“I call myself a cook…a good cook, but just a cook.”

This humble statement can-not hide Joe Baczek’s passion for Dish Café Bistro, the restaurant he owns and operates with his

wife Erica, in Lenox. With a high-energy greeting, Joe immediately began to tell me about the busi-ness that keeps the couple busy seven days a week.

“I really wanted to provide an affordable family restaurant in Lenox that wasn’t just pizza…inexpensive and good is the model we go for…a place my friends and family could go.”

With affordability and fam-ily friendliness in mind, Joe recently began offering the first menu “theme nights” – some-thing he hopes to increase as area residents “keep helping to build the business.” The first of the themes is “Thursday Pasta Night”, a fixed-price selection of specialty pasta dishes, including some dishes that are “bottomless”. He hopes to be able to add an

all-day brunch and a prime rib night to the theme night line-up. The restaurant also serves break-fast all day, and offers what Joe Baczek proudly declares “the best clam chowder you will ever have”. Currently, Joe is transitioning the restaurant from separate lunch and dinner menus, and by the end of February will have a single “all day” menu offering every-thing from lighter selections to “significant lunches of steak or salmon”.

With a total of 28 seats avail-able in the restaurant, the busy summer season in the Berkshires can see a line out of the café’s front door, but Joe and Erica are delighted that many of their

year-round customers join in the wait, and continually support the year-old business. They want to continue to foster a strong con-nection with the “locals”. Born and raised in Lee, Joe has wit-nessed the rapid growth of the area, and he would like to work toward preserving the local charm and friendliness that con-tinues to bring visitors, but not forget the year-round folks who make the region so unique and special.

There is also a special quality to the teamwork between Joe and Erica: “She’s my ‘right-hand man’

you could say…she teaches me how to serve and wait on tables, and I show her how to cook some of our dishes”. With only a limited amount of extra staff, the two must rely on one another to get the job done at the level of quality they want for their guests. The Lee Historical Society will meet Thursday, February 14, at the old courtroom in Lee Town Hall. Richard Cleaver, having 30 years of practicing yoga and med-itation, has formed a group with the purpose of learning, prac-ticing and studying meditation on a regular basis. Meditation is relaxing and healing, bringing balance within the body-mind-spirit relationship.

The S.H.A.P.E. Club of Lee (Self Help Awareness Program for Eating/Exercise) is now located at the new Community Room of the Council on Aging Department, Crossway Village, in Lee. The program, organized by volunteers, began as a non-profit support group for weight loss in 1986 after several mem-bers of a TOPS Club (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) found that

organization was closing the local chapter. Originally meeting at the Lee VNA offices in Lee, the S.H.A.P.E. Club has moved sev-eral times, as the need arose. The current leader, Teresa Bragdon, was referred to the Council on Aging Director after contact-ing the town administrator, and the new location has been both accommodating and invaluable to the support group.

S.H.A.P.E. is simply a “shar-ing” group meeting. Most of the attendees have belonged to one weight program or another, but wish to have the support of weekly weigh-ins without the expense of large weekly dues. S.H.A.P.E. charges $10.00 to join ($5.00 for former members) and only $2.00 per week. However, if the member maintains mini-mum effort and loses just two pounds over the course of four weeks without missing a meet-ing, that same member walks away with his/her original $10.00 back! Although limited to earn-ing a total of $50.00 in one year, you are welcome to attend the meetings at your own free will for support at any time. The idea behind S.H.A.P.E. is support - suggestions, sharing, and car-ing (mixed with a little humor).

While there are no special edu-cational qualifications or degrees earned by the current leader-ship, they stress the guidelines of the USDA recommendations and encourage a healthy eating routine and regular exercise. Subscriptions to the Mayo Clinic and Nutrition Action Newsletters are shared with membership. Recipe exchanges and ideas are also encouraged.

Membership is open to any-one interested, with special discounts to seniors and stu-dents. The meetings are held on Wednesday afternoons, from 4:30 to 5:30. A “Begonia Workshop” will be offered on Saturday, February 23rd from 10 a.m. - noon at the Berkshire Botanical Garden - located at the intersection of Routes 102 & 183 in Stockbridge, MA.

Begonias’ popularity is well deserved. Known for their color-ful foliage, pendulous blooms and lush growth, these plants make rewarding though challenging house plants. The Workshop will include an overview of this beau-tiful genus through slides and liv-ing specimens. Participants will learn cultivation and propagation

techniques, propagating stem and leaf cuttings, and plant a terrar-ium. Printed guidelines will be provided and students will take home a variety of cuttings and their terrarium.

A public meeting to discuss the ways the town of Stockbridge might reduce energy consump-tion and greenhouse gas emis-sions will be held Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. at the Stockbridge Grange (on Church Street, just east of the town waste transfer station).

The meeting will be hosted by the Stockbridge Board of Selectmen and the citizens committee that sponsored the successful motion at the 2007 Annual Town Meeting, where the town officially voted to join the Cities for Climate Protection. Through this program, commu-nities commit to reducing green-house gas emissions by using less energy, increasing recycling and supporting clean energy. To date the town has earned $12,000 for renewable energy projects through its participation in the

Clean Energy Choice Program.“This is a great opportunity for

Stockbridge citizens to address their concerns about climate change and to be engaged in com-munity environmental steward-ship,” said George Shippey, chair-man of the Board of Selectmen.

The meeting will provide a forum for citizens to ask ques-tions, offer suggestions and help initiate a citizens advisory com-mittee. Wendy Penner from the Williamstown COOL (Carbon Dioxide Lowering) Committee will talk about COOL’s experi-ences and accomplishments. Rev. Tom Damrosch, rector of St. Paul‘s Episcopal Church, will facilitate.

The Berkshire Humane Society will be celebrating “National Prevent a Litter Month” during February by distributing spay and neuter voucher-certificates for both cats and dogs. “This is an opportunity to help pet owners who would otherwise be unable to afford this important surgery,” says John Perreault, Executive Director. Eligible pet owners can receive a voucher-certificate worth $60 towards a spay/neu-ter surgery for felines and $75 towards the surgery for canines. Since this program started over 12 years ago, The BHS Spay/Neuter Program has helped over 2,200 families spay or neuter their companion animals. The funds are distributed on a first come basis and have been made available by the Hilton C. Hamm Trust.

In addition to reducing the number of homeless and unwant-ed pets in shelters, Perreault added that “spaying and neuter-ing cats and dogs can also make your animal a more pleasant companion by cutting down on their odor, their scent marking, yowling, restlessness and aggres-sion. The surgery will also keep your companion-animal healthi-er, by reducing the risk of certain infections and several forms of cancer and it also add years to your companion animal’s life.”

Between eight and twelve mil-lion animals are surrendered nationwide to shelters every year. Of that, 70 percent of cats and 60 percent of dogs never find a home due to the pet overpopu-lation problem. The Berkshire Humane Society had over 1,350 pets surrendered at their doors in

2007. “By making sure that all of our shelter adoptees are spayed and neutered and also helping those families who otherwise could not afford this important surgery, BHS hopes to continue to see a decrease in the amount of unwanted pet-births in our community”, noted Perreault. The Berkshire Humane Society would like to increase the odds of their homeless animals being placed in forever loving homes, because fewer unwanted litters are being born and then sur-rendered at our doors. The Berkshire Humane Society has been helping animals and people since 1992 and offers free educational programs for

area school children, a pet-food bank for economically distressed pet owners, and works with The Elizabeth Freeman Center to provide foster care assistance for the pets of women in crisis. The Berkshire Humane Society will be celebrating Adopt-a-Rescued-Rabbit Month by giving away a special Bunny Adoption Kit to each family adopting a rescue rabbit at BHS during February. “Each year thousands of bunnies are relinquished to shelters and rescue organizations when their owners decide they no longer want them,” says Nikki Kellogg, Small Animal caregiver at the Berkshire Humane Society. Kellogg noted that Petfinder.com, the searchable database of home-less pets of all kinds, initiated Adopt-a-Rescued-Rabbit Month to draw attention to the fact that rabbits are the third most likely animal to find themselves need-

ing a new home. “ Most people know that dogs and cats end up homeless, but on any given day there are over 5,000 rabbits avail-able for adoption on Petfinder.com and we have been averaging five to six bunnies per month at our shelter”, added Kellogg. Rabbits make excellent com-panions. They can live eight to ten years and bond closely to their adopters. They are quiet but inquisitive companion animals that can also be trained to use a litter box.
