    The magnificent Borobudur temple is the worlds biggest Buddhist monument, an

    ancient site widely considered to be one of the worlds seven wonders. Built in the

    9th century during the reign of the Syailendra dynasty, the temples design in Gupta

    architecture reflects Indias influence on the region, yet there are enough indigenous

    Stru"tural 'esin

    The high structures are t'pical of 2indu architecture, and the plan of the temple

    Bhurloka

    The base of the temples, as well as the outer s=uare is the underworld. *t was a large

    The central bod' of the temples and the middle s=uare of the comple), representsthe Lmiddle world< the place for those who have left their worldl' possessions. This is

    where people begin to see the light of truth. The middle world had four rows of %

    small individual shrines, where all shrines are identical.

    Svarloka

    The top of the temples and the innermost s=uare represents the realm of the gods,

    the holiest one, and is crowned. Three +3 temples that consist of 8 main temples/

    Brahma the Creator, &hiva the !estro'er, and 1ishnu the >eeper. &hiva temple is the

    biggest and the tallest amongst all with %".3m high, while Brahma and 1ishnu are

    88m high. *n addition to the three main temples, there are three ;ahana Temples,

    four >elir Temples, two pit Temples and four 7atok Temples.

    3orshipin 2n"estors

    *t is understood that when a king or prominent person died, the ashes of the

    deceased along with various obIects representing ph'sical and spiritual s'mbols of

    the cosmos, were placed in a stone casket.

    This casket was placed in a shaft in the base of a temple, above it was built a statue

    of a god, of whom the deceased was said to be an incarnation. This statue then

    becomes the obIect of worship for those honouring and worshipping the king.

    ncestor worship has been an *ndonesian cultural tradition since prehistoric times,

    and it has been adapted into the local adaptations of 2induism and Buddhism. &ome

    archaeologists suggest that the idol of &hiva in the central chamber of the

    The Ramayana epic is too long to be performed as a whole in one performance.Consequently, in the Sendratari Ramayana it is devided into four parts, each of which iscalled a lakon, viz. the bduction of Sinta, !anuman"s #ission to lengka, the $eath of%umbakarna, and the Reunion of Rama and Sinta.

    There is one particular characteristic of the &avanese '(ndonsian) Ramayana whichdistinguishes it from its (ndian counterpart* rama is more human than godlike.

    This Ramayana story was carved in the stone reliefs of the +th century rambanantemples located on the border between -ogyakarta and Surakarta. Ramayana series is
