Higher National QualificationsHigher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) are SQA qualifications that provide both the practical skills you need to do a job and the theoretical knowledge your employer will expect you to have. They also help develop advanced study skills and the generic core skills necessary to progress to University. Some HNCs allow direct entry into the second year of a degree qualification and some HNDs allow direct entry into the third year.

All the courses are made up of Higher National Unit credits (one credit represents roughly 40 hours of timetabled learning).• HNCsaremadeupof12creditsandusuallytakeoneyeartocomplete• HNDsaremadeupof30credits(normally15creditsperyear)andusually

take two years to complete

Candidates must achieve all of the required units in order to be certificated for the Group Award; however, the units are certificated in their own right, therefore, if you do not achieve the Group Award you will still be certificated for the units.

Possessing an HNC or HND can also give you entry to a number of professional bodies, so whether you want to go straight into a job, or continue your studies, getting a Higher National qualification is a good place to start. HNC qualifications are at SCQF Level 7 & HND qualifications are at SCQF Level 8.

Full details of the extensive articulation routes which Borders College has in place with various partner universities are available from the Student Advice CentreT:01896662556.

UCAS

Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) is the organisation through which you apply for almost all undergraduate courses at UK universities. The application allows you to apply for up to five university courses, using only one application.

In all cases, to apply for a university place, whether Borders College has an agreement or not, you are required to apply through UCAS by the deadline set by them. It is better to apply as early as possible.

Support and advice when filling out your UCAS application will be available for Borders College students. You can discuss your future plans with your course tutor or pop into the Student Advice Centre to arrange an appointment with a Student Support Advisor.

INCLUSION

Borders College strives continually to be an ‘inclusive college’. This means we will make every effort to enable all learners, whatever their background, to benefit from our education. Inclusion means removing the barriers, which can prevent people fulfilling their potential. This prospectus describes many of the particular forms of help, such as the Student Support Services available within Borders College. We aim to ensure that the College is an environment that is free from discrimination, harassment and victimisation and we oppose all unlawful or unfair forms of discrimination, harassment and victimisation on the grounds of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation or background and will look to foster good relationships between all groups.

The College Equality, Diversion and Inclusion Policy is available on our website, oryoucanhaveacopysenttoyoubytelephoningtheCollegeon08700505152.
