Washington Capitals: Media Notes

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTSStreaking John - John Carlson (8g, 23a in 21 games) is currently on a five-game point streak (1g, 7a). Carlson has recorded a point in17 of his 21 games and 10 multi point games. Carlson leads all defensemen in goals, assists and points this season and leads the NHLin assists. Carlson became the sixth defenseman to require 20 or fewer team games to reach the 30-point mark in a season and thefirst since Al MacInnis (1990-91 with Calgary).

Torrid Pace - With 31 points in 21 games, Carlson is on pace for 121 points over an 82-game season. Only five defensemen in NHL

history have recorded more than 100 points in a season (Bobby Orr: six times; Paul Coffey: five times; Denis Potvin, Al MacInnis and

Brian Leetch: each once). The Capitals' franchise record for points in a season by a defenseman is 81 points (Larry Murphy, 1986-

87: 23g, 58a).

Passing Greats - Carlson (98g, 335a, 433 points) passed Scott Stevens (98g, 331a, 429 points) for second place on the franchise’s

all-time regular-season points list among defensemen on Nov. 9 vs. Vegas and for second on the assist list. Carlson now only trails

Calle Johansson (113g, 361a, 474 points) in points. He's also one goal shy of passing Stevens (98) for the fifth-most goals in

franchise history by a defenseman.

TOI - Carlson ranks fifth in the NHL in ice time per game (25:21). He has led the Capitals in ice time in 20 of their 21 games.  Cool Since '82 - The Capitals now stand at 1,474 wins since the 1982-83 season (1,474-1,060-201-154), tied with the Bruins (1,474)for the most wins in the NHL during that span. That season, current Team President Dick Patrick joined the organization as a minorityowner and member of the team’s board of directors. Prior to Patrick joining Washington, the Capitals had never made the playoffs. InPatrick’s 36 seasons with the Capitals, the team has reached the playoffs 29 times. The Capitals had three different general managersduring the first eight seasons prior to Patrick's arrival, and they’ve had just three in the 37 years with Patrick since. During Patrick'stenure, the Capitals have won 12 division titles (1988-89, 1999-00, 2000-01, 2007-08, 2008-09. 2009-10, 2010-11, 2012-13, 2015-16,2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19), three Presidents' Trophies (2009-10, 2015-16, 2016-17), two Prince of Wales Trophies (1997-98, 2017-18) and one Stanley Cup (2017-18). (s/t Ben Raby) Holtbeast - Braden Holtby stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced in the 2-1 shootout victory over Philadelphia on Wednesday, his mostrecent outing. Holtby has recorded a point in each of his last nine starts (8-0-1), and his nine total wins this season are tied for the mostin the NHL. Over his last four games, Holtby is 4-0-0 with a 1.96 goals against average and a .938 save percentage. In the month ofNovember in his career, Holtby is 49-20-5 with a 2.35 goals against average and a .923 save percentage, his third-lowest goals againstaverage and his second-highest save percentage in a given month. Since 2014-15, Holtby has recorded 206 wins, 20 more thanNashville's Pekka Rinne, who ranks second. Against Boston in his career, Holtby is 16-3-0 with a 1.80 goals against average anda .946 save percentage, his second-lowest goal against average and his highest save percentage against any single team. Road Warriors - The Capitals lead the NHL in road wins (9) this season and have earned a point in their last eight road games (7-0-1).The Capitals' hold a record of 104-53-18 on the road over the last five seasons and lead the NHL in wins and points (226) during thatspan. Alex Ovechkin has scored 12 of his 14 goals on the road this season. Ovechkin's 342 career regular-season road goals are theseventh-most in NHL history, trailing Marcel Dionne (346). Additionally, no active goaltender with more than five career road games haswon a higher percentage of his away games than Braden Holtby (122 wins in 207 games, 58.9 percent).

Four Road OT Wins - The Capitals have won four-straight road games in overtime (Oct. 25 at Vancouver through Nov. 13 at

Philadelphia), the second time in NHL history this has occurred (Vancouver: four road overtime wins, Jan. 10 through Feb. 7, 2012).

Two of the overtime games were won without a shootout (Jan. 29 at Toronto, Nov. 7 at Florida). Additionally, the Capitals' last five

road games have resulted in overtime (Oct. 24 at Edmonton through Nov. 13 at Philadelphia), and the Capitals have earned points in

all five efforts (5-0-1), the 11th time in NHL history this has occurred.  Special Team Specialists - The Capitals rank eighth in both the power play (17 for 71, 23.9 percent) and the penalty kill (63 for 74,85.1 percent). The Capitals and the Edmonton Oilers are the only two teams to rank in the top-8 in both respective categories. The

Capitals are 10-2-1 this season when they score a power play goal. This season, the Capitals have yet to allow two or more power playgoals against them in a game. That's the first time since 2015-16 that the Capitals have started a season with 19 games withoutallowing two power play goals (2015-16: 37 games). The Capitals' penalty kill ranks sixth this season (85.7 percent, 54 for 63), andthrough 19 games last season, Washington ranked 28th (73.2 percent, 52 for 71). QUICK HITSEastern Conference Dominance - This season, the Capitals are 7-1-1 against Eastern Conference opponents and 4-1-0 against theAtlantic Division.  Down but Never Out on the Road - This season on the road, the Capitals are 3-0-1 in games where they trail after the first period and2-0-0 in games where they trail after the second period. Washington is the only team to have not suffered a loss in regulation in boththe first and second period on the road after trailing in either period. League Leaders - The Capitals’ 79 goals through 21 games rank first in the NHL, and the 48 goals they have scored at five-on-five aretied with Montreal for the most in the NHL. Effective D - Chandler Stephenson has only been on the ice for three goals against at five-on-five, and his 1.05 on-ice goals againstper 60 minutes of play rank first on the Capitals and 12th in the NHL among players with at least 150 minutes of five-on-five play. Versus OpponentVersus Boston - The Capitals have won 14 of their last 15 games against Boston. Washington has outscored Boston 45-22 over that15-game span. Nicklas Backstrom has earned 40 points (8g, 32a) in 37 career games against the Bruins and has earned a point in 12of his last 15 games against Boston (4g, 15a). In addition, Backstrom has earned 19 points (4g, 15a) in 14 games against the Bruinssince the start of the 2014-15 season, the third-most points in the NHL against Boston during that span.
