  • HISTORY The earliest forms of bowling can be dated back to Ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire about 2,000 years ago. The game entailed tossing stone objects as close as possible to other stone objects. Originally the game used nine pins and involved lots of gambling and was banned. An outdoor game for most of its history, indoor bowling became popular in the mid-nineteenth century after the introduction of indoor lanes in New York in 1840. Using 10 pins took the place of the illegal nine pin game that involved gambling and was banned.
