My name is Matthew Mastriforte and I am a 25 year old from Atlanta, Georgia. I first heard about the corps because my high school drumline instructor was on the snareline in the early 2000s. After listening to him speak very highly about the corps, as well as searching around on YouTube and watching hours of videos, I knew that Boston was where I wanted to end up. So I headed one state over to auditions. I ended up marching the Boston Crusaders quadline in 2009, 2011-2012, and was on staff in 2013-2014.

Being a Boston Crusader is incredibly important to me. It is more than the red and black uniform or the show performed inside the lines. I am a part of a long standing tradition and a member of a family that extends for over 75 years. I can still remember all of the alumni-sponsored events throughout every summer, always meeting someone who was in the corps decades before I was even born. Listening to their stories and being able to relate to them was such a humbling experience. I cannot wait to pull out the “back when I marched” statement when speaking to a future Crusader…

Since being a Crusader, my work ethic and attitude were absolutely developed and molded. Marching drum corps has changed my perception from "things I can't do" to "things I will do". Drum corps is not easy by any means, and I can honestly say that I have acquired a bit of toughness and endurance from it.

Following the 2014 season, I stepped back from drum corps and was selected to attend Officer Candidate School with the US Navy. I am currently stationed in Norfolk,VA as a division officer on board the USS MONTEREY. I live a very drum corps like lifestyle; though I am no longer running around a football field wearing quads. As a division officer, I am able to use the tools that drum corps has provided, and that goes for

anyone who has ever marched drum corps. You know how to work hard-er than most people ever have experienced, you know how to adapt to any situation, and you know how to come back out onto the field swing-ing even if there are obstacles put in the way. Use that experience to your advantage in your career, personal life, or any other area, and I promise you will find success.

Looking ahead into the 2016 season, I am pumped about the design and staff team that has been put together. The corps continues making decisions that push the members to new levels and continue to provide

an incredible experience. The Boston Crusaders recently celebrated their 75th anniversary, and I can promise you that they will not be going anywhere. I cannot wait to come out to a show this summer!

On Friday, October 9th, our annual golf tournament was held at Chemawa Golf Course in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Thankfully, it was a beautiful Fall day in New England, unlike the prior week of heavy rain, which caused us to postpone for the first time in seventeen years!

The success of the Boston Crusaders and the IAM programs begins with the generosity of our sponsors! We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Associate

Sponsors, BridgePoint Group, LLC; Broadridge Financial Solutions; DF King; Fiserv; and State Street.

Finally, our heartfelt thanks to our Tournament Sponsors and Tee Sponsors, Volunteers, and Board of Directors, your continued support is what drives Inspire Arts & Music.

Inspire Arts & Music is excited to announce that Kathy Kerrins will assume the role of volunteer coordinator for IAM events. Kathy is a long time manager for the Blessed Sacrament organization and has helped plan and execute events for the Boston Crusaders during the 2015 season. Local to the Boston area, Kathy has an incredible base of experience staffing and managing pageantry events but being new to this role at IAM Kathy needs your help. Inspire Arts & Music creates tremendous opportunity for everyone to get

involved. We have Great East Music Festivals expanding, the Great East Music Store growing, the transition into the new building facilities, HpYPE Percussion and after school art and dance at the Hyde Park Community Center, our partnership with Blessed Sacrament Colorguard - who are celebrating their 80th Anniversary season, and new exciting partnerships on the horizon.

Can you help? Do you have time or services in the area of retail, construction, or labor? Are you interested in alumni development and relations? Can you help us with managing our salesforce CRM? Are you retired or semi-retired and might be willing to do some data entry or office work with us? Can you volunteer for assisting for one of our many events? Email Kathy today, share your story and ask how you can get involved!

Beginning the week of Thanksgiving and going all the way through Black Friday & Cyber Monday, we will be running another online auction! Help us reach our fundraising goal by bidding on items like:

2016 marks the 80th anniversary for Blessed Sacrament Colorguards. Sac’s origins trace back to a local parish, all-female drill team formed in the Cambridgeport area of Cambridge, MA. As a drill team, the organization origi-nally served as a summer activity outlet for youth and in 1960 the organization formed a competitive winter guard unit. Help us celebrate Blessed Sacrament in

this special year. Support a function, come to a show, and donate to this incredible organiza-tion. Alumni, we are looking for photos from the years. Submit photos to [email protected] and visit www.blessedsac.org for more informa-tion on 80th anniversary events.

Our partnerships with you are very important to us!

In partnership with the Hyde Park Commu-nity Center, the Hyde Park Youth Percussion Ensemble (HpYPE) will continue to offer world percussion lessons for the children of Hyde Park for the 2016 calendar year. Our partners Meinl Percussion, D’Addario and members of the Inspire Arts & Music team have agreed to sponsor this incredible program for year two. As we enter into our second season, HpYPE will also be joined by two NEW programs for ART and DANCE. These classes will be taught by profession-al teachers under the Inspire Arts & Music umbrella. Once again, these program will conclude with a performance and showcase at our Concert in the Park event. Visit www.inspirearts.org for more information.

HpYPE continues in 2016 with the addition of:!

This years Street Beat 5K was a huge success. Over 350 runners raced from Military Park to Lucas Oil Stadium. Street Beat helped give back to over 60 music and arts organizations. A special thank you goes to the support of Drum Corps International (DCI) and Jonnie’s Good Guys. Their partnership was integral to the success of the 2015 Street Beat 5K.

2015 Wrap Up“The 75th anniversary season was a time for celebration for the Boston Crusaders. Our show “Conquest” was well received by members and fans. The corps had the unprecedented opportunity to perform with the Boston Pops at the Hatch Shell on the fourth of July. This was a two day event for the brass and percussion players. On the third, they spent nearly the entire day at the Hatch Shell. In the morning, there was a rehearsal where the corps practiced with the Boston Pops and worked out the plan for how to get on and off the stage. Later that evening, they returned for the first of two full performances. On the fourth, the corps assembled at Most Precious Blood Church where they experienced “History Day” and learned about the history of the corps while sitting in the pews of the church where it all began 75 years earlier. After a stirring rendition of Giant in front of the church, they headed back to the Hatch Shell for the big show. It was nearly a carbon copy of the night before, but this time the crowds were bigger, the lights were brighter and the performance was even more amazing.

Two days later, the corps was at Tanglewood, where they had another unprecedented performance. The combined performance with the Blue Devils and the Boston Pops Brass Ensemble was unlike anything anyone in attendance had heard before and it was a once in a lifetime experience for the members.

The 2016 season is shaping up to be a season of significant change and surprising continuity. We have added a new Executive Director and a new Corps Director. The program coordinator, drill writer, music coordinator, visual caption head and color guard caption head are all new. This seems like a lot of change, but in reality, the people filling these roles are all familiar to BAC. Usually, when a corps undergoes this much change, you would expect that the corps is planning for a multi-year rebuilding process. That is not our plan. The instruc-tional staff for the brass, percussion and color guard is virtually unchanged. For the first time in four years, the brass players are returning to the same staff they had last season. This will not be a rebuilding year, this will be a year of growth and excellence.

In September we announced that the 2016 show will be “Don Quixote”. The actual title of the show and the musical selections will be announced soon. I’m confident there will be at least one or two tunes that everyone will recognize. Ryan George and Ellis Hampton have begun writing the music and the goal is to have most of the music written before the end of the year.

The response to our audition marketing campaign has been great and we are looking forward to seeing a lot of new and talented performers at seven different audition locations.

I am excited to get the new season underway. We are working hard to build on the 75 year foundation that we have. The designers and the instructional staff are already well on their way as they prepare for the new season. The returning members are eager to get started and they are already providing support for the recruiting efforts. We have everything in place that I feel we need to have a very successful season.”
