Technical Overview of the Boson License Server ComponentsThere are two primary components to the Boson License Server: the Boson License Server, which can be configured with the Boson License Server Administrator and is discussed in this document, and the Boson NetSim License Server Client.

LicenseServerExample

The main component is the Boson License Server. The license server consists of an element that runs as a server service on Windows® 2000 Server or Professional, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 (not Windows NT/95/98/Me) and a special management utility, called the Boson License Server Administrator, that controls and maintains the server service.

The other component, the Boson NetSim License Server Client, runs as a regular stand-alone Windows program on Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP (no Windows server operating systems). Each time the client is rebooted, it obtains its registration and license to operate from the license server.

Boson License Server AdministratorIn order to distribute licenses from the Boson License Server, you must first open the Boson License Server Administrator and download licenses over the Internet from Boson Software’s validation server. You must provide the corporate key code that was given to you at the time of purchase.

Your organization’s local license server contacts Boson’s validation file server using HTTPS over TCP port 443. This procedure downloads valid client licenses and marks the key code “used” on Boson’s vali-dation file server, making those licenses available on your organization’s local license server. The license server on your internal network is now ready to distribute the licenses to client workstations on your local network.

By default, the client-to-license server port is TCP 813 when the direct IP address unicast mode is used (or UDP 10814 and 10815 when search/broadcast mode is used). The network administrator should change these default ports prior to installing the Boson License Server Administrator software if these ports are used by other applications or server services running on the file server.

Boson NetSim License Server ClientFor each license purchased for distribution by the Boson License Server, there can be one client work-station running at a time. The Boson NetSim client must first be installed on a workstation in order for a license to be utilized on that workstation.

Each time the Boson NetSim client is run on each workstation, the workstation user must agree to be bound by the terms of the Authorized User Agreement. Afterward, the client will ask for the IP address and port of the license server (as well as the appropriate user name/password combination if required).

As soon as the client has a valid license, it will run in “full version” (unrestricted) mode until the program is shut down. Keepalives are sent from the client to the license server every 60 seconds. As long as the license server receives a keepalive every 100 seconds, the license will remain assigned to the worksta-tion running the client. However, if the user exits the program or the workstation is disconnected from the network or is shut down for any reason, the license server will free the client license for use on another workstation.

License Server SetupBoson License Server Prerequisites• Purchase the corporate key for the Boson License Server.• Analyze the default server service port requirements of the computer on which you plan to install

the Boson License Server, and either change the listening ports or choose a different server for installation.

• You can download the Boson License Server Administrator software and the Boson NetSim software from the NetSim License Server download page of Boson.com.

• Install the Boson NetSim License Server Administrator onto your local Windows server. • Download the licenses from the remote Boson validation server over the Internet using the License

Downloader using your corporate code.

Obtaining and Returning LicensesAdding (Downloading) LicensesThe first time you run the Boson License Server Administrator, no licenses will be stored in the server’s license database. However, you can download the client licenses that will be granted to your local Boson NetSim client workstations by entering the appropriate key code and clicking Download All Licenses when prompted.

In the Boson License Server Administrator, click License Downloader to temporarily pause the license server service and launch the License Download dialog box shown below:

License Download dialogbox

Note: Before you type in your key code and click the Download All Licenses button, make sure you have established an active Internet connection with HTTPS port 443 open and available. If that port is not open and available, you will not be able to validate your key code or download any client licenses.

The following are the basic steps required to serve client licenses from the license server: 1. Enter the corporate key code that was provided to you at the time of purchase.2. Click the Download All Licenses button to validate your corporate key code over the Internet.3. Select I Agree to the Boson License Agreement.4. Click Next.5. Click OK when the message box appears showing the quantity of NetSim licenses downloaded.6. Click Finish to return to the Boson License Server Administrator.

Page 7: Boson License Server Administrator Manual Server Administrator Manual.p… · 8 Boson License Server Administrator Manual The Boson License Server Administrator Administrator Interface

7 Boson License Server Administrator Manual

If you entered the correct corporate key code and the license server was able to connect to Boson’s validation servers, you will notice that the number of licenses displayed in the Number of Boson NetSim Licenses field will change to reflect the number of client licenses that you just downloaded, as shown below:

License Downloaddialogboxshowingthat10licenseshavebeendownloaded

Be sure to keep your key code safe and secure because you need it each time you want to acquire or release licenses to and from the Boson validation server over the Internet.

Returning (Uploading) LicensesIn the event that you would like to uninstall or remove the Boson License Server service, including moving the Boson License Server Administrator software to another physical computer, you must first return your client licenses to the validation server. Because the Boson validation server released licenses to your local license server, you will lose all of your licenses if you do not return them to Boson’s validation server before you uninstall or remove the Boson License Server from your system.

To return the client licenses to the validation servers, load the Boson License Server Administrator, and click the License Downloader button. In the License Download dialog box, type the same corporate key code you used to add licenses, and then click the Return All Licenses button. All of the client licenses that were associated with the corporate key code will be returned to the validation server over the Inter-net. If you are using individual user authentication when you return your licenses to the server, your user names will also return to the server. The next time you download the licenses on another machine, all the user names and passwords will download to the new machine as well.

Warning: If you need to re-install your server at a future date, you must first use the Return All Licenses function. Failure to do so will render the corporate key code and corresponding client licenses unable to be validated. If this happens, you must contact Boson’s customer service in order to continue distributing licenses.

Note: Make sure you use the Return All Licenses feature for each and every corporate key code that you have purchased and used.

License ManagerCertain versions of the Boson License Server require all licenses to have assigned user names and pass-words. The Boson License Server Administrator allows you to set up the user name/password accounts for any person who will need access to the software.

This option is not available for all Boson License Server users; it is only available to the accounts that require user authentication on a per-student or per-employee basis. If your license does not require indi-vidual user authentication, the License Manager option will not be available from the Tools menu.

License Managerinterface

Use the License Manager interface of the Boson License Server Administrator, accessed by selecting License Manager from the Tools menu. To create the user names and passwords (passwords are not required) for each user, you should click Add Users which will display the Validate User dialog box.

If a user already has a Boson account, use the e-mail address of the user’s account on Boson.com as the user name. If a user does not have a Boson account, a new account can be created on the Boson Online Account page of the Boson Web site. A valid Boson.com user account is required in order for that user to be added.

If the user has a valid e-mail address associated with a Boson.com user account, you will see the fol-lowing message informing you that the account was valid and a password was created for you. Although the user name must match a valid Boson.com account, the password for the user account on the license server does not need to match the user’s Boson.com account password.

If the License Server is unable to add the new user, you might see the following message. It is likely that the format of the e-mail address is correct but that the e-mail address is not associated with a valid Boson.com account. In order to add a user, you must include a valid Boson.com account e-mail address. To ensure that the user has a valid Boson.com e-mail address, you should request that the user create a Boson.com account.

After a user has been successfully verified, select the corporate key that corresponds to the product license key you want the user to have access to. In order for a person to have access to a license that requires individual user authentication, he or she must have a user account for the NetSim Server corpo-rate key they are trying to connect with. Although the user name must match a valid Boson.com account, the password for the user account on the license server does not need to match the user’s Boson.com account password.

Connecting from the Boson NetSim License Server Cli-ent to the Boson License ServerThe Boson NetSim License Server Client program allows a user to connect to the server that is running the Boson License Server software. The client maintains the connection with the license server while the user performs simulations on the Boson NetSim.

Before a user can begin using the Boson NetSim License Server Client, you must provide an IP address, and connection port information, and the version (CCNA or CCNP) to the user. If your license requires in-dividual user authentication, the user will be required to provide a user name and password that matches what has been configured on the NetSim license server. For other types of licenses, you might want to request that each user provide a user name for identification purposes. If the user does not specify a user name, a random one will be provided when he tries to connect. Additionally, the user will be required to specify a password to connect to the server if a client password has been enabled to secure the connec-

tion to license servers that do not require individual user authentication. Please note that the password to connect to this type of license server is not case sensitive.

If the license server requires user authentication, the user will be assigned a unique user name and pass-word, which he will need to use when connecting to the Boson NetSim License Server Client. You should advise the user not to share this information with anyone. Only one connection to the license server can be established for every user name/password combination.

A user can locate a remote server IP address automatically if you have enabled the search feature in the License Server. To enable this feature, you should click Tools > Server Options. On the Connections tab, select the Enabled option and click OK.

Server Options Connections tab

When the user first launches the Boson NetSim License Server Client, he will see the window below. He must specify all the information that you provided him before he can connect and begin using the Boson NetSim License Server Client. If you have not provided an IP address but have enabled the search fea-ture as noted above, the user can click that button to locate the server IP address.

After the user supplies the connection information, he should click Connect to initiate license acquisi-tion. If the configuration is correct and a license is available, the License Server will respond by allowing the connection to be made; if no license is available, the connection will be denied. If the connection is denied, the user will receive a message explaining the reason. See the Client Troubleshooting section for common error messages a client could receive.

Once the connection is established, the user should click Continue to continue loading the Boson NetSim.

Connected UsersThe license monitor list on the License Server is updated every 15 seconds. The list displays each user who is currently connected to the License Server application actively and is using a license. The second exhibit below shows the viewable information for each client, including the user name used to log in to the License Server and the computer name and IP address of the computer the user is connecting from.

Server OptionsThe Security tab of the Server Options dialog box, which can be accessed by clicking Tools > Server Options, provides additional security by enabling you to require a password for all license requests. Some versions of the Boson License Server require controlled access. If you are not using those ver-sions, you can implement some access control by enabling a client password. This means that all the clients MUST have the correct password in order to check out a license from the License Server.

Server Options Security tab

Note: If you are using the controlled user access method, this option is disabled. To set user names and passwords for security, select License Manager from the Tools menu.

Logging can be useful if you want to know what is going on within the server. A log file called license.log is stored within the application directory. On the Logging tab of the Server Options dialog box, you can configure the log file to take note of everything that goes on or to note only when errors occur. You can also limit the size of the log file; it is recommended that you do not exceed 1,024 KB unless you intend to perform extensive logging and need the log for tracking purposes. There is nothing wrong with using larger log sizes, but if you do not plan on actively checking the log and keeping hard copies, there is no need for a large file.

AppendicesAppendix A: Administrator-Side Troubleshooting and Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: Is it possible to circumvent the add/remove procedure and just copy the license database file to an-other server in order to use it with my other license server?

A: No. Server-specific information is used in generating the client license file, so moving the file to anoth-er server will render it inoperable. It is also against your license agreement to use the server’s license file on another computer without using the supported “move” method. Simply perform a Return All Licenses and then the Add License operation within the Boson License Server Administrator for every key code to copy the license database file to another server.

Q: Do I need an active Internet connection established every time I run the license server?

A: No. An active Internet connection is required on your local license server only when you are adding licenses or returning your key codes to the Boson validation server.

Q: What will happen if I forget about a service running on my server and a port conflict occurs?

A: When the license server service starts and detects another service conflicting on its listening port, the license server service terminates and an entry similar to the following is made in the license.log file:

06/06/2004 | 19:53 | STARTUP SEQUENCE | Preparing Connections06/06/2004 | 19:53 | SERVICE START SEQUENCE ERROR | Service Failed to Start (10048|Address in use)

Q: Where is the license.log file, and what format is it in?

A: The license.log file is located by default in the C:\Program Files\Boson Software\Boson License Server 7 folder. The format is plain text with the following headers: DATE | TIME IN 24HR | CURRENT SE-QUENCE/SUMMARY OF CODE AREA | DESCRIPTION OF THE LOG

Q: Do I need to return my keys before I can download new ones that are available to me?

A: Not if the keys are for the same server type, but it is recommended.

Q: I have a firewall running on the server. What ports must be open in order to access the Boson License Server from the client machines?

A: By default, TCP port 813 should be open, but this port number can be reset from within the Connec-tions tab of the Server Options dialog box. You will need to open UDP ports 10814 and 10815 if you want the search capabilities to be operational; these values are not changeable. You will also need to

Page 18: Boson License Server Administrator Manual Server Administrator Manual.p… · 8 Boson License Server Administrator Manual The Boson License Server Administrator Administrator Interface

18 Boson License Server Administrator Manual

allow local access to UDP ports 10819 and 10820 for proper communication between the administrative client and the server. The client is a local client, though, and cannot be used on a remote computer.

Q: I just reformatted my hard drive, reinstalled my operating system, and reinstalled the Boson License Server Administrator. Why does it say I have no more licenses available?

A: When you performed the reformat, you lost the license database that contained all of your licenses. In the event that you have lost your license database, call Boson Support at 877-333-3926 and we will reinitialize your account.

Q: Is there a way to install or uninstall the License Server service without using the installer?

A: Yes. The Boson License Server Administrator has a command-line install feature. To install the service, type bAdmin -install at the command prompt. To uninstall, type bAdmin -uninstall. For more informa-tion, type bAdmin -help.

Appendix B: Client-Side Troubleshooting and Error Messages

Error 10060 – The attempt to connect timed outThe cause of this error could be in invalid IP address or that the firewall on the client is blocking access to the Boson License Server.

Error 10061 – Connection forcefully rejectedThe cause of this error could be that the server is not up, the firewall is blocking the Boson NetSim Li-cense Server Client from communicating with the Boson License Server, or the incorrect port has been configured.

Connection Error – There was an error making contact with the serverAfter clicking OK to close the message box, the user should receive a message with more detail about the cause of the error, such as, “There is no active account for that user name/password combination, or your account is expired. Please contact your administrator.” A Boson account for the user must be set up and the user might need to be added to the list of approved users before contact can be made with the server. See the License Manager section of this document for more information.

Boson NetSim – Your connection to the license server has been lost. This software will now return to demo mode. The cause of this error could be that the License Server is down or that a firewall is blocking access from the client to the Boson License Server. To solve this issue, you might need to restart the Boson License Server service or check and fix the connection or the firewall issue.

Default Settings

LogicalDiagramofPorts

Clients in Direct-IP Mode By default, NetSim clients send on TCP port 813 to the license server service. The TCP default listening port for the license server service can be changed easily in the Boson License Server Administrator. The server service returns acknowledgement on a random available high port (stateful firewalls should allow this).

Clients in Search Mode Step 1: NetSim clients broadcast to UDP port 10814; the license server service listens on UDP port 10814.

Step 2: The license server service unicasts on UDP port 10815; NetSim clients listen on UDP port 10815.

Boson License Server Administrator • The license server service listens to the Administrator on UDP port 10820.• The Administrator listens to the service on UDP port 10821.The Administrator and the license server service communicate internally on the server itself, using UDP ports for additional features planned for the future. You cannot yet run the Boson License Server Adminis-trator on any computer other than the license server, but this is planned for the future.

Note: Unlike the TCP value, the UDP values are not configurable.

Appendix D: Windows XP SP2 and Later Windows Operating Sys-tem IssuesWith the release of Microsoft’s second major service pack for its Windows XP operating system, Microsoft introduced a number of new, or at least improved, security features. The main one for discussion is the Windows Firewall, which is now turned on by default. The Boson NetSim License Server Client will not be as much of an issue as the Boson License Server itself because the server starts before the user logs on; hence, you are never notified that it is trying to make a network connection. When you launch the Boson NetSim License Server Client, you might be asked to unblock the program. Click the Unblock button.

You will have to manually add the Boson License Server to your Windows Firewall Exceptions list. To do this, open Control Panel. Select Windows Firewall if classic view is being used; if category view, which is the default view for Windows XP, is being used, select Security Center followed by Windows Firewall.

In the Windows Firewall dialog box, select the Exceptions tab, which is shown below:

TheExceptionstabandtheAdd a Programwindow

On the Exceptions tab, click the Add Program button. On the Add a Program page, click the Browse button, navigate to the installation folder for the Boson License Server (typically C:\Program Files\Boson Software\Boson License Server 7), and then select bServer.exe in order to give the software permission to send and receive information.
