www.boxhillhawks.com.au Box Hill Hawks Football Club Ltd – 57th Annual Report 2007 3

President’s ReportThe 2007 year was one of contrast and mixed fortunes for theBox Hill Hawks Football Club. Our Senior team won four-and-a-half games and finished second last on the ladder, our worston-field performance in two decades. Off the field, the Clubgrew all areas of its operations and continued to strengthen itsfinancial position.

In 2006 our Senior team did not participate in the Finals for thefirst time since 1999. Arising from this, the Board conducted afull review of our Football operations at the end of the season. We concluded that we had fallen behind the standard of someA.F.L. / V.F.L. Club alignments and that additional financial andpersonnel resources needed to be directed into our Footballdepartment. During the early years of the revamped V.F.L.competition our Club was very much a pacesetter, however, other Clubs have in recent years copied many aspects of theHawthorn / Box Hill Hawks model and in some cases havemanaged to surpass us due to greater financial capacity.

Coupled with this problem was the youth and inexperience ofHawthorn’s A.F.L. list. Aligned V.F.L. Clubs must be honestwith themselves; their on-field prospects are heavily linked tothe quality of A.F.L. listed players likely to play in the V.F.L. Inrecent years Hawthorn has rebuilt its playing list, aggressivelytrading experienced players past their prime for early draft picksand drafting young talent. The result for the Box Hill Hawkswas that nearly all the Hawthorn listed players who representedus in 2007 had less than ten A.F.L. games under their belt. Atelling statistic during 2007 was that on several occasions weplayed opposing Clubs with more than 1,000 games of A.F.L.experience in their team, more often than not the Box HillHawks team had less than 100 games of A.F.L. experience.

The Board anticipated these issues and determined that theClub needed to recruit some experienced Footballers for 2007to be competitive. A new financial structure was negotiatedwith Hawthorn’s Football Department and the player budgetwas set at 93% of the V.F.L. salary cap, far and away thehighest in my nineteen years involvement with the Club. Theresulting recruiting drive met with limited success; we were ableto entice Nick Smith (ex-Melbourne), Kris Shore (ex-Kangaroos)and Matthew Ball (ex-Hawthorn) to sign with the Box HillHawks. In the case of Matthew Ball, we knew that he wouldonly be able to give us half a season due to overseas studycommitments, but the prospect of him becoming the first BoxHill player in eight years to achieve the milestone of 100 Seniorgames convinced us that signing him was the right thing to do.

Aside from the players that we were able to recruit, we naturallyhoped that further improvement from the existing Box HillHawks listed players would help us to climb the ladder, particularly from those who had carried our Reserves team tothe 2006 Premiership. From my perspective the lack ofdevelopment in many of these players was one of the greatdisappointments of the season. Of the twenty-two players whoplayed in the victorious Grand Final team, only five played morethan five Senior games in 2007 – Marcus Crook, StevenDaniher, Richard Eva, Sam Gibson and Evan Johnson.

Our off-season optimism of an improved season in 2007 wasshattered by a 21-goal defeat in our opening game againstCasey. From then on the Senior team was never able to gainany momentum or consistent winning form. For long periods inmost games we were competitive; a frequent occurrenceunderlining our inexperience was a loss by four or five goalswith the team conceding the winning margin during a ten orfifteen minute lapse.

Victories over the minor Premier (Sandringham) and eventualPremier (Geelong) showed the Box Hill Hawks was not devoidof talent, however, we were only able to manage two wins anda draw from the other sixteen matches. Our lack of midfield runwas underlined by the fact that only one match was won on ourM.C.G. sized home ground; included in our losses at City Ovalwere unforgivable performances against wooden-spoonerTasmania and stand-alone Frankston. Our lack of goal scoringfirepower was a major Achilles heel with our only score duringthe season of more than 100 points being achieved in the dyingminutes of the final game.

Our Reserves team enjoyed another consistent season, reachingthe Finals for a third consecutive year. Unfortunately the teamwas not able to repeat the heroics of 2006, bowing out in a high-standard and high-scoring Elimination Final. I believe that wehave made significant advances in recent years rebuilding thedepth of the Box Hill Hawks list. My concern is how we go aboutenticing the right players to our Club to fill the first six or so placeson our list. These players need to be good enough to be on anA.F.L. list, must be team leaders and role models to the Box HillHawks and Hawthorn listed players and their skills mustcompliment the contingent of A.F.L. listed players that willregularly be part of our Senior team. Clearly recruiting and theway we attract these types of players to the Box Hill Hawks arethe areas that need to be addressed and the Board is fullyfocused on working with the Football department to ensure thatthe best possible outcomes are achieved in these areas.

I congratulate all our trophy winners in 2007, particularly ourClub Champion, Nick Smith, who in his first year with the BoxHill Hawks fully lived up to the reputation that he brought to ourClub earned as an A.F.L. player and V.F.L. Premiership player.I also congratulate and acknowledge the achievement ofMatthew Ball who became the first Box Hill Hawks player in theeight years since the restructuring of the V.F.L. competition toreach the wonderful milestone of 100 Senior games for ourClub. A dual Box Hill Hawks Club Champion and Premiershipplayer, his class and place as one of our all-time elite playerswas underlined when he finished as Runner-Up Club Championthis year despite only playing in the first ten games. All Box HillHawks supporters like to dream that he again play for us afterreturning from overseas, if not, we have all been fortunate towitness one of the great playing careers for our Club.

The Board had not yet completed its review of 2007 whenDamien Christensen advised us that he would not seekreappointment as Senior Coach for a third season. On behalfof all at the Club, I thank Damien for his contribution during adifficult phase of Box Hill’s and Hawthorn’s list development. As I said at our Presentation Night in acknowledging Damien’sefforts, my hope is that his legacy at the Box Hill Hawks is thatmany of the young players he has blooded over the past twoyears will become integral in our Club’s next push to the upperrungs of the V.F.L. ladder. I also thank our Reserves Coach,Kevin Tibaldi, who is departing the Club to take on a seniorcoaching role in the Eastern Football League. Kevin has madea significant contribution to our Club in two stints and, of course,is one of the few people in our long history that can claim thehonour of being a Premiership coach.

I am delighted to confirm that the Club has appointed BarryMitchell as Senior Coach for the 2008 Season. Barry hasimpeccable credentials as V.F.L. coach, having been anassistant coach at Carlton for five years and Senior Coach ofthe Northern Bullants during the past four seasons. We areconfident that he is the right man to lead the Box Hill Hawksback into Finals contention in the very near future.

Off the field, the Club has experienced another most satisfactoryyear. Our fifth consecutive operating profit, with the past twoyears each producing profits of in excess of $30,000, was anoutstanding achievement, particularly when it is considered thatthese results have been achieved without one cent of gamingincome. In recent years we have developed a business modelthat works and full credit must be given to Andrew Pirchan andBob Lyford who are charged with the responsibility of carrying outthe Board’s policies. I have said it in this Report before, but weas a Club are extremely fortunate to have two such competentadministrators looking after our day-to-day operations.

The other outstanding aspect of 2007 was the completion byWhitehorse Council of three more significant projects at Box HillCity Oval of total value well in excess of $1,000,000. A long-term goal was achieved when the Cricket practice wickets wereremoved from the playing arena. Having to play away fromhome for the first three rounds of the season was a very smallprice to pay for such an outstanding improvement to the CityOval playing surface that will provide enormous benefit to ourClub for years to come.

Page 6: Box Hill Hawks Football Club Limited · 2019. 6. 4. · Box Hill Hawks Football Club Ltd – 57th Annual Report 2007 3 President’s Report The 2007 year was one of contrast and mixed

In Bolton Park, Council also installed a filtration plant andunderground water tanks of 1,000,000 Litre capacity to collectstormwater from City Oval buildings and surrounding streets tobe used for watering City Oval. In these days of drought andwater restrictions, this is an outstanding initiative that shouldensure that City Oval is always maintained in a standardbefitting of a State League venue.

Finally, Council upgraded the main spectator entrance atWhitehorse Road with two ticket boxes and expanded carparking, both from a visual and functional consideration amagnificent improvement to our home ground. The “Ron andBarbara Gibbs Entrance” was officially opened by the Mayor,Cr. Koutras, on Anzac Day. The benefits were instantly felt asthe holiday crowd of 3,178 was admitted to the ground quicklyand efficiently without any of the queuing problems experiencedin the past when we have hosted big crowds. Personally, it wasa privilege to take part in the naming ceremony and to join withthe entire local community that thanked Barbara Gibbs and herfamily for their decades of service to our Club, tinged with a littlesadness that Ron Gibbs is no longer with us to receive such arichly deserved honour.

On behalf of all associated with the Box Hill Hawks FootballClub, I sincerely thank Whitehorse Council for their magnificentsupport and for sharing our vision of making Box Hill City Oval aVictorian showpiece for community sport. I am delighted tonote that Council has included a capital works allocationtotalling $600,000 in its 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 budgetstowards the construction of the long-planned new pavilion andclubrooms at City Oval. In conjunction with $700,000 offered byFootball stakeholders (A.F.L. Victoria, Hawthorn Football Cluband the Box Hill Hawks Football Club), there is now a realisticprospect that this project will be funded and completed in theforeseeable future. A momentous achievement was reached inMarch this year when this Club was able to sign an agreementwith the Box Hill Cricket Club for the future development of BoxHill City Oval and on-going sharing arrangements for the venue. We still have some issues to resolve with Council, in particularthe terms of a long-term lease City Oval that would enable therelease of funding from Football stakeholders, but we havecertainly made much progress during the past year.

Another highlight during the year that recognised great service tothe Box Hill Hawks Football Club was the unfurling of the 2006V.F.L. Reserve Grade Premiership pennant by Life Member,Elaine Brown. Elaine has been a great worker for and friend ofthis Club for three decades and rarely, if ever, misses a Box HillHawks match, so it was most appropriate that she was accordedthe honour of unfurling our first ever Reserve Grade flag.

At a strategic level, clearly the most difficult issue for the V.F.L.competition and its member Clubs to deal with during 2007 wasthe A.F.L.’s National Review of Second Tier Football. Aftermeandering along for over eighteen months, a Review Panelwas appointed in February. It quickly became apparent that theterm “National” was a misnomer, the review was really Victorianbased, in particular, of the V.F.L. and T.A.C. Cup competitions.

Fuelled by public comments by coaches of Melbourne-basedA.F.L. Clubs, much of the publicity surrounding the Review wasunhelpful, disrespectful and damaging to the V.F.L. competition.Speculation about the resurrection of the A.F.L. Reservescompetition, the demise of many existing alignments and evensome V.F.L. Clubs created much uncertainty and impactedadversely on the relationship between V.F.L. Clubs and theirmajor stakeholders, in particular, local Councils and sponsors.

Much of the media comment that surrounded the Reviewreminded me of the old truism that if an untruth is repeatedoften enough then everyone will believe it. The view expressedrepeatedly was that Melbourne based A.F.L. Clubs aredisadvantaged compared with their interstate rivals as they losecontrol over their players’ development in the V.F.L. system andthat V.F.L. Clubs are too focused on winning rather than playerdevelopment to the detriment of A.F.L. listed players. In fact,Melbourne based A.F.L. Clubs exert much more influence overthe operation of the V.F.L. competition through alignmentpartnerships than their interstate rivals fielding players in theW.A.F.L. or S.A.N.F.L. could ever dream of.

I challenge anyone to name one A.F.L. listed player who’sdevelopment has been sacrificed by a V.F.L. coach on the altarof four V.F.L. Premiership points. Certainly there is no problemwith the standard of the V.F.L. competition, which has regularlydefeated the W.A.F.L. and S.A.N.F.L in recent years, in 2007thrashing the W.A.F.L. by 20 goals.

The recommendations of the Second Tier Review committee, when released in late-July, included a reaffirmation that regionalState-based leagues are a preferable model to a national A.F.L.Reserves competition and that alignments between A.F.L. andV.F.L. Clubs will remain a key component of the Second Tierstructure. Furthermore, it advocated full integration betweenV.F.L. and T.A.C. Cup Clubs to create strong regional talentpathways and focussed investment to improve regional talentdevelopment structures.

These recommendations are supported by this Club which webelieve, if properly implemented, will further enhance the roleplayed by the V.F.L. competition as part of the talent pathway. However, of great concern are recent indications by the A.F.L.that it wishes to replace the independent Board of A.F.L. Victoriawith an A.F.L.-appointed advisory panel. I believe that Football inthis State must retain its independence and autonomy from thenationally focused A.F.L. if it is to flourish at all levels.

In the tumult that surrounded the A.F.L. Second Tier Review, itsays a lot that the Hawthorn – Box Hill Hawks partnership wasone of the very few alignments about which there was nomedia speculation regarding its demise. I am pleased to saythat, after eight years, the relationship is as strong as ever. Iacknowledge the support of the President of the HawthornFootball Club, Hon. Jeff Kennett, and key staff members; IanRobson (Chief Executive), Mark Evans (General ManagerFootball Operations), Terry Dillon (Chief Operating Officer) andGlenn Thornton (Financial Accountant) who were againavailable to assist our Club wherever possible.

To the businesses that generously support the Box Hill HawksFootball Club, I again express our sincere gratitude. We arefortunate to a number of long-term sponsors who are bothgenerous and enthusiastic about their involvement with thisClub. In particular I acknowledge our Major Sponsor, BudgetCar and Truck Rental. A full listing of all those businesses andorganisations that support our Club is on the inside front coverof this Annual Report.

I thank my fellow Box Hill Hawks Directors for their efforts andcontribution towards the smooth operation of the Club. I saywithout hesitation that the Club’s present administration is thebest that I have been part of during my association with theClub. In particular I acknowledge Jim Conway, now officiallymy Vice-President, for deputising for me on occasions when Iwas unavailable and Peter Rowsthorn who, after contributingstrongly to the Board for the past four years, has advised thathe will be standing down at the end of the year.

To our support staff and volunteers, thank you once again foryour efforts. This Club would not be able to function with outyou. It is interesting to note, from the Staff List on page 2 of thisAnnual Report, that we have considerably more off-field helpersthan players. Each and every one of you do your part to makethe Box Hill Hawks Football Club the professional State LeagueClub that it is today.

Finally, I thank the Box Hill Hawks Football Club’s Membersand Directors for once again granting me the honour of beingPresident of this great Club. It is daunting to know that a sixthyear in 2008 will make me this Club’s third longest servingPresident. While I must be honest with everyone and state thatI really believe that I am closer to the end of my Presidencythan the start, I am happy to serve for another year if that is thewill of our Members and Directors. To all, my best wishes for avery Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year in2008.

General Manager’s ReportThis season panned out as one of the most challenging I havefaced since commencing my role at the Box Hill Hawks FootballClub in December 2001.

Following the disappointment of not qualifying for the V.F.L.Senior Finals Series in 2006 (the first time since 1999),attracting new faces and new sponsors to the Club was alwaysgoing to be a daunting task.

However, the key to the Clubs’ ongoing off-field success hasbeen the solidarity of our existing sponsors. Whilst watchingthe Football might not have been a lot of fun of late, thenetworking and mingling with one another remains at an all timehigh.

We are fortunate at the Box Hill Hawks Football Club to havesuch a loyal band of sponsors who share a unique camaraderieand passion for the Club and I wish to thank each and everyone of them.

A particular mention must go to Paul Wheelton from our MajorSponsor, Budget Car and Truck Rental. Paul has supported theClub for many years and I am pleased to announce that he hasextended his Major Sponsorship with the Club for a fifth year inseason 2008. Paul’s support, however, extends well beyondhis sponsorship. In addition to attending almost everyPresident’s Luncheon with guests, Paul also supports all theClub’s Major Functions, which was highlighted by the seventables of guests that he brought along to our Dinner Auction thisyear. On behalf of everybody involved with this Club, thank youPaul for your invaluable support.

Thank you also to Dr. Peter Hughes from our Major CommunityPartner, Epworth Eastern, and our other Major Support Sponsorsin Bartercard Melbourne North, Box Hill Institute, Deer ParkEngineering and Wadham Park. Without your support, this Clubwould not be able to maintain its status as one of the mostprofessional clubs on and off the field in the V.F.L.

I would also like to welcome our newest sponsors to the Club in2007 season in Beetle Branding, Van Go Coffee Australia,Nunawading Toyota, IAS Sports Bet and Peter Bailey andAssociates. Thank you for joining us. We hope we can buildon our already good working business relationship in seasonsto come.

As you would be aware, this is the first time in many years theGeneral Manager’s Report has been incorporated in the AnnualReport so mentioning new sponsors is something that I wish tocontinue in years to come.

I am pleased to announce that our Coterie Group, The VicePresident’s Club, has reached an all time high of sixteenmembers.

This exclusive membership group is made up of a band ofinterested business people and supporters who not only assistthe Box Hill Hawks Football Club financially, but also have avested interest in growing the group to help strengthen the Cluboff the field. Thank you to all 16 Vice President’s Clubmembers listed below:

Mr. Ian Campbell Mr. Rob Collier Mr. Jim Conway Mr. Greg Cook Mr. Martin Cowling Ms. Margaret Hendy Mr. Mark Lisle Mr. Chris Moore Mr. Peter Papos Mr. Tony Pinwill Mr. David Platt Mr. Martin Ralston Mr. Peter Rowsthorn Mr. Tony Tsourdalakis Mr. John Ure Mr. Bill White

Our aim in 2008 is to grow this Coterie Group to over twentymembers so feel free to contact the Club if you would like toreceive further information.

The four official Club functions of 2007 all ran smoothly andwere a success in their own right.

The Jumper Presentation Night at Hawthorn Receptions,Players and Officials Ball at Crown Casino and Vote Count andPresentation Night at Albert By The Lake were all well attendedand enjoyed thoroughly by guests.

The Annual Dinner Auction, also held at Hawthorn Receptions, was by far the most successful fundraising event ever held inmy time at the Box Hill Hawks Football Club. The functionraised an amazing $65,000, almost double what we haveachieved in the past. This was thanks largely to the increasednumber of guests and better quality of auction items.

I must say, organising the Annual Dinner Auction is somethingthat I do not look forward to. However, when so many of oursupporters and members thoroughly enjoy the event, it iscertainly worth the effort. I want to personally thank our DinnerAuction Sub-Committee of Jim Conway, Greg Cook, SamKoulis and Mike Watson whom without their support, theAuction would not have been as successful as it was.

We must also thank everybody who attended the event as wellas all the kind sponsors who kindly donated their product orservices to assist the Club in its fundraising efforts.

To all the players and their partners, thank you for your supportthroughout the year. Your attendance at all our Club functions iscrucial and, without your loyal support, I do not think this Clubwould be where it is today.

Also, a big thank you to all the players’ parents. Your support ofyour sons by attending our various functions is very muchappreciated and helps form the close knit culture that footballclubs like ours so desperately require.

I extend my extreme gratitude to all Football and match daystaff and volunteers of the Club. Without your support, wewould not be able to function properly so thank you for turningup at training and matches week in - week out to help us out.

A special mention must go to outgoing Football Manager RicSprake. Ric has been involved with the Box Hill Hawks formany years now and has been a tremendous support to mepersonally and to many people other around the Club, so thankyou for always being there. I am glad to hear Ric will continue ina small Match Day Role next year and not be lost to the Clubaltogether.

To our Administration Manager, Bob Lyford, thanks again foryet another enjoyable season. This was our sixth seasontogether at the Box Hill Hawks and I could not think of a betterperson to have spent all this time with. From day to dayadministration, the extra hours organising events, or the stressof home match days, Bob has always been there representingthe Club with pride and we are extremely fortunate to have sucha capable person working within our structure.

Finally, to the Board of Directors, thank you for your guidanceand support throughout the season. I have learnt manyimportant lessons about running an organisation and abusiness from you and it is a pleasure to lead the Club underyour direction.

Community Partnerships

In 2007 the Box Hill Hawks Football Club embarked on a newand exciting programme, extending its involvement within thelocal community by aligning itself with specific not-for-profitorganisations and forming Community Partnerships.

A review of our previous community involvement identified thatthe Club had supported and participated in numerouscommunity based charity events for many years. However, ourapproach in the past was completely ad-hoc, driven by variousrequests at hand and, as such, focused outcomes were notachieved and there was little broader knowledge or recognitionof our community participation.

The purpose of the Club aligning with key charities was so thatwe could be pro-active rather than reactive in developingmeaningful community partnerships. Instead of spreading ourwings far and wide throughout the community and thereforediluting our efforts, we could focus on a smaller numberprogrammes developed in conjunction with selected CommunityPartners, therefore achieving far better results.

The main criteria in selecting these organisations were that theywere locally based and that their activities and involvementwithin the community did not conflict with one another. The BoxHill Hawks Football Club’s Community Partners during 2007were the Whitehorse Community Chest, Epworth EasternHospital, Reach Out For Kids and Life Education.

All in all, the Box Hill Hawks Football Club is delighted with thesuccess of its inaugural Community Partnerships programme in2007 and looks forward to increasing its involvement with thesegroups in the coming years.

An overview of the activities undertaken with our CommunityPartners during 2007 is as follows:

Life EducationLife Education aims to empower young people to make safeand informed decisions about drugs and their health. Facilitatedby specialist educators, who use innovative and interactiveteaching strategies, Life Education develops young people’s lifeskills, knowledge and confidence.

Reaching approximately 200,000 children and 18,000 familieseach year through family and school-based programs, LifeEducation is the largest independent, not-for-profit drugeducation organisation in Australia.

After an extremely successful Life Education Community Daylast season, the Club is again looking at ways to support LifeEducation in a pro-active manner in 2008.

Reach Out For KidsReach Out For Kids’ (ROK) mission is to enhance the quality oflife for children, young people, and families in the localcommunity. The organisation provides strength-based supportin the form of expert advice or information and counselling. Agroup service is also offered that promotes enhancing the wellbeing of children.
