This would be an asset in anyone’s home for the next 12 months. It will be awarded to the best player in the bottom half of the draw. It is expected that the bot- tom half will lay be- tween 12 and 1300 I had not intended to issue a news sheet immediately after Easter but when I saw Michael Gluzman’s analysis of the game Solomon v Schön in the Doeberl cup I felt I had to share it with my fellow members As a point of interest Eugene was the high- est ranked Victorian in the field narrowly missing out on a podium finish and an IM norm Our Calendar Guru David Flude made a few comments on the tournament The Doeberl Cup is played every year in Canberra at Easter. Players from all over australia and from overseas attend. A good number of Box Hill players attended. It is played in three divisions. The field in the Premier division was fearsomely strong including six Grandmasters and a large number of International Masters and FIDE Masters. Nevertheless the players from Box Hill ac- quitted themselves very well. There are too many to mention them all As far as I am concerned the following are highlights. Eugene Schön finished eighth on count back including defeating the very strong International Master Stephen Solomon as black. Eugene had a tough draw . In par- ticular he played the top seed GM Sune Berg Hansen of Denmark in the last round when both players needed to win to score second place in the tournament. Un- fortunately Eugene lost. Darryl Johansen and Bobby Cheng finished 12th and thir- teenth on 5.5 points amongst others sepa- rated by count back. I noticed that Bobby as black drew with a Grandmaster but I have not studied his results in detail. In the Major Thomas Feng finished third on 5.5 points, half a point behind the first and second place winners. Rad Chmiel per- formed very solidly to finish seventh on count back on five points amongst several others. DOEBERL CUP.
