Welcome to the Presentation Evening for the 88 th Season of B&DTTA. We are the 6th largest TTA in England and I am told the 3 rd oldest!!! (We were the Bmth Ping Pong League until 1933). Bournemouth has weathered the membership storms which have decimated the ETTA over the last 30 plus years. Had we followed the ETTA trend we would be down to about 25 teams!! The lowest point we reached was 54 teams. So we must be doing something right!! Happily the trend has been reversed and the trend is now upward for both B’mth and ETTA. The Coaching Project continues with another level 1 course completed which gives us something like 28 coaches in the area, more than any other area in UK. We will also soon have the benefit of 4 more UK Level 3 Coaches as James Lewis, Steve Foster, Shaun Newcomb and Rowden Fullen are on the course at present. Finally, I hope that many of you will be able to see Table Tennis at the Olympic Games, either in London or on TV. The Olympics Games always produce an enhanced interest in sport so we should find a boost in membership over the next year or two. At the first meeting of the new Committee, last August, the Chair was able to extend a welcome to its two ‘latest’ members, Jo Kuzu and Lee Devaney (here I would have put the word ‘new’ but for the fact that it is the umpteenth time Lee has served on the Committee). Their contribution has been valuable. Lee, in particular, has confounded the proceedings on many an occasion, by throwing unanswerable questions high into the ceiling and then batting them across the table for those opposite to answer. It has been known that the serving of those questioned was not always seen by those liable to answer. Now where have I come across that before? Sadly, towards the end of this season, Andy Hartnell who had served on the Committee for the last three years, had to take a leave of absence. Through the medium of this Newsletter I would like to thank Andy, on behalf of the Executive Committee, for all his hard work and sound advice over that period. I do hope that, in time, he will be able to return and again take his rightful place. I would also like to express the Executive Committee’s thanks to Brian Theaker, Alan Gordon and Jim Vials for their work over the previous year. All three retired at last year’s AGM. The Association is indebted to Councillor Blair Crawford, who this year has kindly agreed to be our Guest of Honour for the Presentation Evening. In the capacity of Executive Director at Bournemouth YMCA, Councillor Crawford twice acted as referee during the Association’s application process for an ‘Awards for All Lottery Funding’ grant. The monies received were put toward the costs of training of some of our members for their UKCC Level 1 coaching qualification. In last year’s newsletter I had a little moan, well a bit of a big one actually, concerning the ETTA’s handling of the Individual Membership procedure. Although there are still a few questions that need answering I believe that, in the main, matters will be much easier to resolve this year. Only time will tell! See also Malcolm’s piece on ETTA affiliation. There have been some resounding successes nationally and internationally for some of our young and not so young, players. Congratulations are extended to Hannah, Chloe, Tressa, Sanja and Joy, for the ladies and to George, Matthew (W), Hugo and Matthew (D) for the men. Also congratulations must go to Brian Bickell who, at an age well past retirement, received his Vetts England call-up to play against the Czech Republic in the European Championship. Brian, with his partner Colin Dyke, won the bronze medal in the doubles event. If only I could hit just one ball, just once, as well as this group of high flyers I would be able to rest contentedly. As this is not likely to happen, it would seem that I am to continue playing indefinitely, just as the Donkey always tries to catch the carrot. Who said “right comparison”? VIEW FROM THE BOTTOM

With yet another season put so tidily to bed by Malcolm, and the anticipation of Clubs analysing the results and averages in order to make up the new teams for next year, this Newsletter provides the opportunity to reflect on the 2011/12 season and make observations which would not be necessary,

or indeed appropriate, in the General Secretary’s report for the forthcoming Annual General Meeting.

At the first meeting of the new Committee, last August, the Chair was able to extend a welcome to its two ‘latest’ members, Jo Kuzu and Lee Devaney (here I would have put the word ‘new’ but for the

fact that it is the umpteenth time Lee has served on the Committee).

Sadly, towards the end of this season, Andy Hartnell who had served on the Committee for the last three years, had to take a

leave of absence.

Although there are still a few questions that need answering I believe that, in the main, matters will be

much easier to resolve this year. Only time will tell! See also Malcolm’s piece on ETTA affiliation.

There have been some resounding successes nationally and internationally for some of our young and not so young, players. Congratulations are extended to Hannah, Chloe, Tressa, Sanja and Joy, for the ladies and to George, Matthew (W), Hugo and

Matthew (D) for the men. Also congratulations must go to Brian Bickell who, at an age well past retirement, received his Vetts

England call-up to play against the Czech Republic in the European Championship. Brian, with his partner Colin Dyke, won the bronze medal in the doubles event. If only I could hit just one ball, just once, as well as this group of high flyers I would be able to

rest contentedly. As this is not likely to happen, it would seem that I am to continue playing indefinitely, just as the Donkey always tries to catch the carrot. Who said “right comparison”?

BDTTA LEAGUE REVIEW There were 13 Clubs and 60 teams represented in the League compared to 13 Clubs and 56 teams last season. This season the league reverted to a two-way system for the first time since

the 2005/2006 season and the jury is still out as to the preference.

The league programme ran very smoothly, with no disruptions

due to bad weather or erupting volcanoes. There were 6 un-played matches this season (4 of them in the Premier) which is

a tremendous improvement over last season's 17, even taking

into account the fewer fixtures. Each defaulting team was penalised by 4 penalty points and 10 games. The league tables

were very easy to annotate because there were no “repeat offenders” this season.

Concern was expressed at the last AGM about the number of

teams fielding only 2 players which hit a record 62 incidents last season. There were the usual rumblings about whether fines should be imposed or not but it was decided to see what effect the possible reversion to a two-way system would have. Mercifully this went down to 36 incidents this season and is an improvement whichever way you look at it (37 for the first 18 weeks last season, 48 for the last 18 weeks of last season). Despite the improvement, it should be remembered that each incident represents a marred evening for people who were

expecting a full evening's table tennis. Club Secretaries are asked once again to avoid entering under-manned teams into

the league and also continue to ensure that team captains (especially new captains) are aware of the reserves that they can call upon.

LEAGUE TABLES The playing season was obviously a lot shorter with only 18 weeks of fixtures as opposed to 27 weeks from the three-way system. It was deja-vu all over again however as two title races went down to the wire (Divs 2 and 3) and three relegation

issues weren't resolved until the final week. There was also one promotion issue that was sorted in the final week as three teams vied for second place in Div 1. Here follow the divisional league tables along with a brief report on some of the highs and lows.

Kinson A 18 2 2 14 52-128 16

Kinson B 18 2 4 12 43-127 13

Many congratulations to Bmth Sports A, who occupied the top spot from start to finish and was the only team in the whole of

the league to win all of their matches. They also won the

Premier title by the highest winning margin in the entire league (19 points). George Downing and Stephen Foster were

unbeaten all season and Nathan Bingham dropped just the three matches.

The young ladies of Bmth Sports B (Tressa Armitage, Sanja

Clements, Hannah Hicks, Chloe Thomas & Joy Whitehorn) were in their “A” team's slipstream all season. They ended up 19

points behind the lads, but it would have been a bit closer had they not conceded their last match of the season to Lynwood A.

Chloe Thomas of B’mth Spts B New Milton A had initial cause for concern as teenage sensation George Downing moved across to Bmth Sports this season having helped Milton to second place in the Premier last season. However, Phil Handy moved back to the area and helped Brian Vibert (captain), Steve Hemmings and Brian Bickell to a very respectable third place.

Both Kinson teams are relegated but it was a close run thing as to

who should come bottom. The B team claimed that dubious distinction by virtue of a four point penalty deduction from

conceding one of their matches.

Respect to the omnipresent Julian Hewlett (Kinson A) who was the only player in the league to play all 54 games and Tom Andrews played all possible 53 games for Bmth Sports D.

Bmth Sports G 18 4 0 14 56-124 19 It was a tussle between Bmth Sports H (Colin & Danny Bryson, Eric Buckley, Charlie Chang & Louie La) and Ringwood A (Martin Jerome, Adrian Mountain & Chris Morgan) for the top spot in the early stages of the season, but Bmth dislodged Ringwood in Week 9 and stayed on top for the duration. As it happened, Ringwood

faded and ended up in mid-table, and the second place was eventually claimed by Merton B (Danny Allen, Adam Elcock, Jon

Ferguson & Ian Robertson). It must be said that Bmth Sports E and F teams both put in strong challenges for second place but they each lost their last match of the season whereas Merton won theirs.

It was a case of father & son reunion as Colin Bryson teamed up with son Danny for the title-winning Bmth Sports H team. Colin

was as competitive and awkward as usual but Danny emerged with the higher average (85%) versus pater's 78%.

One would have to have a heart of stone not to feel sorry for

Broadstone A's captain Jon Sweet. He got his dates mixed up so his team failed to show against New Milton B in only the second week of the season. This haunted poor old Jon all season and it was only the 10 games penalty that got them relegated right at the death, thus sparing Lynwood B by a whisper (or a groan from Jon!). Lynwood's Jamie Trevillion continued to impress as he went

Broadstone A in Week 8 and languished there for the rest of the season.

Winton YMCA A 18 2 0 16 36-144 9 There will still be a Broadstone presence in Div 1, however as the B team (Chris Green, Melvyn Gregory, Steve Laycock, Chris Turner & Josh Warren) just pipped Bransgore to the title by two points. The Russell-oriented Bransgore (Alan Russell, John

Russell, Russell Yearworth, Mike Anderson, Graham Blake & Eric Snook) book a quick return to Div 1 following relegation last season. The Div 2 title wasn't decided until the final week with Bransgore starting the week on top with 56 points and Broadstone on 55 points. However Broadstone took maximum points off the already doomed Nimrod A, while Bransgore could

only take a point off spoilers Bmth Sports J.

It's a quick return back to Div 3 for Nimrod A and Winton YMCA A as they ended up in the Div 2 basement on nine points each.

Shamrock A 18 0 0 18 46-134 10

The Div 3 title wasn't settled either until the last week of the season. At the end of the penultimate week, Ringwood B was

on top with 49 points and Lynwood C was second on 47 points.

However Lynwood slaughtered Bmth Sports L 9-1 whilst Ringwood lost by the same score line to New Milton E. This meant that Div 3 was also won by two points with Lynwood C (Mick Barry, Robin Bradley, Peter Collins & Roger Whitt) just pipping Ringwood B (Rod Bryden, Mike Davies, Wayne Moore & Julian Preston). New Milton at least made the table look nice and tidy as they were

clustered together mid table in correct alphabetical order.

Shamrock A was the only team in the league to lose all of their matches so they go back to Div 4 after winning that division last

season. Merton E could have swapped places on the trap-door with Bmth Sports L but Merton's draw in their last match against New Milton G was too little, too late.

Winton YMCA C 18 1 0 17 36-144 8 Winton YMCA B (Alan Henwood, Dave Lipsey, Tae Uk Park & Stephen Ratcliffe) commanded the heights throughout the season, with Bmth Sports M breathing down their necks much of the time. Breamore mounted an early challenge but in the end they only just missed out on third place to Nimrod B. With the Winton YMCA B team at the top, their C team ended up at

the extreme opposite of the division. The C team escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth last season but now it's down

to Div 5 they go. The youngsters of Bmth Sports P gave it a really good go at the higher level and were still hoping to perform the great escape in the final week at the expense of their N team. Although the P's did well to beat Breamore away by 6-4, the N team walloped Winton YMCA C 10-0 at home on the same Tuesday

night to send their club mates down.

New Milton K 18 1 0 17 25-155 7 Ringwood C won the division with the second highest winning margin in the league (12 points) and distinguished themselves by not losing a match. The team comprising Pat Baldwin, Richard

Barrett, Dennis Elkins, Steve Heap, Jonty Preston & Phil Smith occupied the top slot from the word go. Steve won all of his 30

matches, Dennis dropped just the one and Phil won 38 out of 41. Bmth Sports R did really well to come second considering that captain Jonathan Gibson often struggled to put out a full team and they were a player short on four occasions.

BDTTA LEAGUE INFO My BDTTA address book now has 223 contacts and I am always happy to add to it. When we abolished paper distribution of Results, League Tables and Averages a few years back, it was agreed that team captains would pass on copies to their players who did not have access to the Internet. If you are not getting them, please have a word with your captain or club secretary.

To receive regular updates and notification of Results, League Tables and Averages please contact Results Secretary Malcolm

Floyd by email on [email protected] or phone 01425 620370.

In closing, I would like to wish good luck to those teams who are promoted, and hopefully a speedy return to those who have dropped down a division.

INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

A well supported and entertaining evening of table tennis was

had with the ‘star of the show’ being George Downing (B’th Sports) winning five titles without dropping a set in any of his

finals. Newcomer Kate Maksimenko (Winton YMCA) won two titles and was runner-up in one – well done to Kate in her first

season. Tressa Armitage, Hugo Pang and Zac Dowling (all from B’th Sports) won two titles each with Hugo finishing runner-up

in both the Premier and Junior U18. Hugo retained his Junior U15 title, Louie La (B’th Sports) retained his Veteran 40+ title and Danny Allen (Merton) retained his Veteran 70+ title, Louie and Danny both winning their titles for the third year running. This year we included some semi-final matches that provided some great entertainment – Division 1 with Finn Morgan-Bayliss (B’th Sports) with his attacking flair overcoming a resilient Jamie

Trevillion (Lynwood) 7-11, 11-9, 11-9 and 11-9. However, Finn eventually lost in the final to Ben Cunningham (B’th Sports) 8-11

in the fifth set in a match full of attacking table tennis with some scintillating rallies. Another splendid match was the Ladies Singles between Julie Smillie (New Milton) and Kate Maksimenko with Kate eventually coming out on top in a hard fought match 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 8-11 and 11-8, although Kate lost in the final to Tressa Armitage. Not to be outdone the Vet 40+ match between Geoff Ware (Lynwood) and Phil Beeden (Merton)

turned into an enthralling contest with Phil two sets up, Geoff pulling it back to two all with Phil finally winning the fifth set 11-

5.

Although there were some exciting matches going to five sets – Division 1, Division 3, Division 4, Ladies Doubles, probably the

toughest and most tense match on the night was the Ladies Singles between Tressa Armitage and Kate Maksimenko. Tressa took the first two sets but Kate fought back taking the next two sets. In the fifth set it became a tense pushing game with Tressa overcoming a stubborn Kate to win the set 15-13.

Other Nights Matches In addition to the above, mention must go to a Junior U18 Semi-final match (played Thursday 29th March) between George Downing and Jamie Trevillion. This was really exciting table tennis from two juniors with Jamie being two sets to one up before George made it two all. In the final set, Jamie playing his defensive role superbly and George with his attacking ‘topspin’ made for some outstanding rallies, with Jamie being 10-8 up and on the verge of winning

before George rallied, eventually beating Jamie 13-11.

Another outstanding match was the final of the Vets 50+ (played Monday 2nd April) between Steve Hemmings (New Milton) and Wei-

Jun Liang (B’th Sports). Wei-Jun took the first two sets before Steve pulled it back to two sets all. Steve with his superb defensive play against Wei-Jun’s attacking skills made for a ‘high class’ table tennis match. With Steve being forced further back from the table and returning shot after shot against Wei-Jun’s angled hits, made an absorbing and exciting match. In the fifth set Steve coming from 6-8 down finally won the set 11-8 and therefore the match.

BDTTA TIMES & DIRECTORY HANDICAP CUP

FINALS

Kinson B (Premier) won the Times & Directory Cup beating New

Milton A (Premier) 5-3 in an entertaining final on Tuesday 20th March. Kinson B represented by Tom Stride (+12 handicap), Richard

Davies (+7) and Darren Bellis (+12) overcame a strong New Milton A side represented by Brian Vibert (+4), Steve Hemmings (+6) and

Philip Handy (+4) in a most enjoyable match.

The match started with Tom beating Steve and Richard beating Brian giving Kinson B a 2-0 lead before Philip pulled a game back to

make it 2-1. Richard (attack) then played Steve (defence) and although beating him 31-14 and 31-27 did not reflect the tremendous rallies that took place between the two players with Richard having to work extremely hard with his forehand ‘topspin drives’ and ‘drop shots’ to beat Steve’s defence.

Philip then beat Tom which left Brian to play Darren. Brian’s ‘all round game’ eventually overcame a stubborn Darren 30-31, 31-29 and 31-30, which made the match level at 3-3. The game of the evening then commenced between Richard and Philip (both unbeaten). The match had it all, from two attacking players, with some outstanding fast controlled rallies and although Philip ‘pegged’ back the handicap difference on many occasions, Richard finally won this

enthralling game 31-29, 28-31 and 31-29.

Darren then beat Steve to make the match score a 5-3 win to Kinson B. A most enthralling match, played in a friendly but

competitive manner. Well done to Richard in winning all his three games.

Richard Davies, Sean McLean, Tom Stride (not shown Darren Bellis)

The ‘Plate’ competition was won by Merton H (Division 4) beating

B’mouth Sports J (Division 2) 5-2 in the final played on Wednesday 21st March.

Merton H represented by Reinhard Lindner (+22 handicap), Scott Bishop (+23) and Ben Tricksey (+21) took a 3-0 lead against

David Roberts made it 3-1 beating Scott Bishop 31-28, 21-31 and 31-28. Ian Mashford made it 3-2 beating Ben Tricksey with Ian coming from one set down to win a very close match 17-31, 31-29 and 31-29. Reinhard then beat Seth and finally Ben got the better of David winning 31-26 and 31-23.

The match was played in the most enjoyable and friendly

manner and credit must go to the four junior players not forgetting of course Ian and Reinhard.

Reinhard Lindner, Scott Bishop, Ben Tricksey Congratulations to both winners and commiserations to both runners-up on what were two enjoyable but well fought

TOWN REPORTS National Competitions Our Entries in the English Leagues Cup Championships have so far been very successful this year. After the Zone rounds we

have the following teams which will be attending the National Finals i.e. the last eight in each event.

J.M. Rose Bowl (Ladies team Event) 1 Team

Carter Cup (Junior Boys Team Event) 1 Team Bromfield Trophy (Junior Girls Team Event) 3 Teams We did not get through in the Wilmott Cup as we came third in the group BUT had we won 2 more games on count back we would have won the group!!! A bit close.!!

I am sure that you would wish to congratulate all those who have taken part in the zone rounds, 2 of which were held locally one in Bmth one at Southampton. Our thanks are due to Colin Bryson (Chairman Bmth Sports) who not only provided the venue for the Wilmott Cup but also declined payment for the day, these thanks are from BDTTA and the visiting teams who normally have to share the costs.

The Final Rounds will be held on the weekend 16/17th June at

Westfield near Northampton. Supporters would be very welcome.

Inter Town League Matches. The Junior and Cadet Events were both won by Bournemouth Teams, a great performance over three sessions during the year. Details in James’ report and will be on the website. The Men’s Championship was won on count back by 2 games from

the Portsmouth Team after a long day. These two teams drew their final match.

COACHING OFFICERS REPORT continued

Many congratulations to our new coaches this year:- Chloe

Thomas, Nathan Bingham, Josh Warren, Chris Turner and Simon Daish who all successfully completed their UKCC Level 1

coaching courses. With all this increased coaching input, we have seen a large rise in our players competing at both a local and national level.

It was great to see a large number of our players representing

both Dorset and Hampshire in the recent English Schools Team and Individual Events. Park School, Bournemouth School for

Boys and Portchester School were all crowned South West Schools Champions at the South West Zone Finals in Plymouth.

Park School:- South West Champions Bournemouth Schools for Boys Team comprising of Hugo Pang, Patrick Hurley, David Roberts and Seth Hemmingway were so close to reaching the national schools finals, losing out on a count back of points in their last match.

In the English National Schools Individual Events nine local

players made the journey to Doncaster with Matthew Daish receiving the well-deserved accolade of ‘U11 National Schools

Champion’!

In the Hampshire inter-town competition Bournemouth were again crowned cadet and junior champions. In the Junior British league Hannah McErlane, Becky Kuzu, Beth Wilson and Jasmine Johns in their first year came a very impressive 2nd in their division.

In the boys Junior British League, Hugo Pang, George Downing,

Daniel Mctiernan and Luke Saville were promoted to the Premier Division.

Bournemouth entered nine teams in the ETTA National Junior and Cadet League Competitions.

FOUR GO FOR LEVEL 3

Four table tennis coaches from the Bournemouth and District League (Stephen Foster & Rowden Fullen from Bmth Sports and James Lewis & Shaun Newcomb from New Milton) travelled up to Lilleshall on 9th May for the first stage of their UKCC Level 3 Coaching Course.

The entire course lasts for approximately ten months and starts

off with a four-day residential period at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre in the Midlands. The course covers a variety of

technical coaching disciplines including physiology, psychology, periodisation, biomechanics and performance analysis. Tutors are experts in their respective field with many having a table tennis background. The course is aimed at the developing coach, working with players approaching or already participating at elite level. This is a demanding course which requires significant off-course time to complete session plans and deliver

a high number of coaching sessions.

The course includes two internal assessments carried out by regional coaches, home study tasks and delivery of a sixteen week coaching programme, culminating in a practical assessment on the final day of the course. After qualifying, the Level 3 coach will have the skills and knowledge to plan, implement and analyse & revise annual coaching programmes. The knowledge gained will enable

candidates to develop an understanding of safe, ethical and effective table tennis coaching and they will be qualified to

coach the skills and techniques of the sport to groups of adults and training.

Looks like the chaps have got their work cut out, but it will all be

worth it in the end when they are handed their Level 3 coaching

certificates next year. Good luck chaps!

ETTA RULE & LAW CLARIFICATIONS

AFFILIATION

There was some confusion over player registrations at the start of the season, but hopefully all will be clear after this:-

ETTA Rule 12.8 states “A person shall not be registered for a

Local League or a Directly Affiliated Club unless he pays the Player Member affiliation fee to that League or Club or can provide evidence that he has already paid that fee”.

This means that a player shouldn't even be registered with the league unless they have paid their ETTA fee for the ETTA year

ended 15th November.

Just to clarify, all those players with a current ETTA membership

will be eligible for registration with the league for the commencement of the 2012/2013 season.

They will of course have to renew their ETTA membership no later than 15th November 2012 to remain eligible to play in the league after 15th November. New players must not be registered for the league until they have paid the current year's ETTA affiliation fee. Having said all of that, the BDTTA would be most grateful if players

could renew their 2012/2013 ETTA membership before registering for the 2012/2013 BDTTA season.

Another problem

When reconciling the ETTA membership database with the BDTTA register, some players were not showing as belonging to the league because they didn't indicate their relationship to the “Bournemouth” league when they applied online. The following note was sent out to all club secretaries on 14th October 2011, but still applies to all new registrations:-

“Could all club secretaries please do their best to ensure that when their new members register with the ETTA, in addition to naming their club(s), they also declare their relationship to “Bournemouth”. This means that their names will appear within the league's section of the ETTA register and therefore enable Gordon to view them”.

THE EXPEDITE SYSTEM In the last six years it is believed that the expedite system has only

been invoked about four times. However, it is possible that the ETTA law should have been applied on other occasions but the umpires didn't know how to operate the ETTA law. No excuses after this:-

Under ETTA Law 2.15, “The expedite system shall come into operation after 10 minutes' play in a game or at any time when

requested by both players or pairs (the expedite system shall not be introduced in a game if at least 18 points have been scored). If the ball is in play when the time limit is reached and the expedite system is due to come into operation, play shall be interrupted by the umpire and shall resume with service by the player who served in the rally that was interrupted: if the ball is not in play when the expedite system comes into operation, play shall resume with service by the player who received in the immediately preceding rally.

Thereafter, each player shall serve for 1 point in turn until the end

of the game, and if the receiving player or pair makes 13 returns in a rally the receiver shall score a point.

Introduction of the expedite system shall not alter the order of serving and receiving in the match.

Once introduced, the expedite system shall remain in operation

until the end of the match”

Seemples! (followed by the noise that meerkat makes). It is always a good idea to note the start time of any match and then to have a “second umpire” to count the returns if it goes to expedite.

MATTHEW DAISH- NATIONAL SCHOOLS

CHAMPION

Matthew Daish has become the new Under-11 ESTTA champion!

The 11-year-old beat James Smith (seeded 1sty) in the fifth to

win the prestigious title of ‘National Champion’ in Doncaster. Matthew (whose progress was streamed live on the New Milton

TTC website), started the day at 9am by beating his first opponent Harry Nicholls in straight games: 11-6 11-8 11-6. His

second opponent in the group stages was Aalhad Kulkarni who again he beat in straight games: 11-6 11-2 11-6. Matthew’s

next opponent was Ben Worley who was a little tougher than the last two but Matthew struggled and achieved another win: 11-9 11-8 14-12. After an hour and a half wait, Matthew returned to the stage to face his next opponent, Gruff Mattias who was standing in for no-show Louis Simmons. Daish thrashed Mattias: 11-4 11-5 11-2. Matthew’s last

opponent in the group stage was Timothy Kilbey. Matthew struggled in the first game but came back and beat Kilbey: 11-8

11-2 11-5. Almost two hours passed till Matthew was called up for his quarter- finals match against Amir Hussan. Again, Matthew struggled in the first game, lost the second and the third but managed to come back to win fourth and fifth: 13-11 3-11 6-11 11-5 11-1.

On to the semi-finals and Matthew’s opponent was 11 year old

Joey Chen who was playing well in his matches that day. Joey though couldn’t stand up against Daish resulting in another 3-0

win for Matthew beating Chen: 11-8 11-9 11-5. 4pm heralded the Under 11 final: Matthew Daish vs. number one seed James Smith and one spectacular final to come! Smash after smash Matthew ended up winning a tight first game. He held on but couldn’t sustain the momentum and lost the next two games which left Matthew 2-1 down. In the fourth (and possibly last game for Matthew) the opponent called “time out” though winning 13-12. In a dramatic turn of events

following the “time out” Matthew persevered under extreme pressure and came back to win the fourth 15-13. The fifth and final game came down to the wire with scores even at 10-10. Smith tried to loop the ball past Matthew's backhand but failed with the ball flying over the edge of the table putting Matthew in the lead. Matthew won the next point to seal the victory and the title of National Champion.

Final scores: 11-9 0-11 6-11 15-13 12-10

Katie Holt and Daisy Kennard also participated in the National Tournament. Katie won 2 and lost 2 in the group and only just missed out going through on count back as two players won 2 lost 2. She had good wins against Katie Shephard 3-2 and Anna Raymakers 3-1. Daisy Kennard in the U16 girls battled hard in all her matches and played extremely well.

Report by Andrew Daish (NMTTC)

MUDEFORD WOOD COMMUNITY CENTRE SAVED!

As most of you will know, Mudeford Wood Community Centre is the main playing venue of the New Milton Table Tennis club. Back in

October 2009 the Christchurch Borough Council announced that it would be “considering the future of the Mudeford Wood

Community Centre”, which immediately triggered fears that the Council intended to close the centre.

The campaign to save the centre immediately got underway and it was supported by local residents and the User Groups including the New Milton Table Tennis Club of course. The “Friends of Mudeford Wood” committee was set up to organise the campaign and to raise funds with the view to take over the running of the centre. New Milton club secretary Bev Scott-Johns volunteered to be their Treasurer and a number of other New Milton club members also

signed up as “Friends” and were involved in the protest marches and fund raising. The high profile campaign proved to be a great success and in September 2011, the council gave the go-ahead to a lease for the Mudeford Wood Community Trust (run by the “Friends”) to take over the management of the Centre in April 2012. The Trust officially took over the day to day running of the centre on 1st April 2012 and the keys were duly handed over by the Council.

A “Fun Day” was held at the centre on 28th April to celebrate the takeover and the NMTTC planned to put on a table tennis display

including having a go on the club's robot. Let's just say that the weather wasn't kind which forced a number of stalls inside so the demonstration couldn't take place in the end. That didn't stop Bev handing out flyers and generally promoting the New Milton club. The threatened closure of Milton's main league venue spurred the

club to make contingency plans to secure alternative playing premises. Although the club has use of the Sway Village Hall, this

is restricted to Sunday nights which it uses for coaching and practice. They commenced using the Arnewood School first for

coaching and practice nights and then for league matches as well as Mudeford Wood. The club's vision is to operate from its own

premises, but that seems a long way off!

A TRIBUTE TO DAVE TURNER

As David Turner is retiring as Chairman this year, I thought a few words about him would not go amiss. David first went on the Committee in 1957 and remained there until 1964, when work commitments caused him to leave. He was elected back on to the Committee in 1973 until 1977. In 1978 he

took on the job of Results Secretary, a post he kept until 1985, when Paul Applin took over and David became Vice Chairman.

In 1987 he took over as General Secretary for two years, following Joyce Coop’s retirement, when no one would take the job on. Later Ron Fairhall filled the post. David then became Results Secretary, once more, from 1997 until 1999. He took on the General Secretary position in 2001 and was elected

Chairman in 2002. In 2005, whilst being Chairman, he agreed to become Tournament Secretary.

In all those years he served the Association, the many different

Officers positions he took was because no one else was willing to take them on.

David has given so much to this Association. He has been a tireless Chairman and NO ONE will ever be able to give to this Association what David has over these last 50 years. This is just a small potted version of his efforts for Bournemouth table tennis which, I know, does not do him the justice he so well

deserves.

NATIONAL ROUND-UP Again a highly successful year during the current season which is now coming to a close.

Current and former BDTTA players are competing for National and in some cases International honours.

In the National Senior Championships Hannah Hicks lost in the

final of the 21’s, the final of the Mixed and the semis of the Women’s Singles. In the Mixed Doubles she and her partner

Chris Doran beat the two top England players, 4 times winners

Jo Parker and Paul Drinkall, a fantastic result. George Downing beat Sean Cullen, the England No 15 man, to demonstrate just

how fast he is improving.

On the International stage, Hannah Hicks and Chloe Thomas continue to compete for their respective countries and to raise

their levels and move up in the World Rankings. Hannah will play professionally in Sweden next season. Matt Ware is in 2nd place in the Under 21’s on the Grand Prix circuit and is also in 4th place in the Men’s Open. He is considering professional opportunities in Germany and France for next season. In the recent Junior Masters (where the top 14 players in the country compete with each other) George Downing started as

the 10th Seed and finished in 5th place. This places him just behind the top 4 England players and as a result he has now

been selected for his first England cap in the Junior Polish Open at the end of May, where he will join the two top England players, Sam Walker and Lewis Grey. George had further success in the UK School Games recently

held in the Olympic Excel centre in London, where he and Hugo Pang helped the South West Region to a Bronze Medal in this

high profile event. Chrissie Slot who also trains and plays in BSTTC went one better to take her team to the Gold Medal

position.

Dating advice

Never date a table tennis player; to them love means nothing!

Q. What can you serve but never eat? A. A Table Tennis Ball

Q: How many ping pong players does it take to change a

light bulb? A: Four. One to complain that it's "table tennis" not "ping pong",

one to change the light bulb, one to protest about the type of glue he used to fix the light bulb into place, and one to get out

his copy of the "Bats 'R' Us" catalogue and point out that he could have bought an even better one for 50p less.

COMPUTER CORNER A Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that, unlike English,

nouns are either masculine or feminine eg house is LA cassa (feminine) and pencil is EL lapiz (masculine). A student asked what

gender is a computer, so she divided the class into male and female and asked them to decide for themselves, each giving four

reasons for their answers.

The men said computers should be feminine because:- 1) Nobody but a computer's creator understood the internal logic. 2) The language they use to communicate with others is

incomprehensible to everyone else.

3) Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for later retrieval.

4) As soon as you make a commitment to one you find yourself spending half your salary on accessories for it. The women said computers should be masculine because:- 1) In order to do anything with them they have to be turned on.

2) They have a lot of data but still cannot think for themselves.

3) They are supposed to help solve problems but half the time THEY are the problem.

4) As soon as you commit to one you realise that had you waited a bit longer you could have got a better model.

THE JURY IS STILL OUT!

TABLE TENNIS PHILOSOPHY Birds do not sing, they communicate. Humans are the only animals that sing. Or play Table Tennis.

The student asks, “why should I hit with spin?”. The teacher says “Because you cannot spin the universe around the ball”. Despair says “I cannot hit with the speed of my opponent”. Happiness says “I do not need to”. A serve is not a way of starting a point, but ending one. A Table Tennis player with one good shot has none.

As a child I wanted to be right about my playing abilities. Now I

want to be wrong,
