Henselite’s NSW manager David Holt really proved he practices what he preaches with another huge win at the Australian Indoor Championships at Tweed Heads Bowls Club in August.

Feeling like a change from his usual Size 4 Dreamline XG in the White Breaker colour that he has used for a while now, David simply picked up a different set in bright pink Coral colour for the trip north and took to them like a breeze.

In the final against 2010 winner and Australian vice-captain Brett Wilkie, although David made the better start to the game and took out the first set 9-6, Brett wasn’t going to give up lightly and turned on some amazing shots to take the second 7-4.

After two ends of the tie-break again the ends were tied at one shot each with this epic confrontation coming down to the winner of the final end. With the shot changing hands pretty much with every bowl delivered it was anyone’s guess who would take out the title but agonisingly for Brett his last drive shot with David holding two shots hit the jack but only managed to feather it about a quarter of an inch and David was champion.

“Any win against Brett is a great one but particularly up here on the Tweed carpet that he knows so well is particularly satisfying” said David. “I’ve been here quite a few times before and struggled a little but my Dreamline XG found a really consistent line on every rink I played this week”.

2014 Australian Indoor Title goes to

David Holt

Having won the outdoor Australian Champion of Champions title in Adelaide last October David now gets the stupendous opportunity to represent his adopted country as Australia’s representative in both World Champion of Champions in Christchurch at the end of November and now the 2015 World Cup at Warilla next April.

The Innovator

Barry Hamer

A form of bowls games was played 2000 years ago and has evolved into a sport enjoyed by many socially and internationally. Since then the gathering speed of the evolution of lawn bowls, and stiff completion from competing sports over the past 20 years has accelerated past the time when lawn bowls once considered amongst the most played sports during the 60s in NSW has lost that ranking, so how should that situation be addressed? For starters, considering the somewhat unique demographics and scope of our game played by the very young to very old any time any place day or night indoors and outdoors, surly that’s a worthy platform to build upon and developing further? The above just about sums up the flexibility and accessibility to play lawn bowls in NSW, the venues are close by and facilities are

Now that the Commonwealth Games are over, pondering the wonderful final ceremony and medals won by our amazing athletes overall, now is the time to evaluate and look towards Gold at Surfers Paradise in Queensland hopefully to increase medals for Lawn Bowls. Congratulations must go to our lawn bowls medal winners with the hope that more will follow at the Gold Coast on home soil. • Triples Silver: Kelsey Cottrell, Karen Murphy, and Lynsey Clarke.• Fours Bronze: Wayne Ruediger, Brett Wilkie, Nathan Rice, and Matthew Flapper.• Para-sport mixed pairs bronze: (Julie Foster & Jones) Tony Scott & Peter Scott. Australia’s proven capacity to successfully promote major international sporting events coupled with ideal weather, excellent planning and development must be matched by the preparation and training of our lawn bowls side for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The good news is that Australia has an abundance of very talented lawn bowlers hav-ing the potential to win gold medals. However the bad news is that in spite of the gallant efforts of our talented bowlers

THE GAMES ARE OVER -

SO LET’S EVALUATEcompeting at the games in Scotland, the lawn bowls media coverage was almost non-existent, hardly what one would call motivating? Recalling the familiar phrase “why is it so” often stated by a famous TV Scientist presenter long ago, perhaps the bowling fraternity must urgently address that question also to develop ways and means to lift the profile and perceived credibility of our game as observed by the media, sponsors, and the general public today?

To be fair and to the point, how can gifted or high profile bowlers widely spread over large distances around Australia be discovered, groomed and be matched into teams and sides ready for events such as the Commonwealth games? One solution dare I say once again is to critically address the dreaded subject regarding “professionalism” a matter that has been covered and tossed around for years in bowling circles in spite of the fact that some talented groups of lawn bowlers have been enticed and remunerated in various ways since the 70s and good luck to them. Combine that situation with the multitude of Quasi professional competitions, the failed Premier league, miscellaneous competitions, and the way some pennant teams are paid, surely the bleeding obvious demands that

urgent attention planning and formatting of such issues is essential to create a truly transparent and professional approach to our game. At a time when most other high profile sports have established professionalised elite levels, surely it must be time for our lawn bowls administrations in Australia to seriously consider the daunting task of addressing professionalism before another group decides to do it for us? Therefore considering the vast distances between bowling clubs throughout Australia, demographics and the sheer gravity of the issues inhibiting such concepts must be comprehensively explored with open minds to enable lawn bowls in Australia to become more dynamic and creditable competing on the world stage from now on. To some this may appear to be mission impos-sible, therefore every available resource must be engaged to create an achievable project to strive for by addressing Policies, Distances, Formats, Training, Selections, and Uniformity listed above to be explored next month. Everything on that list fully developed and matched up has the capacity to win or lose medals so switch on the iron and get hot up ready for the heat of battle ahead. Go for gold all? The Innovator, Barry Hamer

TOO MANY LAWN BOWLS FORMATS?excellent; so why has our game failed to attract and maintain membership and status since the 60s? Well for starters articles in my innovations columns since 1991 have regularly addressed the above featuring comprehensive issues of relevant innovations however addressing that and many other important issues for responses still remain unanswered by occupants of so called Ivory Towers? Therefore, now that the Commonwealth games are well over” “time to evaluate” formats and rules may well be an appropriate time right now? Rules and formats for every sport must be such that all players and their viewers must be able to easily interact, follow and relate to what’s going on during the playing of any sport in progress?

Ignoring articles addressing many rules and

formats without critical examination and feedback constantly raised by players including my columns must do very little to attract and enrich lawn bowls and spectator participation. Well like all organisations change may be painful, sometimes bordering on the impossible therefore all must seriously consider in our case, the issues needing most urgent attention to be up there with other competing sports to attract membership, sponsorships, and media interest by creating well researched credible and exciting formats for approval. Therefore putting aside politics and channel vision, the bleeding obvious is that lawn bowls overall now has a real opportunity review, evaluate, refine and create lawn bowls formats worthy of serious evaluation and presentation for the future and wellbeing of our game. Although I have already touched on this topic before, allow me to commence this series by

OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2014 NEW SOUTH WALES BOWLS PLUS 11

addressing the way the three games below shape up on the green and in the minds of the players already grappling with the varying rules and formats introduced at various venues right now. As lawn bowls is a universally played home and abroad game, its formats and rules must also be universal not only to be credible and playa-ble but be clearly understood by all players new and old competing and being fully aware of the wellbeing of our game’s future. Put simply lawn bowls in NSW has far too many rules and formats often introduced without much notice and extensive research, therefore with feedback and interaction by my readers during this series can re-address and introduce key innovations relevant to this series commencing with the formats and rules of the core games below.• Singles • Pairs • Fours

Although clearly defined in our official rule book each one of the above events have been amended officially and unofficially by bowling members and club committees over many years, now is an opportunity to submit your good ideas. As I am assembling the list of issues for next months column to be addressed, readers may wish to submit their pet issue for evaluation by Email to me: [email protected] Note that the above email address is open for your confidential feed back on innovations or suggestions regarding the welfare and status of our game. Three sample issues for starters:- (a) Should Pairs matches be played in top competition as specified the NSW rule book?

(b) Should Triples be dropped from serious competition and be only played socially?

(c) Should penalty points be introduced during top matches in progress? Think BIG readers... regards, The Innovator, Barry Hamer

DID 2002 Australian comedy Crackerjack help boost interest in lawn bowls, treat the sport as a joke or should we, the audience, simply sit back, laugh and not think too deeply about it?For me, the movie was an enjoyable experience that featured some great performances from actors such as Bill Hunter, Samuel Johnson, John Clarke, Frank Wilson and Mick Molloy, who wrote the script with his brother Richard (who also directed the movie).

Yes, it poked some fun at those who love being involved in their “jack high” sport, but it also made no secret in expressing how important sporting clubs are to communities and how passionate members of these clubs are when it comes to their turf and the history that has been developed over many years.

It is now 12 years since the movie was released, but remains an enjoyable part of Australian film history. It is certainly not a masterpiece and I don’t think Australian comedian Mick or Richard attempted to make an all-time classic. What they did accomplish, however, was develop an entertaining script that remained true to the sport and captures the authenticity of a sporting club at a grass-roots level.

Both Mick and Richard conducted what they called a “kerbside crawl” while developing the script and this clearly pays off as it features instances of over regulation, the egos that can clash within a club and what is truly important to small clubs that face dwindling memberships, the battle to attract younger players and looking at ways to reignite interest while remaining true to those who have come before them.

Crackerjack

I’m sure many lawn bowls clubs have faced similar problems and are now constantly looking into the future through new ideas and initiatives.

The movie is based around Jack Simpson (Mick Molloy), who is a fairly slack and unmotivated bloke who seems to revel in scamming the local lawn bowls club for what he considers to be extremely envious car park spaces.

Jack’s grand plan, however, comes crashing down when he meets the Cityside Lawn Bowls Executive – and is forced to either do his bit for the club or face the consequences.

Jack is initially very reluctant to do his fair share, but gradually he becomes a solid (if not spectacular) member of the club who slowly develops a love for the sport of lawn bowls and his club mates.

Things heat up for Jack and his lawn bowling mates when the club not only enters financial difficulty, but also the threat from Bernie Fowl-er – the self-appointed “Pokies King”.It is here that the usual scene of sportsmanship and good will on the greens is replaced with a battle ground mentality that has good fighting evil.

The usually peaceful greens become a battlefield, where young meets old, greed meets good, and people rise to the occasion in extraordinary circumstances.

Crackerjack is an enjoyable experience and hopefully for those of you who love this sport, it was a movie that depicts what is truly important to those who give so much to their clubs. Adam Blom

12 BOWLS PLUS NEW SOUTH WALES OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2014

Changes to the second $100,000 Australian Premier League have been unveiled at the public launchSeptember’s public launch of the second $100,000 Australian Premier League in Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall has provided a glimpse of the changes in store for the ground-breaking competition this year, including the unveiling of the two franchise teams.

Crackerjack star and APL ambassador Mick Molloy officially revealed the new-look competition, which will be staged again at Club Pine Rivers from November 18 to 21, in the heartland of Brisbane’s CBD shopping precinct alongside representatives from each of the eight teams on September 12.

The newly formed Gold Coast Hawks contingent headlined the announcement, declaring their intention to snare the coveted silverware away from cross town rivals Brisbane Gold with the naming of three formidable Club Helensvale-based Australian Jackaroos.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lynsey Clarke and international spearhead Nathan Rice have been selected for berths in the Fox Sports live broadcast event, lining-up in the Hawks’ green and yellow strip alongside world champion Brett Wilkie, who crosses to his

home club-based team after a one-year outing for the Perth Suns, which resulted in a semi-final finish.

Taking Wilkie’s spot in the Bowls WA-based Suns this year will be Tom Mitchell, joining former Northern Irish international turned Australian World Cup winner Jeremy Henry and Western Australian representative Clive Adams from last year’s event.

It’s full steam ahead for the Murray Steamers, based out of the Moama Bowling Club in NSW, after securing the monumental signings of two of the sport’s highest profile international heavy-hitters for their maiden attempt at the competition.

Scotland’s dual 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallist Alex Marshall and Can-ada’s singles silver medallist Ryan Bester, have inked contracts that will see them take to the green for the Murray Steamers, with Moama’s Michael Walker providing a localised element to the border-town team.

Inaugural winners Brisbane Gold’s team structure remains untouched, with world champion Mark Casey showing faith despite the formation and strong connection his Club Helensvale-based Gold Coast Hawks.

Also remaining with the Club Pine Rivers based Gold team are 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Kelvin Kerkow OAM

and Queensland representative Robbie Wild.

The Melbourne Roys outfit also remains unchanged, with Scottish world champion Graeme Archer, 20 year-old Australian Jackaroo Dylan Fisher and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Matthew Flapper again tasked with leading the charge for the Fitzroy Victoria Bowls and Sports Club based contingent.

Despite a bottom of the ladder finish last year, the Sydney Lions are confident National Coach Steve Glasson, current triple world champion Karen Murphy and Bowls Australia’s triple International Bowler of the Year Aron Sherriff can make amends for the Club Mount Lewis team this season.

Adelaide Endurance and the New Zealand Blackjacks have each announced one positional change to their line-ups in an attempt to progress further than their run-ner-up and semi-final finishes respectively.

South Australian representative Simon Dorr joins the Bowls SA-based Adelaide team, replacing Mark Haines, alongside the inaugural tournament’s MVP, Scott Thulborn and Jackaroos world champion Wayne Ruediger, with the new combination hopeful of going one step further this year.

New Zealand international Shannon McIlroy enters the fray for the Blackjacks, replacing

St Johns Park’s 17 year-old Jamie-Lee Worsnop etched her name into the record books after claiming a maiden Australian Indoor Championships crown in late August, becoming the youngest ever winner of the event in either gender.

Meanwhile, in the blockbuster men’s final, it was former English Commonwealth Games gold medallist David Holt, who now also calls Sydney’s St Johns Park home, that prevailed to claim his second Australian title after a string of indoor and outdoor trophies abroad.

The $30,000 event boasts a rich history, dating back to 1988 in the men’s field and 2003 in the women, but it was an up-and-coming rising star who prevailed over an international veteran in the women’s final decider to secure a unique slice of history and the $6,000 winner’s cheque that accompanies the national title.

Worsnop took a couple ends to adjust to the conditions of the Tweed Heads televised show rink, dropping a shot on the first two ends to former Scottish International Kay Moran, before posting scores on the next five consecutive ends to blast away to an 8-2 lead, and mitigated the damage on the penultimate and final end to secure a 8-5 first set.

The pint sized international heavyweight and the straight-faced promising young-gun traded blows over the second set, with just a one shot margin in Worsnop’s favour after the penultimate end.

Having claimed the first set, Worsnop could afford to give up one shot, but no more, on the last end to tie the set and clinch a one-and-a-half set victory, but found herself down 2 shots with just final bullet to be fired.

Tony Grantham, while recently crowned Commonwealth Games singles champion Jo Edwards and master blaster Ali Forsyth return to the fold.

Collectively, six Commonwealth Games gold medallists and 12 world champions will take part in the $100,000 APL02 event.

The Australian Premier League will be shown live on Fox Sports nationally and SkyTV in New Zealand each night of the November 18 to 21 competition, from 5.00pm-10.00pm AEST, while free entry and rink-side deck viewing will be on offer at Brisbane’s Club Pine Rivers.

Taking it in her stride, she delivered a clutch drive that ricocheted off the shot bowl and knocked out Moran’s second shot to secure her first senior national title with a tied second set, 8-all.

“It was such a close game the whole waythrough,” Worsnop said after prevailing.

“Every player here is amazing so I was stoked to even get this far.

“To make it up here through the qualifying was a great achievement in itself, but it’s something special to win in at 17.”

In the men’s final decider, it was also a New South Welshmen that was left holding the silverware, with Holt prevailing over 2010 event winner, and Australian Jackaroos vice-captain, Brett Wilkie, 9-6, 4-7, 2-1.

Holt, who moved from England to Australia in 2002, earned his second national title in 10 months, coincidentally the only two that come with automatic entry into a world event to represent Australia.

“When I came to Australia 12 years ago, I actually thought the Aussie Indoor would be my cup of tea because I played a lot of indoor and actually managed an indoor club, but I guess its taken my quite a while to achieve it,” Holt said after his win.

“The highlight of my year was supposed to be the World Champion of Champions in Christchurch”.

We all have individual differences in own optimal level of anxiety that leads to best performance. If our pre performance anxiety is too high or too low, performance will deteriorate.

I could fill this article with relaxation exercises, breathing techniques, yoga and positive self talk, all very helpful and important techniques to combat nerves and anxiety. I believe they can only help if we are also very well prepared in all four performance areas, Physical, Technical, Mental and Tactical.

The better prepared we are in all

performance areas the more relaxed we will be before and during a match.

To train our Butterflies we first need to train ourselves. How many of us bowlers are training, practising or being coached in all four areas of performance?Lawn Bowls is considered to be a closed target sport similar to archery, golf and shooting, that is played not only individually as in singles but also as a team. Bowls is a game of skill that requires whole body movement by stepping into a forward lunge to allow the bowling arm to perform an underarm throwing action to propel the bowl along the ground towards the target. A bowling athlete needs to be able to hit the target consistently over an extend-ed period of time.

Before we start training our Butterflies, we first need to consider some basic requirements:• Careful selection of equipment, e.g. Correct bowl size and weight, to match hand size and muscular strength. The greens you mostly play on are to be considered if possible. It also aids correct technique.• Good technique that maximizes efficiency of movement to minimize fatigue and injury.• Sound preparation: including general fitness, good nutrition. Warm up and stretching before and after a game. This improves

range of motion and helps prevent injury.• Environmental awareness. e.g. Sun-smart, nutri-

tion and hydration.

Why Physical, Technical, Mental and Tactical?

The inter-relationship between all these training factors requires them to be considered separately as well as in conjunction with each other. The performance in one will affect all others to some degree.

Physical training will prepare the bowler for the consistent performance of the action required to bowl over extended periods of time. To achieve this, the athlete will need: • aerobic fitness and endurance• flexibility in lower body, bowling arm, wrist and shoulder• muscular strength, endurance and power• core stability, strength and balance• sun smart habits with good nutrition and hydration Technical training is to develop and perfect technique. Work on basic and advanced skills. In

bowls these include the draw shot, conversion, controlled weight shot, and the drive.

Mental skills are of utmost importance in a closed target sport like lawn bowls. Here we develop concentration skills, visualization, and focus. We work on relaxation skills, positive self talk and breathing exercises.

Tactical training will prepare the athlete for game situations to out play their opponents. This is achieved through game simulation exercises, shot selection, including individual and team strategies. Game plans.

Next time you are watching any high standard match, preferably of elite bowlers, take the time to observe the players.• Are they focused and concentrated on the right thing at the right time?• Do they control their emotions most of the time?• Do they display low anxiety and appear composed under pressure?• Are they self disciplined?

More often than not the answer to the above four questions will be yes. Then ask yourself. How did they achieve this level of control and confidence?

‘Anxiety is one key factor in sports performance, which can affect or influence all elements of our performance. If your bowls performance is low due to anxiety, {out of control Butterflies} ask yourself: Am I well prepared in all four performance elements?’

Australian Open entries now open!

Australia has been given a further chance to strike gold at the World Junior Championships on the Gold Coast in November.

Having already confirmed the line-ups for the Under-25 international event last April, the National Selection Panel has recently advised that Bolivia Millerick will fill a positional vacancy at the inaugural tournament, partnering with Japan’s Tomoyuki Tamachi in the mixed pairs.

Millerick, an Australia A squad member based out of Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, is a natural choice, according to National Coach Steve Glasson.

“I’m delighted to confirm Bolivia as Australia’s ‘extra player’ for the World Junior Championships,” Glasson said.

“She fits all the criteria and the exposure and experience she will get out of an event of this magnitude will be priceless.”

Pulling on the green and gold guernsey for Australia will be the sport’s youngest Australian Jackaroos representative, the APL’s Melbourne Roys’ spearhead Dylan Fisher, Bowls Australia’s 2013 Under-18 Male Bowler of the Year Sean Ingham, who boasts a home-ground advantage, National Champion of Champion pairs runner-up Kristina Krstic and reigning Under-18 Female Bowler of the Year Chloe Stewart.

Each player boasts a chance to walk away with two gold medals from the event, with all four taking to the green in the boys’ and girls’ singles, while Stewart and Fisher, and Krstic and Ingham will partner for the mixed pairs competition.

The World Junior Cup will be staged at Broadbeach Bowls Club from November 10 to 16.

Attitude • All about practicing habits; your attitude level, and mine as coach, will determine your/ our success

Bend• Bend and extend are two words to utter to players to ensure smooth deliveries;

Commitment• I see in those who choose to do the extra yards without anyone else even asking;

Decision making• You can have the best forehand draw delivery in the world, but if it is not the priority option, and you choose it, then your decision making skill is inadequate; coach the players how best to decide;

Experience• You do not have to like this comment but it is a straight steal from Rick Charlesworth, that great national hockey coach with Olympic and world gold medals to boot… experience is overrated, it is how quickly you learn, not how many games you played;

Fun • Although passionate in my coaching, I also want to enjoy it so lets ensure from day one we enjoy, we have fun; everyone tries, no one dies; apply this word FUNdamental

Feedback • Let’s agree we all have biases; you don’t have to like me, I don’t have to like you , but… I want you to have an accurate, reasonably immediate feedback system; we can do it in a game with my game segments approach; we certainly do it after a game as a review of performance; if you want to improve and I want you to improve, you must have a realistic view of what your skill and performance is now, TODAY, not yesterday, not tomorrow; and you need to feel comfortable in also giving me feedback be it good, bad or indifferent;

Glamour• Never won gold; grit and goals win gold;

Goals • I know what I want to achieve as coach and wrote them down on paper; I can only assist you if you set your own goals, then as a squad set the squad goals; I see this as your top priority; of interest/ importance is whether you and I have overlapping goals;

Game plan• Fail to plan, plan to fail; each of us in a team has to know our role, our plan as a unit

Game simulation training• I want to have you reproduce your excellent

training on the battlefield; and the way we do that is focus on the game through simulated game training to hone your tactical and mental skill; it is not pressure, it is a challenge so enjoy it

Guarantees• I cannot guarantee success; I believe in my approach and am totally committed to (enjoying) success with you because like you I want to be the best (coach) I can possibly be

Honesty • I will be upfront in my dealings with each and every one of you, and in doing that I also acknowledge that means giving news that some wont like and at times being wrong; in that case I shall acknowledge my errors; I expect the same honesty from every one of you

Inspiration • Inspiration is brief and short lived and only helps to kick start the process

Individuals • I see my role as accommodating all individuals and merging them into team; I have to coach individual people who make up a team; it requires a recognition that you are / will be different; I may do that well I may be abysmal, but I will be trying my best; we are a team sink or swim, however in my mind each member is the equal (worth) of any other member

Improvement continuum• In any elite sport, bowls is no exception, if you do what you did last time, last year, then don’t be surprised to not winning; why? because someone else, some other team, has used your previous success and added to it to be better; as coach I need to be constantly looking to improve you and improvement requires change

Leadership • Yours not mine; this is important; I want the squad to set your direction; successful teams always have a strong leadership group within the team who want to take ownership over the processes of the team;

Lifestyle • Bowls can take over your life and it can be a downer if we/ you don’t win; so keep the game in a sense of balance; I coach people, who are termed bowlers, who enjoy the rigours and success gained from elite bowls;

Measures • Objective measures are the only measures; mat length measures are tools; we will have skill ratings, we will have peer discussions, we will have game objectives, we will have selectors appraisals; all of these are tools to give you an idea of current progress or performance

Motivation • Motivation is within you, not me, as you decide the importance of your goal; motivation provides for the required perse-verance; as coach I need motivated bowlers to succeed as it is only then that I can assist you to achieve

More • We won’t do mindless drills, repetitive skill measures, numerous reports (I can do that) or excessive and unnecessary exercise; but, you should not compete in numerous sub-standard events; get up and realize you are elite, not turkeys;

Plans • Planning is the key to success; Dave Parkin maintained it was in an hours ratio of about 3 plan 2 prepare, 1 perform, and, I always operate on a variation of that

Ritual• The vital one is having a pre-delivery routine riveted into your mind;

Roles in teams• I ensure every player knows his (measured) role in the team position, and skills set to perform for the team; train the players with that in mind;

Situation awareness• Skips, or singles players, having the skill to be constantly switched on to patterns of play in the competition, where sometimes we are doing it all well, other times they come into the game, and when to know any one player has shifted their performance level, either way, and to alter the game in accord;

Team • The winning team has members who want to make the extra effort for their team; what I will do with and for you is create the best training and competitive team environment that has/ attracts the people willing to do extra for the winning team

Think• Thinking, or hardly thinking; an acronym to consider, TCUP which is…think carefully under pressure

Us• No one, not one of us, is as good as all of us;

Values• Great teams have values, most bowls team and clubs have not sought to nurture values

Winners• Winners know how to win and expect to win in the knowledge they have trained to prepare for the level of competition Lachlan Tighe, 2014

Newport Bowling Club is situated in Palm Road at the bottom of Newport Hill in the centre of Spurway Park and just a few minutes’ walk to Newport Beach. The Club incorporates the Newport Bowling Club for men and the Newport Beach Women’s Bowling Club.

We have an attractive, comfortable club house, with a deck overlooking our three greens where members and visitors can sit and watch the bowls or enjoy a drink of an afternoon or evening.

The Club is now in its 76th year and enjoys a membership comprising 200 men and women bowlers and owes its success to the practice of men and women playing bowls matches on the same days (Wednesday and Saturdays). This makes for a wonderful and friendly atmosphere and we all gather together at the end of the bowls day to have a drink and a chat.

Newport is very active in playing in District Men’s and Women’s Pennants bowls with the number of men participating being about 40 and a similar number for the women. Our women’s No. 2 pennant team won their Pennant this year and our men were runners-up in their mid-week triples. The Club holds a number of Gala days during the year and regularly holds mixed bowls competitions, great fun for the players and a lot of friendly rivalry ensues.

Barefoot Bowls are an important part of our club and many families, local people and business organisations enjoy playing on long summer afternoons. Barefoot Bowls can be played on any Friday afternoon from 4.00 p.m. As the name implies, you can bowl barefoot and the dress is casual. It’s social; it’s fun; you don’t need to have bowled before; you can have a drink while you do it; we will show you how to do it and we supply the bowls!

Have fun and play Barefoot Bowls for your next Corporate Function! It is a game for all ages and is suitable for businesses, clubs or even private groups. You can discuss your catering needs with us as well, a barbeque at the end of the day can help round out the event.

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.”

Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross.”

The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada. The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off ” to “Let’s get the Bastards.” They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years. The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide.” The only two higher levels in France are “Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France‘s white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the coun-try’s military capability. Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and Excitedly” to “Elaborate Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain: “Ineffective

There has to be some light-heartedness in view of the current global terrorism situation, and who better to shine it than... John Cleese?

Combat Operations” and “Change Sides.”

The Germans have increased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance ”to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose.”

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia , meanwhile, has raised its security level from “No worries” to “She’ll be right, Mate.” Two more escalation levels remain: “Crikey! I think we’ll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!” and “The barbie is cancelled.”

So far no situation has ever warranted use of the last final escalation level. Regards,John Cleese,British writer, actor and tall person

A team, invited at almost the last minute from St Johns Park Bowling Club, won the recent Double Bay Women’s Club’s $10,000 10th Invitation Triples.

St Johns Park players have an outstanding record in the event, with its trio of Australian-ranked Sharyn Renshaw, Anne Johns and Kelsey Cottrell this year aiming for a winning hat-trick.

Instead, the team of Joanne Wai-Wai, Maria Georgi and Jo Worsley took the $3300 first prize with a score of 12 points plus a 52-shot margin, while the top-listed Kelsey Cottrell

trio of Marianne Parcell (replacing Renshaw) had to be content with fourth place ($750) after scoring 11 points +40 shots.

The winners replaced a team from Shellharbour BC which withdrew two weeks prior to the tournament.

In Second place ($2550), just one shot off first place, was the composite team of Judy King and Margaret Smith (Everglades BC) and Corinne Crouch (St Johns Park) the same combination which was last year’s runners-up. Third spot ($1800) went to the Ashfield representatives Beverley Pendleton, Meivat Teinaki and Maelene Mihaere with 12 points +31.

The top three teams each lost one of their seven matches and only the shot aggregates decided the final placings.

As well as inviting the regular high profile play-ers, organisers this year opened the event to a number of young and talented lawn bowlers.Officials were not disappointed when one of the major acceptances came from twin 18-year-olds, Natalie and Samantha Noronha, from the Warilla Club, who teamed with another top-rated junior, Sarah Hillyer, a NSW under-25 representative, who also plays out of the St Johns Park Club.

The Noronha twins are Australian Under-18 representatives, while Natalie has also been capped for the Australian Under-25 squad. They finished in seventh spot in the Invitation Triples after winning four of their seven games.

The tournament’s major sponsor, Jenifer Bailey, presented the prizes to the three top teams and announced she would be the major sponsor again for the 2015 event.

I received a call last week from a mate who decided he wanted to head down to the local lawn bowls club. My first reply was why? His answer was simple – cheap beer and a chance to have some fun on the greens.

Despite the pulling power of a few quiet frothies that won’t burn a hole in the cash I set aside for my mortgage repayment, I still wasn’t convinced. But I decided to give this lawn bowl thing a go. And, as I reasoned with myself I came to this conclusion – how hard could lawn bowls be? I mean, I’ve seen men and women play it for years and I even sat and watched it a few times on television, there’s nothing to it.

And as my grandfather once told me – “bowls is simple game, it has just been stuffed up by experts and pen pushers who have never played the sport”. As I saw it, I’m in my early 30s and I’ll be sharing the greens with retirees enjoying a quiet life and some players nearly double my age. It will be a walk in the park.

I could picture the accolades flowing from the moment I set foot in the clubhouse and the compliments ringing in my ears – “you’re a natural”, “if only I had your skill and modesty” and the big one - “if you were here 30 years ago I would have married you”.

Look, a part of me understood that these comments would all be right on money and I have certainly heard them all many times before, but I still wanted to pay my dues and respect this great sport.

So as I met my mate on rink 4. I was ready to knock back the national selectors. I had already worked on my signature “sorry to disappoint but I’m remaining an amateur” wave.

We met our playing partners – or should that be opposition – and set about winning our game. It started well enough and I patiently waited my turn to have a roll.

I must admit, I was a tad nervous as I held the bowl in my hands and slowly worked out my game plan, but as you may have already guessed, I didn’t lack confidence… that was until I let go of the bowl. From this moment on, I became a complete mess. The bowl went massively left like a shocking hook on a golfers swing.

The bowl passed through rink 5, stopped and had a sandwich and a drink on rink 6 and then totally interfered with the game on rink 7 by winking at the pretty woman in the pink top and skirt. Thankfully there was no rink 8!

What had happened? I tried to put the blame on my opponent, but he was the club president. That wasn’t my best decision of the day. I then turned and took the club microphone to plead my case.

“I don’t mean to alarm the club members, but the bowling green is clearly leaning heavily to the left – I think we need to get on to the council about this.”Before I could continue a little old lady with thick

glasses came up to me, smiled and then whacked me with her bowls bag!

The ladies president then approached and recommended that I leave the premises immediately. The bar manager locked the clubhouse doors and gave me an unpleasant finger gesture and even the former green keeper, who now spent his time cleaning the shoes of the club’s executive team, shook his head in disgust.

I looked to my mate in my moment of need. He had already left the club and I clearly saw his car make a sharp right on the way out of town.I was alone. I needed some help. It didn’t arrive.

As I packed up my bag and then slowly walked home I thought about how I could have done things better. Then I received a call from a club member. It was good to hear his friendly voice. “I don’t think lawn bowls is for you,” he said. “We have had an emergency committee meeting and we’ve decided you’re banned for life”.

So that was it – my lawn bowls career done and dusted in one day. I’m convinced that the majority of the readers of this article don’t want to believe that I will be lost to the sport forever.

Thankfully, there is no need to worry folks, as since this event unfolded I have been offered a position on a new governing board looking at ways to improve the sport. This should be fun. Adam Blom

20 BOWLS PLUS NEW SOUTH WALES OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2014

With the Commonwealth Games just completed, how many of our social bowlers know who competed or know the final results? A quick poll of a few bowlers in two clubs indicated that very few actually knew who were in the team, (women polled better than men), although some had a vague idea of who “might” have been selected, and none actually knew the results.

Is this surprising? I don’t think so.

Although bowls magazines provide plenty of publicity, the fact is that most social bowlers just aren’t interested. We only have to look at venues where top open competitions such as State Open championships are held. Sure there is a reasonable group of spectators, but if social bowls are also available at that venue you’ll find the greens are packed with bowlers who just don’t have any interest in watching our best perform.

Who are they and what did they do?Why? Obviously, there is no “connection” between the elite and the rest. And there are a couple of reasons for this.

First of all, the elite bowlers tend to be concentrated in a few of clubs in each state so most bowlers never actually get to see them let alone meet them on the green. So while they may be promoted in the magazine, they are virtually invisible otherwise to the vast majority of bowlers.

Can this be overcome? This is a difficult question to answer.

Unlike the major sports such as football, the funding of lawn bowls representatives is largely “bottom up”. That is to say, a very large part of their allowances and expenses comes from the capitation fees paid by every bowler including the thousands of social bowlers who never even get to see their contribution in action.

Do our representatives even know this, or, if they do, do they feel any gratitude or any obligation to “repay” their benefactors by being more sociable and inclusive, perhaps even

playing the occasional social game at other clubs? Can they afford to do this since they may also have to make a living, look after family and practice to keep up their skill as well as represent their club, compete in championships and attend the many coaching, selection and (hopefully) representative matches that are held?

Is it possible for State Administrations to somehow ensure that members of this relatively small group of bowlers do in fact appear (and play), at clubs throughout the state? Imagine the interest if the state squad spent the morning training and then were included on the sheet for social bowls, (open draw, not contrived by officials), at your local club in the afternoon.

Is it worth considering?

Surely the sport can only get better if some way is found to raise its profile and surely the first step is to increase the interest among our own members.

Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Panels are usually found on the roofs of homes and businesses. The panels harness the sun’s energy to generate zero emission electricity. Light energy is converted directly into electricity by transferring photon energy into electrical energy. The conversion takes place within cells of specially fabricated semiconductor crystals.

While it might be true that solar cannot generate electricity all the time, it does generate electricity when it is needed most - during peak demand hours of the day, such as hot, periods when we all run air-conditioners. Having solar panels is like having a mini power station on your roof. PV electricity is generated at the point of demand - where people live and work, which means there is no need to transfer the energy long distances across expensive infrastructure

Having been involved in coaching at the highest level for the best part of 20 years, Dobbins said he felt the time was right to make the difficult decision to retire, with the best interest of the sport at heart.

“I know I will miss the challenge of being directly involved with our current and future Australian representatives, however I feel at this time, it is the right move,” Dobbins said.

“This decision has been made in the best interest of the sport, and not for me personally, but to assist in ensuring viability for the High Performance program and succession planning for the future.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish all at Bowls Austral-ia every success in the future and look forward to witnessing continued success on

Assistant National Coach Robbie Dobbins has announced his retirement from coaching after an illustrious career

Assistant National Coach Robbie Dobbins has announced his decision to retire from the Bowls Australia High Performance team, calling an end to a illustrious career that included steering the reins as coach of four national teams over the past two decades.

Dobbins, who has been second-in-charge of the sport’s high performance tiers since 2011, played an instrumental role in the Australian Jackaroos on-green success at the 2012 World Championships in Adelaide, where the nation secured five gold and two silver medals from eight disciplines - the greatest result ever produced by any nation at the event - and most recently contributed to the green and gold contingent’s four medal result from the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Dobbins steps down from coaching after two decades and four national teams

the bowling greens for all Australian teams.”

While handpicked for his current role almost four years ago by National Coach Steve Glas-son, to help shape the future of the sport on the world stage, Dobbins’ involvement with the Bowls Australia HP team dates back almost three decades, following a brief but spectacular playing career.

Selection for his international debut in 1982 proved to be a masterstroke, with his second appearance resulting in the nation’s historic first gold medal in any discipline from a Commonwealth Games, in the men’s fours on home soil in Brisbane, before a serious work accident in the coal mines put a premature holt on his career after 25 appearances.

Dobbins’ affinity for coaching began with a role as national selector in 1985, with the aim to give back to the sport that had provided him with so much enjoyment, which lead to being appointed as the nation’s first head coach of both the national men’s and women’s teams from 1994 to 1996.

The breadth of his contribution to the sport spanned much wider than just our shores though, with Dobbins playing a pivotal role in guiding Malaysia to the powerhouse status it holds today by becoming their first national coach in 1997-98, which included the 1998 Commonwealth Games, before returning home to take the control of the Australian women’s team from 2001 to 2003.

Dobbins again took the helm of the complete Australian outfit in 2004, a year that saw Glasson become the nation’s first world outdoor singles champion, before a stint as coach of Thailand in 2007 followed with a role coaching his fourth country at a national level, as the technical coach of Scotland in 2010.

Glasson said that his fellow Bowls Australia Hall of Fame member made an enormous impact on the sport across the globe during his coaching tenure.

A retiring boss wanted everyone to express their good feeling about him by writing on the farewell card on his farewell party.

He could then remember how his staff “missed” him. Most staff members were writing standard phrases like, “Without you, the company will never be the same,” “We will always remember you,” etc. The boss was not satisfied and asked, “I need something from the bottom of your heart... Peter, you have been working with me for the last 40 years. You are my best staff. What do you have to say?” Slowly but firmly, Peter wrote, “The best news in 40 years.”

CHANGING TIMES AT LINDFIELD COULD OPEN DOORS

Lindfield Bowling Club, once the pride of the North Shore has found itself in the unenviable position of being asset rich and member poor. Gone are the days when other clubs feared the arrival of the Lindfield Ones Team comprising of numerous State players backed by Pennant Teams in every grade and a waiting list for membership.

How a past successful club finds itself in this position is a matter of conjecture. Complacency, failing to address the ever increasing average membership age and declining numbers, lack of continuity through changing board personnel, personal agendas all would have played a role. Over riding all of this is failing to move with the times. Clubs used to be local, members were buddies and families proud of their patch, the clubs offered social services as well as a bowling environment and poker machines ruled the waves. Now we have the breathalyzer, rising poker machine tax, smoking restrictions,

club memberships in golf, bowls and tennis in the Sydney region in decline at the same time as there is more competition for ones time. People drive out of their locality to chose their club so why wouldn’t they go to the club that offers the best competition, services and amenities. The bigger and more progressive clubs in Sydney still flourish, be it that it takes an effort whilst smaller clubs barely survive or have not survived.

In Lindfield we have experienced much of the above, the club focus has been on the bowling environment. Social services and activities are now

minimal and as membership has dwindled the death knell has started to kick in and not unlike other clubs have then suffered a sudden membership decline. This decline has been followed by others leaving to seek greener pastures or better quality games. It needs to be said that many of our past membership have put in significant personal exertion with membership drive initiatives in an effort to boost numbers only to be disappointed with the response. We have tried the concept of bring a friend concluding that our members either don’t have any or their friends must already be members. Our bottom line is organic growth will not occur unless we can increase our base membership.

In an effort to boost members and fill our greens Lindfield recently advertised in the August magazine for clubs who may have an interest in utilizing the Lindfield facilities either casually, permanently by relocation or merger or in some other way. Such considerations are subject to discussion at this time. This opportu-nity is still open to any club to pursue and the invitation for expressions of interest can be found on the Lindfield web site.

An opportunity that the club has not vigorously pursued to date is an

arrangement with any of the large country clubs who may wish to have or the use of a Sydney bowling base. Such an arrangement could allow them to host games against strong Sydney clubs, use Lindfield as a feeder development club or host Sydney based players who may be members of or represent their club. The same opportunity is open to any of the larger Sydney clubs who may wish likewise to have a bowling base on the North Shore or may wish to use the Lindfield greens on a casual basis due to the limited capacity of their own club relative to membership numbers.

As at this time Lindfield still soldiers on, the club is still financially sound and continues to maintain its three excellent greens. The members enjoys local competition, the camaraderie is high and the club enjoys the support of over 300 bridge players who use the club 6 days a week.

However, being realistic and looking to the future, if our bowling club green usage does not improve as a result of our current expression of interest the opportunity for other clubs to take advantage of the Lindfield facility will no longer be available as the Lindfield Bowling Club looks to alternative options.

Back before the “bowl revolution”, on particularly slow greens players would often disparagingly remark that play was “more like a game of skittles”.

But the “grass” on those occasions was very similar to the draw of a modern bowl on a reasonably paced green. Indeed, on a very slow green modern bowls take almost no grass at all.

Of course, Lawn Bowls is not the only sport that has been changed by technology. Golf clubs have a bigger head, tennis racquets are larger with a bigger “sweet spot”, shooting has been revolutionised with different grips, stocks and sights and even running has been affected

Was Lawn Bowls a better game when we all played with “wide” bowls?by having improved footwear. There are probably other examples as well.

So it is fair to say that although better proponents will generally win, modernised equipment has reduced the level of skill required to achieve a given result. A poor shot in tennis becomes a good shot because of the larger sweet spot. A poor draw shot gives a reasonable result because it is more likely to contact a bowl already in the head and “luck” plays a bigger part in the game.

That is the “downside” of improved technology (or changing equipment rules). The upside, of course is that more participants (including the less skilful), are able to achieve reasonable results and therefore enjoy the game more.

So, should we, in the case of Lawn Bowls, have two standards; one for play up to a certain level (say club championships), and another for higher competition?

Golf can solve the problem by manipulating scoring and the course itself in accordance with the standard of competition. But since bowling greens cannot be altered, the only other factor affecting performance is the bowl itself.

Isn’t it time that bowls provided a new challenge and increased its appeal to the more competitive sportsmen and women of the world? Could Australia be the world leader in a new and inspired game for champions?

The Gaden Trout Hatchery is located in the Snowy Mountains just outside of the town Jindabyne.

Gaden Trout Hatchery is one of Australia’s main centres for breeding and rearing cold water sport fish including salmon and trout. Hatchery breeding is necessary to supplement natural breeding fish populations and ensure premier recreational fisheries are maintained across the state.

There are tours run daily at the hatchery at the times of 10am and 2pm. There are also group bookings taken at any time between 8am and 4pm daily, seven days a week.

We produce fish each year and release them out into waterways. We have released more than 9.5 million fish in the last five years. From May to September each year, brown and rainbow trout swim upstream from Lake Jindabyne into the Thredbo River on their annual spawning run, where they search for gravel beds in which they lay their eggs.

The spawning fish are trapped in a purpose built trap and are separated into males and females. The female fish is lightly anaesthetised, and her eggs and roe gently removed. The male’s fish

TOUR THE GADEN HATCHERY

is then gently stripped of his milt, which is mixed with the eggs in a bowl, and water is added. The stripped fish are later released back into the river, unharmed. The eggs are then left for 6-8 weeks to develop into a fully formed fish.

In November and December, the fish (or fry) are now about three centimetres long, are ready for release into streams and impoundment’s.

Tucked away in Larkhall are two clubs that ooze hospitality and friendship as well as competitive bowling. Picturesque walled lush green grounds and warm club houses with ample supplies of “pints” to quench thirsts and make any game excellent are joys to visit.

Larkhall Bowling Club was established in 1868 whereas the newcomer was established in 1928; first as Larkhall Miners Welfare Bowling Club closing in late 1981 with the destruction of the mining industry and reopening in April 1982 as Raploch Bowling Club with assistance from a community sporting grant. Both clubs rely on hard working members to maintain the greens and facilities.

With the cold winters in Scotland the bowls season runs from April to October. On the 19th of April this year Raploch BC continued the tradition of having the wife of the gents president, Robert Grant, roll the first jack and bowl for the season. This year Annette Grant had this honour. For fashion comparison you can see the difference between the fur bestoled opening in 1923 and the smart attractive attire of 2014.

Playing Bowls in Larkhall, Lanarkshire

Edition 2 of Scotland and Bowls

A feature of both clubs is the keen interest in playing three bowls triples. This format allows a good spread of social interaction and more bowls per game. Both clubs had full day events while I was visiting.

For Larkhall, the event was the William Hamilton Trophy with teams coming from Lanarkshire and Ayrshire. The day coincided with the Epsom Derby. Format of play was five sets of five ends followed by semi finals and final. Starting early in the day with breakfast interspersed with morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and then dinner the event is brimful of bowls and camaraderie. I was an onlooker dressed in my Gaythorne BC shirt and enjoyed the play and the pints. Maybe I had had a few when at afternoon tea all stopped to watch the Epsom Derby and as the geegees came up the final straight one in particular named “Australia” broke from the pack and streaked to the front and with my roaring support held off the challengers to the finish. Embarrassed? No way! The bowlers took it all in good fun and shouted me another pint. But rain became heavier and it was decided to cut out the semi finals and go straight to the final over deadly two ends with

the top two scoring teams. As it was the top two teams represented Larkhall BC and its neighbour Raploch BC for a home town showdown.

Raploch took a one shot lead on the first final end and then with a tight head Hugh Barnes, skip of Raploch, provided a two shot lead with a blockading head. With one bowl remaining of Larkhall skip, Hugh’s swan dance on the rainy rink was worthy of the Bolshoi Ballet. Larkhall’s skip, Jim Wardlaw, had other ideas. Summoning his cool experience as a past representative bowler of South Africa, with focus and smooth delivery sent his final bowl towards the well defended head, piercing the defence and took a brilliant shot. The onlookers were stunned. With rain terminating play, the trophy was declared a tie.

I sincerely wish to thank Robert Grant of Larkhall BC and John Cuthbertson of Raploch BC who with their members showed such wonderful hospitality and welcomed me warmly. Should you be visiting Scotland you too will find friends at the bowls clubs.

The pace of Anzac events is quickening as the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings approaches – yet it’s still not too late to take part in once-in-a-lifetime event that will let you join fellow Australians at Gallipoli 100 years on.

Anzac events are happening already. In Parramatta, NSW, last weekend, servicemen dressed in full uniform paraded the main street to mark 100 years since the raising of the AIF 1st Light Horse at the outbreak of the First World War.

The first convoy to depart for Egypt and Gallipoli left on 1 November 1914, carrying troops of the Australian Imperial Force and New Zealand Expeditionary Force, later known collectively as the Anzacs.

Next Anzac Day, 15 April 2015, will see the main commemorative event at Gallipoli, on the centenary of the Anzac landings there. Even at this late stage, you can still book an unforgettable Anzac Day cruise/tour that visits Gallipoli and tours the

Dan was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. When he found out he was going to inherit a fortune when his sickly father died, he decided he needed to find a wife with whom to share his fortune. One evening, at an investment meeting, he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away.” I may look like just an ordinary guy,” he said to her, “But in just a few years my father will die and I will inherit $200 million”. Impressed, the woman asked for his business card and three days later, she became his stepmother.

Set as they are, in beautifully landscaped grounds, the diverse displays and exhibitions of the museum indulge the imagination of the visitor. The quaint and the curious - a little country schoolroom, a tiny wooden church and a two-stand shearing shed. The simple cottage of hardwood slabs that was home to the Bradman family in Sir Donald’s infancy, and the memorabilia of showman and boxing promoter, Jimmy Sharman.

The exciting new Temora Ambulance Museum is the result of cooperation between the Ambulance Service and the Rural Museum. More than a score of ambulance vehicles that served the community across the twentieth century provide the centerpiece of an exhibition which explores the many aspects of the development of the ambulance service over the past 120 years.

A major element of Temora’s ‘Bundawarrah Centre’, the Temora Rural Museum shares its site with the Temora Visitor Information Centre, the community’s very active ‘Shed 4 Men’, and the Local and Family History Research Centre. Also on site is ‘Mother Shipton’s’, a venue designed to host small self-catered functions for up to 50 people. Self-serve tea/coffee and locally made slices are always available at ‘Mother Shipton’s, for a very modest charge.

‘The way we were’, the little things we thought we’d forgotten, happily called to mind - that’s the magic of a visit to

the Temora Rural Museum

The museum regularly mounts feature exhibitions from its textiles collection and hosts a busy program of temporary exhibitions by local artists and artisans.

Open every day from 9.30am until 5.00pm, except Christmas and Boxing Days, the Rural Museum invites the casual visitor, caravan camper and coach party to come and explore its outstanding reflection of Australian country life.

Spring is a dangerous time for koalas.

The warmer weather brings with it the urge to move around. In our region that often means a koala spending more time than it should on the ground where it is at risk from cars, dogs and other predators.

The lead up to mating is a time for jostling and fighting for dominance among male koalas which can trigger dispersal of young sub-adult animals. Depending on habitat quality a young male may need to travel kilometres from its birthplace. Koalas can move well over a kilometre during the course of a night. At this time of the year they commonly move during daylight hours as well.

Road strike is one of the major causes of death or serious injury of koalas. The seasonal spike in injuries and mortalities at this time of the year is particularly worrying because mothers are slowed down by back-young; thus a road-hit can involve two animals.

The premature death of a breeding female in our dwindling koala populations is a calamity; the loss of a back-young as well, with its breeding life ahead of it could spell disaster. A 2% drop in koala numbers can be sufficient to tip the balance towards local extinction.

Koalas are largely nocturnal so night–time, between dusk and dawn, is especially dangerous for them. We ask motorists to drive slowly and carefully, observing koala signage and keeping to the speed limits. Many roads transect koala habitat; roadside visibility can be poor, animals appear to come out of nowhere and are often difficult to avoid; indeed it is not uncommon for a koala to be hit by more than one vehicle. Nor is it uncommon for an incident to be reported by a motorist coming up behind. Should the worst happen and you hit a koala or you observe an animal that has been hit, please stop and check its state. We encourage motorists to carry a blanket or box in their car, for such an eventuality in order to contain the animal and remove it from the road. Stopping on any road needs careful consideration as does handling a wild koala (a swipe of those sharp claws can be damaging).

Be prepared. Have the rescue number of your local koala rescue group listed in your mobile phone and report any koala in trouble immediately.

In Tweed, Friends of the Koala operates a 24/7 Rescue Hotline: (02) 6622 1233. For information about koalas, their food trees, and other ways in which you can assist the koala conservation effort on the Northern Rivers, visit: www.friendsofthekoala.org or email [email protected] You can also follow us on Facebook.

FIGHT OSTEOARTHRITIS INFLAMMATION

with superior CURCUMIN extractYou might know turmeric as the bright yellow spice that adds colour to curries but it also has a surprising health benefit!

The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, has powerful anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce the joint pain and swelling of osteoarthritis. The trouble is, curcumin alone is poorly absorbed by the body.

Curcumin Anti-Inflammatory Pain Reliever from Australian NaturalCare contains the superior Meriva curcumin extract which is made using a unique technology to combine the curcumin with phospholipids. Phospholipids act like little ‘delivery trucks’ for the curcumin, which means it is absorbed twice as fast and up to 29 times better than curcumin alone.

In recent clinical trials* people with osteoarthritis who took the Meriva curcumin extract, found they could walk over twice as far on a treadmill test as those who took a standard extract. They also reported that it was significantly easier to go about their daily lives compared to those who received the standard treatment.

When a New Zealand woman devised a means of relieving her husband’s severe arthritic pain, stiff joints and swollen ankles, she did not anticipate the demand that would ensue for her Aircycle. The inflatable exerciser, allowed her husband to exercise his finger, ankle, knee and hip joints while sitting down. So effective was it, that an arthritis educator requested they be made for others.

Jenny Watson agreed to manufacture the Aircycle but the small retirement job quickly assumed larger proportions. A hospital registered it with Medsafe to use in podiatry and diabetes clinic. Physiotherapists and rest homes applauded the results.

The gentle exercise resulted in improved circulation in hands and feet – beneficial for foot problems and painful fingers. People reported

swelling in ankles and night cramps had gone. Leg muscles had strengthened, they had better balance and could walk further. Joint and sciatic pain had eased.

“I loved hearing amazing stories from grateful people.” Jenny says. “A man who couldn’t walk far without his feet going numb, said before long he could walk round the block. Within a fortnight, he got to the shops and back. To his delight, within a month he could walk to the pub!” One foot shape is inflated. While sitting, the feet push air from side to side, working muscles and joints from lower back and hips down to the feet, gently encouraging blood flow and natural movement. People use the Aircycle while watching TV, in the office and sitting in a car or plane.

It’s so easy!

With a lifetime guarantee, at $29.90 it is an affordable circulation booster. Post $34.90 (p&p included) to Aircycle, PO Box 148, Wynnum, Qld 4178. Information and orders: www.aircycle.co.nz or call 0412 329 450. Jenny donates $1 from each order to Arthritis Australia.

Curcumin is widely available in supplement form, but many products on the market contain a type of curcumin that is not absorbed very well by the body.

New Curcumin Anti-Inflammatory Pain Reliever from Australian NaturalCare contains Meriva curcumin which is made using a patented technology to combine the curcumin with phospholipids.

Phospholipids act like little ‘delivery trucks’ for the curcumin, boosting its bioavailability and dramatically improving its absorption into the bloodstream. That means there’s more of the active ingredient available and it can get to work against inflammation and pain faster.

Clinical trials have shown that Meriva curcumin is absorbed twice as fast

This allows the clients to remain in their own homes as the service helps to convert gardens to low maintenance, ensuring that the garden areas are safe and enjoyable.

Our organisation primarily relies on the volunteers who sign up to garden either 1 day a week or fortnight. Easy Care Gardening recruits and trains new volunteers and also provides ongoing training. Gardening is done Monday to Saturday.

Some of Our Aims• To support frail, aged pensioners, carers, and people on a disability support pension by helping them maintain their independence.• To recruit and train volunteers in the techniques used in providing the service.• To work in close liaison with other community service organisations.

At present we have over 800 households that we visit. However we really need more volunteers as numbers of clients continue to grow. Staff oversee the administration of garden visits, team schedules, communication and payments.

Our volunteers are covered by insurance and protected by our occupation health and safety rules. There is no need to be an expert, and volunteers only need to be active and motivated.

Easy Care Gardening Inc. is a non-profit charitable organisation financed in part by a grant from the Department of Social Services through the Home and Community Care Program. Donations from Ku-ring-gai, Hornsby, Ryde and Hunters Hill Councils, as well as donations from community groups, businesses and private individuals also help fund our work.

Easy Care Gardening Inc (ECG) provides a subsidised gardening service to frail, aged pensioners, carers, and people on a disability support pension within the Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai, Ryde and Hunters Hill areas by teams of willing volunteers.

Terry Davis enjoyed a drink with his friends after work, but as his hearing deteriorated, his favourite pastime became too hard and he was increasingly isolated. Now the retired Telstra technician from Sunbury in Victoria has been able to turn his world around since becoming a bilateral cochlear implant recipient, allowing him to be an active participant in his personal and social life, rather than a mere bystander. “I was becoming a recluse and having two cochlear implants helped me be part of social groups again, to hear music, the rain falling, and even my dog’s nails clicking on the floor boards at home,” says Terry.Terry had noise induced hearing loss from years of working on telephone exchanges – and his is not an isolated case.

“Noise is a leading cause of hearing loss; however it can be avoided,” says a leading Australian hearing and speech expert, Professor Richard Dowell. “But unless Australians become more aware of what constitutes a dangerous noise level, and how they can protect themselves, exposure to everyday nois-es, not age, will be the leading cause of hearing loss in the near future.”

According to the 2014 Cochlear Newspoll survey, while one in two adults aged 18-64 say they think about the impact an activity can have on their hearing, less than a quarter believe their hearing is being adversely affected by the activities they do.

“No matter how seldom you participate in a [noisy] activity, there is still the very real possibility that it is causing you permanent damage, so you should always take steps to protect your hearing,” says Professor Dowell.

Here are some tips to help protect your hearing: • Avoid exposure to loud noises• Wear hearing protection when mowing the lawn or using other noisy equipment • Use noise-cancelling earplugs when travelling on trains or planes• Cover your ears when emergency vehicles pass in the street• Get a hearing test!

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness and severe vision loss in Australia, with one in seven Australians over the age of 50 showing some evidence of the disease.

Early detection is the key according to Julie Heraghty, CEO of the Macular Disease Foundation Australia. “Macular degeneration is a disease which occurs at the back of the eye and affects central vision. It is essential to have an eye test and macula check, as you can have macular degeneration without even knowing. It is also critical that you never ignore any changes in vision and seek help immediately,” said Julie.

Eighty two year old Jill Falls knows how important early detection can be. “I was at work when I had the first indication my sight was playing up. I was 78 at the time and noticed the lines on the page were wonky. As I have a family history of macular degeneration I knew I had to have my eyes checked immediately. I was diagnosed with the wet form of macular degeneration,” said Jill.

Fortunately, there is a treatment for wet macular degeneration. Jill

Currently, a team at the University of Sydney’s Brain & Mind Research Institute is offering a free treatment program, for men aged 50 and over who are suffering with sleep disturbance along with stress or mood problems.

Insomnia is the most common form of sleep dis-turbance and can be a great concern to individuals and significantly impact on everyday life. Previous research has shown that insomnia is a significant risk factor for depression, and when insomnia and mood problems occur together, it is usually indicative of more severe illness. Sleep disturbance can often make treatment more difficult, and can even remain after depressive symptoms subside, and become long-lasting.

The SOMNA study will attempt to find out whether mood problems can be more effectively treated, when an internet-based treat-ment focusing on sleep problems is provided. The study invites men to participate in a treatment program assessing and treating their mood, health and memory by a team of experienced health professionals.

Do you suffer from problems sleeping? Do you think you might have depression or suf-fer from stress or anxiety? Are you male and over 50 years of age?

Through their participation in the study, men will receive an individualised treatment plan from one of the study clinicians, and will be randomly allocated to use one of two websites, each targeting sleep problems and insomnia. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the websites in alleviating symp-toms of insomnia and depression.

You may be eligible if you are male and aged 50 years or more, have access to an internet-enabled computer at home or work, have some depressive and insomnia symptoms and can attend the clinic at the Brain & Mind Research Institute in Camperdown for assessment and treatment over a period of three months.

For further information please contact the SOMNA Research team on 02 9114 4002, [email protected] or visit the study website www.somna.com.au. The study is supported by funding from beyondblue: the national depression and anxiety initiative and the Movember Foundation.
