Yeah...right!! February proved to be a short but busy month -Valentines Day, Presidents Day, Black History month and most importantly, we started a new program. We raised our resident services up several notches with the help of our new Easter Seals trainee, res- ident Bonnie Bonanno who will be concentrating on tenant hospitali- ty and activities. Right off the bat, we have introduced arts and crafts on Mondays, movie time on Wednesdays and everybody’s favorite Bingo on Fridays! Bonnie, in her inimitable style has a welcoming cup of coffee and goodies waiting for you so you can socialize and chit chat over your morning cup of coffee! Please consider coming down and becoming a regular guest at our many activities. We have several other ideas which we are mulling over. Please feel free to make your suggestions. We value your input. RUNI SRIWARDENA THE BEWARE THE “IDES OF MARCH”!!! The Ides of march (Latin Idus Martii) refers to the 15th day in the month of March according to the Roman Calendar and most likely referring to the full moon. The word Ides is Latin for “Idus” and means “half division” in relation to a month. This is a word used popularly to refer to the 15th or the middle of the month. However, in the modern context, the term Ides of March is best known as the date that Julius Caesar was murdered in 44 B.C. Caesar was stabbed 23 times and killed in the Roman Senate by a group of conspirators led by Marcus Junious Bru- tus and Gaius Cassius Longinus. This group is believed to have included 60 more co-conspirators. According to Plutarch, a seer had predicted that Caesar would be harmed no later than the Ides of March and on his way to the Theater of Pompey, the place Caesar would be as- sassinated. Caesar met that seer and joked “the Ides of March have come”, meaning to say that the prophecy had not been fulfilled, to which the seer replied “Ay, Caesar; but not gone.” This meeting between Caesar and the seer is famously dram- atized in William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caeasar, where Caesar is warned by the soothsayer to “beware the Ides of March.” Caesar dies with the words “Et tu, Brute? Then fall Caesar!”. The soothsayer’s warning to Julius Caesar, “Beware the Ides of March,” has forever imbued that date with a sense of foreboding. The Ides falls on the 15th day of March, May, July and October; in the rest of the months of the year, it is the 13th.

COMMISSIONER’S CORNER Hello, my name is Raysa Martinez Kruger, and I am a new commissioner of the Highland Park Housing Authority. I was born in the Dominican Republic and raised there and in Puerto Rico. I came to New Jersey to attend college at Rutgers in the 1990’s, and since then I have called this area and Highland Park home. I am very excited to serve on the HPHA board. For two years after finishing college I worked for a housing non-profit organization in New Brunswick informing tenants and landlords of their rights and responsibilities under New Jersey law. This work convinced me that we as a society must strive to provide safe, decent and affordable housing to everyone, as a matter of public policy. When I went back to school for a graduate degree, I continued to study housing policy. I currently work as an analyst for the New Jersey State Legislature, and spend much of my spare time working on my dissertation, which I expect to finish soon. Although I have not been doing housing work recently, being part of this commission is a wonderful opportunity for me to continue to learn about housing and to work with my fellow commissioners, the staff, and the residents on this important mission. On another note, I really enjoy reading this newslet-ter, especially the poems submitted by residents and staff. I wanted to share with you one of my favorite poems, which my grandmother taught me when I was a little girl, by a Cuban poet Jose Marti, translated from Spanish to English:

“I have a white rose to tend In July as in January;

I give it to the true friend Who offers his frank hand to me. And to the cruel one whose blows

Break the heart by which I live, Thistle nor thorn do I give:

For him, too, I have a white rose.”

I look forward to seeing you all at the HPHA meetings, and to saying hello when we run into each other in town. Best Wishes, Raysa Martinez Commissioner

Please extend a hand of friendship to Evelyn.

I would like to take a couple of inches in our monthly newsle er to thank the people on the 2nd floor, Frida, MaryAnne and Chuck. I think I was in St. Peters for 9 hours. Chuck came and sat with me to chat for awhile un l they were ready to put me under. He would not go home. I had to yell at him. A er the surgery he picked me up and saw to it that I was in and ok. Chuck, you are my brother and angel. Frida, doing everything she could to help me even though she was in terrible pain herself. Mary Anne, also with medical issues of her own, shopping for me, calling me to tell me when my favorite programs were on. I love you guys. The 2nd floor rules! Linda DeGenova, 2-P

AUDREY LESUER PARK TERRACE, 215 SO. 6TH Ave Hi, my name Is Audrey Lesuer. I was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on De-cember 22nd 1959 and grew up in Perth Amboy. I have worked in the hotel industry for the last 34 years. I moved to Park Terrace apartments in Highland Park in 1986 and fell in love with this community. It is a great place to live and particularly to raise kids. I enjoy couponing and spending time with the family.

FATHY MEKHAIL SAMUEL KRONMAN, APT. 3-D Hi, my name is Fathy Mekhail. I was born on October 9th 1937 in Alexandria, Egypt. I had 2 brothers and 1 sister but I am the only one left now. I graduated from Alexandria High School in Egypt and then went on to Law School. I had just completed 2 years when I joined the Army. It was the time of the Kuwait / Iraq war. I served for 3 1/2 years. I then worked for Sepak Company in the Payroll Department. I married my wife Demiana. We had 1 son, Mamdoh and 2 daughters Manal & Amany. Sadly, my wife died in 1984. Before she died, she made me promise that I will look after our three children well. I got a job as a manager with the Ministry of Power & Electricity. My son Mamdoh completed Medical School and came to the USA in 1990. He is now working as an ER doctor in Jersey City Hospital. The rest of us followed him to the US except for my younger daughter who opted to stay in Alexandria Egypt and is a practicing attorney. We settled down in Highland Park, NJ. And I moved into Samuel Kronman just last year. Everything is good in Highland Park! Things are readily available and very convenient. I enjoy reading, watching TV, using the computer and worshiping at St. Mary’s Orthodox Church in New Brunswick.
