern among dark-skinned people than sunburn. Regular sunscreen use can minimize the risk for dyspigmentation.

• Q: Is sunscreen necessary on overcast days?• A: Roughly 70 to 80 percent of the sun’s rays go through

clouds and fog, meaning overcast days can be nearly as dan-gerous to the skin as days when there is not a cloud in the sky.

• Q: Have sunscreens ever been proven to be effective?• A: Research studying the effi cacy of sunscreens has been

conducted across the globe, and strong evidence exists to support the effectiveness of sunscreen. Studies conducted in both the United States and Australia have shown that regular sunscreen use signifi cantly decreases the development of a precancerous skin condition known as actinic keratosis.
