Jimmy’s Hall

Based on the true story of Jimmy Gralton, and the dance hall he openedin rural Leitrim at a time when Ireland was on the brink of Civil War. Itwas a place where young people could come to learn, to argue, and todream, but above all to dance and have fun. Jimmy quickly came to theattention of the Church and politicians and they forced him to close thehall.Returning from the U.S. a decade later, Jimmy vows to live the quietlife. However, as he reintegrates into the community and sees thepoverty, boredom, and growing cultural oppression, he decides toreopen the abandoned and empty hall, regardless of the opposition and consequences.

Elwood P. Dowd (James Stewart) is a wealthy drunk who starts havingvisions of a giant rabbit named Harvey. Since its formation at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in 1999,the Callino Quartet has been impressing international audiences andcritics alike with their bold, imaginative and sensitive performances.This concert will feature String Quartets by Haydn and Brahms

together with a performance of Schoenberg’s Quartet No.2 for string quartet and soprano and Mozart’s ExultateJubilate with Irish soprano Ailish Tynan. Fitter Happier VisuAl Art

Thursday 14 May - Thursday 25 JuneThe first exhibition in the curatorial residency isdeveloped in collaboration with a number ofcontemporary visual artists, whose work considersthe human qualities of endurance and resilience.We are looking forward to welcoming a number ofartists to Thurles including Dan Shipsides, RoisínLewis, Debbie Guinnane and Justin McKeown.The exhibition will include the installation of afunctional climbing wall made from repurposed office desks; drawings based on long distance open water swimmingand performance work using familiar gym equipment. In Fitter Happier the artists explore many aspects of human effort, endeavour and exertion, as well as the role ofdaily routines and the social aspects of regular sports training. The overall endurance | resilience programme will include a number public engagement events, which are free toall, so keep an eye out for further information. A second exhibition in Autumn 2015 will feature artists Roddy Buchanan and Fergus Byrne.

A Curated @ Source project exploring Sport + Art The Source is delighted to welcome visual art curator in residence Annette Moloney to the team in 2015. Swimming, boxing and rock climbing are coming to The Source Gallery as part of a yearlong project that examines thelinks between sport and art.Developed by Annette, the visual art programme takes a looks at how and why individuals and communities getinvolved in regular physical training and endurance sports, where human effort can act as a metaphor for survivingtimes of economic or personal uncertainty.During 2015 the gallery programme will work with artists who consider the relationship between human effort andcontemporary art. The artists themselves are involved in physical activity as part of their artistic research, whererunning and climbing are used as forms of research along with drawing and photography.
