MESSAGE FROM THECORPS DIRECTOR

Happy Holidays Crusader Supporters;

This time of year brings a reflection and thanks for all things in our lives. 2014 has been an incredible year. With all of your support, I have been fortunate enough to be welcomed into the Boston Crusaders organization.

In my first year as director I have had the pleasure of meeting numerous dedicated alumni, volunteers, and fans of the organization. At every turn I have been able to share in some of the most amazing stories; stories that have spanned our 74 years of history. It has been an honor learning and discovering the corps vast years of tradition.

I cannot wait to begin the 75th anniversary season and to help our team write another chapter in the history of the Boston Crusaders.

I am always filled with so much joy and thanks during this holiday season. I want to thank all of our students, staff,

volunteers, supporters, donors, parents, and fans for all that you do for the Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps. It is because of

your efforts we are able to continue this corps rich history.

I ask you to continue your support this season. Give to the Boston Crusaders and become a Crusader Club member. Your gift will ensure we continue giving future Crusaders an opportunity to carry on our cherished tradition.

Happy Holidays to You!Cheers,

Andy Waldukat

MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT

As we enter our 75th Anniversary, I am excited to say that the organization has never been stronger. I think you will see evidence of this as your peruse this edition of Giant Steps. I am energized and excited by the talent and dedication of our staff and 36 Board members. We have been highly focused on expanding the talent and diversity of the Board so we can deliver on our aggressive fundraising and revenue initiatives while driving improvements in all facets of the organization. The organization is focused on five key objectives:

• BUILDING A WORLD CLASS ORGANIZATION, COM-PLETE WITH A WORLD CLASS INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS

• DEVELOPING BEST IN CLASS PROGRAMS WITH TOP TALENT IN DESIGN AND INSTRUCTION FOR THE STU-DENTS

• PRESENTING CROWD PLEASING SHOWS, BECOMING A FAN FAVORITE AND A DESTINATION FOR STUDENTS

• ENHANCING OUR FINANCIAL SECURITY BY RETIRING DEBT AND BUILDING RESERVES

• BECOMING MORE THAN A DRUM CORPS…INSPIRING YOUTH THROUGH ARTS & MUSIC

I am involved in this activity because of the leadership & life skills I learned many years ago and the people I have met (many of whom I call best friends). My passion is finding ways to grow our programs so that thousands of kids can have that same experience that each of us hold dear. It is also a major reason why we are expanding back into the inner city; so that todays’ youth can experience what the drum corps and color guard kids of the 50’s and 60’s experienced.

Our organization has doubled in size in the last year, and our finances have improved dramatically. This has happened because of the engagement and passion of our friends, family, members, BOD, parents, alumni, and volunteers. I am asking you to get involved and consider how you can help the organization. Please consider volunteering, donating financially or in-kind, attending events, participating on committees, purchasing merchandise, buying or renting equipment through the Great East Music Store, getting a band you know to attend a Great East Festival, or influencing your network of friends and family to get involved in this great activity. You can make a difference in many different ways. If you have the time, we have the opportunity!

I hope you enjoy this issue of GIANT STEPS….and I hope you will see the literal giant steps the organization is taking.

Eat ‘em up Boston!

OVER 30 YEARS AGO I BECAME A MEMBER OF THE CRUSADER FAMILY. INNUMERABLE SELFLESS TEACHERS, VOLUNTEERS AND DONORS AFFORDED ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRAVEL NORTH AMERICA DEVELOPING AND SHARING MY TALENTS WHILE PERFORMING IN THE BEAUTIFUL BLACK AND RED. I WAS TAUGHT AND MENTORED BY THE FINEST OF HUMAN BEINGS. I CREATED A BOND WITH THE BEST OF FRIENDS. THE WORK ETHIC, SUCCESSES AND FAILURES, ALLOWED ME TO MOVE FORWARD FROM DRUM CORPS INTO MUSIC SCHOOL, PROFESSIONAL TEACHING AND ULTIMATELY LAW SCHOOL. THERE ISN’T A SINGLE DAY THAT GOES BY THAT I DO NOT REFLECT AND UTILIZE THOSE LESSONS AND SKILLS LEARNED WITH MY CRUSADER FAMILY. AND THERE ISN’T A DAY THAT GOES BY THAT I DO NOT CALL, EMAIL OR CORRESPOND WITH A CRUSADER FAMILY MEMBER.

I GIVE TO THE CRUSADER CLUB BECAUSE THE CRUSADER FAMILY GAVE TO ME. I GIVE TO THE CRUSADER CLUB BECAUSE THE CRUSADERS NEED MY SUPPORT AND THOSE KIDS ARE JUST LIKE ME; LOOKING FOR A CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE THE BAC AND SHARE THEIR TALENTS. I GIVE TO THE CRUSADER CLUB BECAUSE I STILL SWELL WITH PRIDE WHEN I SEE THE BLACK AND RED OR HEAR GIANT. I GIVE TO THE CRUSADER CLUB BECAUSE EVERY DONATION ENSURES THAT WE WILL SEE ANOTHER 75 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE. I GIVE TO THE CRUSADER CLUB BECAUSE THE CRUSADER FAMILY CONTINUES TO GIVE BACK TO ME EVERY DAY. PLEASE JOIN AND SUPPORT THE “CORPS WE LOVE.”

Great East Festivals finished a strong 2014 season with nearly $900,000 in gross receipts. Roughly 17,000 students representing 445 performing groups and 145 school districts attended our festivals.  Last season, the festi-vals were hosted at 40 performance sites in a five-week period – this repre-sents substantial growth when compared to the three sites that hosted the first Great East Festivals. We attribute our steady growth to remaining true to our roots and carrying out Bill Elwell’s, the festival’s founder, vision of “a per-formance festival for music educators run by music educators.”

Our judging system and our judges set our festivals apart from competitors. The Great East Festival system is a far cry from the systems many of us were accustomed to when performing on football fields across the region in the past. Our judging system is adaptive from group to group. Judge’s recording comments and clinics are always a positive experience. Music groups are able to use their experience as a valuable tool to grow their programs in a constructive manner. Our simple goal is to provide a positive experience for each group and give them a reason to return each year.

Inspire Arts & Music is excited to announce the launch of their new online music retail business, the Great East Music Store. The Great East Music Store specializes in new and preowned instrument sales as well as providing band programs with a full line of rental instruments along with a vast array of band and orchestra accessories. The Great East Music Store was created by music educators for music educators and is now becoming one of New England’s go to online music stores for all band and orchestra needs.

Our mission statement is simple. Explore-Engage-Empower! At the Great East Music Store, we want our customers to EXPLORE everything we have to offer. We offer more than just instruments. through music, dance, education and artists programs, we strive to offer multiple avenues to which you can explore your artistic talents. At the Great East Music Store, we pledge a commitment to you, our customers that we will offer you the very best in quality products with customer service. You ENGAGE with a purchase or participation with the Great East Music Store and Inspire Arts & Music. In turn, we are committed to engaging those dollars back to music and arts programs that benefit young people all across North America. At the Great East Music Store, EMPOWERING the community is our number one objective. It’s important to know that a  portion of all of the proceeds goes directly back to our parent company, Inspire Arts & Music. So you can feel amazing with your purchase today because the money you spend here will go to empowering people to cre-ate, dream, perform and inspire others through music. Help us keep music and arts programs alive...support the Great East Music Store.

We would like to thank our supporters and sponsors for all the generous contributions they have made! From volunteering time and resources to financial contributions and product sponsorship, our organization would not be as successful without you! Here’s to the start of a fantastic 75th Anniversary.

For over 70 years the Boston Crusaders have provided opportunities for marching members to enjoy drum & bugle corps competition while experiencing personal growth, friendship and fun. During that time, we have fielded thousands of members and created an environment where members are not just another dot on the field. The vitality and longevity of the Boston Crusaders is a direct result of people who have supported the Corps throughout our storied history. With your efforts, we are able to ensure that our Crusaders have the best experience possible -- one that changes their lives for the better.  To our drivers, sewing crew, merchandising team, fleet maintenance and enhancement crew, cook crew, medical team, and donors, thank you.

OUR DONORS ARE THE REASON...

THANK

YOUTo Our Volunteers and Donors

Thank you for giving to help develop our future leaders of tomorrow!

Monetary donations from caring individuals, no matter how small or how large, are the reason we are still in existence. Membership fees only make up a little over 30% of what it costs to run the corps on a yearly basis. And with your help we were able to make our year a success. We wanted to take a moment to recognize all of our supporters in this fiscal year. Without your support we could not provide a World Class experience for our performers.

MANY OF MY MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES FROM THE SUMMER OF 2014 COME FROM INTERACTIONS WITH VOLUNTEERS AND SUPPORT STAFF . YOU ARE THE PEOPLE WHO EMBRACE WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A CRUSADER, AND WHAT YOU GIVE ON A DAILY BASIS, MAKE THE MEMBER EXPERIENCE WHAT IT IS. I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THE COUNTLESS HOURS OF TIME, PLANNING, AND TRAVEL YOU PUT INTO THIS ORGANIZATION.

WE ARE ALREADY KNEE DEEP IN PREPARATIONS FOR THE 2015 SEASON. THE OPERATIONS TEAM LEAD BY JEFF PEARSON AND MARION MISTRETTA HAVE DONE A TREMENDOUS OF PLANING IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS IN PREPARATION FOR THE 2015 AUDITION CAMP CYCLE. AS WE BEGIN TO RELEASE MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE 2015 SEASON AND LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER, I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE EACH OF YOU TO JOIN US ON THE ROAD THIS SUMMER. ONE DAY IS ALL YOU NEED TO CREATE A LIFETIME OF STORIES AND EXPERIENCE.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GET INVOLVED PLEASE CONTACT US AT [email protected]

WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU ON THE ROAD!

SO HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?

GIVE BACK THROUGH VOLUNTEERINGSUSAN BOZARTH

THAT IT'S SOME OF THE HARDEST BUT DEFINITELY MOST REWARDING WORK I'VE EVER DONE.  NEARLY ALL MY VOLUNTEERING HAS BEEN SPENT ON THE FOOD CREW.  I HAVE WORKED ALONGSIDE THE BEST VOLUNTEERS ANYWHERE!  THE SUPPORT OF OUR BOARD MEMBERS, ALUMNI, ADMINISTRATION AND STAFF IS SECOND TO NONE!  THIS PAST SUMMER I WAS FORTUNATE TO GET TO KNOW MANY PAST ACQUAINTANCES BETTER AND HOPEFULLY CREATED LASTING FRIENDSHIPS EVEN IF WE CAN ONLY GET TOGETHER DURING DRUM CORPS SEASON.

OH THIS IS A HARD ONE!  THERE'S SO MANY.  WHAT COMES TO MIND MOST THOUGH IS THE WARMTH AND APPRECIATION THE KIDS EXPRESS EACH AND EVERY TIME THEY WALK THROUGH THE FOOD LINES.  THEY MAKE ALL OUR HARD WORK WORTHWHILE.  THEY ARE WHY I AM THERE AND SEEING THEM LIGHT UP AT MEALTIME EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE OFTEN EXHAUSTED IS A JOY.  LAST SPRING IN CASTLETON, VT I WAS IN THE STANDS DURING SECTIONALS PRACTICE NOT PAYING TOO MUCH ATTENTION AT THE TIME WHEN THE ENTIRE MELLOPHONE SECTION HUDDLED UP AND HOLLERED, "WE LOVE YOU

EASY, THE BOSTON CRUSADERS ARE FAMILY!  EVEN THOUGH MY GRANDSON AGED OUT THIS YEAR (SAD FACE), I DIDN'T!

I DON'T KNOW A WHOLE LOT OF WHAT GOES ON BEHIND THE SCENES BUT I SEE SO MUCH GROWTH AND EXCITEMENT IN THIS ORGANIZATION.  THIS YEAR AS BAC CELEBRATES IT'S 75TH ANNIVERSARY, I LOOK FORWARD TO SERVING YOU ONCE AGAIN. THE HARD WORK IS REWARDED EVERY DAY IN MANY WAYS.  GETTING THE CHANCE TO SEE THE SHOW PUT TOGETHER ONE PIECE AT A TIME AND THEN SEE IT PUT ON THE FIELD IS AMAZING.  I'M IN AWE OF ALL THE MEMBERS AND STAFF FOR ALL THEY GIVE TO ENTERTAIN US.  ANYONE WHO HAS A FEW HOURS, DAYS, WEEKS, OR A SUMMER TO VOLUNTEER WITH THE BOSTON CRUSADERS WILL NEVER FORGET IT.  I LOOK FORWARD TO VOLUNTEERING WITH YOU!

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED IN YOUR 3 YEARS AS A VOLUNTEER?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE VOLUNTEER STORY?

On Friday, October 3rd, the Crusader Classic 16th Annual Golf Challenge was held at Chemawa Golf Course in North Attleboro, Massachusetts.  On a beauti-ful New England Fall day, nearly 130 golfers, many who participate every year, came out to enjoy one last round before putting the clubs to rest for the winter. This years tournament featured alumni golfers from just about every decade of our rich history including several from the senior corps. We also had golfers from other local corps including the Defenders, North Star, Beverly Car-dinals, The Imperials, The Cadets, Alliance to name a few. While the clubs are now resting, the Corps begins its journey in this monumental year, the 75th An-niversary of the Boston Crusaders!  With their continued support, our Alumni and Friends have set the stage for a fabulous year of sharing our stories, our cherished memories, our lifelong friendships, all while paying it forward to sup-port the next and future generations of Crusaders.  This event is our first event in a year that will be rich with history and tradition, celebrating the past, present and future of one of the most storied and oldest drums & bugle corps in America.

We would like to thank our Associate Sponsors, Broadridge Financial Solutions and Fiserv, both long-time supporters of our tournament and the Corps.  Thanks also to the Board of Directors of Inspire Arts & Music, our Tournament Sponsors and Tee Sponsors, a complete list can be found on the Boston Crusaders website in our Tournament Program Book.  Our thanks to the staff of I AM and our tournament volunteers, you continue to be the backbone of this organization…and you are truly the best!

What can you do to get back in touch with the Corps We Love?Regardless of when you marched, we challenge you to see what you can do to contribute to your community and to give back to the Corps we Love.

What can you do?

Come check out our events across the country. Any event you attend supports our organization, so why not come meet up with some old friends, reminisce old stories, and enjoy the 2015 edition of our Corps? All of our home shows will feature alumni events and our Crusader Country gives you the best seats to the hottest shows in DCI. Your purchase of Crusader Country tickets goes to supporting the Corps.

Volunteer.

The office team will be volunteering for the corps this summer. Doing what and when? Well, that’s a surprise, but we challenge you to do the same. Only have a day or two? That’s great too, we’d still love to have you! Even if it’s only a few hours when we pass through your home town, you’re more than welcome to come check us out and even lend a helping hand!

Donate.

Have some spare change laying around?  Think about starting a coin/spare change jar and donat-ing the proceeds.  Does your employer offer matching donations?  If they do, your contribution will have double the impact!

Be in touch.

Come see the Corps rehearse and perform.  Our members love every opportunity they get to inter-act with alumni and supporters.  Come visit; we’ll all appreciate it!

SENIOR CORPS UPDATEThe Crusaders Senior Drum and Bugle Corps will be celebrat-ing our 24th year in exhibition in 2015. We are made up of members from all over the New England area and we carry on the traditions of this storied organization. In addition to marching in 13 parades each year, the corps performs in four big shows, bringing back the song from years gone by.

We are always welcoming new members to join our great drum corps family. The Senior Corps is drum corps for older kids and we have a lot of fun! We are a big family and we practice to be the best and we will continue to do what we love to do as long as we can. We have a slogan that I started years ago that says: “The Crusaders Senior Corps… Where you don't age out. You die.”

2015 will be a great year for the organization. We are all glad to be part of it. The Crusad-ers Seniors love the fact that we are one of the only senior corps that still has a “Top 10” junior corps in the country. We are very proud of that. We help our kids anyway we can during their busy season. The kids call us OLD School and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thank You,

Jack La Selva President/ Drum MajorCrusaders Senior Drum and Bugle Corps

Lenox, MA- On July 6, 2015, members of the Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps, the third oldest drum corps in America, celebrating their 75th anniversary; and the sixteen-time Drum Corps International World Champion Blue Devils from Concord, California will perform a one-of-a-kind concert with the Boston Pops Brass and Percussion.

Being held at the historic Tanglewood Music Center, Koussevitzky Music Shed, this exclusive night of performances will feature full and combined concerts from The Blue Devils, Boston Crusaders, and Boston Pops Brass and Percussion. Director of Artistic Planning Dennis Alves states, “We are so looking forward to combining the wonderful artists of the Boston Pops Brass and Percussion sections together with the fine musicians of two of the worlds top drum corps, The Blue Devils and the Boston Crusaders.  The thought of experiencing these three great ensembles performing individually and together in the marvelous acoustics of the Koussevitzy Music Shed at Tanglewood is breathtaking.  People will be talking about this singular event for years to come!"

The Boston Crusaders will team up with JetBlue to bring The Blue Devils to the New England area to celebrate their 75th Anniversary with special performances that be-gin with an all-star Drum Corps International performance at Gillette Stadium on July 2nd, and cap-off with the Tanglewood performance on July 6th.

Executive Director David Gibbs states, “The Blue Devils are extremely excited to share in this once in a lifetime performance at Tanglewood with the Boston Crusad-ers! This is a great opportunity for the Blue Devils to perform with a world class pro-fessional ensemble.”

Boston Crusaders Corps Director Andy Waldukat adds, “The July 6th performance culminates a week of celebration for the Crusaders 75th Anniversary season.
