BOSTON COLLEGE vs. VERMONTBoston College, Hockey East’s member with the most tournament titles (11), was dealt its second-consecutive quarterfinal round exit when Vermont took down the Eagles in three games in last year’s series. BC has the opportunity to avenge last year’s early exit when the Catamounts come to tow for the 2016 Hockey East quarterfinal series, marking the second-straight year BC and UVM will clash in this round and the third time in four years. Prior to last year’s series, Vermont was the only team BC was unblemished against in the conference playoffs, owning a 6-0 mark before UVM won games two and three to advantage to the TD Garden. Before last year’s quarterfinal series, BC knocked off Vermont four-straight times in the quarterfinals (2006 and 2013), shut out Vermont in the 2010 Hockey East semifinal (3-0) and came away with the Hockey East Tournament title in 2008 with another blanking of Vermont, 4-0. Boston College has already swept the Catamounts on the road this season with respective 3-1 and 4-1 victories (Feb. 19-20) in Burlington, Vt. Despite losing the three-game series to Vermont in last year’s quarters, Boston College still owns a 17-4 mark over the Catamounts at Kelley Rink since UVM joined the league. In the overall series, BC possesses a 39-15-5 mark with a 26-7-3 win-loss total in Hockey East play.

CAT CALLSVermont finished ninth in Hockey East this season, posting a 6-13-3 mark in conference play and is currently 14-20-3 overall heading into the quarterfinals. After Boston College swept Vermont on Feb. 19-20 at Gutterson Fieldhouse, the Catamounts traveled to Merrimack and dropped another pair but rebounded this past weekend in the first round of the Hockey East playoffs. The Catamounts took on Connecticut at the XL Center in the first round and ousted UConn with 2-1 and 4-3 counts to earn a trip to The Heights. This marks Vermont’s 10th showing in the league playoffs as Vermont has put together a 14-19 mark in 33 Hockey East postseason contests. Vermont has made it to the semifinals on three occasions with its most recent last season and reached the finals once, when UVM lost to the Eagles in 2008 (4-0). Mario Puskarich, who scored a goal against BC in the regular season series, leads the Catamounts’ scoring efforts with 10 goals and 17 assists. Sophomore Jarrid Privitera is tied with Puskarich in goals scored (10) but the Catamounts have not gotten much scoring for anywhere else. UVM is 11th in the league in scoring (2.14 goals per game) and 53rd, nationally. Freshman Packy Munson and Junior Mike Santaguida has split time in net for the Catamounts, supporting a defense that ranks 28th in the NCAA (2.65 gpg) and seventh in Hockey East. Both special teams’ units have struggled as only four teams in college hockey have a lower power play conversion rate than UVM (11.9 percent – 16-of-135). The penalty kill rests 10th in Hockey East, stopping opponents at a rate of 78.4 percent (120-of-153).

BEANPOT TROTBoston College won its sixth Beanpot trophy in seven years, and 20th overall as the Eagles defeated archrival Boston University in historic fashion on Feb. 8, 2016 at TD Garden. Alex Tuch delivered his fourth-career game-winning goal in overtime to break up the defensive standoff 1:57 into the extra session.

UNBEANLIEVABLEMonday's title game marked the 256th installment of the Beanpot tournament. In the 255 games prior, there had NEVER been a 1-0 final score. It was also only the second-ever 1-0 game between the Eagles and Terriers since the start of Hockey

East (Dec. 2, 2006). It marked only the fourth shutout in Beanpot championship game history and first since 1981 (also in 1962 and 1967). Boston College had

never shutout BU in the Beanpot championship. Monday's win marked the seventh shutout in Beanpot history for BC and also pushed the Eagles

over the mark in a season for most shutouts in a year (9).

CLOSING IN ON BEANPOT LOREBoston College won its sixth Beanpot trophy in seven years

(2010-16), closing in on Boston University's mark of eight pots in nine tournaments from 1995 to 2003.

FREE BEANSNine of the 43 Beanpot contests between Boston College and Boston University have gone to overtime. The Eagles hold a huge 7-2 advantage in that department,

including the last two championship meetings. Before Alex Tuch's winner, Billy Arnold took down the Terriers in

overtime in the 2012 Beanpot championship.

ANOTHER ONE FOR THE BIOGRAPHYHead coach Jerry York earned another record on Feb. 8, 2016,

when he surpassed his former coach at Boston College, Snooks Kelley, for most Beanpots won the Heights. York won his ninth trophy,

which stands as the most in school history of any other coach.

Demko’s historic run tied Blaine Lacher of Lake Superior State for posting six shutouts in seven games, marking only the second time in the history of college hockey something of that magnitude has been achieved. Below are the runs posted by each goaltender:

SHUSH.Demko’s first shutout streak started in the third period at Rensselaer on Oct. 11, 2015, where he played shutout hockey for 206 minutes and two seconds (206:02), denoting the 20th-longest stretch of zero goals allowed in the history of the game. At the collegiate level, York is the 55th head coach to reach 1,000-career victories and the first to do so in college hockey. York remains the winningest coach in the history of the game. In his 1,000-career victories, Jerry York has defeated 69 different programs spread out through his tenures at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College. York also won his ninth Beanpot trophy on Feb. 8, 2016, checking off another record in the BC annals.

PRESEASON PRECEDENTBoston College was selected as the preseason favorite to win the Hockey East regular-season title as voted on by the league coaches and announced on Sept. 21. The Eagles received 115 overall votes and picked up seven of the league’s 12 first-place votes. The Eagles’ pick as the preseason favorite marks the seventh time in the last eight seasons and the 14th time in the last 17 occasions that BC has been picked as the preseason favorite, or co-favorite, to win the league title.

POLE POSITIONBC was tabbed the unit to beat as the Eagles earned the No. 1 preseason ranking in both the USCHO.com and USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine polls unveiled on Sept. 28 and Oct. 5, respectively. This marks the seventh time the Eagles have been slotted as the top position in the preseason. The last time Boston College was ranked No. 1 in the country was towards the end of the 2013-14 season when the Eagles ran off a 19-game unbeaten mark, winning 17 games and skating to a pair of draws over the course of the run. Boston College finished No. 13 and No. 14, respectively, in the USCHO.com and USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine final polls upon conclusion of the 2014-15 season.

Coaches that are Boston College hockey alums – Jerry York, Greg Brown and Marty McInnis. All three have been inducted into Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

With the addition of Michael Matheson to the Florida Panthers' roster, the Eagles are tied with Michigan as having the most alumni skate in the NHL with 20 thus far

NCAA Tournament victories in the last 18 years. That total is 11 victories more than North Dakota, which has totaled 23 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles are tied for the most wins in college hockey. North Dakota has racked up 499 while Michigan sits at 495 wins.

Jerry York’s overall record is 1,008-596-110 (.620) in his 44th season as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division 1 coach in the history of college hockey. York is 34-12 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 39 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.

NCAA Championships in the last 14 years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Frozen Four appearances in the last 18 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (11), North Dakota (nine), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five) and Michigan State (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.

Recently departed defenseman Noah Hanifin and incoming freshman forward Colin White were selected by the Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators, respectively (fifth and 21st overall) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 16th and 17th Eagles in the last 28 years to have been drafted in the first round of the NHL. They join Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves (29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010), Michael Matheson (23rd, 2012) and Alex Tuch (18th, 2014) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Ian McCoshen and Thatcher Demko returned as members of the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Montreal and Toronto, Canada, while Noah Hanifin and Alex Tuch earned their spot for the first time. Incoming freshman Miles Wood was also a member, upping BC’s representation to five Eagles on last year’s squad. With the addition of Hanifin, Tuch and Wood, the BC trio became the 25th, 26th and 27th Eagle participants in World Junior play under head coach Jerry York.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in six seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

BC has competed in five of the last 10 national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).
