Continuing an annual tradi-tion at the May ContactBreakfast, The Chamber

Foundation, Inc., the not-for-profiteducational organization of theDutchess County Regional Cham-ber of Commerce, will proudlyaward 31 scholar-ships to studentsplanning to furthertheir education in theHudson Valley andbeyond. This year,thanks to amazingcommunity supportat events like the Co-simo DiBrizzi Celeb-rity Servers Dinner,Twisted Gala, Golf-A-Thon and more, the Foundationis able to present a record-settingamount of scholarship dollars, andwill give over $53,000 in scholar-ship money to worthy recipients.

The Chamber was sad tohear of the passing of SusanBrown, who died in March

in Rockport,Maine followinga three-year bat-tle with cancer.She was 65.

Susan wasthe DutchessCounty Re-gional Chamberof Commerce’s first MembershipDirector. Current Chamber Presi-dent and CEO Charles S. North,then a member of the Board ofDirectors, recalled how Susanbrought the Chamber to anotherlevel with the addition of some-

one specifically hired to interactwith and recruit new members.

“Her whole life at the timewasthe Chamber,” North said. “Beforethat there wasn’t a concerted ef-fort to speak with businesses andorganizations about the benefitsof being a member.”

According to the obituary inthe Poughkeepsie Journal, Susanhad a long career in advertisingsales, leadership developmentand management. She careddeeply about helping businessesand nonprofit organizations suc-ceed with their marketing and ad-vertising efforts. She also workedwith the developmentally dis-abled, helping them to achieve

personal and professional goals,develop their self-esteem and in-crease their independence. Shewas honored in the 1990s with theDutchess County YWCA’s Saluteto Women Award.

After living many years inDutchess County, she moved toWaldoboro, Maine, and workedseveral years in advertising sales.

Managed Service providers –What’s in it for your business?It is a true statement to say that

probably the two biggest fearsthat businesses have when

they are approached by ManagedService Providers (MSPs), as itpertains to their business infra-structure and systems, is lack ofcontrol and lack of responsive-ness.

Many businesses feel if theyaren’t monitoring their systemsand are allowing a third party to doit, they have somehow lost controlof the day-to-day running of theirbusiness. Business owners also feelif they don’t have an in-house per-son who can respond to issues thatare happening within the businessinfrastructure, the delay in con-tacting a third party could costthem valuable time and money.Typically, these fears, though ra-tional, can be handled by reallyevaluating the MSP properly.

A goodMSP will explain theirIT infrastructure and how theyare capable of monitoring that oftheir clients’ that won’t interfereor slow down day-to-day opera-tions. If you review this plan andyou are finding holes or have con-cerns, this provider may not bethe one for you.

A good MSP will also dem-onstrate that they have the propertechnology in place so any issuesare responded to in a timely andprofessional fashion. In fact, a goodMSP should have their systems setup to automatically diagnose andrepairmany computer issues beforeyou even know they have occurred.This will cut down on emergencyproblems. Automated alerts can getthe attention of the MSP’s technicalstaff immediately.

Another advantage is the abil-ity to solidly budget your IT ser-vices business expenses, as manyMSPs offer programs at a flat rateto cover a set of machines, serv-ers and networking equipmentso there are no surprises at theend of the month. You also gettiered support and expertise soissues can be escalated as neededto technical staff that have a par-ticular knowledge base or higherlevels of expertise to handle any

problems that youmay encounter.They should also have help-desksupport for all of your staff.

Once an organization can seethe financial benefits of workingwith an MSP, it starts to really fallinto place how much better theyare doing at an organization levelas well. Consider that with a goodMSP, your systems are constantlymonitored, technology is in placeto mitigate any issue before staffis even aware there is one, thereis a specific routine for securityupdates and OS patches that fallinto place and happen automati-cally, backups are handled appro-priately across the board, and youhave an instant IT staff availableas soon as you sign on.

Lastly, keep in mind that anMSP is not the same as outsourc-ing. The MSP functions as an ex-tension of your business, givingyou a more manageable budget,an advanced IT infrastructureand overall peace of mind.

On Saturday, May 4, Walk-way Over the Hudsonwill once again look to set

a new Guinness World Record.Last year, people from all over theHudson Valley got their names inthe history books as they came to-gether on the Walkway to do theHokey Pokey, marking the world’slargest such gathering. This sec-ond world record attempt willbring together friends, families,and communities to create theworlds longest chorus line wherethousands of people will be sing-ing and dancing in celebration ofI Love My Park Day.

Participa-tion tickets areon sale now atwa lkway.orgfor $15. Allentrants will re-ceive a confir-mation e-mail

that will serve as their admission.Space is limited, only 3,000 spotsare available. Don’t delay, sign

IT Committee presents two seminars about using technology

The Information Technol-ogy Committee of theDutchess County Regional

Chamber of Commerce is hold-ing two free seminars to help youlearn more about technology thatcould greatly improve your busi-ness.

On Tuesday, May 7, the ITCommittee will present a seminarentitled, “Information andMobileDevice Security,” from 9 a.m.-12p.m. at IBM in Poughkeepsie. Itwill include a panel discussionfollowing the presentation whereexperts will answer questions

from participants.This seminar will help to pro-

tect your business. With the in-creased use of technology in busi-ness, there’s also a much higherrate in cyber at-tacks, phishing,Internet scams,viruses, mal-ware attacks, etc.In one month, asmall business with 5-10 comput-ers can be the subject of 200,000intrusion attempts, 80,000 virusattacks and 2,000 malware at-tacks. The IT Committee will

discuss how to set up a secureenvironment that can keep yourbusiness safe.

A week later, on Tuesday, May14, the committee will hold a sec-

ond presenta-tion called “Web& Video 101.” Itwill also be heldfrom 9 a.m.-12p.m. at IBM in

Poughkeepsie and will include apanel discussion.

This seminar will focus onweb and video, specifically teach-ing beginners in the field some of

the most effective uses of InternetMarketing. Some topics will in-clude Search Engine Optimiza-tion (SEO), e-mail marketing andpay-per-click (PPC). Attendeeswill also learn how to best builda business website and about webvideo concepts such as compres-sion, formats, codecs, frame rate,bit rate and resolution.
