This is the first bite of the cherry for the Box Hill Chess Club dipping its toe in the water with an international tournament. [wow 2 clichés in one sentence]

The field for the 2011 Victorian Championship re-
serves has now been decided as a 10 player round
robin tournament. This is the field 1. Bashar, Omar Khaled OS 1959

Unfortunately no Box Hill players in this somewhat modest field. The games for this tournament started last night at
the club. Too much competition for the DGT boards to show any of the games. You will find regular updates on both the championship and the reserves on the CV website
FIDE arbiters course
There have been 16 entrants
so far in our FIDE arbiters
seminar although not all en-
trants are confirmed it looks
like a good turn out. The
course is run in parallel to the
senior zonal and is organised
by international arbiter Gary
Bekker with the help of
Shaun Press and Charles
Zworestine
John Kable is ill
Life member John Kable was
taken to hospital last week
with a serious heart attack and
after open heart surgery un-
blocking 3 blocked arteries is
now recovering well at St
Vincent private. No visitors
though until next week
Canterbury Summer
Swiss
There has been some toing and froing since a combined preferred format was pro-posed by the presidents of
the Melbourne and Box Hill Chess clubs. This proposal was approved by the Box Hill Chess club committee but did not meet the seal by the MCC committee. Therefore it
was decided that each club
would go its own way. This is what our Summer Swiss cwill look like.

Prahran Chess club advertisement
We are now taking enrolments for Term 3. The Chess Club meets on Saturdays, 1-2.30pm from July 30 until September 17. Brochures are available at Box Hill Chess Club or email [email protected]. We kicked off the new Prahran Saturday Chess Club in Term 2 with a chess tourna-ment and many other fun and educational activities: Prepared for the Victorian Junior Championships Practiced recording games Learned some tricky tactics like Outposts and Interception Played in a Transfer Chess Tournament And had lots of fun! Well done to our students who participated in the recent Victorian Junior Championships, particularly Jamie Fay who was one move away in his last game from becoming the Victorian Under 10 Champion! IM Leonid Sandler and George Zaprudsky (Senior Chess Coaches)
Next Rookies Cup Sunday August 14. This will be the last Sunday tournament I can attend for awhile
anyway. It is good to see Box Hill members attending the arbiters
course who will then be versed in the rules and able to take over.
Remember Kind discretion is the motto

THE 2011 Box Hill Masters
A visit to the Hong Kong Chess Club
Round 2 of the masters was played last night but
due to late [too late] withdrawal from Savi and
Tom Narenthran some games have been played
out of sequence and some players have only
played one game. Here are the standings 1-3 Raine, Marcus 2046 2000 1.5
Martinez, Octavio 1780 1.5
Zelesco, Karl 2013 2038 1.5
4-5 Chew Lee, Max 1600 1465 1
Jordan, Bill 2275 2256 1

7-10 D'Onofrio, Gus 1566 0
Fan, Enoch 1606 0
Hayman, Adam 1672 1561 0
Bartnik, Robert 1559 0
Players who have only played one game are
Bartnik, Flude, Fan, and Jordan.
The game between Robert Bartnik and Bill Jordan
would have been of great interest to those inter-
ested in the history of Australian Junior chess two
former Australian Junior champions of the 70s
Robert Australian junior champ in 1973 and Bill
1974. Robert returning to chess after a long lay-
off and Bill a FIDE master having his first turn-out
at our club. Great scheduling by tournament or-
ganiser David Flude

2010 c.v. Champ play-off
The 2010 Vic Championship play-off between Chris Wallis and Dusan Stojic was held at the Box Hill Chess Club and ended in disaster for club champion Chris Wallis who after drawing the first game lost the
second one. This was after what I thought were winning positions in both games We are hoping Michael Gluzman will provide us with analysis of both games in his column

While overseas recently vis-iting the country of my birth, I stopped into the Hong Kong Chess Club and was warmly welcomed by committee members, Jack-son & Mingo. Their club
night is Monday 6.30 to 10.30 pm at the Queen
Elizabeth Stadium, 18 Oi Kwan Road, Wanchai, on Hong Kong Island. Fortu-nately for me English is spo-
ken at the club as the ma-jority of the juniors are Eng-lish educated. The club was holding its Summer Swiss tournament and the current
leader has a connection with Australia, a Hong Kong student currently studying at Sydney Uni-
versity on term holidays. He also plays club chess at the North’s Chess Club, Sydney. The num-bers are much smaller than Box Hill with only 15 boards in their 5
round Summer Swiss Tournament. However, like most chess clubs, they rely on volunteers and within 5 minutes of the club room opening,
tables, chess sets, clocks & score sheets are set up with the as-sistance of players & parents. Jackson and Mingo are the backbone
of the Chess Club and
are both FIDE instruc-tors and currently coaching a number of the Hong Kong juniors The website for the Hong Kong chess club is www.hkchess.org

18 open and Jennifer
finishing eq. 1st in the under 12 girls section
