Welcome to the tenth edition of the Bowmer and Kirkland

community newsletter.

Project Programme - The Word Building

Works are still progressing well and we are still on programme to complete the construction works in Autumn 2016.

The external envelope is now fully weather tight following the completion of the glazed façade that faces out towards the river Tyne. The internal fit out is also progressing well on each of the floors with joinery, ceilings and wall finishes. External concrete retaining walls are progressing around the perimeter of the building and the hard landscaping works are progressing to all areas around the building including the new footpath works which have now started on Dean Street. Ferry Street

We will be starting the installation of the new Puffin crossing on Ferry Street from Monday 23rd May 2016. When complete this will provide the link from Dean Street across Ferry Street heading to the Ferry terminal. The civil and paving works will be carried out over a three week period from Monday 23rd May 2016 and will be constructed in two halves in order to maintain a single lane live under temporary traffic lights as noted on the plan above. Traffic light installations will follow and will be operational once all of the external areas are complete in Autumn 2016.

Bowmer & Kirkland Ltd is an Associate member of the Considerate Constructors’ Scheme.

Only a select number of high performing contractors achieve Associate status in the scheme, which now registers more than 400 sites a month. Associates are companies which have proved their commitment to improving the image of the industry through a large number of registered sites that have consistently performed to a high level.

Launched nationwide in 1997, the scheme was set up by the industry to improve the image of construction. Sites registering with the scheme are given marks following a Code of Considerate

Practice, designed to encourage best practice beyond statutory requirements.

The main areas of concern are: the environment, the workforce and the general public. Individual site performance and monitoring is carried out by an experienced industry professional who will assess the site’s performance in the following categories: workforce, safety, community, appearance and environment.
