Spring is in full bloom at present and those summer months are currently budding, on the verge of abruptly appearing, sun blazing, scorching temperatures and all. And with these seasons appear a completely different kind of season; that of fashion, new trends, new collections and, of course, new designers. With every coming month, every stylish female in the know, will be completely aware that they have to keep one eye pointed directly onto the fashion radar. Thus, here I have compiled a list of three up and coming fashion designers; those who are fresh to the catwalk scene, bringing with them original, innovative and creative new collections that are most certainly going to stamp their mark on the world of fashion.

We were all aware of X Factor this year...and whether you absolutely adore the show or, quite frankly, despise it, I bet most people were still watching intrigued. Contestants aside, I definitely focused on the outfits that a certain Ms Cheryl Cole was donning each week. Remember the daring and controversial black body con dress she wore, embellished with metal tubes around the chest..? Welcome to the fashion scene, David Koma. He won the Vauxhall Fashion Scout’s Merit Award for Spring/Summer ‘10, thus seizing a much coveted place on the catwalk at London Fashion Week.

Fashion FixWe explored the UK’s fashion world to bring you a selection of highly recommended up and coming fashion designers.

His S/S ’10 collection still reflects the style of the dress described above, that both Cheryl and Beyoncé have worn, but with a slightly exotic feel and a more playful attitude. His pieces are dramatic and exciting, using interesting cutaways and lines; ranging from white fabrics with blocks of bold colour, to black dresses still using the tubing, but in a range of bright colours, giving a vigorous nod to the tribal trend spied at other catwalk shows.

Hermione De Paula obtains her ideas for her designs from what seems like anything and everything, ranging from the unusual to the downright bizarre. Her first ever collection was titled ‘I Heart Elizabeth Berkley’, after the main character in the 1995 notorious film, ‘Showgirls’. Her S/S ’10 ‘Las Venus’ collection is romantic, (naturally taking inspiration from the Greek goddess of love) but with a dark twist, almost taking on the characteristics of a fairytale. Sheer and silky fabrics are used, oozing femininity, yet the

Never have we been more politically and socially aware of the environment, placing considerable efforts on, ‘going green’. So it makes perfect sense that fashion designers would deftly follow suit. Christopher Raeburn uses military fabrics, such as parachutes interestingly enough, to create his designs for both men and women. Raeburn is a graduate from the prestigious London College of Art and all of his designs proudly boast that they have all been produced and made in England. His collection features macs, hooded jackets, capes and ‘jellyfish bags’, all of which are structured

darker twists of black and frequent use of purple give a delightfully wicked edge to the pieces, ensuring that they stand out on the wearer. An emphasis on intricate patterns displays the pieces as being stunningly beautiful. Hermione is another winner of the Merit Award, due to her quirky design, effortlessly accentuating the female form. Her pieces possess a delicate feel, yet nevertheless have a harder tone to them that makes them notably striking.

and tailored; yet cater for modern lifestyles and potentially extreme weather conditions, perhaps indeed the unexpected English weather, when the rain splashes down from out of nowhere. Fabrics are translucent, featuring bold black outlines of seams and splashes of vivid colour to emphasise different aspects of the item of clothing. His collection is simple, yet a key focus on detail still remains and the result is one that is stylish and of high quality, yet practical for an everyday lifestyle.

Unfortunately the weather was not on my side, however it provided an excuse to dig out my favourite dome umbrella! I love the fact it’s see through aside from the white and black leopard print strip. I was very excited about the new ‘Alice in Wonderland film’ coming out and was inspired by the white and blue colour palette. My jacket is actually a vintage blouse which I tailored with a belt as it’s a little too big and I carried the spotted theme through in my tights. As they are Primarni you can’t really see the detail from afar but they provide an alternative colour and look to flesh coloured or black legwear.

This semester Wednesday is my all-day lecture so comfort is essential. These are some of my favourite boots and they have a great worn effect ruched front - I got them at a 30% off promotion at Dune! I embraced the supposed change of season and brought out the pastel blue jersey blazer adding a feminine bow belt for detail and shape.

work/trip to the BalticI’m having a bit of a love affair with peg leg trousers at the moment; it took a while to find the perfect pair as I have such short legs! I teamed them with this cropped lace blouse, (a bargain find in a vintage shop), to provide some pretty texture. My Lacoste lace-up shoes were a freebie from a fashion PR placement I was on last year and are unbelievably comfy. The heels give some much needed height to lengthen the legs.

Friends birthday night out Digital’s ‘Stonelove’ is one of the big nights on a Thursday in Newcastle and can get quite busy. This vintage floral number is one of my many playsuits and was light enough to not get too hot. To break up the black I used this orange lace bandeau top for a splash of vibrant colour.

Cropped lace blouse, floral playsuits and dome umbrellas!

We all love a little style stalking every now and then so we’ve been catching up with Lauren to give you a glimpse at what’s inside her wardrobe...

This year the summer fashion of 2010 looks a lot at nude fabrics and pale colours. Here I have updated a maxi skirt from Zara to make it fit in with my summer look, and I will also know that no-one else will have the same dress as me! The shorter style means it can be worn as a tunic on the beach; it can be layered up over a t-shirt and under and oversized cardi on those not-so-hot English summer days, and can also be thrown on over a pair of tights with a waist belt for a cool daytime look. This look is not only the perfect summer dress, it also doesn’t break the bank!

You will need: A maxi dress (this one is from Zara and cost £19.95, it also comes in four other colours) around 50 buttons (from your local habi-dashary/market/nan's button collection) 1 meter of thin ribbon, some scissors and a needle and thread.

How to: fold the thin ribbon in half and stitch the halfway point to the centre of the front on the waistband. This will then tie like a halterneck around the neck to hold up the dress, the elastic waistband will sit over the bust.

Hide the stitching from the ribbon with a but-ton, and sew a few buttons around this point too to make a little feature in the middle. Mix and match your colours, or opt for more interstice and unique button shapes to add interest.

For the main body of the dress, use your needle and thread to catch small parts of the fabric and make them pucker, this will add ruffles and pleats and also make the dress shorter. Add a button on top of each pucker to hide the stitches and add a flash of colour. Repeat this all the way around the dress in a random pattern until the dress is well and truly ruffled!

The underskirt part may now be longer than the top layer, if this has happened pucker up the un-derskirt with a few stitches too, these will not need buttons put on top though as the top layer of the shirt will cover the stitches.

If you are feeling adventurous, add small fabric flowers instead or as well as the buttons for a more romantic look.

We love customising!

Describe your inspiration for your submitted illustrations.I wanted to create dreamy and warm images that reflected my love for summer, fashion, romantic pictures and nostalgia.

As a child did you always want to be an illustrator or did you have another dream job?I’ve always loved to draw, ever since I could hold a pencil. I’ve always wanted to do something creative with my time, but it’s only more recently that I’ve followed my love for illustration.

In three words describe how your job makes you feel.Imagination. Freedom. Possibility.

What are the greatest inspirations for your work?My work is often inspired by fashion, photography, music, nature and folklore. I love to combine ideas from the ethereal and fantasy and create something new, playful and colourful.

How have you established yourself in the industry?I started as a contributing artist for a local music magazine, it’s really exciting to see your work published for the first time, they were really great and gave me a lot of freedom. I’m fairly new to freelancing, so I’m still learning, and building up my portfolio. The Internet has been a really useful tool, especially with all the blogs and social networks available, I’ve met some great people and other artists, it’s really good to get some feedback on your work from them.

What are you favourite things to paint? My favourite things to paint…. Probably birds or animals… I love to create scenes full of colour and energy.

Do you prefer vintage or charity shops?I prefer vintage, I love to find something really unique and interesting, I like to think there’s a story behind the item as well

What is your favourite flavour cupcake?Red velvet! Yum

What is your favourite biscuit?Oreos. Although, I am quite partial to a chocolate chip cookie.

Are you reading a book at the moment and if yes what is it?I just finished reading The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho, it’s a lovely story

What was your favourite film when you were little?Rainbow Brite. I loved horses when I was younger, I always wanted a horse that could fly!

What was your last dream about? My last dream was very strange, I was at a party and the monster from Cloverfield had come to take over the city, so I had to hide under the stairs. I have no idea where that came from, I haven’t seen that movie in months

What do you hope for the future?I hope I can continue working in illustration, I’m excited to meet new people, new projects and places they might take me.

Do you prefer rainbows or butterflies?Rainbows

Do you prefer dreams or daydreaming?Dreams, my imagination runs wild when I’m asleep! I do wonder where I get such surreal thoughts from sometimes.

Once upon a time... (Complete the sentence)There was a magical place far far away…

Describe your inspiration for The first shoot was for a hair salon in Nottingham with a photographer who I’ve worked with a few times before. They wanted a vintage inspired photoshoot with the styling to reflect this. I have to admit I’m not a massive fan of the “vintage look” I think it works on a person if they’re whole persona is such, but for a photoshoot, personally it’s not really my style. The salon had picked up a few pieces from a local vintage shop and I brought a large selection from my styling wardrobe and I mixed and matched. I decided to keep within an 80s theme and actually loved the images we produced! It’s so motivating to work with such a talented and inspiring team, which was the same case for the second photoshoot featured. I had worked with the photographer many times before, but not the model and makeup artist. My inspiration for this shoot was actually down to the model, she sent me over a few images, which were very layered. I chose a dress which fitted the brief, then made the neck piece which I felt completed the look.

Who would be your dream model to style for a fashion shoot?Oh, that’s difficult because there’s so many! I would have to say my favourite would be Chanel Iman. She is so beautiful and an amazing model. My friend was lucky enough to do her makeup for her most recently ID shoot, and apparently she was absolutely lovely, which makes a model a much better candidate to work with. I have worked with too many pre-madonnas in my time, but yet it’s the more talented ones who are the nicest to work with!

Who do you respect the most in the stylist industry?Again, this is a hard one. If it was purely fashion, it would have to be Anna Wintor-a legend! I can’t choose! My East Coast choice would be Grace Coddington, the original stylist and a true, true talent and my West Coast choice would be Rachel Zoe. Both people I look up to and aspire to be like. An-other person I love is Kelly Cutrone, I would be completely starstuck if I was ever to meet her!

Who are you favourite designers and why?Karl Largerfeld easily. He’s such a legend in the design world. Everything he creates is a piece of art and timeless. I could sit and study one garment for hours. I believe he was a great replacement (obviously not instantly) for Coco Chanel who is my 100% my idol, everything about that woman is amazing. For a less traditional design I would head to Hussain Chalayan. I am proud to announce I own one of his pieces, unfortunately it’s not a Haute Couture Chanel pieces as my world would be complete! But Chalayan’s designs are mind boggling, the garments are graphical structures in their selves, amazing pattern cutting!

Page 53: Bows, a love affair with fashion

In three words describe your personal style.Black, short and timeless!

Do you have some fashion advice for this summer? Please be yourself. Wear what you love, not what you think you should wear. There are too many people out there following trends to a “T”, and you are often wearing something that you know some-body else owns or will see somebody else wearing. The people I ad-mire the most have their own individual look, they don’t wear head to toe designer, they mix it up with high street, high end and low end, charity shop finds, plus customized pieces. It’s how you wear your clothes that makes it individual. It’s summer, it’s time to have fun!

How did you establish yourself in the stylist industry? With A LOT of hardwork! I had to do a lot of free work and rubbish jobs, like steaming for 8 hours nonstop with a stylist who spent the whole time chatting to the models and was very rude to me, but it’s the clients who take notice of the people who work hard and always with a smile, who then employ you over the last person. People always remember the person who is happy to do anything for you and hopefully repay you with a job in the future-I definitely belive in karma!

What is your favourite flavour cup cake?My favourite cupcake flavour is Snickerlious! My friend owns a company in Sheffield called Fancie. cupcakes who are delicious! I have to seriously limit myself!

Are you reading a book at the moment and if yes what is it?I am reading at the moment. I did go through a stage when I never touched a book, then whilst at university I was reading a book a day! I have calmed down a little now, but my favourite books are any-thing to do with ghosts-a bit of an obsession with me, so the book I’m reading at the moment is called “The Oxford Book of English Ghost Stories” in keeping!

What was your favourite film when you were little? My favourite films were anything by Disney, I have to admit this is still the same! I think my favourite (I can’t choose one!) was The Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast and The Lion King.

What was your last dream about?I actually dreamt of my old school! It was shut down a couple weeks back due to funding problems, I dreamt I was back there looking around just as it had closed, very sad!

What do you hope for the future? My hope is that I can carry on doing what I love with enough money so I am comfortable, able to send my children to private school, and have a loving strong family.

Do you prefer rainbows or butterflies? I prefer butterflies because you can touch them.

Who is your favourite fashion photographer and why would you like to work with them?My ultimate photographer is David LaChapelle. Wow, he’s such a talent. Each image he takes is such a piece of art. Everything is dif-ferent from anything else I have ever seen, people do try to recreate his style, but just never come anywhere close!

As a child did you always want to be a stylist or did you have a different dream job? When I was younger I wanted to be an artist, but soon realized you only become successful when you die, so that very quickly became a memory! I then wanted to be an interior designer, was allowed to design and decorate my room but didn’t enjoy the physical work!! I carried on with art at school, and decided I wanted to do graphic de-sign at my foundation year at college and had always been interested in clothes and received many comments, I mean I had a label selling in the shops by the time I was 18! So it came down to choosing my options and sporadically decided on fashion design instead of graph-ics on the day!

In three words describe how your job makes you feel?Proud, creative and busy!

Have you visited the fashion capitals of the world and if yes which is your favourite to shop in?I have been lucky enough to visit London (I used to live there) Paris, Cape Town and New York, which, are a few of the fashion capitals of the world, and I would have to say New York is my favorite to shop in. London is great, but I think because used to be home I don’t see it as a novelty any more. Paris is good if you have A LOT of money, Cape Town is great but the clothing, not so good for UK weather, but New York, wow. I am due to go (I haven’t been this year) and I always come back lighter in my wallet, but paying excess on luggage! The place is magical, you can literally find anything you want. I have been spoilt as I have been 9 times in the last decade and when I was 16 I spent the holiday spending on 5th Avenue shopping in Gucci and Louis Vuitton, but the last I picked up great pieces in flea markets, vintage stores in the village and a few styling essen-tials from American Apparel and Urban Outfitters, I know we have them over here, but with the exchange rate-it’s so much cheaper! A store that I do always shop in and look forward to each time is Bloomingdales, it’s my second home!

How do you find working as a stylist in the North of England and do you have any plans of moving to London?I find working in my home town great! There is a lot more hap-pening up here then people think! Last year I styled an MTV Ident with a company called Universal Everything who created all of the Idents (a small advert before the program starts, E4 have them also) and they are based in Sheffield. The Designers Republic were also based up here, who used to employ the MD of Universal Everything and another company I have worked with, Human Studio. If I need to travel out of Sheffield, then it’s not a problem, there is Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham all just over an hour away, and London now only 2hours away. I don’t plan to move back to London-I have already done that, and didn’t benefit from it. I mean sure I made friends who are styling working in the London fashion scene, but I have my contacts up in Sheffield, all who are loyal and come to me if their project needs a stylist.

Do you prefer designer or vintage and why?I have to admit I prefer designer. Vintage is great for young styl-ists who are starting out to play about with it, but designer just has a completely different feel, look, style to it. It is timeless or mould breaking. Vintage designer is a great compromise as you can use such classic pieces, but my style is about forever keeping one step ahead, something designer pieces helps you do.
