By Melissa McCaghren Slatonite GM The Slaton Tigerettes had its share of ups and downs as it defeated Denver City 45- 19 Tuesday (Dec. 8) but lost to the Sundown Roughettes 49-35 Friday (Dec. 11). Head Coach Tiffany Potts said the game against the Lady Mustangs was well played. “At Denver City on Tues- day, the girls put together a full game with execution on both ends of the floor. It was one of the best games we have played this year defen- sively,” she said. Top scorers were Mary Jo Parker with 15, Sam Gatica with 12, Andrea Moreno with seven, Payton Potts with four, Natali Soto with three and Ti’Alice Young and Chloe Griffith with two each. “Andrea Moreno had an outstanding week for us step- ping up on the offense end of the floor in both games and just showing tremendous ef- fort and leadership. She av- eraged 8.5 points and 8.5 re- bounds per game last week,” said Potts about both games. “Chloe Griffith had to step up and play significant min- utes throughout the week be- cause of some illness on the team.” The team did struggle some against Sundown as Potts admitted, but she was proud of the team’s fight. “Against Sundown on Fri- day, we got off to a little bit of a slow start in the first half and struggled to score in the second quarter, but made ad- justments at half time of the game and were able to close the gap in the second half,” she said. “ I was proud of the girls for showing grit and never giving up. They con- tinued to hustle and play hard throughout the game.” Top scorers in the game were Soto with 11, Moreno with 10, Parker with seven, Potts with four and Young with three. The team started their Dis- trict Tuesday evening (Dec. 15) against Idalou. Scores will be reported in next week’s edition. Potts said now the games are more important than ever as the girls vie for a playoff spot and even a District title. “Every game is important and we have to start putting together our best perfor- mances,” she said. “It will take everyone working together as a team and doing the little things right as we open District play.” Public Notices Page 8 The Slatonite December 17, 2020 Braeden Gibbs goes for a basket against the Sundown Roughnecks Friday evening (Dec. 11) during Senior Night at home. (Slatonite photo/Melissa McCaghren) Boys basketball returns to action after quarantine, splits games By Melissa McCaghren Slatonite GM The Slaton Tigers Basket- ball team jumped back into ac- tion after a COVID quarantine to split their games over Tues- day and Friday nights (Dec. 8 and 11). The Tigers lost to the Den- ver City Mustangs 61-42 Dec. 8, but pounced back against the Sundown Roughnecks 56- 44 for Senior Night. Head Coach Stacy Godfrey said the team had a rocky start last week when they played the Mustangs. “We had just come off a two week quarantine with one practice. We did not play very well, a lot of mistakes and bad turnovers,” he said. “Defensively we struggle with keeping the ball in front of us and not having good defen- sive ball rotation and help. We pretty much got out hustled on both ends of the court and did not respond.” Top scorers for the game were Hudson Sackett with 20 points, Treven Baker with 12, Braeden Gibbs with six, Camryn Nalley and Evan Lo- pez with two each and Alizae Mendez with one point. They, however, rallied to return Friday evening, when they defeated the Roughnecks, which Godfrey credits to their work over the days between games. “After Tuesday night’s game we really focused on those fundamental things that lead to that Denver City loss. We had two good days of prac- tice and brought a lot of energy into Friday night which lead to the win,” he said. Lead scorers in the game were Baker with 19, Ayden Ramirez with 12, Sackett and Mendez with six each, Gibbs and Nalley with five each and D’Marcus Trotty with two. Now, they focus on the up- coming weeks where District action comes into play. The team played Littlefield Tuesday evening (Dec. 15) at home. Results will be reported in next week’s edition. The team will then start their District game against Ab- ernathy Dec. 22 at home. Currently, Godfrey is work- ing on ways to help the team go further than last year, when they lost a play-in playoff game against the Brownfield Cubs. “We really are now fo- cusing on mental and physical play in practice and in game,” he said. “Without those two things it’s hard to win in any sport.” • • • • • In other area games: • Southland boys 23, Sands 73 during a game Dec. 11 at home. • Roosevelt boys 51, New Deal 55 during a Dec. 11 game at New Deal. • Roosevelt girls 32, New Deal 47 during a Dec. 11 game at New Deal. • Wilson is off until January. Boys basketball returns to action after quarantine, splits games

By Melissa McCaghrenSlatonite GM

The Slaton Tigers Basket-ball team jumped back into ac-tion after a COVID quarantine to split their games over Tues-day and Friday nights (Dec. 8 and 11).

The Tigers lost to the Den-ver City Mustangs 61-42 Dec. 8, but pounced back against the Sundown Roughnecks 56-44 for Senior Night.

Head Coach Stacy Godfrey said the team had a rocky start last week when they played the Mustangs. “We had just come off a two week quarantine with one practice. We did not play very well, a lot of mistakes and bad turnovers,” he said. “Defensively we struggle with

keeping the ball in front of us and not having good defen-sive ball rotation and help. We pretty much got out hustled on both ends of the court and did not respond.”

They, however, rallied to return Friday evening, when they defeated the Roughnecks, which Godfrey credits to their work over the days between games.

“After Tuesday night’s game we really focused on those fundamental things that

Now, they focus on the up-coming weeks where District action comes into play.

The team played Littlefield Tuesday evening (Dec. 15) at home. Results will be reported in next week’s edition.

The team will then start their District game against Ab-ernathy Dec. 22 at home.

Currently, Godfrey is work-

ing on ways to help the team go further than last year, when they lost a play-in playoff game against the Brownfield Cubs. “We really are now fo-cusing on mental and physical play in practice and in game,” he said. “Without those two things it’s hard to win in any sport.”
