    OVERSEAS VISITORS

    ANTICIPATED!

The Painted Lady Butterfly migrates in May from Africa. if it breeds the offspring emerge in August when a huge new migration from the Continent is expected this year.

Painted ladies are often seen on Buddleia bushes

and they especially love to feed on thistles .

Some gardeners are now saving their thistles

    instead of weeding them out.

    Dear Bowthorpe Community

We have some exciting news! In the next few months there will be

a new Dementia caf opening within the Grow Organisation, at the

    Bowthorpe Community Hub.

The Dementia Caf will provide information about living with

dementia and other services available locally in an informal and

comfortable environment. A Dementia Cafe is also a place to

relax, socialise and meet other people with dementia and their

carers, in a friendly relaxed atmosphere within a secure, safe

    environment.

More information in the next edition of Bowthorpe News.

Get Involved Week, 28th September 4th October 2015

Volunteering has a considerable positive impact across our city. In recognition of this the City Council is launching Get Involved Week.

This will run from 28th September to 4th October 2015. The week will

showcase the wide array of opportunities on offer to residents who want

to get more involved in their neighbourhood, whether this be about getting

their hands dirty in a community garden, becoming a Scout leader, joining

a community centre committee or something completely different. We are

inviting community and voluntary groups to take part simply by

scheduling their normal activities during this week, and opening

them up so that residents can get a taster of volunteering.

A programme detailing all the activities taking place in the week will be published and Norwich residents will be invited to sign up and take part. Think of it a bit like Heritage Open Days for community activities! Our hope is by focusing on one week, we will generate more interest in volunteering and see more residents getting involved in the activities you run.

If you would like to take part, or would like further information, please dont

hesitate to contact Max Griffiths on email [email protected]

or on 01603 213169. Once you have completed an activity form, it needs

to be submitted by 17th July.

WHY HAS THE BUILDING WORK STOPPED ?

DELAYS IN CONSTRUCTION ON THREE SCORE FIELDS.

As numerous exasperated residents know, construction of the

new roads and infrastructure on Three Score fields is at a

standstill, and the closure of the lower end of Earlham Green

Lane continues. The reason for this is as follows: the design for

a retaining wall near the oak tree at the bottom of Earlham

Green Lane was found to be unworkable. Lafarge Tarmac were

given the design, but now have to await a new one. A new plan

is currently before the planners pending approval. A further delay

of at least a month is expected before work recommences.

Lafarge Tarmac are mindful of the inconvenience and frustration

caused by the blocking off of the lane and the fields.

Discussions have taken place to see if additional passageways

can be opened up for pedestrians and dog-walkers to use.

One cut through the tree belt is proposed, and another near

Earlham Green lane. For this to happen some new fencing is

needed, and should be brought in from another site in the near

    future.

(Thanks to Matthew Watkins of Lafarge Tarmac for supplying this information

    on 22/7/15.)

In this months issue I have chosen to cover the topic of bogus callers.

It is a common misconception that all burglars break into homes there are some who try to trick or con their way in and they are known as bogus callers. These individual will pretend to be on official business from respectable concerns such as the Utility Companies - Gas, Electricity and Water - or they may claim to be from the Council. Bogus callers succeed because they sound believable, so don't be fooled; make sure in your own mind that they are whom they claim to be by following these simple steps:

Think before you open the door. I recommend that you use your chain and spy hole or look out of the window to see if you recognise them. Do not be embarrassed to ask callers for proof of identity, remember a genuine tradesmen should carry an identification card with their photograph on. Check this carefully. If you are unsure, telephone the company the caller claims to represent. The Utilities now offer a password identification system and any caller from one of these companies should be able to give a pre-arranged password as additional proof of identity.

Beware of callers who attempt to distract you by claiming that they have seen something untoward in your rear garden or somewhere which may encourage you to leave your house. They may have an accomplice awaiting this distraction.

If you are not convinced of the identity of the caller, don't let them in and ask the caller to come back later and arrange for a friend, relative or neighbour to be present on their return or ask the caller to contact this person.

Treat every stranger with caution. If you are still worried, dial 999 immediately and ask for the police.

Should you require any additional advice on this matter or any other topic, please feel free to telephone the Bowthorpe Safer Neighbourhood Team on the non-emergency number 101 or by emailing me direct on [email protected].

STORMS ARE STILLED! In recent months our news has been filled with stories of refugees fleeing their homelands on unseaworthy vessels in the desperate

cry for a better and safer life. Although many have drowned, the tide of people seeking a life of hope continues day after day. People crying out for help in fear of their lives is echoed in the story of Jesus stilling the storm. In that story, it was the disciples of Jesus, seasoned fishermen, who cried out for help in fear of their lives. On the Sea of Galilee a ferocious storm suddenly appeared, which threatened to engulf them. They were terrified. But then Jesus spoke to the wind and waves, saying, Quiet! Be still! The sea became calm immediately. Who is this? Even the wind and waves obey him! (Mark 4:41). This is the question asked by Jesus own disciples. Only God had the power to still and subdue raging waters and deliver his fearful people. So who was this person with such God-like power? When Jesus silenced the stormy winds and calmed the wild waves, the people saw the God who was there at the beginning. Who is this? is exactly the right question. Who is this who has power and authority to speak to the wind and waves? John says of Jesus Through him all things were made (John 1:3). The wind and waves obeyed Jesus for he created them! In Jesus we see the God of creation. The disciples on board the boat that night would never have forgotten that boat trip. Jesus dealt with their fear and he can deal with our fears too. Jesus understands our world and the storms we face. He can restore the calm for us just as he did for them. Are you facing a storm in your life that threatens to overwhelm you and sink you? It is often in the storms of life that in desperation we cry out to Jesus. It is also in those times that we can recognise Jesus most fully. For it is then that we see his power, know his presence and hear his voice. Why dont you cry out to him today?

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, you calmed the raging sea and showed your power. Please calm the storm within me today. Amen. Every blessing, Rev. Mark Elvin

    ASHWELL COURT

    Hello Everyone,

Well at long last we have sunshine and blue skies but unfortunately at present there is still a nasty, chilly wind around. Nevertheless it seems that summer has really arrived.

We have already had a visit to the seaside. Several of us joined in a whole days outing with our friends from Bradecroft. We went to Hunstanton for lunch and had a coastal ride to Sheringham for tea. As usual it was a lovely day out, beautifully driven as always by Matt and so well organised by George. Unfortunately it was not warm enough to tempt anyone to paddle but we are looking forward to our outing to Dunwich at the end of June, when surely the weather will have warmed up.

We have, however, celebrated glorious June with a delicious Strawberry Tea, followed by entertainment by Dick High. It was all very enjoyable and thanks as usual to our entertainments team for the lovely strawberry tea.

Yet another visit by the South Park Stompers, demonstrating their excellent line dancing, was also enjoyed recently.

All our usual activities are continuing. Tuesday and Thursday mornings see us stretching and marching (from our chairs) as we do our usual exercises. The Luncheon Club is also prospering with full tables for our delicious lunches, cooked by Christine. Our thanks also to Maggie for all her help and also to Paul and Mary for their assistance.. With our Book Club, our Knit ad Natter Group and various other activities, such as singing in the Community Choir and Scrabble fortnightly, we are certainly very busy at Ashwell Court!

That is all for now. We hope you all have a very enjoyable summer. Best wishes from all at Ashwell Court. Margaret

    Male carers Must seek help.

Thousands of male carers in Norfolk may be struggling because they find it difficult to talk about their caring role and dont seek the support that they need. A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support. Around 42% of the countys 95,000 carers are male.

Local carer Alan (67) is looking after his wife Rita (68), who is in a wheelchair and has emphysema he says: You dont feel that you want to burden other people, but I did admit that I was finding it difficult to cope with cooking from scratch and so got help from my daughter and also took some cooking lessons. Carers like me shouldnt keep it to themselves but must go out and seek help.

    Happy days! John

Hello Everyone With the promise of an English summer looming! Many folks will be planning trips to explore the great outdoors and one of the most interesting pastimes for some is digging up the past.

Norfolk & Norwich Archaeological Society When browsing the societys website, it becomes apparent that there is much more to archaeology than one might first imagine

Aims & Aspirations The Societys aims are to study the history, architecture and antiquities of Norfolk, and the preservation of all kinds of objects of archaeological value. They also provide information on the counties ancient arts and monuments, while actively encouraging individuals and public bodies alike in research and excavations.

Membership Members include both professional and amateur archaeologists, but the vast majority of members are simply those who are fascinated by the history in the area in which they live.

Young People The society also sponsors and organises the YAC branch, which is a kind of 'archaeological youth club', providing activities and experiences for young people, aged 8-16, interested in archaeology.

Lectures & Excursions The society offers monthly lectures every autumn and winter, which are held at the Town Close Auditorium, Castle Museum, Norwich. Lectures are free to all members; non-members are most welcome and are asked to leave a small donation. Excursions to various parts of Norfolk and elsewhere are organised in the warmer months.

The Society's Library The Society has its own library containing books, journals and pamphlets of local interest. The Society also publishes its own annual journal Norfolk Archaeology which is one of Britains oldest established journals of archaeology and local history and has been published every year since 1846. If you would like to know more, why not - dig a little deeper! at http://www.nnas.info/home

I would like to take this opportunity of sincerely thanking both Mark and Bruno for leading an Alpha Course and Bible Study over the last few months at Leyham Court. Im sure everyone who attended either one or both courses, including myself, found it a wonderful experience and grew in faith from it. Sadly, all good things come to an end, and Bruno has now

moved on to become an Ordained URC Minister responsible for 3 churches. We will miss both of them very much. Please join with me in wishing Gods Richest Blessings on Bruno in his new post. If anyone

would like to take up the challenge of learning more of the Bible, please speak to Mark Elvin (Bowthorpe Church Centre) who will put you in contact

    with a suitable group.

When the sun goes down in the dusk creatures of the night come out. They live parallel lives to us in our own familiar woods and countryside but we seldom see them. They exist in a largely different time: a time of darkness. There are some 18 different bats in the UK. And world wide it is thought there are as many as 160000 species of

moths. They are predators and prey, hunters and hunted, in a largely sightless world. Like modern fighter jets the bats use a kind of radar to detect and hunt down the moths. The moths have a short flying life, often of just a few nights, dedicated to finding and being found by a mate so they can lay their eggs. But as they come out in public they run the risk of being found by the bats. Some moths can detect the bats ultrasound radar clicks and take evasive action: some it seems even emit their own clicks to confuse the bats in this life and death struggle. And all this while we switch on our lights and screens and settle down comfortably indoors.

Moths are attracted to light. Maybe they use the light to orientate themselves or as a navigation aid. But when they get to a light they seem to be trapped and fly constantly at or around it. So it is possible to catch, observe and identify moths in a light trap. Many are surprisingly beautiful. Bats can be seen flying above you, silhouetted against the still-light sky at dusk. . Im told that you can see them feed by throwing mealworms in the air. And there are bat-detectors that track them and allow you to hear the ultra-sound clicks they make. These devices will even identify the kind of bat.

We will be observing moths and tracking bats on Saturday July 4th in Twenty Acre Wood. Come to St Marys Church Hall on Hutchinson Road, West Earlham at 8pm for some refreshments before we make an excursion into the night-time wood. No charge, all welcome.

Parents and children past and present visited. There were several parents who came to pre-school as a child themselves and they now have children who attend the pre-school.
