Boricua Green SymposiumFor Exercise Frozen Beaver, in 2005, Canadian troops helicoptered to Hans Island—a kidney-shaped, half-square-mile rock near Greenland claimed by both Denmark and Canada—and planted a supposedly windproof steel flag and flagpole that the wind toppled over almost immediately. They also confiscated a Danish flag, which the government then delivered to Denmark's ambassador in Ottawa.
Despite assurances by a spokesman that Danish pastries would still be served in the cafeteria of Canada's foreign affairs ministry, Denmark nearly sent a warship to Hans in retaliation.

Global Warming Effects
• Food shortages and malnutrition will threaten 600 million people by 2080.• Heat waves like the one experienced in 2003 in Europe, when 35,000 people died and agricultural losses reached $115 billion, will be common place by the middle of this century.
• Some disaster scenarios project economic losses as high as $1 trillion in a single year for 2040.
• Nine of the ten warmest years on record since 1850 were between 1995 and 2006.
