Introduction to
INTRODUCTION
• Zotero works on Windows, Mac, and Linux with MS-Office, OpenOffice, and LibreOffice
• Zotero can import academic references, cite them in your text, and automate your bibliography
• It can also import and “tag” the full text of your documents or other materials, e.g. photos, videos, etc.
• Download it for free from www.zotero.org

• Zotero “standalone”• Zotero “connector” for your browser• Open a Zotero account

STEP 1a: FIND A REFERENCE (#1)
• Using commercial subscription databases • E.g. EBSCOhost and Emerald Insight (through the student
portal)• Find an article you want
STEP 1b: GRAB THE REFERENCE DETAILS
• Click on the title of the article you want• Then go to “tools” on the right hand side and choose “cite”
STEP 1c: CITATION DETAILS
• When the citation style options pop up, go down to the bottom left hand corner
• Choose “export”
STEP 1d: EXPORT MANAGER
• In export manager, leave the first button selected (default)• Click on “save”
STEP 1e: “DELIVERY.RIS”
• A file will download onto your system• Double click on it – “delivery.ris”
STEP 1f: IMPORT INTO ZOTERO
• A dialogue box opens – choose OK• Deselect “new collection” for your 2nd, 3rd files, etc.
STEP 1g: IN COLLECTION
• Your citation will appear inside Zotero• Double click on “delivery” to change its name
STEP 2a: FIND A REFERENCE (#2)
Using publicly accessible sourcesE.g. Google Scholar, Academia.edu, Researchgate.net, Media, YouTube, etc.
STEP 2b: ABSTRACT ONLY OR FULL TEXT
You will find some “abstracts only”
And others will have full text
STEP 2c: CLICK THE ZOTERO BUTTON
STEP 2d: CHECK THE SAVING BOX
It comes up in the bottom right hand corner …
STEP 2e: DO THE SAME FOR MEDIA
STEP 2f: AND ALSO FOR MULTIMEDIA
STEP 3a: WORK IN WORD
• Inside Word, or OpenOffice, or LibreOffice• You will see a new “Zotero” menu option
STEP 3b: ADD CITATION
• Click on “Zotero”• Then click on “Add citation”
STEP 3c: SET PREFERENCES
Only for first time:-• Choose your preference (e.g. APA 6th Edition)• English, etc.
STEP 3d: INSERT CITATION
• In the right place in the text, start typing the first letters of the name of author, title of article, etc.
• Choose the right reference when it pops up
STEP 3e: OR IF YOU CAN’T REMEMBER …
And you can’t remember the specific keywords, then click the little triangle and see the whole list …
STEP 3f: IN-TEXT REFERENCE
• This will insert an “in-text reference” in the style (e.g. APA) of your choice in the right position
STEP 4a: BIBLIOGRAPHY
• Click on “Zotero”• Then choose “Insert Bibliography”
STEP 4b: FINISHED AND PERFECT!
• Zotero adds in your full references• And sorts them into alphabetical order
