Hello, Eastern Star Church Family and Friends!

Another year has come where we take time to hear from God as a church

family. Annually, we use the Lent season to spend 40 days fasting and

praying for God to reveal Himself to us and for us to be transformed. As

Christians, our goal is to bring glory to God by becoming more like Christ

in our actions, attitudes, and abilities to attract unbelievers to Him. This

dedicated period of fasting helps us to refocus our hearts and minds for

this ultimate goal.

As a church family, we will walk through this fasting devotional together.

This year, we will concentrate on youth, family, and our identity in Christ

– Born Identity. I pray this devotional will help you gain new strength for

the year ahead, beginning the year in tune to God’s voice. I hope that it

will reveal new truths about who God is and how you should respond to

Him. It is my hope that each day will provide insightful reflections and

solutions to challenges.

I am excited about how God will speak to you during this time. Do not

miss this opportunity to grow in your faith.

Grace and Peace.

INTRODUCTION

Biblical fasting is a spiritual discipline which was encouraged by Jesus,

Himself, while He was on earth (Matthew 9:15). Fasting brings us closer

to God. Our fasting should have an object in mind; we should have a

clear idea of the need and purpose. One of the most pressing reasons for

Christian fasting may be revival -- “Won’t you revive us again...” (Psalm

85:6). Fasting must also be done with an attitude of humility. It is not

necessary for others to know we are fasting; it is directed towards God.

“But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will

notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in

private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”

(Matthew 6:17-18 NLT)

FAST TYPE

From Ash Wednesday, February 14 – Palm Sunday, March 25, we will

primarily only eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains. We will only drink

water and 100% juices. We will refrain from eating meats, dairy, and

sweets. Sample menus are available on the church website to provide

ideas on how to structure your meals. One day every week, select a day

when you will participate in a liquid fast by only drinking liquids such as

water and 100% fruit juices.

For those of you who cannot fast because of medical reasons,

consider fasting certain types of food (sweets, soft drinks, etc.) or leisure

activities such as your favorite TV program and/or social media (i.e.,

Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.)

If you have any health conditions, please seek medical advice from your

physician before beginning any corporate food fast at Eastern Star Church.

FAST PURPOSE

The purpose of fasting is to grow closer to Christ by removing something

from your routine that will prompt you to lean on Christ. While Jesus was

fasting 40 days in the wilderness, he stated, “It is written: ‘Man does not

live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’”

(Matthew 4:4). Often, we can lose sight of this truth in our daily lives, so

fasting helps us to remember this perspective.

This year, the emphasis of our devotional time is twofold: to meditate on

what it means to be in the family of Christ and to meditate and pray for our

children, youth, and families. Use this devotional to help reflect on

various scriptures that reveal God’s love for us and His invitation to trust

and depend on Him as we learn more and more about Him.

Each devotion will provide the following components: Scripture taken from

the New Living Translation (NLT), Brief Comments, Further Reflections

that include an activity, and My Thoughts for you to write your reactions.

Although the fast lasts 40 days (February 14 – March 25), this devotional

will allow you to focus for 47 days ending on Easter Sunday, April 1.

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was

tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days and at the end of them he was hungry. - Luke 4:1-2 NLT

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent season. Lent is traditionally recognized as a 40 day fast where believers abstain from certain foods or other luxuries to commemorate the 40 days and nights that Christ fasted before beginning His earthly ministry. At Eastern Star Church, we participate in a fast during this season. The guidelines for the fast are taken from Daniel 1:8-16 where Daniel and his friends only ate vegetables and drank water while training to serve King Nebuchadnezzar.

FURTHER REFLECTION Read the entire account of Jesus’ fast and temptation,

Luke 4:1-13. Jesus was tempted in every way but He did not

sin. Reflect on the areas in your life where you are tempted. List

them below. Pray for God to give you strength not to give in to

those temptations.

MY THOUGHTS

FEBRUARY 15Even children are known by the way they act, whether their conduct is pure, and whether it is right. - Proverbs 20:11 NLT

Actions speak louder than words. Whether you observe a child holding the door open for a passerby or pushing a smaller child in the mud, his or her character is revealed without them saying a word. A child’s conduct speaks volumes to their upbringing and the values of their parents. As a son or daughter of God, people assume the values of your heavenly Father based on your character and conduct. Would your actions lead people to assume your God is pure and right? Or does God look foolish because you act foolish? “Don’t you embarrass me!” has been uttered by many parents before their arrival with their child to church or a special event. “Do not bring shame on my holy name,” God tells His people in Leviticus 22:32 while on the way to the Promised Land. The world is watching. Let’s make our Heavenly Father (and the whole family) look good with our conduct because we have the best Father on the whole block! (Psalm 113:4)

FURTHER REFLECTION Read and meditate on Romans 8:7-17, which details and expands how God’s children are to act pure and right. Have your child pour two clear glasses of water. Add two or three teaspoons of salt and a dash of hot sauce in one of them. Which would they rather drink? Explain that the water represents God’s love and character. The pure water is what people drink when we behave in ways that honor Jesus; they find Jesus to be refreshing. The yucky water is what people drink when we act foolishly and we do not honor Jesus. Make an agreement today to keep salty attitudes and hot tempers out of your life.

10

Do God’s blessings weigh us down? Many Christians long for heaven because their lives are full of pain, suffering, famine, disease, persecution, war, or tyranny. There is nothing in this fallen world that brings them pleasure or promises them a brighter tomorrow. Nevertheless, they love God and they think longingly of heaven and what God has in store for them there. However, we are lavished with God’s blessings. We have food on our table, a roof over our head, movies to watch, video games to play, sporting events to attend, clothes, reliable transportation, and one or more electronics to keep us from having to think at all. Are our sights set on the realities of heaven, or are our blessings getting in the way?

FURTHER REFLECTION Think about what it is that ties you to this world. Do you find yourself often thinking about heaven? If not, what do you think about? What outshines the “realities of heaven” in your heart? What do you need to let go of to embrace your “real” life with Christ in heaven? Take a moment to write a prayer to God, trading in your trinkets for His treasures, your religiosity for His reality, your empty life for His abundant love. Let go of the stuff from God, so that you may have God himself.

MY THOUGHTS

FEBRUARY 16Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your

sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and

your real life is hidden with Christ in God. - Colossians 3:1-3 NLT

FEBRUARY 17 And, He is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall. They stumble because they do not

obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them. But you are not like that, for you are a chosen

people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

- 1 Peter 2:8-9 NLT

Think about a time when you felt left out. Perhaps a friend didn’t invite you to a gathering, coworkers went to lunch without you, or not being chosen for a promotion at work. How did that make you feel? If you are like most people you probably felt sad or maybe even upset. In life we will go through situations that will leave us feeling left out and lonely, but it’s good to know that we are chosen by God. We may not be chosen by the popular crowd or by our managers and supervisors, but we should walk confidently knowing that God chose us. He chose us to be the light of the earth, He chose us to show His goodness to those who may not know Him, and He chose us to choose Him! Make it a point to share this scripture with someone who may not know they are chosen by God.

FURTHER REFLECTION List three words to help you remember you are chosen by

God. Then, mark this page for you to refer back to when you

face moments of feeling left out or not chosen.

FEBRUARY 18I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb.

Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations. - Jeremiah 1:5 NLT

Can you imagine walking into a room filled with hundreds of people you don’t know? Feelings of anxiety and nervousness would set in as you scan the room looking for a familiar face. Now imagine knowing someone who knew you before you were born. How would that make you feel? Like most people, you would ask “how is that possible?” This passage of scripture tells us it is possible! God knows every intricate detail about us and He made each of us unique. We may not know anyone in a room filled with hundreds of people, but rest assured, the One True God knows us. As you journey through the Lenten season remember God loves you, but most importantly He knows you because He made you.

FURTHER REFLECTION On a sheet of paper write down three ways you can get to

know God better. Then, expound on the following question:

What can I do today to strengthen my relationship with Him?

Keep referring to your answer during the fast.

FEBRUARY 19God places the lonely in families; he sets the prisoners free

and gives them joy. But he makes the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land. - Psalm 68:6 NLT

Our God knows exactly what we need when we need it. He is our provider and protector. He will provide protection to the helpless and will vindicate the innocent. Those who are rebellious can expect hardship. Lonesome times can visit us, but, that feeling does not mean we are friendless or without hope. The adversary would have us believe that we are isolated and cut off from relationships. Our God is whatever we need Him to be during our time of trial and need. Consider your way of life at this moment, are you feeling hopeless, lonely, loved, or inspired by the goodness of Christ?

FURTHER REFLECTION Read Psalm 68:1-6. Think of at least one or two things that

hold you or your children captive; examples fear, jealousy,

anger, doubt, etc. Write that thought on a card, and then pray

Gods help with a release, and throw it in the trash can. Let

your child see this demonstrated as an example. Repeat this

process as often as needed.

FEBRUARY 20We love each other because he loved us first. - 1 John 4:19 NLT

God loved us before we loved Him. When we were nailing Him to the cross, He still loved us. Do we love others just as they are, just as God loved us? If people have to look or act a certain way before we “love” them, is that love?

FURTHER REFLECTION Pray this prayer with your whole heart: “Loving God, I am sorry that my “love” has been so unlike yours. It is not unconditional or sacrificial. Too often, I love someone because that person has already shown love to me. My love is sometimes more about me and how it makes me feel than about a selfless desire for the best for someone else. Teach me to initiate love, to love the unloving, and the unlovable. Make me more like Jesus so that the world may know Him through the love they see in me.” Write down the name of someone God has placed on your heart to love for His sake. Write down at least three ways that you can express love to that person, e.g., call them, send a note, bake cookies, invite them to church, shovel their walkways, take them to dinner, or offer to babysit. Keep this list in your Bible where you will see it daily and can pray for that person. Make sure that by the end of the fast, you have sincerely let that person know that he/she is truly loved.

FEBRUARY 21 “Don’t be ridiculous!” Saul replied. “There’s no way you can fight this Philistine and possibly win! You’re only a boy, and he’s been a man of war since his youth.” But David persisted. “I have been

taking care of my father’s sheep and goats,” he said. “When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, I go after it with

a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God! The Lord who rescued

me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!” Saul finally consented. “All right, go ahead,” he said. “And

may the Lord be with you!” - 1 Samuel 17:33-37 NLT

David had uncommon courage. While most people cowered in fear because of the giant, this young man readied himself to go into battle because Goliath was God’s enemy and the enemy of God’s people. God wants us to be brave in the face of our spiritual enemies and to be ready for battle so that God might be glorified. Do you have a giant in your life? You have to face it before you can defeat it. What is its name: debt, illness, angry spouse, school bully, prejudice boss, major exam, inferiority complex, or illiteracy? No matter how big your giant is, it is not bigger than God!

FURTHER REFLECTION David did not use the same weapons as his enemy. Choose a “weapon” for facing your giant—prayer, fasting, love, scripture, honesty, a doctor’s appointment, seeing a therapist, making better choices, putting God first, or whatever is appropriate. Share with a trusted friend the name of your giant and ask that person to pray with you for victory. Before the fast ends, share with your trusted friend how the battle is going. Begin to praise God now for victory because David’s God is your God, too!

FEBRUARY 22My child, listen when your father corrects you. Don’t neglect

your mother’s instruction. What you learn from them will crown you with grace and be a chain of honor around your

neck. - Proverbs 1: 8-9 NLT

Growing up, we probably heard our parents say, “I’m not telling you what I heard, I’m telling you what I know.” This was usually followed by an important life lesson that was needed at the time. There are times we may have wanted to experience things our parents warned us against. When we decided to “test the waters,” we quickly discovered that our parents were right. They told us “what they knew” and not “what they heard,” we find ourselves running back to them for more wisdom, and we are surprisingly greeted with grace. As we uncover wisdom shared from God through scripture, the preached Word, songs/hymns, or others avenues, the enemy is quick to entice us to experience the very things God has warned us about. Sometimes it’s hard to resist that enticement, and we then reject the wisdom that was given. Embrace wisdom, run towards it, and remember the teachings/instructions shared with you. Allow wisdom to guide you with grace throughout the day.

FURTHER REFLECTION In a quiet place, take time to read the entire first chapter of

the book of Proverbs two-three times. Reflect on what you

read. Journal your thoughts about what you read and your

response to the following question: What prevents me from

choosing God’s wisdom? Affirm – I choose God’s wisdom.

FEBRUARY 23Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again – rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what

you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can

understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 4:4-7 NLT

How hard is it to have an attitude of praise or feel joy when life presents us with unfair circumstances? In this passage, Paul teaches us to have a positive attitude despite the way we feel or a bad situation we may encounter. Rejoice always! Choose joy, not only when things are good; we must choose joy always! Let our anxiety, cares, and worries turn into prayers. It’s easy to seek revenge or take matters into our own hands, however, if we want to experience the peace of God in the midst of life’s messy situations, we must adopt an attitude of praise. Remember all the wonderful things God has already done. Pray and submit your petitions to God, and in all things rejoice.

FURTHER REFLECTION Think about your life as it stands today. Then follow the instructions: On a sticky note or index card, write one thing you are grateful for. Find a jar and put that grateful note inside the jar. Continue to repeat; one grateful thing per card. You have now created a “gratitude jar.” Take a moment to praise God for all the things that are inside the jar. As you continue throughout the day, if something you encounter brings worry or anxiety, pull out the “gratitude jar” and read a few messages. Continue adding to your gratitude jar as you see fit.

MY THOUGHTS

FEBRUARY 24Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him. Children born to a young man are like arrows in a

warrior’s hands. How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them! He will not be put to shame when he confronts his

accusers at the city gates. - Psalm 127:3-5 NLT

Children are God’s best gift, the fruit of the womb. Imagine a fistful of arrows to shoot into life. How blessed are we as parents, when our quivers are full of children! Inheritance is a word that comes to mind when thinking of children being a gift from our Lord. It is a legacy that can give us a wonderful return on investment. Children bring joy but can also bring sadness when their conduct and choices do not align with the Word. Because children are a gift, we must nurture and guide them in the way of the Lord. Because children are a gift, we must nurture and guide them in the way of the Lord. God cares about His gifts; so should we. Let’s pour our knowledge of the Word, our support, and time into these wonderful gifts from God so they can become all that He intends them to be.

FURTHER REFLECTION Take time this week to do a RAK (random act of kindness)

attack for your child or someone else’s child. Consider what

legacy you want to leave to your children other than money.

FEBRUARY 25But watch out! Be careful never to forget what you yourself

have seen. Do not let these memories escape from your mind as long as you live! And be sure to pass them on to your

children and grandchildren. - Deuteronomy 4:9 NLT

Just as quick as we pass down a family heirloom and retell the story associated with it, we should do the same as we encounter the wonderful ways God moves in our lives. How easy is it for us to forget the things we have seen God do? This is why it’s important to share with others our first-hand experiences with God. Let the stories of what you have seen Him do become like family heirlooms being passed down for generations to come.

FURTHER REFLECTION Think about a time when God moved in such a way in your

life that you knew it could have only been God. Share this

experience with your children and what you learned about

God. If you don’t have children, share your story with a family

member, friend, co-worker, etc. Observe their reaction and use

this as a way to continue to share God with others.

MY THOUGHTS

FEBRUARY 26Then Esau looked at the women and children and asked, “Who are these people with you?” “These are the children

God has graciously given to me, your servant,” Jacob replied. - Genesis 33:5 NLT

“Thank you,” is a simple expression that carries a lot of meaning, when used sincerely. Too often “thank you” is used to express gratitude for the gift without much thought about the giver. In today’s text, Jacob acknowledges the graciousness of God when referring to the gift of his children. Whenever we thank God (and it should be often) or describe a blessing from God, we have an opportunity to focus on the character of God. Psalm 100, tells us to be thankful to God and bless His name. God is gracious. God is merciful. God is loving. Let us be mindful to always appreciate God the Giver.

FURTHER REFLECTION Read Psalm 136:1-9. Create two columns on a sheet of paper.

In the first column, label “Give Thanks” and list at least five

things you are thankful to God for. In the second column,

label “God Is” and list at least five attributes of God such as

“God is omnipotent.” Meditate on the character of God. Give

Him thanks and bless His name.

FEBRUARY 27Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so

that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, now that you have had a taste of the

Lord’s kindness. - 1 Peter 2:2-3 NLT

A craving is defined as a powerful desire for something. Some cravings, like a baby craving milk or a thirsty man craving water, are instinctive and needed for survival. Other cravings, like sugar, are developed over time because they appeal to our senses. It tastes good to us or feels good to us even if it is not good for us. We crave it, we consume it and when we crave more, we consume more. It becomes a vicious cycle of destructive behavior. Imagine the impact in our lives if we developed cravings for the things of God or if we constantly pursued the spiritual nourishment that God’s Word offers. We crave it, we consume it and when we crave more, we consume more. It becomes a victorious cycle of productive behavior!

FURTHER REFLECTION Read Psalm 63:1-8. Are you spending time seeking God? For

the next seven days, schedule at least ten minutes in your

day to pray and read God’s Word. Meditate on Psalm 63 and

ask God to help you develop a strong (or stronger) craving

for His Word.

MY THOUGHTS

FEBRUARY 28

It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has

brought a new baby into the world. - John 16:21 NLT

Most expectant mothers express excitement and anticipation about the pending birth of a baby. They know the pain of labor will eventually be replaced with the joy of a child. They don’t focus on the pain, but on the result of the pain. As God’s children, we do not have to focus on our pain. We can focus on the promises of God. Have you lost your job? Focus on God’s promise to supply your needs (Philippians 4:19). Are you lonely? Focus on God’s promise to never leave you. Psalm 30:5 tells us that weeping may last through the night but joy comes in the morning. You may be weeping now but find comfort in the fact that joy will come.

FURTHER REFLECTION Read 2 Corinthians 1:3-5. What pain are you experiencing in

your life right now? List your hurts and your frustrations. Cry

out to the God of all comfort and ask God to give you strength

to endure until your morning comes.

MARCH 1A youngster’s heart is filled with foolishness, but physical

discipline will drive it far away. - Proverbs 22:15 NLT

Young people can be prone to fads and foolishness. Scripture states, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” (Proverbs 4:23) Another way of saying it is ‘garbage in, garbage out,’ ‘good stuff in, good stuff out,’ or ‘right is right, even though few may be doing it,’ ‘wrong is wrong even though too many approve it.’ A young heart is ready to receive nutrition. The reality is it does not discriminate if it’s junk food or healthy food. A parents’ role is to approve of a spiritual beneficial diet. Imagine a daily wholesome dose of love, compassion, kindness, respect, concern, empathy, sensitivity, and affection. If these attributes are not digested but left on the plate, skip the dessert and deliver the plate of discipline. Someone stated, “Suffer the pain of discipline or suffer the pain of regret” so choose wisely. A child that does not listen to Godly reason is going to have a tough life.

FURTHER REFLECTION Is there a characteristic your child or teen is dealing with that

makes them hard headed or hard hearted? Offer two-three

suggestions how they can let it go. Is there a best practice you

would recommend with a scripture that will assist a stubborn

attitude of a child or teen? Make time this week to have a family

conversation on the importance and benefits of good behavior.

MY THOUGHTS

MARCH 2Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are

older, they will not leave it. - Proverbs 22:6 NLT

Whether good or bad, many things that we observe and learn during our childhood help to shape us in adulthood. It is important that children be exposed to God at an early age so that they will get to know Him and the sound of His voice. Take time to reflect on the direction that God has given you through His Word and prayer. Be intentional about modeling Godly behavior for our youth through fervent prayer, reading your Bible, and serving in ministry.

FURTHER REFLECTION Make a list of characteristics and attributes you would like

our youth to model when they are adults such as being

generous, compassionate, honest, joyful, intelligent, etc. With

each of the characteristics and attributes you have written

down, write an example of how you can model this behavior

to youth such as emphasizing the importance of giving

by making sure they see you give time (attending Sunday

School or Bible Study), talent (serving in a ministry), and

treasure (consistently giving of tithes and offering). Pray and

ask God for direction in your own life and to help you direct

your children so that their lives may glorify Him.

MARCH 3Jesus called a small child over to him and put the child

among them. Then he said, “I assure you, unless you turn from your sins and become as little children, you will never

get into the Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the

Kingdom of Heaven. And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me. But if anyone

causes one of these little ones who trusts in me to lose faith, it would be better for that person to be thrown into the sea

with a large millstone tied around the neck. - Matthew 18:2-6 NLT

Jesus has a heart for children. A young child believes by faith that whatever they’re told is true. “We’re going to the amusement park,” “the moon is made of green cheese,” “you are intelligent and I love you,” a child believes you simply because you said it. How much more should we believe and trust the faithful promises of a holy God? Proverbs 3:5 encourages us to “trust the LORD with all your heart.” When the children of God drop sin like a forgotten toy and run to the Father, we’re showing Him we trust the path He’s directing for us, even if we don’t fully understand it. Be mature in your faith by having a childlike trust in the One who knows where you’re going and how to get you there.

FURTHER REFLECTION Though Jesus has harsh words for those who would destroy a child’s faith, the opposite is just as powerful. How pleasing is it in God’s sight to build up a child’s faith (v.5)! Jesus blessed, prayed for, and utilized children in His ministry. Read Matthew 19:13-15 and follow the Lord’s example by placing your hands on each of your children and praying for them aloud. If they are old enough to speak, reverse it and have them place their hand on you and pray for you aloud. Watch God work as He answers their prayers and builds their faith at the same time.

MY THOUGHTS

MARCH 4And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are

away on a journey, when you are lying down and when you are getting up again. - Deuteronomy 6:5-7 NLT

Love God with all your heart, Jesus called this the first and greatest commandment when questioned in Mark 12:29-30. But why? Why love God with all your heart? The more room God and His Word takes in our hearts, souls, minds, and mouths, the less room there is for distraction. If God has your whole heart, then sin, selfishness, and Satan can have none. Invite your children to this truth by setting a godly environment that will help them grow in their own faith. Memorize scripture with them, pray beyond just bedtime and dinner, and commit as a family to loving the Lord with your all, and experience the joy of being loved in return by the God who’s “ALL” has no limits! In Deuteronomy 6:20-25, Moses supposes your children might ask, “Why do we have to do all this? What’s the point of all these rules?” The simplified answer he gives is, “God’s been too good to us.” Teach your kids they are not abstaining from soda and hot dogs during the 40 days because “Pastor said so,” but because God blesses our obedience and He’s been too good to us for us not to want to grow closer to Him.

FURTHER REFLECTION Ask each child to share three ways God has been good to the family since last year’s fast. Share your own story about the times God has blessed your obedience. Strengthen your child’s heart, soul, and mind with your testimony until God gives them a personal testimony of their own.

MARCH 5Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you

live, in your love, your faith, and your purity. - 1 Timothy 4:12 NLT

Being a godly example for others to follow is not a function of age. There are many older believers who have not grown in grace or wisdom. Being a godly example comes from living a godly life, it requires discipline and a sincere desire to live according to God’s design. During this time of fasting and consecration to the Lord, don’t allow anyone to discourage you because of your natural age. Be encouraged by the Lord’s affirmation of your desire to please Him in this way. Timothy was a young man (relative to his mentor Paul) but Paul saw in Timothy a “gift” which he consistently encouraged him to use. People can discourage you when you are young in the faith, especially when they themselves are immature. By allowing the Holy Spirit to lead you, you will be able to set an example that others can follow and give glory to God in the process.

FURTHER REFLECTION Read the entire account of Paul’s instructions to Timothy in

1 Timothy 4:1-16. Identify any negative habits or traits which

might be a hindrance to someone who looks up to you.

What steps can you take to overcome those habits or traits?

MY THOUGHTS

MARCH 6 “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full

life in the land the Lord your God is giving you. - Exodus 20:12 NLT

This scripture in Exodus is one of the Ten Commandments God gave Moses as a guideline for the Israelites to meet the needs of individuals in a responsible way. God provided these laws while they were on the journey to their final destination, the Promised Land. Interestingly enough, He did not wait until they got there to give them instruction. God provided instructions along the way. Due to their lack of obedience, their journey was delayed and many generations never entered the Promised Land. Don’t miss the instructions along the way, delaying your promises from God. Along your journey, strive to live in peace with all generations with honor and respect.

FURTHER REFLECTION This is the only commandment with a promise attached

to it. As you continue your journey of fasting and praying,

listen for God’s instructions. Pray for multi-generational

peace in our nation. Reflect on how you can be used by God

to make peace with other generations.

MARCH 7For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a

hope. - Jeremiah 29:11 NLT

The above scripture comes from a letter Jeremiah wrote to the Israelites in Babylonian exile. In this letter, he says that they must spend seventy years in exile, but in verse 10 God says, “Then I will come and do for you all the good things I have promised.” Have you ever been in a situation where you felt like you would never get out of it? The Israelites probably felt that way, but this particular time in history not only shows God’s judgment of sin, but His faithfulness and the thoughts He has toward His people. Did you know that God thinks about you? The creator of the universe has you in mind! In times of chastisement, testing, and temptations, God still has a plan for your life. In those times when you feel stuck, seek God’s will for your life and surrender your own plans. God’s plan for your life is better than any plan you can make for yourself.

FURTHER REFLECTION Write down something that you currently have planned for

your life. Pray and seek God’s will for the plans and trust

when He reveals His desire for you.

MY THOUGHTS

MARCH 8Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to

us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.

- James 1:17 NLT

There are a lot of things in life that are easier said than done; and often it’s not until the completion of a task when you reap the reward. For example, working out is not always a joyful experience when you’re doing it, but the reward comes in time with consistency. To see and feel the results, you must be faithful in going to the gym. Same goes for the tests and trials God sends our way. In James 1:12 (GNB), Paul says, “Happy are those who remain faithful under trials, because when they succeed in passing such a test, they will receive as their reward the life which God has promised to those who love him.” It is difficult to be happy when you are facing trials, but Paul says happiness comes when you remain faithful during the trial. Happiness and faithfulness go hand in hand. It’s when we remain faithful during these times, that we will receive the “good and perfect gift” that is promised in James 1:17.

FURTHER REFLECTION Think about a recent trial you have faced. Write down how

you believe God was testing your faith, integrity, behavior,

or your consistency. Write down ways to stay faithful during

present and future trials.

MARCH 9May the Lord cut off their flattering lips and silence their

boastful tongues. They say, “We will lie to our hearts’ content. Our lips are our own-who can stop us?” The Lord replies, “I

have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they

have longed for me to do. - Psalm 12:3-5 NLT

Often times we are tempted to believe that our lies are indeed true, harmless, or even useful. However, God’s word is clear in the fact that He does not simply ignore deceit, manipulation, or boasting. Proper speech involves saying the right things at the right time, as well as controlling one’s desire to say what they should not say. Examples of improper speech include, gossiping, putting others down, bragging, complaining, manipulating, and lying. Our actions may originate from an attitude expressed during our speech, it is important that we as Christians use appropriate speech when interacting with others.

FURTHER REFLECTION Read and reflect on James 3:1-12, to further understand how powerful our speech/tongue truly is. In your personal life, where are you tempted the most to engage in improper speech? (example: Facebook, Twitter, “catching up” with friend on the phone, or “water cooler gossip” at your office)? What are some things that you can do to avoid engaging in improper speech? Pray and ask God to help you T.H.I.N.K. prior to initiating conversation or responding to others. T – is it true? H- is it helpful? I- is it inspiring? N- is it necessary? K- is it kind?

MY THOUGHTS

MARCH 10“So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go

ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” - Deuteronomy 31:6 NLT

We face many challenges in our lives, particularly when we make the decision to obediently follow God. Sometimes those challenges will cause us to fear, wondering if we have made the right decision. It is okay to feel fear; that’s natural. However, we should not give in to the fear of the things that come against us. God has promised never to leave us nor forsake us. He wants us to be courageous, which means that we (by faith) must act in spite of our fear. As we seek His face during this time of fasting, remind yourself of His promise to always be with you. When discouragement threatens to steal your joy, surrender to His Word and remind yourself of His promise to always be with you. Remembering God’s faithfulness is a good way to reinforce your own.

FURTHER REFLECTION Circumstances will test our faith and we will have times of

fear, but hearing the Lord’s encouragement will help us be

courageous. Read Deuteronomy 31:1–8. Acknowledge your

fears by writing them down. Find a scripture for each of those

fears which will help you replace your fear with faith. Write

each one on a separate index card. As you submit to God

during this time of fasting, refer to these scriptures to remind

yourself to “be strong and courageous.”

MARCH 11Sensible children bring joy to their father; foolish children

despise their mother. - Proverbs 15:20 NLT

Having or showing good judgment is a process that should start at home. Children develop wise habits when parents/guardians demonstrate morals and values that align with the Word of God. Sensible children recognize a need for their parents, respect them, and bring them joy. On the other hand, foolish children are not teachable which leads to destructive behavior and it breaks their parents’ hearts. How much more do we break the heart of our heavenly Father when we are rebellious, reject discipline, and practice unwise habits? Be encouraged, for the Holy Spirit is with you each day to help you practice wise behaviors.

FURTHER REFLECTION You are on the right track by participating in this fast! Pray

for God to help you be honest with yourself. Write down at

least one foolish behavior that is a struggle for you. Confess

and commit to change. Read and meditate on 1 John 1:9.

List two-three wise behaviors you will start practicing daily

(read Bible, pray, serve others, tithe, etc.).

MY THOUGHTS

MARCH 12Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful

or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins

out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

- 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT

This passage teaches us what love is and what love is not. God is challenging us to look at our relationships to assess how well we measure up to His love standard. Honestly ask yourself, am I patient and kind? Do I rejoice with truth or delight in evil? How often are my thoughts and behaviors envious, boastful, prideful, rude, or self-seeking? Am I guilty of keeping a record of wrongs or being easily angered? God’s standard of love is a high calling. Love always protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres. Love never fails. It is only through the power of the Holy Spirit that we can demonstrate this type of love in our daily lives. Remember, all things are possible through Christ who gives us strength. Be encouraged with these words, “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13)

FURTHER REFLECTION As you reflect today, remember love covers a multitude of

sins: Who do you need to forgive? Whose slate do you need

to wipe clean? Have you wiped your slate clean? Write down

one-two ways you can extend God’s standard for love this

week (e.g., to a parent, spouse, co-worker, etc.). Be specific.

MARCH 13How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word.

- Psalm 119:9 NLT

The Psalmist’s prayer also serves as advice to a young person. While the young are the focus of the text we can all benefit from this instruction. To stay pure involves a commitment of obedience to the Word of God. Purity involves cleanliness. Commitment involves a willingness to stay with something, no matter what comes up. In Romans 6:11-13, the Apostle Paul reminds us that we should not allow any part of our body to be used for sin. We can stay pure/clean by internalizing (reading and meditating) on God’s Word with a commitment to live by what it says. Commit to spending time in God’s Word daily. Monitor your intake. Unite with a Sunday School class, attend Bible Study and fellowship with other Christians. These steps will help your growth at being pure and obedient

FURTHER REFLECTION Commit to getting away from the distractions of daily life (cell

phone, television, movies, etc.) while spending time in prayer

and reading the Word of God. Allow Him to speak to you. Write

down your thoughts on what God is showing you and what

actions you will take to make a commitment to purity.

MY THOUGHTS

MARCH 14I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow

with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. - Romans 15:13 NLT

The Apostle offers this benediction (blessing) to the Romans and all who would read or hear his letter read, that includes us. Joy is a state of happiness that results from being in a right relationship with God. Peace is a state of well-being that comes from, and is dependent on a right relationship with God. The blessing is that they would not only experience joy and peace, but overflow in it! This type of blessing would only come to those whose confidence is in the true source of hope; God Himself. He is the fountain from which all hope flows. During this time of prayer and fasting, we must make sure our hope and confidence is in the One who can do anything but fail! Let’s make sure our requests are in line with His will. When we do this, we can be joyful, peaceful, and confident as we wait for the answers to our prayers.

FURTHER REFLECTION Read Philippians 4:6-13. This scripture assures you that God

and His strength are available to you and illuminates the path

to peace during troubled times. Write these verses over and

over until you can repeat them flawlessly. You too can have

confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

MARCH 15Children, always obey your parents, for this pleases the Lord.

- Colossians 3:20 NLT

Without our parents, we would not be here today. Before God put us on this earth, he made our parents first. Parents are charged to train up their children in the way they should go, and understand they are held accountable to God for their stewardship of the children He has given to them. The word “obey” or “obedience” comes to mind when referring to this passage. To obey means to behave or act in accordance with what you have been asked or ordered to do by someone in authority. God is commanding us to obey our parents, especially if they are giving us Godly wisdom. They have been ordered by God to lovingly act on His behalf to guide us in His ways. You honor your parents by speaking respectfully to them or of them, and by living a life that honors our heavenly Father. For those who do not have earthly parents, God will always be your heavenly Father. We must also obey Him and strive to honor Him in everything we do while we are here on earth. Colossians 3:18-4:1 discuss basic principles for two sets of household relationships: (1) husbands and wives, and (2) parents and children. Each relationship consists of a mutual responsibility to: submit, obey, and please God.

FURTHER REFLECTION Read Colossians 3:18–4:1 with your children and reflect on how the family can tie this biblical scripture into your daily walk. Have your children write down what it means to obey their parents, and ways that they can honor their parents. If you do not have children, take part in an act of kindness to show appreciation to someone in your life who has been parent-like (aunt, uncle, mentor) and given you Godly wisdom.

MY THOUGHTS

MARCH 16So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your

forehead as reminders. - Deuteronomy 11:18 NLT

In this scripture, Moses is encouraging the people of God to devote themselves to obedience and the commands God had given him. He has passed on to them the very Words of God, and he wants them to experience the blessings that come with this obedience. He wants them to take God’s Word’s so seriously, that they tie His words to their hands and to their foreheads. This may have been figurative speech; nonetheless, some pious Jews practiced the wearing of phylacteries, small boxes containing scripture, strapped to their hands and/or their foreheads. This served as a reminder that whatever the hands did, it should reflect their close relationship with God. They were to bind them to their foreheads to represent what was on their minds should be of God. How serious are you with regards to the Word of God? Does it have a place in your everyday life? Would you like to experience the blessings of God in your life? Meditate on the Word of God, prayerfully reading and thinking about what it says. Remember, the more time we spend in obedience to God, the less time we have for sin.

FURTHER REFLECTION Examine your thoughts. On what does your mind dwell? To

what do you expose yourself? Are these of God? How do they

reflect your relationship with God? Below write specific ways

you can improve your obedience to God.

MARCH 17And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands

that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.

Write them on the door posts of your house and on your gates. - Deuteronomy 6:6-9 NLT

It has never been God’s plan for us to have a casual religious relationship with Him. He has always wanted fellowship, intimacy, and love from His people. In Deuteronomy 6, we see that God told Moses to teach Israel how to live in the Promise Land that He was going to give them. God told Moses to tell them that He, the Lord, is One and they are to love Him with all of their heart, with all their soul, and with all their strength. He wanted their love. To keep this love alive, they needed to have a continual reminder of Him: His Word. He wanted them to never forget that He was their God and they were His people. They were to teach their children so that they would know Him and love Him too. He wants our love, our hearts, and our minds. Our lives are to be a conversation about Him. Our ways, attitudes, emotional responses, finances, and our behavior should all speak of Him and our relationship with Him. That’s what He wanted then, and that’s what He wants now. How wonderful it is, that He loves us so much, and He wants us to love Him back.

FURTHER REFLECTION Ask yourself these questions and set aside time each day, to spend time with Him as He reveals the true answers to us. What do you talk about each day? What is the focus of your texting (at work, at home and on your cell phone)? How often do you spend intentional time with Him? Purposely setting aside dedicated time in prayer, study, and meditation to listen to Him speak in His Word. What does your attitude (at work, at home, in relationships, in your interactions with others) say about Him? What do you talk about with others and with your children?

MY THOUGHTS

MARCH 18Then He put a little child among them. Taking the child in His arms, He said to them, “Anyone who welcomes a little

child like this on my behalf, welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who

sent me.” - Mark 9:3-37 NLT

In this scripture, Jesus picked up a little child and told the disciples that greatness is the humble act of love that reaches out to those who are in need, those who are the lowly, those who are not considered significant in society, or those who are looked at as outcast in the culture of the day. Jesus told them, “Welcome these on My behalf and by doing so, you will welcome Me.” Still today He wants us to learn the lesson that greatness is being willing to be last: to be great is to be humble, to be great is to be willing to serve unseen. It is not the praise and accolades of man, nor the title or the position that makes men great. Greatness is being willing to serve those who need to be lifted up. In the scriptures proceeding verse 36, we find the disciples had been arguing about who was the greatest among them. How amazing that the disciples walked and talked with Jesus every day, they saw His miracle, and they had the blessing of experiencing His presence. The disciples argued, amongst themselves, about who among them was the greatest. It’s interesting to see how we measure ourselves against one another other.

FURTHER REFLECTION Spend time in prayer, reflecting on your concept of humility.

you to serve unseen.

MARCH 19Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years. He did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight and followed the example of

his ancestor David. He did not turn away from doing what was right. During the eighth year of his reign, while he was

still young, Josiah began to seek the God of his ancestor David. Then in the twelfth year he began to purify Judah

and Jerusalem, destroying all the pagan shrines, the Asherah poles, and the carved idols and cast images.

- 2 Chronicles 34: 1-3 NLT

Our children must be given examples and role models that help nurture positive character traits at an early age, this is important due to the increasingly social media-focused world. They need our action. It is important for a child’s loved ones to be aware of the critical role they play in nurturing the character traits and skills needed for discipleship and for success. It is never too early to begin this journey.

FURTHER REFLECTION Reread 2 Chronicles 34:1-3. After seeking God, King Josiah

made changes. Reflect on a time when you needed to make

changes. Below, write two areas of your life you want to

change. Beside each change, list an action plan to achieve it.

MY THOUGHTS

MARCH 20My child, listen when your father corrects you. Don’t neglect

your mother’s instruction. - Proverbs 1:8 NLT

Wisdom has been defined as the soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of experience, knowledge, and good judgment. This scripture reminds us to seek wisdom. Solomon is considered one of the wisest men recorded in the Bible. When the Father corrects our behavior, we must listen. Today’s world is very loud. We are constantly enticed to go in different directions and explore new things. We are given instructions and alternatives on how to live our lives. The Bible consists of:B - Basic I - Instructions B - Before L - Leaving E - Earth Whenever in doubt refer to His Word.

FURTHER REFLECTION Everyone is tempted to live life on their own terms, but the

Father desires for us to trust Him. What areas of your life do you

find yourself struggling with: financial decisions, relationships,

MARCH 21

The godly walk with integrity; blessed are their children who follow them. - Proverb 20:7 NLT

Our actions speak louder than our words. This is especially true in the home. Children learn values, morals, and priorities by observing how their parents act and react every day. If parents exhibit a deep reverence for and dependence on God, the children will embody these attitudes. Let children see your reverence for God. Teach them to live right by giving worship an important place in your family life and by also reading the Bible together. Wisdom comes in two ways: it is a God-given gift and the result of an energetic search. Wisdom’s starting point is God and His revealed Word: the source of “knowledge and understanding.” When we are one with the Spirit, it will show up in our walk.

FURTHER REFLECTION Does the way you walk and talk reflect your time spent with God?

Why or why not? What steps will you take to walk closer to God?

MY THOUGHTS

MARCH 22All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to

what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT

“The B-I-B-L-E, yes that’s the book for me,” is a lyric from a song that highlights the importance of the Word of God. The Bible is God’s Words. The Bible is a love letter from God that is specifically tailored for all of us. God uses the Bible to show us how we should live our lives. Therefore, we should approach scriptures with great anticipation and expectation. When we prayerfully read the Bible, the Holy Spirit will reveal God’s truth to us, and we will have a deeper understanding of God. Then, we have the responsibility to adjust our lives to God’s truth by obeying His words.

FURTHER REFLECTION Pray and ask God to identify one or more scriptures that He

wants you to understand, learn, or practice. Then, respond

to the following questions: What was the most meaningful

scripture you read today? Reword the scripture into a

prayer of response to God. What does God want you to do in

response to today’s study?

MARCH 23The leading priests and the teachers of religious law saw these wonderful miracles and heard even the children in the Temple

shouting, “Praise God for the Son of David.” But the leaders were indignant. They asked Jesus, “Do you hear what these children are saying?” “Yes,” Jesus replied. “Haven’t you ever read the Scriptures? For they say, ‘You have taught children

and infants to give you praise.’” - Matthew 21:15-16 NLT

God blesses us every day. Some of those blessings we are aware of, others, we are not; no matter what, our response to God for his bountiful blessings should be praise. The Bible says in Psalm 150:6, “Let everything that has breath, praise the Lord.” Praise is an act expressing our admiration for God and thanking Him. While it’s appropriate and essential for us to praise God, that doesn’t mean everyone will appreciate how we praise Him. We should not be distracted by their opposition, however, we must remain focused on what our Heavenly Father is doing in our lives.

FURTHER REFLECTION Prayerfully read Psalm 150:1-6. Take some time to reflect on

how God has blessed you and protected you at various stages

in your life. Then, take some time to praise God.

MY THOUGHTS

MARCH 24But you must remain faithful to the things you have been

taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. You have been taught the holy

Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in

Christ Jesus. - 2 Timothy 3:14-15 NLT

In a time when our society is bombarded with “alternative facts” that are disseminated through social media and other outlets, it is refreshing to know that God’s Word is still and will always be true. God lovingly uses people, who have the gift of teaching, to share the truth of His Word with us. His ultimate goal is for us to respond to the teaching favorably by receiving Jesus into our heart by faith. We show our appreciation to God by remaining committed to what we have been taught.

FURTHER REFLECTION Read Acts 8:26-38 to see how God used Philip to explain

a scripture to a person who was yearning to know what

it meant. Philip’s teaching resulted in the person being

baptized and committing his life to Jesus. Identify and list

the names of the Christian teachers and ministers who

have been a blessing in your life by sharing and teaching

God’s Word to you. Pray and thank God for using them to

help build your faith.

MARCH 25 (PALM SUNDAY)

I will teach your children and they will enjoy great peace. - Isaiah 54:13 NLT

God promises to teach our children and He utilizes others such as parents, pastors, teachers, family, youth leaders, etc. to fulfill His promise and to achieve the promise of spiritual instruction for our children. Since children are easily influenced by what they see, it is up to adults to model Christian living. If our children witness adults modeling practices such as reading the Bible, fasting and praying, forgiveness and humility, it is likely they will model the same practices. We need to model that actions speak louder than words for the youth that look up to us.

FURTHER REFLECTION Reread Isaiah 54:13. According to God’s promise, the result

of teaching is great peace for our children. Even though we

are all God’s children, there are times we do not feel peace.

Reflect on areas in your life where you do not feel at peace.

What practices do you need to incorporate into your life? List

them below. Pray for God to guide your actions daily.

MY THOUGHTS

MARCH 26Beware that you don’t look down on any of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels are always in the

presence of my Heavenly Father. - Matthew 18:10 NLT

Jesus Christ displayed compassion to those He came to save, especially children. Jesus did not turn His attention away from children, nor did He look down on them. Children are significant to God and are a part of God’s plan. As Christians, we must be careful not to offend or discount the young believers. Just like us, the children are in God’s protective care with angels appointed to watch over them.

FURTHER REFLECTION Reread Matthew 18:10. Reflect on a time that you may have

offended a young person. Share how this experience made

you feel. Reflect on a time that a young person may have

offended you. Share how the experience made you feel.

Pray to God for strength to encourage others along with

encouraging yourself.

MARCH 27To discipline a child produces wisdom, but a mother is

disgraced by an undisciplined child. - Proverbs 29:15 NLT

Have you ever been out in public and witnessed an unruly child misbehaving and the parent is unable to control the situation? In situations like this, who is embarrassed, the child or the parent? The parent! The parent is now faced with another problem, “How to handle the situation?” One option is punishment, however, punishment will not erase the disgrace the parent has already suffered. What if the parent had taken a more proactive approach, how would the situation change? If the parent had trained/disciplined the child on how to behave in public, then the parent would have reared a good child with no “sorrow” rather than a foolish child full of mischief. Parents have a responsibility to discipline their children. They can take the wise approach and teach them early, or they can take the foolish approach and punish them later.

FURTHER REFLECTION Read Proverbs 22:6. There are biblical guidelines for parents

of young children to follow, by which they can raise their chil-

dren in a godly manner. List some advantages of using these

biblical guidelines. Pray for the children of our city, state,

country, and world.

MY THOUGHTS

MARCH 28And all who have united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in

Christ Jesus. - Galatians 3:27-28 NLT

When an individual joins the United States Army they take an oath to serve their country and to obey their leaders. At that point, they take off their civilian clothes and put on their Army uniform. Their wardrobe, habits, conduct, and even their diet changes. These changes are essential for growth and development into an effective soldier. It is a life-changing experience. When you unite with Christ and receive His Spirit it is also a life-changing experience. Regardless of who you were before Christ, you now have a new identity. Since you accepted Christ and have received the power of His Spirit, what changes will you allow the Holy Spirit to make in your life? For example, are His ways your ways? Are His thoughts your thoughts? During this period of fasting and praying, let’s make sure that we also give great attention to modifying our living habits as well.

FURTHER REFLECTION As you think on these things, pray for spiritual discernment

and power, so the changes that others see in you reflect

who you are in Christ. Read Galatians 5:13-6:19, Paul lists

definite steps of practical living for Christians. Make a list

of these steps. Practice them during the fast so others will

see not only the results of changes in your eating habits,

but also changes in your “living habits.”

MARCH 29See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his

children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children

because they don’t know him. Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be

like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. - 1 John 3:1-2 NLT

As Christians, we must understand that in a world that does not know God we are very privileged to be called “children of God.” However, with great privilege comes great responsibility. As “children of God,” we have the responsibility to demonstrate to the world an image of who God is which involves going through a process of maturity that goes beyond the giving of a tithe or church attendance. It is a process of life-changing growth and maturity that helps us take on the very nature and character of Christ. It is a process of life-changing growth and maturity that helps us take on the very nature and character of Christ. Paul defines this process in Romans chapters 6-8 as “sanctification.” We can never be perfect like Christ, but if we continue to strive to be like Him, then the world will be able to see God in us.

FURTHER REFLECTION Meditate on 1 John 3:1-2. Then write down two ways you

could show someone the God that resides in you.

MY THOUGHTS

How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony. - Psalm 133:1 NLT

There is value in harmony, unity, and togetherness. When we come to this realization in the church, the body of Christ, is truly a reason to give praises to our Heavenly Father. When the anointing flows from the head, to the beard, to the skirt of God’s anointed, it extends far beyond to the footsteps of everyone who dares to walk in the path and footsteps of God’s anointed. God has blessed Eastern Star Church with an anointed man of God. We would be wise to allow that anointing to flow into our lives in obedience with the Word of God. Harmony promotes growth and benefits the entire body.

FURTHER REFLECTION Pray for the Pastor and his family. Pray that God will help

us to be the persons He uses to pray for those He has

gifted with such a strong and powerful anointing. Pray that

you pass on a spirit of unity so the world will know we are

truly Christ’s disciples by our love for one another.

MARCH 31I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin

against you. - Psalms 119:11 NLT

The Psalmist has a very high regard for the Word of God and he knows the importance of having God’s Word secretly embedded in our hearts. Hiding God’s Word in our hearts is a good defense against being surprised or suddenly confronted with any type of sin or temptation that might try to enslave or entrap us as children of God. All sin is against God. When we have God’s Word deeply hidden in our hearts, it illuminates our path and prevents us from falling into temptations. God gives us free will and choices over every decision we make but the Word of God in our hearts allows the Holy Spirit to convict us of anything that is contrary to God’s Word.

FURTHER REFLECTION If your issue is fear, jealousy, anger, pride, self-righteousness,

doubt, lying, stealing, insecurity, drug or alcohol addictions,

etc., ask God to direct you to a concordance showing you

which scriptures will help you and your loved ones the most.

Write out scriptures from different translations on sticky

notes, then memorize them. As you begin to internalize

these scriptures place these sticky notes on your mirror or

refrigerator as a reminder of the power of God’s Word.

At the end of the month transfer them into a journal.

APRIL 1 (EASTER)

When Jesus was twelve years old, they attended the festival as usual. After the celebration was over, they started home

to Nazareth, but Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents didn’t miss him at first, because they assumed he was among the other travelers. But when he didn’t show

up that evening, they started looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they couldn’t find him, they went back to Jerusalem to search for him there. Three days later they finally discovered him in the Temple, sitting among the

religious teachers, listening to them and asking questions. All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. His parents didn’t know what to think. “Son,”

his mother said to him, “why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been frantic, searching for you everywhere.”

“But why did you need to search?” he asked. “Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?” But they didn’t

understand what he meant. - Luke 2:42-50 NLT

As a parent or caring adult, we expose children and teens under our care to a variety of activities such as sports, music, art, movies, and church. As they mature, we give them increasing amounts of independence to be around friends and others whom we know. However, we are often uneasy and frantic when our children are not where we expect for them to be. Similarly, God may become restless when we are not where He desires for us to be. One place God desires us to be is active and engaged in church. In this scripture, God reminds Jesus’ parents and us that you can trust the church to teach your children.

FURTHER REFLECTION Read Colossians 1:9-12. Pray for three people (children and

adults) whom God has put on your heart to pray for today.

Pray that they become more active and engaged in ministry.
